Thermoelectric properties of pressure-sintered Si(0.8)Ge(0.2) thermoelectric alloys

The thermoelectric properties of 28 sintered Si(0.8)Ge(0.2) alloys, heavily doped with either B or P and prepared from powders with median particle sizes ranging from about 1 to over 100 microns, have been determined from 300 to 1300 K. The thermal conductivity decreases with decreasing particle size; however, the figure of merit is not significantly increased due to a compensating reduction in the electrical conductivity. The thermoelectric figure of merit is in good agreement with results of Dismukes et al. (1964) on similarly doped alloys prepared by zone-leveling techniques. The electrical and thermal conductivity are found to be sensitive to preparation procedure while the Seebeck coefficient and figure of merit are much less sensitive. The high-temperature electrical properties are consistent with charge carrier scattering by acoustic or optical phonons.

Thermal Conductivity Estimation from Transient Test Data with Embedded Thermocouples using Genetic Algorithm Optimization

Inverse heat transfer methodology previously developed to estimate thermal properties of high temperature fibrous insulation from embedded thermocouples was applied to the thermoplastic polymer, polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK). A small experimental setup was utilized to test the PEEK sample between temperatures of 300 K and 525 K at atmospheric pressure. Cylindrical plugs of PEEK with three thermocouples embedded at various depths were incorporated in the test sample. The experimental PEEK thermocouple data were used as the boundary and initial conditions of a one-dimensional numerical thermal model to predict the internal temperatures of the material. The thermal conductivity of PEEK was estimated with the Continuous Genetic Algorithm optimization technique by searching for the coefficients of a functional form of thermal conductivity that minimized the difference between the experimentally measured and model predicted internal temperature values. The thermal testing, one-dimensional numerical thermal model, optimization algorithm, analysis, and results are presented.

Some considerations for various positioning systems and their science capabilities

Containerless processing of materials at elevated temperatures is discussed with emphasis on high temperature chemistry, thermophysical properties, materials science, and materials processing. Acoustic and electromagnetic positioning of high temperature melts are discussed. Results from recent ground based experiments, including KC-135 testing of an acoustic levitator, are presented. Some current positioning technologies and the potential for enhancing them are considered. Further, a summary of these technologies and their science capabilities for the development of future experiments is given.

High temperature permeameter for measuring magnetic properties

Instrument for measuring magnetic permeability of materials undergoing heat treatment as method for monitoring stress relief and tempering is described. Procedure is based on magnetic potentiometer principle with yoke compensating coils to cancel effects of reluctance of yoke and joint gaps. Instrument is heated with specimen being heat treated.

Development of techniques and associated instrumentation for high temperature emissivity measurements

The progress during the sixth quarterly period is reported on construction and assembly of a test facility to determine the high temperature emittance properties of candidate thermal protection system materials for the space shuttle. This facility will provide simulation of such reentry environment parameters as temperature, pressure, and gas flow rate to permit studies of the effects of these parameters on the emittance stability of the materials. Also reported are the completed results for emittance tests on a set of eight Rene 41 samples and one anodized titanium alloy sample which were tested at temperatures up to 1600 F in vacuum. The data includes calorimetric determinations of total hemispherical emittance, radiometric determinations of total and spectral normal emittance, and pre- and post-test room temperature reflectance measurements.

NASA research on refractory compounds.

The behavior and properties of the refractory carbides, nitrides, and borides are being investigated by NASA as part of its research aimed at developing superior heat resistant materials for aerospace applications. Studies of the zirconium-carbon-oxygen system show that zirconium oxycarbides of different compositions and lattice parameters can be formed between 1500 C and 1900 C and are stable below 1500 C. More applied studies show that hot working generally improves the microstructure and therefore the strength of TiC and NbC. Sintering studies on UN indicate that very high densities can be achieved. Hot pressing of cermets of HfN and HfC produces good mechanical properties for high temperature bearing applications. Attempts to improve the impact resistance of boride composites by the addition of a nickel or carbon yarn were not overly successful.
