Unraveling Impurity-Dependent Morphological and Chemical Evolution of Ni–20Cr Alloy in Eutectic LiCl–KCl Molten Salt
Understanding the interfacial evolution of alloys in molten salt with different amounts of water (H 2 O) and oxygen (O 2 ) impurities is significant for applications in many fields, including concentrated solar power, molten salt reactors, and applications in pyrochemical reprocessing and electrorefining. Additionally, the impurity-driven corrosion mechanisms that lead to various morphological and chemical evolution characteristics at the interfaces of structural alloys and molten salts are not fully understood. In the present work, the three-dimensional (3D) morphological evolution of Ni-20Cr microwires in LiCl-KCl was studied at 500 °C under different moisture and oxygen conditions using in situ synchrotron transmission X-ray microscopy (TXM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) techniques. No significant morphological changes were observed in Ni-20Cr microwires under vacuum conditions. However, the wires exhibited distinct morphological evolutions when exposed to molten salt containing H 2 O alone, as well as when both H 2 O and O 2 were present. Furthermore, Cr 2 O 3 precipitates were observed in the molten salt during corrosion with only H 2 O present, while Cr 6+ species were identified in the salt when O 2 was added. Further, these findings are crucial for understanding the corrosion mechanisms of molten salt with different amounts of H 2 O and O 2 contamination, providing insights for developing corrosion mitigation methods and improving the stability of containment alloys in molten salt applications.

Deep Eutectic Solvent Formed by Imidazolium Cyanopyrrolide and Ethylene Glycol for Reactive CO 2 Separations
Solvents made from a reactive ionic liquid, with an imidazolium cation and pyrrolide anion, and ethylene glycol at a wide compositional range were studied for separations of CO 2 at low partial pressures (<<0.1 bar up to 1 bar). Thermal analysis and measurements of viscosity and density show compacting of the liquid upon mixing with enhanced stability achieved by hydrogen bonding. A detailed mechanistic study was performed by IR, quantitative NMR, and ab initio calculations that show significant CO 2 absorption capacity below 5000 ppm of CO 2 in N 2 . Three reversible routes are found that yield carbonate (major product), carboxylate (moderate), and carbamate (minor) species. With CO 2 at 100% RH, bicarbonate along with carbonate species form. The CO 2 -ethlyene glycol reaction complex, the carbonate anion, is stabilized by the hydrogen bonding and Coulombic interactions, thus preventing evaporation of the solvent during regeneration. This study demonstrates a promising approach to designer green solvents for CO 2 separations in open systems such as direct air capture.

Synthesis of cobalt grown from Co-S eutectic in high magnetic fields
Samples of Co were grown directly in the ferromagnetic state under equilibrium conditions using a cobalt sulfide flux. Magnetic fields up to 9 T were applied during growth, and isolated Co products exhibit progressively elongated morphologies, from cubes to rectangular rods to needle-like tendrils with poorly-defined facets. The degree of elongation of the major axis was found to correlate with magnetic field direction, strength, and gradient. Two-dimensional X-ray diffraction data indicate some level of polycrystalline-like samples, and quantitative analyses (Le Bail and Rietveld) of the one-dimensional data confirm the presence of hcp and fcc phases. The magnetic responses indicate a partial alignment of the magnetic easy-axis of the hcp phase along the magnetic field present during growth.
