CERES Single Scanner Satellite Footprint, TOA, Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF) data in HDF (CER_SSF_TRMM-SIM-VIRS_Edition2-VIRSonly)

The Single Scanner Footprint TOA/Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF) product contains one hour of instantaneous Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) data for a single scanner instrument. The SSF combines instantaneous CERES data with scene information from a higher-resolution imager such as Visible/Infrared Scanner (VIRS) on TRMM or Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Terra and Aqua. Scene identification and cloud properties are defined at the higher imager resolution and these data are averaged over the larger CERES footprint. For each CERES footprint, the SSF contains the number of cloud layers and for each layer the cloud amount, height, temperature, pressure, optical depth, emissivity, ice and liquid water path, and water particle size. The SSF also contains the CERES filtered radiances for the total, shortwave (SW), and window (WN) channels and the unfiltered SW, longwave (LW), and WN radiances. The SW, LW, and WN radiances at spacecraft altitude are converted to Top-of-the-Atmosphere (TOA) fluxes based on the imager defined scene. These TOA fluxes are used to estimate surface fluxes. Only footprints with adequate imager coverage are included on CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Subset_Edition1the SSF which is much less than the full set of footprints on the CERES ES-8 product. CERES Single Scanner Satellite Footprint, TOA, Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF) data in HDF (CER_SSF_Aqua-FM4-MODIS_Edition1B)

Large eddy simulations of compressible turbulent flows

An evaluation of existing models for Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of incompressible turbulent flows has been completed. LES is a computation in which the large, energy-carrying structures to momentum and energy transfer is computed exactly, and only the effect of the smallest scales of turbulence is modeled. That is, the large eddies are computed and the smaller eddies are modeled. The dynamics of the largest eddies are believed to account for most of sound generation and transport properties in a turbulent flow. LES analysis is based on an observation that pressure, velocity, temperature, and other variables are the sum of their large-scale and small-scale parts. For instance, u(i) (velocity) can be written as the sum of bar-u(i) and u(i)-prime, where bar-u(i) is the large-scale and u(i)-prime is the subgrid-scale (SGS). The governing equations for large eddies in compressible flows are obtained after filtering the continuity, momentum, and energy equations, and recasting in terms of Favre averages. The filtering operation maintains only large scales. The effects of the small-scales are present in the governing equations through the SGS stress tensor tau(ij) and SGS heat flux q(i). The mathematical formulation of the Favre-averaged equations of motion for LES is complete.

Recent Updates in the SMAP Level-4 Soil Moisture Algorithm

The NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission generates, among other data sets, the Level-4 Soil Moisture (L4_SM) product. The L4_SM data are published with a mean latency of ~2.5 days from the time of observation and provide global, three-hourly, 9-km resolution estimates of surface and root-zone soil moisture and related land surface states and fluxes. The L4_SM algorithm is based on the assimilation of SMAP radiometer brightness temperature observations into the NASA Catchment land surface model using a spatially distributed ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF). In 2018, the L4_SM algorithm was upgraded from Version 3 to Version 4. Underlying the new version is a revised modeling system that includes improved input parameter datasets for land cover, topography, and vegetation height that are based on recent, high-quality, space-borne remote sensing observations. Additionally, SMAP Level-2 soil moisture retrievals and in situ soil moisture measurements were used to calibrate a particular Catchment model parameter that governs the recharge of surface soil moisture from below under non-equilibrium conditions, which brings the model's surface soil moisture more in line with the SMAP Level-2 and in situ soil moisture. Moreover, the calibration of the assimilated SMAP brightness temperatures changed substantially from Version 3 to Version 4, and the "catchment deficit" model variable was removed from the EnKF state vector to avoid degrading the model's groundwater estimates.Considerable effort went into the version upgrade, creating an expectation that the new version is improved over the old version. Indeed, some aspects of the new version are clearly better. However, other aspects are not. In this presentation we summarize the skill of the new and old versions vs. independent in situ measurements and in terms of data assimilation diagnostics, including, for example, the statistics of the (soil moisture) analysis increments and the observation-minus-forecast (brightness temperatures) residuals. We share our experience with trying to improve to the L4_SM product and the lessons learned from the effort.

The influence of assimilating leaf area index in a land surface model on global water fluxes and storages

Vegetation plays a fundamental role not only in theenergy and carbon cycles but also in the global water balanceby controlling surface evapotranspiration (ET). Thus, accu-rately estimating vegetation-related variables has the poten-tial to improve our understanding and estimation of the dy-namic interactions between the water, energy, and carbon cy-cles. This study aims to assess the extent to which a land sur-face model (LSM) can be optimized through the assimilationof leaf area index (LAI) observations at the global scale. Twoobserving system simulation experiments (OSSEs) are per-formed to evaluate the efficiency of assimilating LAI into anLSM through an ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) to estimateLAI, ET, canopy-interception evaporation (CIE), canopy wa-ter storage (CWS), surface soil moisture (SSM), and terres-trial water storage (TWS). Results show that the LAI dataassimilation framework not only effectively reduces errorsin LAI model simulations but also improves all the modeledwater flux and storage variables considered in this study (ET,CIE, CWS, SSM, and TWS), even when the forcing pre-cipitation is strongly positively biased (extremely wet con-ditions). However, it tends to worsen some of the modeledwater-related variables (SSM and TWS) when the forcingprecipitation is affected by a dry bias. This is attributed tothe fact that the amount of water in the LSM is conservative, and the LAI assimilation introduces more vegetation, whichrequires more water than what is available within the soil
