Analysis of propagation of waves of acoustic frequencies in curved ducts

The propagation of waves of acoustic frequencies in curved ducts of rectangular cross section is studied for the first four modes. The analysis makes use of Bessel functions of the order (n + 1/2) to construct curves of wavenumber in the duct versus imposed wavenumber and to determine the profile of vibrational velocities. A wide range of duct widths and unrestricted radii of curvature have been considered. The characteristics of motion in a bend are compared with propagation of waves in a straight duct, and important differences in the behavior of waves are noted.

Sound propagation in curved ducts

An analysis of the sound field in a circularly curved duct of rectangular cross-section is carried out for both rigid and locally-reacting absorbing walls. The field is excited by a piston source at one end of the duct section, and comparisons of the acoustic field and the net power flow along the duct axis are made with corresponding results for a straight duct section for various frequencies. It is found that in general the curved duct yields a significant increase in sound attenuation along the duct axis as compared to the straight duct.

Curved branching crystals and differentiation in comb-layered rocks

An investigation is conducted concerning two common features of comb layered rocks. Attention is given to the curvature of oriented, elongate, branching crystals and the tendency to form highly differentiated layers. Crystallization studies of plagioclase show that some degree of supercooling is necessary to produce the skeletal, curved, and branching plagioclase crystal morphologies found in comb-layered rocks and that curved crystals can be grown without the presence of a directed stress.

The rotation curve of NGC 3115

A rotation curve is derived for the S0 galaxy NGC 3115 from its absorption-line spectrum. The central velocity is 728 (+ or - 9) km/sec. The rotation curve rises to 260 km/sec at 25 arc sec from the nucleus, and remains constant at that value to the limit of the measurements. A rough computation of the mass gives 24 billion solar masses out to 3.4 kpc, and a mass-to-light ratio of 20 to the same radius.

An interactive graphics program to retrieve, display, compare, manipulate, curve fit, difference and cross plot wind tunnel data

The Aerodynamic Data Analysis and Integration System (ADAIS), developed as a highly interactive computer graphics program capable of manipulating large quantities of data such that addressable elements of a data base can be called up for graphic display, compared, curve fit, stored, retrieved, differenced, etc., was described. The general nature of the system is evidenced by the fact that limited usage has already occurred with data bases consisting of thermodynamic, basic loads, and flight dynamics data. Productivity using ADAIS of five times that for conventional manual methods of wind tunnel data analysis is routinely achieved. In wind tunnel data analysis, data from one or more runs of a particular test may be called up and displayed along with data from one or more runs of a different test. Curves may be faired through the data points by any of four methods, including cubic spline and least squares polynomial fit up to seventh order.

A technique for generating arbitrarily shaped curved approach paths

A technique for creating and using arbitrarily curved flight paths is described, in conjunction with either automatic or manual guidance. Operating techniques for VTOL aircraft in the terminal area environment are investigated. Straight lines and elliptical segments to connect a series of data points into a continous approach path were developed. Software was created to allow the generation of arbitrarily shaped altitude and speed profiles in conjunction with the lateral curved paths.

Correlation between nonequilibrium thermodynamic theory and V-I curves of a thermionic converter

The methods of irreversible thermodynamics are used as a basis for developing a transport theory applicable to thermionic cesium diodes. This theory is applied in describing certain aspects of experimental voltage-current (V-I) characteristic curves of a thermionic diode. Emphasis is placed on the open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current of the V-I curves. Experimental results show that the open-circuit voltage is essentially independent of the interelectrode spacing, whereas the short-circuit current varies inversely with the interelectrode separation. The inverse dependence is in agreement with the results of the present analysis and also with results expected from diffusion theory, which has been used in other analyses. In fact, the theory used in this investigation reduces to diffusion theory under special assumptions. Deviations from diffusion theory, which were found in experimental results, can be accounted for using the theory developed in this paper.

Effects of tidal distortion on binary-star velocity curves and ellipsoidal variation

Radial velocity curves for the more massive components of binaries with extreme mass ratios can show a large distortion due to tides, as first recognized by Sterne. Binaries in which the effect is large should be rare because nearly all such binaries would be in the rapid phase of mass transfer. However, the optical counterparts of some X-ray binaries may show the effect, which would then serve as a new means of extracting considerable information from the observations. The essential parts of the computational procedure are given. Light curves for ellipsoidal variables with extreme mass ratios were also computed, and were found to be less sinusoidal than those with normal mass ratios.

An elementary theory of eclipsing depths of the light curve and its application to Beta Lyrae

An elementary theory of the ratio of depths of secondary and primary eclipses of a light curve has been proposed for studying the nature of component stars. It has been applied to light curves of Beta Lyrae in the visual, blue, and far-ultraviolet regions with the purpose of investigating the energy sources for the luminosity of the disk surrounding the secondary component and determining the dominant radiative process in the disk. No trace of the spectrum of primary radiation has been found in the disk. Therefore, it is suggested that LTE is the main radiative process in the disk, which radiates at a temperature of approximately 12,000 K in the portion that undergoes eclipse. A small source corresponding to 14,500 K has also been tentatively detected and may represent a hot spot caused by hydrodynamic flow of matter from the primary component to the disk.

Development of a curved pipe capability for the NASTRAN finite element program

A curved pipe element capability for the NASTRAN structural analysis program is developed using the NASTRAN dummy element feature. A description is given of the theory involved in the subroutines which describe stiffness, mass, thermal and enforced deformation loads, and force and stress recovery for the curved pipe element. Incorporation of these subroutines into NASTRAN is discussed. Test problems are proposed. Instructions on use of the new element capability are provided.

