Construction of large space structures

The paper examines a construction capability to build large structures in space, its use in conjunction with the Shuttle Orbiter and a large Space Construction Base, and its relationship to system performance and cost. The geodetic beam design using a tetrahedral truss structure and reinforced plastics and its structural analysis, tests of demonstration cylinders, and preliminary machine design are discussed. The geodetic structure is shown to have high buckling stability, low thermal distortion, high stiffness, and its simple shape permits high-production-rate automatic fabrication. The geodetic beam fabrication machine which will automatically fabricate cylindrical beams in space from earth-prefabricated rods, and on-orbit beam and platform fabrication are described. Preliminary results of system performance and cost studies indicate that on-orbit fabrication using a small geodetic beam machine can be economically superior to the deployable and erectable modes of construction for many near term applications.

Algorithm for constructing the programmed motion of a bounding vehicle for the flight phase

The construction of the programmed motion of a multileg bounding vehicle in the flight was studied. An algorithm is given for solving the boundary value problem for constructing this programmed motion. If the motion is shown to be symmetrical, a simplified use of the algorithm can be applied. A method is proposed for nonimpact of the legs during lift-off of the vehicle, and for softness at touchdown. Tables are utilized to construct this programmed motion over a broad set of standard motion conditions.

Space construction system analysis. Part 2: Cost and programmatics

Cost and programmatic elements of the space construction systems analysis study are discussed. The programmatic aspects of the ETVP program define a comprehensive plan for the development of a space platform, the construction system, and the space shuttle operations/logistics requirements. The cost analysis identified significant items of cost on ETVP development, ground, and flight segments, and detailed the items of space construction equipment and operations.

Space Construction Experiment Definition Study (SCEDS), part 1. Volume 2: Study results

A basic Space Shuttle flight experiment which will provide needed data on the construction of large space systems from the Orbiter was defined. The predicted dynamic behavior of a representative large structure, on-orbit construction operations, and Orbiter control during and after construction were studied. Evolutionary or supplemental flight experiments for the development or augmentation of a basic flight experiment were identified and defined. The study was divided into six major tasks with appropriate sub-tasks noted.

Construction of the SPS primary structure by another method

The construction of the solar power satellite (SPS) primary structure using aluminum foam is discussed. The aluminum is salvaged from expended external tanks. The advantages of this construction system are: (1) saving in launch costs; (2) faster construction rates; (3) possible lower cost structures; (4) promotes containerless processing in orbit; (5) uses almost any space debris; and (6) frees the shuttle cargo bay for other uses.

Grob aircraft construction: The G 110 flies

Description, specifications and test flight performance of the G 110 are provided. The G 110 completely incorporates modern GfK construction techniques which heretofore have been developed and perfected for the construction of sailplanes. The G 110 is a prototype of a GfK constructed motorized aircraft and shows much promise for the future of German aviation.

Construction concept for erecting an offset-fed antenna

A design concept for the construction of an offset-fed antenna is discussed. Antennas of this type are of interest for space applications because the configuration eliminates the effects of feed and feed-support blockage. The proposed construction concept is developed around the assembly of a stiff truss substructure by pressure-suited astronauts operating in extravehicular activity (EVA) assisted by a mobile platform that moves along the structure to position the astronauts at joint locations where they can latch members in place. Construction can be accomplished from the shuttle cargo bay in the course of a normal flight or from a space station platform. The concepts demonstrates the versatility of machine assisted manned assembly and is only one of many potential applications.

Growian rotor blades: Production development, construction and test

Development and construction of three 50 m rotor blades for a 3 MW wind turbine are described. A hybrid concept was chosen, i.e., a load carrying inflexible steel spar and a glass fiber reinforced plastic skin. A test blade was constructed and static loading tests, dynamic vibration tests and fatigue tests on critical welds as well as at the connection between spar and blade skin were performed. All test results show good accordance with calculated values, and were taken into consideration during the construction of two rotor blades.

The construction of airfoil pressure models by the plate method: Achievements, current research, technology development and potential applications

A method of constructing airfoils by inscribing pressure channels on the face of opposing plates, bonding them together to form one plate with integral channels, and contour machining this plate to form an airfoil model is described. The research and development program to develop the bonding technology is described as well as the construction and testing of an airfoil model. Sample aerodynamic data sets are presented and discussed. Also, work currently under way to produce thin airfoils with camber is presented. Samples of the aft section of a 6 percent airfoil with complete pressure instrumentation including the trailing edge are pictured and described. This technique is particularly useful in fabricating models for transonic cryogenic testing, but it should find application in a wide ange of model construction projects, as well as the fabrication of fuel injectors, space hardware, and other applications requiring advanced bonding technology and intricate fluid passages.

Construction and control of large space structures

Recent NASA research efforts on space construction are reviewed. Preliminary results of the EASE/ACCESS Shuttle experiments are discussed. A 45-foot beam was constructed on orbit in 30 minutes using a manual assembly technique at a work station. A large tetrahedron was constructed several times using a free floating technique. The capability of repair, utilities installation, and handling the structures using a mobile foot restraint on the RMS was also demonstrated. Implications of the experiments for space station are presented. Models of 5-meter space station structure together with neutral buoyancy simulations suggest manual assembly techniques are feasible. Selected research on control of flexible structures is discussed.

Nondestructive construction error detection in large space structures

Continuum modeling of large space structures is extended to the problem of detecting construction errors in large space structures such as the proposed space station. First-order dynamic sensitivity equations for structures involving eigenfrequencies, modal masses, modal stiffnesses, and modal damping are presented. Matrix equations relating changes in element parameters to dynamic sensitivities are summarized. The sensitivity equations for the entire dynamical system are rearranged as a system of algebraic equations with unknowns of stiffness losses at selected locations. The feasibility of the formulation is numerically demonstrated on a simply-supported Euler-Bernouilli beam with simulated construction defects. The method is next extended to large space structures modelled as equivalent continua with simulated construction defects.

The generic task toolset: High level languages for the construction of planning and problem solving systems

The current generation of languages for the construction of knowledge-based systems as being at too low a level of abstraction is criticized, and the need for higher level languages for building problem solving systems is advanced. A notion of generic information processing tasks in knowledge-based problem solving is introduced. A toolset which can be used to build expert systems in a way that enhances intelligibility and productivity in knowledge acquistion and system construction is described. The power of these ideas is illustrated by paying special attention to a high level language called DSPL. A description is given of how it was used in the construction of a system called MPA, which assists with planning in the domain of offensive counter air missions.
