Lasing efficiency of krypton ions in the (8 – 14)-nm band upon pulsed laser excitation

The emission spectra of krypton plasma in the range of 8 – 14 nm upon excitation of a pulsed gas jet by 1.06-mm Nd : YAG laser radiation with a pulse energy of 0.85 J, pulse duration of 5.2 ns, and repetition rate of 10 Hz are investigated. The krypton emission spectrum is a wide (8 – 14 nm) band, peaking at 10.3 nm, which is formed by a series of much narrower lines. The observed lines are identified, and the fraction of laser pulse energy converted into the (8 – 14)-nm emission band and emitted into half-space (2π sr) is determined. The maximum conversion efficiency is found to be 21 %. The expected throughputs of lithographic systems with sources based on Sn, Xe, and Kr ions for different wavelengths, corresponding to the emission peaks of ions of these materials, are compared. Degradation of the contrast of a short light pulse in a CPA system

We have calculated the effect of four-wave mixing of the main radiation pulse with the background radiation components on the value of the output radiation contrast in a chirped pulse amplification system of petawatt laser facilities. Formulae are presented that make it possible to quantify the contributions of two mechanisms, i.e. Kerr nonlinearity of the refractive index of the amplifying medium and gain saturation. For typical values of the nonlinear refractive index, both contributions are comparable. The possibility of mutual quenching of nonlinear contributions is noted. The influence of spectral filtering of radiation on the output pulse contrast is considered. (paper)

Self-compression of laser pulses in a discrete medium

Using the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation, we study the laser radiation self-action dynamics in a nanostructured waveguide system. It is shown that for a laser pulse energy exceeding the critical value, the nonlinear evolution of the wave field markedly differs from the corresponding process in a continuous medium. While the pulse propagates in a discrete medium, its length decreases to values comparable to the scale of the structure and the velocity decreases to zero. The system parameters are determined at which the wave field after the laser pulse termination begins to propagate in the opposite direction in a compressed form. The process of slowing down and stopping the pulse is accompanied by strong radiation losses, so that about a third of the energy of the initial field distribution remains in the final compressed state. Phase-shift speckle-shearing interferometry

We have numerically simulated the process of measuring stress – strain states by the method of speckle-shearing interferometry using the phase-shift technique. A computer model with the possibility of setting its strain and roughness is developed, which includes a model of a diffusely reflecting test object corresponding to the characteristics of a real membrane, as well as a speckle interferometer model that allows speckle interferograms to be obtained for different speckle sizes and angles between interfering beams. The process of reconstructing the object surface topogram from model speckle interferograms by the phase-shift technique is implemented. Using the developed models, a two-dimensional shearogram are obtained, which is a derivative of the strain field of a circular membrane. Comparison of the results of numerical simulation with experimental data shows that the differences (rms deviations) do not exceed 0.02 μm. It is also shown that the error of interferogram reconstruction by the phase-shift technique increases significantly when the test object strains exceed 12 μm. (paper)

Influence of birefringent fibre joints on the visibility drift in a Mach – Zehnder interferometer

It is shown that imperfect joints of linear birefringent fibres in a fibre interferometer may result in an uncontrolled visibility drift under varying environmental conditions even with a standard phase matching device. As an example, a double Mach – Zehnder interferometer is considered, which is employed in schemes of quantum key distribution. Results of numerical simulation demonstrate the standard deviation of the quantum bit error rate (QBER), which is comparable to an average QBER value. (paper)

1.5 – 1.6 μm semiconductor lasers with an asymmetric periodic optically coupled waveguide

High-power 1.5 – 1.6-μm semiconductor lasers with an asymmetric periodic optically coupled waveguide are developed and their current – voltage, light – current, and spectral characteristics are experimentally studied. The characteristics of these lasers are compared with the characteristics of traditional lasers based on double separate-confinement heterostructures. It is shown that the developed lasers have lower divergence and almost the same threshold and power characteristics as conventional lasers with Fabry – Perot resonators. The developed lasers with a cavity length of 1.6 mm and a mesa-stripe contact width of 3 μm mounted in a housing 11 mm in diameter have a power no lower than 200 mW at a pump current not exceeding 700 mA with a divergence of 25 – 35° versus 45° typical for conventional lasers. Decreasing the amplitude of macroscopic quantum fluctuations in the case of transient SRS

It is shown experimentally that, under the conditions of transient stimulated Raman scattering, pumping by two successive orthogonally polarised laser pulses makes it possible to reduce the amplitude of macroscopic quantum energy fluctuations of a Stokes pulse by a factor of 4 in comparison with single-shot pumping. An energy dispersion of 0.9 % for the first Stokes component is obtained in hydrogen at a relative energy dispersion of ytterbium laser pulses of 0.4 %. (nonlinear optical phenomena)

