Osmium coated diffraction grating in the Space Shuttle environment - Performance

Samples coated with osmium were flown on the early Shuttle test flights, and on the return of these samples, the osmium coating was found to have disappeared, evidently due to the oxidation of the material in the atomic oxygen atmosphere. An instrument flown on the Spacelab 1 mission comprised an array of five spectrometers covering the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) to near-IR wavelengths. The EUV spectrometer contained an osmium-coated reflective grating located fairly deep within the instruments. Here, results of an assessment of the reflectivity and stability of the osmium surface over the course of the ten-day mission are reported. It is concluded that the osmium reflective coating remained stable relative to the spectrometer coated with MgF2 over the course of the mission. In addition, the ratio of sensitivity of these two spectrometers did not change in any major way from the time of the laboratory calibration until the time of flight two years later. Any changes are within the 50-percent calibration uncertainty.

A 25.5 percent AMO gallium arsenide grating solar cell

Recent calculations have shown that significant open circuit voltage gains are possible with a dot grating junction geometry. The feasibility of applying the dot geometry to the GaAs cell was investigated. This geometry is shown to result in voltages approach 1.120 V and efficiencies well over 25 percent (AMO) if good collection efficiency can be maintained. The latter is shown to be possible if one chooses the proper base resistivity and cell thickness. The above advances in efficiency are shown to be possible in the P-base cell with only minor improvements in existing technology.

Calculations on the production and use of superfine holographic X-ray gratings for astrophysical observations

Superfine holograhic X-ray gratings may be produced by transferring onto metal an interference pattern generated by two branches of a sufficiently coherent X-ray beam, emitted in the form of synchrotron radiation from high energy electron storage rings. Generation of the coherent beam requires restrictions on the beam size. A calculation is presented which allows an exact evaluation of this restriction. The effect of defocusing optics on the expected resolution is also studied.

On the convergence of an iterative formulation of the electromagnetic scattering from an infinite grating of thin wires

Contraction theory is applied to an iterative formulation of electromagnetic scattering from periodic structures and a computational method for insuring convergence is developed. A short history of spectral (or k-space) formulation is presented with an emphasis on application to periodic surfaces. The mathematical background for formulating an iterative equation is covered using straightforward single variable examples including an extension to vector spaces. To insure a convergent solution of the iterative equation, a process called the contraction corrector method is developed. Convergence properties of previously presented iterative solutions to one-dimensional problems are examined utilizing contraction theory and the general conditions for achieving a convergent solution are explored. The contraction corrector method is then applied to several scattering problems including an infinite grating of thin wires with the solution data compared to previous works.

Influence of process parameter variation on the reflectivity of sputter-deposited W-C multilayer diffraction gratings

Multilayer W-C diffraction gratings with nominal d spacings of 35 A have been fabricated by magnetron sputter deposition. The peak and integrated reflectivities of these films have been measured with Al K-alpha X-rays and compared to theoretical values. The rms surface roughness has been evaluated. The influence of several sputtering-system process parameters on the reflectivities has been investigated.

A reflection grating spectrometer for the X-ray Multi-Mirror (XMM) space observatory - Design and calculated performance

Attention is given to a spectrometer design candidate for the X-ray Multi-Mirror observatory, being planned by the European Space Agency as a long-lived large-area array of telescopes. The science requirement of moderate resolution spectroscopy in a two octave region with extremely high throughput leads to the use of grazing incidence reflection gratings. It is noted that the sensitivity of the instrument is sufficient to permit the first spectral detection of soft X-ray features in external galaxies.

A 25.5 percent AM0 gallium arsenide grating solar cell

Recent calculations have shown that significant open circuit voltage gains are possible with a dot grating junction geometry. The feasibility of applying the dot geometry to the GaAs cell was investigated. This geometry is shown to result in voltage approach 1.120 V and efficiencies well over 25 percent (AM0) if good collection efficiency can be maintained. The latter is shown to be possible if one chooses the proper base resistivity and cell thickness. The above advances in efficiency are shown to be possible in the P-base cell with only minor improvements in existing technology.

Photoelectrochemical fabrication of sawtooth gratings in n-GaAs

A photoelectrochemical approach is employed to fabricate exceptionally smooth low-pitch grating structures consisting of polished single crystals of (100) oriented n-GaAs in a sawtooth profile. The depth of the edged features is controlled by monitoring the total coulombs passed, and the rate of etching is precisely controlled by the light intensity, minimizing diffusional gradients in the liquid which may impair the uniformity. Symmetrical grooves spaced 10 microns apart will have a depth of 7.14 microns, and typically, 10-20 percent less total charge is required.