Multiple curved descending approaches and the air traffic control problem

A terminal area air traffic control simulation was designed to study ways of accommodating increased air traffic density. The concepts that were investigated assumed the availability of the microwave landing system and data link and included: (1) multiple curved descending final approaches; (2) parallel runways certified for independent and simultaneous operation under IFR conditions; (3) closer spacing between successive aircraft; and (4) a distributed management system between the air and ground. Three groups each consisting of three pilots and two air traffic controllers flew a combined total of 350 approaches. Piloted simulators were supplied with computer generated traffic situation displays and flight instruments. The controllers were supplied with a terminal area map and digital status information. Pilots and controllers also reported that the distributed management procedure was somewhat more safe and orderly than the centralized management procedure. Flying precision increased as the amount of turn required to intersect the outer mark decreased. Pilots reported that they preferred the alternative of multiple curved descending approaches with wider spacing between aircraft to closer spacing on single, straight in finals while controllers preferred the latter option. Both pilots and controllers felt that parallel runways are an acceptable way to accommodate increased traffic density safely and expeditiously.

Scattering in the atmosphere of Venus. I - Line profiles and curves of growth for isotropic scattering

Line profiles and curves of growth were computed for both reflected and transmitted radiation for typical lines in CO2 bands (in the photographic infrared) which occur in the spectrum of Venus. In the model, the pressure variation with altitude was considered, and the base of the cloud deck was set at the 2 bar level. The temperature was held constant at 250 K, and a Voigt profile was used for the line shape. It was also assumed that the scale height of the cloud particles was equal to the scale height of the gas. The calculations were made for four values of the scattering optical thickness (0.1, 1.0, and 100) using a continuum single-scattering albedo of 0.9975 (which gives a Bond albedo of 0.896 for a scattering optical thickness of 100, the value observed for Venus at these wavelengths). Curves of growth are also presented for reflected radiation which has been averaged over the visible disk for three values of the Venus phase angle (0, 86, and 166 deg).

Study of a light curve of Beta Persei at 3428 A

Photometric light-curve data obtained during Copernicus satellite observations of Beta Persei in the Balmer continuum at 3428 A are analyzed and reduced. A small but significant fluctuation with a period of very nearly 0.069167 day in the photometric counts is tentatively attributed to a small perturbation in spacecraft attitude introduced each time the satellite passes from daylight into darkness. The light curve is intensity-rectified, phase-rectified, and solved on the assumption that the limb darkening follows the linear cosine law. The resulting distributions of luminosity among the three components of Beta Persei are plotted, and it is shown that the effective temperature of Algol B may be higher than 5000 K.

Doubly-curved variable-thickness isoparametric heterogeneous finite element

This paper describes an element streamlined for the analysis of doubly-curved, variable-thickness structural components and illustrates its effective application to vibration and static problems. The element is isoparametric, doubly-curved, thin-shell and triangular with variable thickness and accounts for anisotropic, inhomogeneous elastic material behavior. The element has six nodes (three corner and three mid-side) with five degrees-of-freedom (DOF) per node - three translations and two rotations. Quadratic isoparametric interpolation polynomials are used to express the element geometry and displacement variables in terms of corresponding nodal variables.

Preliminary results with microchannel array plates employing curved microchannels to inhibit ion feedback

Up to now, microchannel array plates (MCPs) have been constructed with microchannels having a straight geometry and hence have been prone to ion-feedback instabilities at high operating potentials and high ambient pressures. This paper describes the performances of MCPs with curved (J and C configuration) microchannels to inhibit ion feedback. Plates with curved microchannels have demonstrated performances comparable to those of conventional channel electron multipliers with saturated output pulse-height distributions and modal gain values in excess of 10 to the 6th electrons/pulse.

Design curves for double-heterojunction laser diodes

This paper reviews theoretical double-heterojunction laser design curves relating the structure with the transverse mode order able to propagate, the degree of radiation confinement to the active region, the maximum field intensity within the device, and the radiated beam shape. The curves presented are general and applicable to any double-heterojunction structure where the spacing of the heterojunctions and the refractive index in the relevant regions are known.

Potential drops above pulsar polar caps - Ultrarelativistic particle acceleration along the curved magnetic field

The paper calculates the acceleration of a nonneutral stream of charged particles from the surface of an isolated rotating magnetized neutron star in the case where the particle stream flows along the open field lines of a curved poloidal magnetic field. It is shown that very large electrostatic potential drops can occur in steady unidirectional space-charge-limited flow along the curved open field lines. The explicit incorporation of magnetic field line curvature is the essential element leading to this new result, assuming that all the charges are supplied by emission from the surface. It is emphasized that the current flow and charge density are unique if all of the assumptions are met, with the result that the accelerating electric field near the stellar surface is quite small compared to the vacuum field.

Flight experience with advanced controls and displays during piloted curved decelerating approaches in a powered-lift STOL aircraft

A program to assess the feasibility of piloted STOL approaches along predefined, steep, curved, and decelerating approach profiles was carried out with a powered-lift STOL aircraft. To reduce the pilot workload associated with the basic control requirements of a powered-lift aircraft equipped with redundant controls and operating on the backside of the power curve, separate stability augmentation systems for attitude and speed were provided, as well as a supporting flight director and special electronic cockpit displays. The control, display, and procedural features are described for the flight experiment that led to the conclusion that, given an adequate navigation environment, such constrained approaches may be feasible from a pilot acceptance point of view.