Formula for the ionisation rate of an atom or ion in a strong electromagnetic field for numerical simulation

A formula is proposed for calculating the rate of field ionisation of an atom or ion, taking into account both tunnel ionisation and barrier suppression ionisation. Compared with the previous formula proposed in 2018, it more accurately describes the transition region between both ionisations and is determined mainly by two parameters: the ionisation potential of an atom or ion and the amplitude of an external electric field. This makes the presented formula suitable for use in numerical packages simulating the interaction of high-power laser radiation with matter by the particle-in-cell (PIC) method. (paper)

Mechanism of electron bunching by an ultrarelativistically intense laser pulse when crossing a nonuniform-plasma boundary

Numerical simulations were used to investigate the electron bunching induced by a laser pulse in its penetration into a plasma that has a nonuniform density profile at the vacuum – plasma boundary, which reaches a plateau. A mechanism was found to exist for this plasma which fosters a denser electron grouping in the generated bunch in comparison with the plasma with a sharp boundary. This mechanism is related to the nonstationarity of the wake wave produced by the laser pulse at the beginning of the plasma density plateau. (paper)

Laser cooling of atoms at narrow optical transitions in fields with a polarisation gradient

The efficiency of the polarisation mechanisms of laser cooling of atoms is analysed using narrow optical transitions for which the recoil energy is greater than or comparable to the natural line width. By the example of atoms with the J{sub g} = 1 → J{sub e} = 2 optical transition (J{sub g} and J{sub e} are the total angular momenta of the ground and excited states) in the resonant light fields of σ{sub +} – σ{sub –} and lin⊥lin configurations, the analysis of the minimum achievable energies of laser-cooled atoms is performed. It is shown that the polarisation mechanisms of laser cooling under conditions of a significant influence of recoil effects become less efficient and do not lead to average kinetic energies of an ensemble of atoms below the Doppler limit. Atom femtosecond optical trap based on spectrally filtered laser radiation

We have examined the use of alkali metal (rubidium) vapour for spectral filtering of broadband pulsed laser light that is used to produce a femtosecond pulsed optical dipole trap. It has been shown that, even at large detuning of the centre emission frequency from the frequency of atomic transitions, spectral components present in the wings of the laser emission line are capable of heating localised atoms, thus reducing their lifetime in the atomic trap. Using atomic vapour for filtering the laser emission spectrum, we have suppressed its spectral components resulting in heating. This has made it possible to increase the lifetime of atoms in the pulsed optical dipole trap to a value comparable to their lifetime in an optical trap formed by narrow-band cw laser light. (paper)

Specific features of fluorescence transfer in multiply scattering randomly inhomogeneous layers under intense laser pumping

Based on the analysis of experimental data on the effect of the pulsed laser pump intensity on the spectral properties and the size of the fluorescent response zone in randomly inhomogeneous fluorescent layers, we found that the amplification of spontaneous and stimulated emission significantly affects the statistical properties of the propagation lengths of the fluorescent field partial components in the layers. The experiments are performed with layers of SiO{sub 2} and TiO{sub 2} nanoparticles saturated with rhodamine 6G, pumped by 532-nm laser radiation in the intensity range corresponding to the transient regime from excitation of spontaneous fluorescence to random lasing in the layer. The experimental data are compared with the results of statistical modelling of fluorescence transfer. It is shown that, even at a pump intensity below the random lasing threshold, the spontaneous emission amplification in a layer leads to a significant increase in the contributions to the fluorescence response from partial components with propagation lengths much larger than the layer thickness. This can be interpreted as a manifestation of the quasi-waveguide effect, in which the probability of propagation of diffuse fluorescence components along the layer over distances many times greater than its thickness and the size of the pumped region increases significantly with a decrease in the characteristic radiation amplification length in the layer. Triple integrated laser – thyristor

A triple laser – thyristor, i. e., a semiconductor laser with three emitting sections monolithically integrated with an electronic switch (thyristor) is experimentally studied. For comparison, the output characteristics of single and double laser – thyristors are presented. It is shown that the functional integration of a laser with a thyristor in one heterostructure allows the laser to efficiently operate in a pulsed regime (output power ∼50 W), the use of vertical integration of two laser sections increases the power to ∼90 W, and the integration of three laser sections makes it possible to increase the output optical power to ∼120 W with all other conditions being the same. Strong mutual increase in the efficiency of isotope-selective laser IR dissociation of molecules under nonequilibrium thermodynamic conditions of the compression shock under irradiation in a bimolecular mixture