The effects of diffusion on population gratings and the stability of ring lasers

The effects of diffusion on the coupling between counterpropagating modes in a two-level medium are studied in the rate equation limit. It is shown that diffusion can greatly decrease saturation gratings in low-pressure gases. Among many other effects which rely on spatial hole burning, this can alter the stability of bidirectional solutions of the third-order Lamb equation model of a ring laser.

Two-beam coupling gain in undoped GaAs with applied dc electric field and moving grating

Experimental results of two-beam coupling gain efficiency in an undoped, semiinsulating GaAs crystal are reported. The highest gain coefficient measured is about 4.5/cm under the condition of an applied electric field of 13 kV/cm and a grating periodicity of 20 microns. The experimental results and theoretical calculations are in reasonable agreement with each other.

Optomechanical design of the grating laser beam combiner (GLBC) laser diode header

A laser diode header has been fabricated for a grating laser beam combiner (GLBC). The laser diode header provides the thermal control, the drive electronics, and the optical system necessary for proper operation of the beam combiner. The diode header is required to provide diffraction limited optical performance while providing correction for worst case defocus aberration, 0.6 mrad excess divergence, and worst case decenter aberration, 1.0 mrad pointing error. The design of the header considered the mechanical design and the optical design together resulting in a small, self-contained header with 0.7 mrad range for focus correction and +/- 2.5 mrad of beam steering. The complete diode header is currently undergoing optical and mechanical performance testing.

Aries x ray objective grating spectrograph

This investigation was initiated in June of 1983. An Aries payload involving a single Wolter 1 telescope was developed and flown under a previous contract and the objective of this work was to add two additional mirrors, nested inside of the then existing mirror and add 12 objective reflection gratings to convert the telescope into a spectrograph. A summary of major milestones in the investigation are given. Results of efforts under this contract prior to 1987 are presented in the form of four reprints of published papers attached to this report. Results of the gamma-ray research are also included in the form of an attached reprint. A summary of other work under the contract since 1987 is given.

Arcsecond grating drive mechanism for operation at 4 K

A grating drive mechanism that achieves arcsecond positional control at both room temperature and 4 K is described. The mechanism accommodates eight equally spaced facets on a 360-deg drum, with each facet having arcsecond control over an angular range of +/-3 deg. The cryogenic portion consists of dry lubricated angular contact bearings, a dc brushless torque motor, and a compact magnetic position sensor capable of less than 1 arcsec rms resolution. Test results demonstrate angular repeatability of less than 2 arcsec rms at 4 K and static power dissipation to the helium bath of less than 100 microW.

Rotary encoding device using polygonal mirror with diffraction gratings on each facet

A device for position encoding of a rotating shaft in which a polygonal mirror having a number of facets is mounted to the shaft and a monochromatic light beam is directed towards the facets. The facets of the polygonal mirror each have a low line density diffraction grating to diffract the monochromatic light beam into a number of diffracted light beams such that a number of light spots are created on a linear array detector. An analog-to-digital converter is connected to the linear array detector for reading the position of the spots on the linear array detector means. A microprocessor with memory is connected to the analog-to-digital converter to hold and manipulate the data provided by the analog-to-digital converter on the position of the spots and to compute the position of the shaft based upon the data from the analog-to-digital converter.

Calibration of a helium-cooled infrared spatial radiometer and grating spectrometer

Methods used by the Space Dynamics Laboratory of Utah State University (SDL/USU) to calibrate infrared sensors are described, using the Infrared Background Signature Survey (IBSS) spatial radiometer and grating spectrometer as examples. A calibration equation and a radiometric model are given for each sensor to describe their responsivity in terms of individual radiometric parameters. The calibration equation terms include dark offset, linearity, absolute responsivity, and measurement uncertainty, and the radiometric model domains include spatial, spectral, and temporal domains. A portable calibration facility, designed and fabricated by SDL/USU, provided collimated, extended, diffuse scatter, and Jones sources in a single cryogenic dewar. This multi-function calibrator allowed calibration personnel to complete a full calibration of the IBSS infrared radiometer and spectrometer in two 15-day periods. A calibration data system was developed to control and monitor the calibration facility, and to record and analyze sensor data.
