Persistent exchange splitting in the chiral helimagnet $\mathrm{Cr}_{1/3}\mathrm{NbS}_2$

Here, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculation, we systematically investigate the electronic structure of the chiral helimagnet Cr 1/3 NbS 2 and its temperature evolution. The comparison with NbS 2 suggests that the electronic structure of Cr 1/3 NbS 2 is strongly modified by the intercalation of Cr atoms. Our ab initio calculation, consistent with experimental results, suggests strong hybridization between Nb- and Cr-derived states near the Fermi level. In the chiral helimagnetic state (below the Curie temperature, T c ), we observe exchange splitting of the energy bands crossing the Fermi level, which follows the temperature evolution of the magnetic moment, suggesting a strong interaction between the conduction electrons and Cr spin moments. Interestingly, the exchange splitting persists far above T c with weak temperature dependence, in drastic contrast to the itinerant ferromagnetism described by the Stoner model, indicating the existence of short-range magnetic order. Our results provide important insights into the interplay between the electronic structure and magnetism in Cr 1/3 NbS 2 , which is helpful for understanding the microscopic mechanism of chiral helimagnetic ordering.

Elastic Antiproton-Nucleus Scattering from Chiral Forces

Elastic scattering of antiprotons off He 4 , C 12 , and O 16 , 18 is described for the first time with a consistent microscopic approach based on the calculation of an optical potential (OP) describing the antiproton-target interaction. The OP is derived using the recent antiproton-nucleon ( p ¯ N ) chiral interaction to calculate the p ¯ N t matrix, while the target densities are computed with the ab initio no-core shell model using chiral interactions as well. Here, our results are in good agreement with the existing experimental data and the results computed at different chiral orders of the p ¯ N interaction display a well-defined convergence pattern.

Radial Spin Texture of the Weyl Fermions in Chiral Tellurium

Trigonal tellurium, a small-gap semiconductor with pronounced magneto-electric and magneto-optical responses, is among the simplest realizations of a chiral crystal. We have studied by spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy its unconventional electronic structure and unique spin texture. We identify Kramers-Weyl, composite, and accordionlike Weyl fermions, so far only predicted by theory, and show that the spin polarization is parallel to the wave vector along the lines in k space connecting high-symmetry points. Our results clarify the symmetries that enforce such spin texture in a chiral crystal, thus bringing new insight in the formation of a spin vectorial field more complex than the previously proposed hedgehog configuration. Our findings thus pave the way to a classification scheme for these exotic spin textures and their search in chiral crystals.

Custodial Chiral Symmetry in a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Electrical Circuit with Memory

Custodial symmetries are common in the standard model of particle physics. They arise when quantum corrections to a parameter are proportional to the parameter itself. Here, we show that a custodial symmetry of the chiral type is also present in a classical Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) electrical circuit with memory. In the absence of memory, the SSH circuit supports a symmetry-protected topological edge state. Memory induces nonlinearities that break chiral symmetry explicitly and spread the state across the circuit. However, the resulting state is still protected against perturbations by the ensuing custodial chiral symmetry. Furthermore, these predictions can be verified experimentally and demonstrate the interplay between symmetry and memory.

Hyperuniform Active Chiral Fluids with Tunable Internal Structure

Large density fluctuations observed in active systems and hyperuniformity are two seemingly incompatible phenomena. However, the formation of hyperuniform states has been recently predicted in nonequilibrium fluids formed by chiral particles performing circular motion with the same handedness. In this work, we report evidence of hyperuniformity realized in a chiral active fluid comprised of pear-shaped Quincke rollers of arbitrary handedness. We show that hyperunifonnity and large density fluctuations, triggered by dynamic clustering, coexist in this system at different length scales. The system loses its hyperuniformity as the curvature of particles' motion increases, transforming them into localized spinners. Our results experimentally demonstrate a novel hyperuniform active fluid and provide new insights into an interplay between chirality, activity, and hyperuniformity.

