A program to compute three-dimensional subsonic unsteady aerodynamic characteristics using the doublet lattice method, L216 (DUBFLEX). Volume 2: Supplemental system design and maintenance document

The information necessary for execution of the digital computer program L216 on the CDC 6600 is described. L216 characteristics are based on the doublet lattice method. Arbitrary aerodynamic configurations may be represented with combinations of nonplanar lifting surfaces composed of finite constant pressure panel elements, and axially summetric slender bodies composed of constant pressure line elements. Program input consists of configuration geometry, aerodynamic parameters, and modal data; output includes element geometry, pressure difference distributions, integrated aerodynamic coefficients, stability derivatives, generalized aerodynamic forces, and aerodynamic influence coefficient matrices. Optionally, modal data may be input on magnetic field (tape or disk), and certain geometric and aerodynamic output may be saved for subsequent use.

The particular field of application of the program is the modification of the theoretical equations of motion and load equations generated in DYLOFLEX by the equation of motion program (L217) and the load equation program (L218), respectively.

Random harmonic analysis program, L221 (TEV156). Volume 2: Supplemental system design and maintenenace document

Volume 2 of a two volume document is presented. A computer program, L222 (TEV 156), available for execution on the CDC 6600 computer is described. The program is capable of calculating steady-state solutions for linear second-order differential equations due to sinusoidal forcing functions. From this, steady-state solutions, generalized coordinates, and load frequency responses may be determined. Statistical characteristics of loads for the forcing function spectral shape may also be calculated using random harmonic analysis techniques. The particular field of application of the program is the analysis of airplane response and loads due to continuous random air turbulence.

An expanded system simulation model for solar energy storage (technical report), volume 1

The simulation model for wind energy storage (SIMWEST) program now includes wind and/or photovoltaic systems utilizing any combination of five types of storage (pumped hydro, battery, thermal, flywheel and pneumatic) and is available for the UNIVAC 1100 series and the CDC 6000 series computers. The level of detail is consistent with a role of evaluating the economic feasibility as well as the general performance of wind and/or photovoltaic energy systems. The software package consists of two basic programs and a library of system, environmental, and load components. The first program is a precompiler which generates computer models (in FORTRAN) of complex wind and/or photovoltaic source/storage/application systems, from user specifications using the respective library components. The second program provides the techno-economic system analysis with the respective I/0, the integration of system dynamics, and the iteration for conveyance of variables.

Analysis of dissection algorithms for vector computers

Recently two dissection algorithms (one-way and incomplete nested dissection) have been developed for solving the sparse positive definite linear systems arising from n by n grid problems. Concurrently, vector computers (such as the CDC STAR-100 and TI ASC) have been developed for large scientific applications. An analysis of the use of dissection algorithms on vector computers dictates that vectors of maximum length be utilized thereby implying little or no dissection; on the other hand, minimizing operation counts suggest that considerable dissection be performed. In this paper we discuss the resolution of this conflict by minimizing the total time required by vectorized versions of the two algorithms.

The current status of super computers

In this paper, commercially available super computers are surveyed. Computer performance in general is limited by circuit speeds and physical size. Assuming the use of the fastest technology, super computers typically use parallelism in the form of either vector processing or array processing to obtain performance. The Burroughs Scientific Processor is an array computer with 16 separate processors, the Cray-1 and CDC STAR-100 are vector processors, the Goodyear Aerospace STARAN is an array processor with up to 8192 single bit processors, and the Systems Development Corporation PEPE is a collection of up to 288 separate processors.

Dynamic model verification of large structural systems

The objective of the present methodology is two-fold: (1) to process test data obtained from either modal survey tests, or slow sine-sweep tests, to extract a set of orthogonal modes best matching the test data while being commensurate with the dynamic model, and (2) to modify submatrices of the dynamic model mass and stiffness matrices to adjust the model to best fit the test data. The method has been implemented using a linear statistical sequential estimator for computation on a CDC computer. Demonstration problems involving Space Shuttle quarter-scale vibration test data and dynamic models have been run. This paper will discuss the general methodology and experience to date.

Computing the Fast Fourier Transform on a vector computer

Two algorithms are presented for performing a Fast Fourier Transform on a vector computer and are compared on the Control Data Corporation STAR-100. The relative merits of the two algorithms are shown to depend upon whether only a few or many independent transforms are desired. A theorem is proved which shows that a set of independent transforms can be computed by performing a partial transformation on a single vector. The results of this theorem also apply to nonvector machines and have reduced the average time per transform by a factor of two on the CDC 6600 computer.

Vector processor algorithms for transonic flow calculations

This paper discusses a number of algorithms for solving the transonic full-potential equation in conservative form on a vector computer, such as the CDC STAR-100 or the CRAY-1. Recent research with the 'artificial density' method for transonics has led to development of some new iteration schemes which take advantage of vector-computer architecture without suffering significant loss of convergence rate. Several of these more promising schemes are described and 2-D and 3-D results are shown comparing the computational rates on the STAR and CRAY vector computers, and the CYBER-175 serial computer. Schemes included are: (1) Checkerboard SOR, (2) Checkerboard Leapfrog, (3) odd-even vertical line SOR, and (4) odd-even horizontal line SOR.

Computation of subsonic and transonic flow about lifting rotor blades

An inviscid, nonconservative, three-dimensional potential flow code has been developed for computing the quasi-steady flow about an isolated lifting rotor blade. Calculations from the code were compared with chordwise pressure measurements obtained in a wind tunnel on a nonlifting rotor at transonic tip speeds at advance ratios from 0.40 to 0.55. The overall agreement between theoretical calculations and experiment was good. To illustrate the early capability of the program, the flow about a hypothetical lifting rotor blade having twist, airfoil thickness taper, and a 20 deg sweptback tip was analyzed at azimuthal positions of 60, 90, and 120 deg for an advance ratio of 0.342. A typical run on a CDC 7600 computer required about 5 min for one rotor position at transonic tip speeds.
