TRACER UAS CU RAAVEN Flight Data

This dataset includes observations collected using the University of Colorado RAAVEN small Uncrewed Aircraft System (sUAS) during the TRACER Intensive Operations Period. These observations include flights conducted at two primary locations, including an area near the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge and the University of Houston Coastal Center. Flights were conducted for approximately two weeks per month between June and the end of September, and include two primary flight modes. The first mode is a spiraling profile between the surface and 600 m above ground level, and the second mode includes flight conducted in a series of stepped altitudes between 600 and 20 m above ground level.

VOC Measurements Eastern North Atlantic June-July 2022

Six weeks of continuous, high time resolution measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were made by a proton transfer reaction mass spectrometer with a coupled gas chromatography (GC) front-end at the ARM Eastern North Atlantic site during the Aerosol Growth in the Eastern North Atlantic campaign. We report the time series of 12 molecules in parts per trillion at 5 minute averaging time as well as isoprene from GC samples. Molecules include both biogenic and anthropogenic species that contribute to the total measured VOC at the site.

Understanding Asteroid 16 Psyche’s composition through 3D impact crater modeling

Asteroid 16 Psyche is the largest M-type (metallic) Main Belt Asteroid (MBA). Radar albedo data indicate Psyche’s surface is rich in metallic content, but estimates for Psyche’s bulk structure vary widely, with bulk density estimates ranging from 1.4 ± 0.3 g/cm 3 to 4.5 ± 1.4 g/cm 3 and porosity estimates ranging from 30% to 70%. A forthcoming NASA discovery mission will visit Psyche. Narrowing the range of estimated compositions of Psyche prior to mission launch can help to determine the necessary tools for asteroid analysis. Psyche has two large impact structures in its Southern hemisphere, with estimated diameters from 50 km to 70 km and estimated depths up to 6.4 km. In this work, we present results from 2D and 3D hydrocode simulations of the largest of these impact structures. Through quantitative comparison of the simulated crater dimensions with measured values, our models suggest that Psyche is largely composed of porous, metallic material. In addition, to match the crater dimensions, our simulations indicate that the angle of impact was significantly altered from vertical by 45–60 degrees.

Exploring density and strength variations in asteroid 16 Psyche’s composition with 3D hydrocode modeling of its deepest impact structure

Asteroid 16 Psyche is the largest metallic Main Belt Asteroid and is the subject of a forthcoming NASA mission. The composition of Psyche is still unknown and subject of recent debate. In particular, how much porosity is within Psyche, along with how much of Psyche consists of non-metallic versus metallic materials, are central questions to the issue of Psyche’s composition. If Psyche is indeed predominantly composed of metallic materials, it would need to have considerable porosity (~ 30%–50%) for a composition consistent with its expected bulk density (~ 3.7–4.1 g/cm). In this work, we vary the density and strength of Psyche by including uniform and layered fields of pseudo-microporosity, in addition to investigating the presence of macroscopic voids, i.e., spaces larger than the size of the simulation’s mesh cells, in rubble-pile configurations. Further, all configurations result in bulk densities within the uncertainties of measured values, however the strength of Psyche and the distribution of pseudo-pores are varied. Through 3D computational models of Psyche’s deepest impact structure, we show that Psyche’s composition is unlikely to contain only pseudo-microporosity. Rather, rubble pile structures, which include macroscopic voids, are shown to match the crater’s measured aspect ratio better than simulations of structures that included only pseudo-microporosity.

PHELIX Shallow Cassette Liner Performance Tests 1 and 2 Post-Shot Simulation Report

PHELIX shallow cassette liner performance Tests 1 (PHELIX No. 151) and 2 (PHELIX No. 156) were conducted on August 07, 2020, and September 16, 2020, respectively. The primary purpose for these tests was to assess liner performance within the new shallow cassette PHELIX design configuration. Specific goals included: (1) an assessment of liner performance in terms of velocity and symmetry (both axial and azimuthal), and (2) an assessment of our ability to accurately predict liner performance. Test 1 was conducted with a driving potential of 70 kV. Test 2 was conducted with a driving potential of 75 kV.

CSAPR2 cell-tracking data collected during TRACER

One of the challenges of analyzing convective cell properties is quick evolution of the individual convective cells. While the operational radar data provide great a data set to analyze the evolution of radar observables of convective precipitation clouds statistically, previous studies also suggested that, because of the quick evolution of cell life cycle, conventional radar volume scan strategies taking ~5-7 minutes might not capture the detailed evolution. The TRACER campaign deployed CSAPR2, which performed frequent update of RHI and sector PPI scans to track convective cells every < 2 minutes guided by a new cell-tracking framework, Multisensor Agile Adaptive Sampling (MAAS; Kollias et al. 2020). This allows for capturing fast-evolving radar observables. The submitted data files are CSAPR2 data in CfRadial format collected during the TRACER field campaign from June to September 2020. The data files include processed radar variables including: noise-masked reflectivity and differential reflectivity corrected for rain attenuation and systematic biases, noise-masked dealiased radial velocity, specific differential phase, locations of target cells (latitude, longitude, radar range), and radar-echo classification.

Ice-nucleating particles (INPs) concentrations from SAIL-Net

This data set contains ice-nucleating particle (INP) concentration spectra collected during the SAIL-Net sampling period, which complemented the Surface Atmosphere Integrated Field Laboratory (SAIL) campaign in the East River watershed near Crested Butte, Colorado. SAIL-Net was a distributed aerosol measurement network designed to investigate aerosol variability across complex mountainous terrain. The data set includes samples from multiple SAIL-Net sites, including AOS, Gothic, Snodgrass, Pumphouse, Irwin, and Top. INP concentrations are reported as a function of freezing temperature, together with confidence limits, sampling times, site location, elevation, sampled air volume, and treatment information. These data provide an analysis-ready record of the INPs across the SAIL-Net network.