We have revealed a strong (by a factor of 2 to 5) mutual increase in the yield of IR molecular dissociation (by the example of CF{sub 2}HCl and CF{sub 3}Br) and a significant (by a factor of 1.5 to 3) lowering of dissociation thresholds in the nonequilibrium thermodynamic conditions of compression shock in the irradiation of the molecules by resonance IR laser radiation in the bimolecular mixture in comparison with their individual irradiation. This opens up the possibility to perform efficient isotope-selective IR dissociation of molecules at lower excitation energy densities (Φ ⩽ 1.5 – 2.0 J cm{sup −2}) and thereby to improve the dissociation selectivity. This was demonstrated by the example of chlorine- and bromine-isotope selective dissociation of the specified molecules, which are characterised by quite small (less than 0.25 cm{sup −1}) isotope shifts in the IR vibrational absorption spectra excited by laser radiation. The enrichment coefficients K {sub enr}({sup 35}Cl / {sup 37}Cl) = 0.90 ± 0.05 in the residual CF{sub 2}HCl gas and K {sub enr}({sup 79}Br / {sup 81}Br) in the resultant Br{sub 2} product are obtained when the CF{sub 2}HCl : CF{sub 3}Br = 1 : 1 molecular mixture and CF{sub 3}Br molecules, respectively, are irradiated by the 9R(30) CO{sub 2} laser line (frequency, 1084.635 cm{sup −1}) at an energy density Φ ≈ 1.3 J cm{sup −2}. Synthesis of fluorocarbon nanofilms on titanium using high-power KrF laser radiation

Fluorocarbon (C : F) nanofilms up to 60 nm thick are synthesised on a titanium surface. The films are obtained by annealing thin layers of fluorocarbon oil (FO) (with an area of 0.6 cm{sup 2}) in air with pulsed (80-ns) KrF laser radiation having a fluence of more than 4 J cm{sup −2}. The strength of C : F nanocoatings turns out to be comparable with that of titanium and exceeds several hundred times the corresponding characteristics of Teflon F-4. The high transparency of FO indicates a possibility of using it as a cover liquid when modifying titanium surface using beams of various technological lasers. (paper)

Effect of CO{sub 2}-laser power density on the absorption coefficient of polycrystalline CVD diamonds

The effect of 1-s irradiation of an uncooled polycrystalline CVD diamond plate by a focused cw CO{sub 2} laser beam with a power density of 300 – 800 kW cm{sup −2} is investigated. The absorption coefficient of the sample at a power density of 800 kW cm{sup −2} is found to be 0.035 cm{sup −1} larger as compared with that at 300 kW cm{sup −2}, which is related to the temperature dependence of its phonon-induced absorption with a change in temperature from 44 to 100 °C. It is shown that polycrystalline diamond, in contrast to other optical materials, does not exhibit nonlinear (avalanche-like) rise in absorption at high CO{sub 2}-laser power densities, at least up to 800 kW cm{sup −2}. Two-frequency sub-Doppler spectroscopy of the caesium D{sub 1} line in various configurations of counterpropagating laser beams

Sub-Doppler resonances in caesium vapours are studied in a laser field produced by counterpropagating two-frequency light beams with mutually orthogonal linear polarisations. The beams are in resonance with optical transitions in the D{sub 1} line, the frequency difference of the field spectral components being equal to the hyperfine ground-state splitting in the Cs atom (∼9.2 GHz). It has already been shown that in this configuration, the hypercontrast effect can be observed for sub-Doppler resonances, which makes this configuration promising for the employment in new-generation miniature optical frequency standards. In the present work, two different two-frequency configurations are compared with each other and with the single-frequency configuration widely used in practice for observing saturated absorption resonances. The parameters of nonlinear resonances are measured at various temperatures of caesium vapours and at different optical field intensities. The results of the investigations performed make it possible to find an optimal two-frequency scheme for exciting nonlinear resonances and to estimate a potential of the scheme for its applications in quantum metrology. Radiofrequency synthesiser with an intrinsic instability of 5 × 10{sup −15} at the averaging time of 1 s based on a femtosecond erbium-doped fibre laser

A radio-optical synthesiser intended for operation in a radio-frequency master oscillator with an optical He – Ne/CH{sub 4} frequency standard (λ = 3.39 μm) is developed on the basis of a femtosecond erbium-doped fibre laser. The synthesiser generates equidistant harmonics in the frequency range of 1 – 10 GHz with stability determined by the optical frequency standard. A stable supercontinuum spectrum is formed in the range around 1.06 μm, which provides stable 24-hour operation of the synthesiser and is important for practical applications in off-laboratory conditions. A direct comparison of the output frequencies of two synthesisers shows that the up-grade of the fibre laser and detection system of femtosecond pulses results in the synthesiser intrinsic instability of 5 × 10{sup −15} at the averaging time of 1 s. Such a value is by an order of magnitude less than that obtained in our earlier works. (laser frequency standards)