Conjectures about the Chiral Phase Transition in QCD from Anomalous Multi-Instanton Interactions

To date numerical simulations of lattice QCD have not found a chiral phase transition of first order that is expected to occur for sufficiently light pions. We show how the restoration of an exact global chiral symmetry can strongly decrease the breaking of the approximate, anomalous U A ( 1 ) symmetry. This is testable on the lattice through simulations for one through four flavors. In QCD a small breaking of the U A ( 1 ) symmetry in the chirally symmetric phase generates novel experimental signals. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Strategy for Direct Detection of Chiral Phonons with Phase-Structured Free Electrons

Chiral phonons possessing valley pseudoangular momentum (PAM) underlie a diversity of quantum phenomena of fundamental and applied importance, but are challenging to probe directly. We show that deficiencies of typical momentum-resolved electron energy loss measurements that make it impossible to distinguish the PAM of chiral phonons can be overcome by introducing pinwheel free electron states with well-defined PAM. Transitions between such states generate 2D periodic arrays of in-plane field vortices with polarization textures tailored to selectively couple to desired chiral mode symmetries.

Muon capture on deuteron using local chiral potentials

The muon capture reaction μ – + d → n + n + ν μ in the doublet hyperfine state is studied using nuclear potentials and consistent currents derived in the chiral effective field theory, which are local and expressed in coordinate space (the so-called Norfolk models). Only the largest contribution due to the 1 S 0 nn scattering state is considered. Particular attention is given to the estimate of theoretical uncertainty, for which four sources have been identified: 1) the model dependence, 2) the chiral-order convergence for the weak nuclear current, 3) the uncertainty in the single-nucleon axial form factor, and 4) the numerical technique adopted to solve the bound and scattering A = 2 systems. This last source of uncertainty has turned out to be essentially negligible. For the 1 S 0 doublet muon capture rate Γ D ( 1 S 0 ), we obtain Γ D ( 1 S 0 ) = 255.8(0.6) (4.4)(2.9) s –1 , where the three errors come from the first three sources of uncertainty. The value for Γ D ( 1 S 0 ) obtained within this local chiral framework is compared with previous calculations and found in very good agreement.

The Equation of State of Neutron-Rich Matter at Fourth Order of Chiral Effective Field Theory and the Radius of a Medium-Mass Neutron Star

We report neutron star predictions based on our most recent equations of state. These are derived from chiral effective field theory, which allows for a systematic development of nuclear forces, order by order. We utilize high-quality two-nucleon interactions and include all three-nucleon forces up to fourth order in the chiral expansion. Our ab initio predictions are restricted to the domain of applicability of chiral effective field theory. However, stellar matter in the interior of neutron stars can be up to several times denser than normal nuclear matter at saturation, and its composition is essentially unknown. Following established practices, we extend our microscopic predictions to higher densities matching piecewise polytropes. The radius of the average-size neutron star, about 1.4 solar masses, is sensitive to the pressure at normal densities, and thus it is suitable to constrain ab initio theories of the equation of state. For this reason, we focus on the radius of medium-mass stars. We compare our results with other theoretical predictions and recent constraints.

Chiral Magnetic Josephson Junction as a Base for Low-Noise Superconducting Qubits

The lack of space inversion symmetry endows non-centrosymmetric superconducting materials with various interesting parity-breaking phenomena, including the anomalous Josephson effect. Our paper considers a Josephson junction of two non-centrosymmetric superconductors connected by a uniaxial ferromagnet. We show that this “Chiral Magnetic Josephson junction” (CMJ junction) exhibits a direct analog of the Chiral Magnetic Effect, which has already been observed in Weyl and Dirac semimetals. We suggest that the CMJ can serve as an element of a qubit with a Hamiltonian tunable by the ferromagnet’s magnetization. The CMJ junction avoids using an offset magnetic flux in inductively shunted qubits, thus enabling a simpler and more robust architecture. Furthermore, when the uniaxial ferromagnet’s easy axis is directed across the junction, the resulting “chiral magnetic qubit” provides robust protection from the noise caused by magnetization fluctuations.

