Millimeter wave surface resistance of RBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (R=Y,Eu,Dy,Sm,Er) superconductors

The measurements are reported of the millimeter wave surface resistance R(sub s) at 58.6 GHz of bulk samples of RBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (R = Y,Eu,Dy,Sm,Er) and of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) superconducting films, in the temperature range from 20 to 300 K. The bulk samples were prepared by cold pressing the powders of RBa2Cu3O(7-delta) into one in. disks. The powders were prepared by several sinterings in one atmosphere of oxygen at 925 C, with grindings between sinterings, to obtain the superconducting phase. The thin films were deposited on SrTiO3 and LaGaO3 substrates by pulsed laser ablation. Each sample was measured by replacing the end wall of a gold-plated Te sub 013 circular mode copper cavity with the sample and determining the cavity quality factor . From the difference in the Q-factor of the cavity, with and without the sample, the R(sub s) of the sample was determined.

Characterisation of frequency doubling in Eu(2+) doped aluminosilicate fibres

The results of a series of experiments on efficient second-harmonic generation in a fiber with a Eu(2+)-doped aluminosilicate core are reported. The fiber was prepared by the seeding method with CW mode-locked radiation at 1.06 micron and produced ultrastable peak conversion efficiencies of 0.001 during mode-locked readout. Experiments were performed to determine the IR preparation intensity dependence, the stability of the output, and the type of erasure mechanisms which occur. The results are compared with those of germanosilicate fibers and some similarities and differences are discussed.

EU Accession and Civil Aviation Regimes: Malta and Cyprus as a Case Study

Aviation deregulation is usually a challenging and demanding task and accession to the European Union requires that all candidate states should harmonize their legislation in the context of the European Common Aviation Area. Malta and Cyprus, the small Mediterranean island-states to join the EU in 2004, will have to abandon any protectionist policies in favour of their flag-carriers and let them survive in a liberal framework. The paper discusses the implications of this regime change for civil aviation in Malta and Cyprus and in addition to the airline industry, it examines the impacts on the complementary tourism sector. Unless carrying capacity limits are understood, the islands may become victims of successful airline liberalisation. The paper concludes by stressing the need for sustainable development and active policy making. Keywords: carrying capacity, Cyprus, air transport deregulation, Malta, tourism

Investigating the Role of Vacancies on the Thermoelectric Properties of EuCuSb‐Eu 2 ZnSb 2 Alloys

Abstract AMX compounds with the ZrBeSi structure tolerate a vacancy concentration of up to 50 % on the M ‐site in the planar MX ‐layers. Here, we investigate the impact of vacancies on the thermal and electronic properties across the full EuCu 1− x Zn 0.5 x Sb solid solution. The transition from a fully‐occupied honeycomb layer (EuCuSb) to one with a quarter of the atoms missing (EuZn 0.5 Sb) leads to non‐linear bond expansion in the honeycomb layer, increasing atomic displacement parameters on the M and Sb‐sites, and significant lattice softening. This, combined with a rapid increase in point defect scattering, causes the lattice thermal conductivity to decrease from 3 to 0.5 W mK −1 at 300 K. The effect of vacancies on the electronic properties is more nuanced; we see a small increase in effective mass, large increase in band gap, and decrease in carrier concentration. Ultimately, the maximum zT increases from 0.09 to 0.7 as we go from EuCuSb to EuZn 0.5 Sb.

Phyllosticta paracitricarpa is synonymous with the EU quarantine fungus P. citricarpa based on phylogenomic analyses

Phyllosticta citricarpa is an important citrus-pathogen and a quarantine organism in the European Union. Its recently described relative, P. paracitricarpa, is very closely related and not listed as a quarantine organism. P. paracitricarpa is very difficult to distinguish from P. citricarpa, since its morphological features overlap and the barcoding gene sequences that were originally used to delimit them as distinct species have a low number of species-specific polymorphisms that have subsequently been shown to overlap between the two clades. Therefore, we performed extensive genomic analyses to determine whether the genetic variation between P. citricarpa and P. paracitricarpa strains should be considered to represent infraspecific variation within P. citricarpa, or whether it is indicative of distinct species. Using a phylogenomic analysis with 3,000 single copy ortholog genes and whole-genome comparisons, we determined that the variation between P. citricarpa and P. paracitricarpa can be considered as infraspecies variation within P. citricarpa. We also determined the level of variation in mitochondrial assemblies of several Phyllosticta species and concluded there are only minimal differences between the assemblies of P. citricarpa and P. paracitricarpa. Thus, using several orthogonal approaches, we here demonstrate that variation within the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes of other Phyllosticta species is larger than variation between genomes obtained from P. citricarpa and P. paracitricarpa strains. Thus, P. citricarpa and P. paracitricarpa should be considered as conspecific.

Bringing forward the development of battery cells for automotive applications: Perspective of R&D activities in China, Japan, the EU and the USA

The recent development of high-performance Li-ion battery cells has sparked intensive revolutions in our society. After enabling the wireless communication, Li-ion batteries are paving the way towards a full transition to electromobility. However, the search and need for batteries with improved performance and safety at reduced cost is still ongoing. Therefore, substantial economical efforts are put in place. The 12th edition of the annual International Conference on Advanced Lithium Batteries for Automobile Applications (ABAA-12), held in October 2019 in Ulm, Germany, has been an insightful meeting during which policy makers from China, Germany, Japan, the European Commission and the USA provided an in-depth description of their respective visions on how to bring forward this technology. In this paper, we aim to give insights about the presented R&D trends and the current penetration of electric vehicles in the mass market.