Rare-Earth Permanent Magnet SmCo 5 for Chiral Interfacial Spin-Orbitronics

Interfacially asymmetric magnetic multilayers made of heavy metal/ferromagnet have attracted considerable attention in the spintronics community for accommodating spin-orbit torques (SOTs) and meanwhile for hosting chiral spin textures. In these multilayers, the accompanied interfacial Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (iDMI) permits the formation of Néel-type spin textures. While significant progresses have been made in Co, CoFeB, Co 2 FeAl, CoFeGd based multilayers, it would be intriguing to identify new magnetic multilayers that could enable spin-torque controllability and meanwhile host nanoscale skyrmions. In this report, first, thin films made of permanent magnet SmCo 5 with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy are synthesized, in which the deterministic SOT switching, enabled by the spin Hall effect, in Pt/SmCo 5 /Ta trilayer is demonstrated. Further, the stabilization of room-temperature skyrmions with diameters ≈100 nm in [Pt/SmCo 5 /Ta] 15 , together with a skyrmionium-like spin texture in [Pt/SmCo 5 /Ir] 15 multilayers is shown. Based on the material specific parameters, micromagnetic simulations are also carried out. The results confirm the presence of chiral spin textures in this new material family. Through interfacial engineering, the results thus demonstrate that rare earth permanent magnets could be a new platform for studying interfacial chiral spintronics.

Self‐Assembly of Helical Nanofibrous Chiral Covalent Organic Frameworks

Abstract Despite significant progress on the design and synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), precise control over microstructures of such materials remains challenging. Herein, two chiral COFs with well‐defined one‐handed double‐helical nanofibrous morphologies were constructed via an unprecedented template‐free method, capitalizing on the diastereoselective formation of aminal linkages. Detailed time‐dependent experiments reveal the spontaneous transformation of initial rod‐like aggregates into the double‐helical microstructures. We have further demonstrated that the helical chirality and circular dichroism signal can be facilely inversed by simply adjusting the amount of acetic acid during synthesis. Moreover, by transferring chirality to achiral fluorescent molecular adsorbents, the helical COF nanostructures can effectively induce circularly polarized luminescence with the highest luminescent asymmetric factor ( g lum ) up to ≈0.01.

Smectic C Self‐Assembly in Mesogen‐Free Liquid Crystalline Chiral Polyethers with Sulfonylated Methyl‐Branched Side Chains

Abstract To realize advanced electrical applications for ferroelectric liquid crystalline polymers, high spontaneous polarization ( P s ) is highly desired. However, current ferroelectric liquid crystalline polymers usually exhibit a low P s . In this work, mesogen‐free, chiral polyethers containing sulfonylated methyl‐branched alkyl side chains with a (CH 2 ) 3 O spacer between the sulfonyl and the branched alkyl groups are designed and synthesized. In contrast to the linear n ‐alkyl side chains, the methyl‐branched alkyl side chains induce chain tilting in the smectic layers. When double chirality exists in both the main chain and the side chains, a crystalline structure is observed after mechanical stretching. Intriguingly, when single chirality exists in either the backbone or the side chains, a liquid crystalline smectic C phase is obtained. The electric displacement–electric field study, however, does not show typical ferroelectric switching, although the dielectric constants are relatively high for these liquid crystalline polymers. This is likely because the dipole–dipole interactions among neighboring sulfonyl groups along the main chain are so strong that the ferroelectric switching is hindered in the samples. For the future work, it is desired to weaken the dipole–dipole interaction to achieve ferroelectricity in these mesogen‐free liquid crystalline polymers.

2 νββ spectrum in chiral effective field theory

We investigate two-neutrino double beta decay (2νββ) in chiral effective field theory. We find contributions from weak magnetism and double-weak pion-exchange at next-to-leading-order in the chiral power counting. We discuss the impact of the chiral corrections on the electron spectra and find that they should be included in analyses of 2νββ decay that aim to uncover new physics signatures in the electron spectrum. We illustrate this point by revisiting the effect of sterile neutrinos and non-standard charged interactions. We also find that the pion-exchange contributions involve nuclear matrix elements that are related to those appearing in neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ). We investigate whether the 0νββ nuclear matrix elements can be obtained from detailed measurements of the energy spectrum of the outgoing electrons in 2νββ transitions.

Twistorial monopoles & chiral algebras

We initiate the study of how the insertion of magnetically charged states in 4d self-dual gauge theories impacts the 2d chiral algebras supported on the celestial sphere at asymptotic null infinity, from the point of view of the 4d/2d twistorial correspondence introduced by Costello and the second author. By reducing the 6d twistorial theory to a 3d holomorphic-topological theory with suitable boundary conditions, we can motivate certain non-perturbative enhancements of the celestial chiral algebra corresponding to extensions by modules arising from 3d boundary monopole operators. We also identify the insertion of 4d (non-abelian) monopoles with families of spectral flow automorphisms of the celestial chiral algebra.

Ordered hexagonal columnar liquid crystalline self-assembly of mesogen-free sulfonylated side-chain chiral polyethers and their high dielectric property

To achieve large spontaneous polarization for ferroelectric liquid crystalline polymers, we have designed a series of mesogen-free isotactic polyethers with sulfonylated side chains. Different from prior studies using linear alkyl side chains, in this work a methyl branch was implemented in the alkyl side chains of the chiral polyethers. As a result of the continuous twist from the methyl branches and strong dipole-dipole interactions among neighboring sulfonyl groups, a helical chain conformation with tilted side chains was achieved. When the branched side chains were short (e.g., C5) and double chirality existed in both the main chain and side chains, a crystalline structure was obtained. When the branched side chains were long (e.g., ≥ C8) and single chirality existed in the main chain, an ordered hexagonal columnar liquid crystalline phase was induced. Their high-field dielectric property was studied by electric displacement-electric field (D-E) loop tests; however, no ferroelectric behavior was observed up to 200 MV/m. It was considered that the dipole-dipole interaction among neighboring sulfonyl groups in the helical chains was too strong to allow easy ferroelectric flipping.

DFT Mechanism Studies: Biomimetic 1,4-NADH Chemoselective, Co-factor Regeneration with [Cp*Rh(bpy)H] + , in Tandem with the Biocatalysis Pathways of a Core Model of the (HLADH)-Zn(II) Mediated Enzyme, in the Enantioselective Reduction of Achiral Ketones to Chiral S-Alcohols

In this study, Quantum Chemical (QC) calculations, utilizing Density Functional Theory (DFT), were performed to investigate the mechanistic aspects of the chemoselective catalyzed reaction of [Cp*Rh(bpy)H] + with the biomimetic NAD + analogues, N-benzylnicotinamide triflate, 1, and β-nicotinamide ribose-5'-methyl phosphate, 2, in the conversion to their 1,4-NADH analogues, 1,4-dihydro-N-benzylnicotinamide, 4, and β-1,4-dihydronicotinamide-5'-ribose methyl phosphate, 5. This reaction was in tandem with the 1,4-NADH dependent HLADH-Zn(II)- catalyzed reduction of achiral ketones to chiral S-alcohols. The [Cp*Rh(bpy)H] + complex, and not its equilibrium tautomer, [η 4 -Cp*HRh(bpy)] + , was found to control the hydride transfer during the biomimetic NAD + /1,4-NADH conversion, through the non-covalent interactions of the biomimetic co-factors with [Cp*Rh(bpy)H] + . The thermodynamics and kinetics for the chiral reduction of the Zn(II) bound ketones, 2-pentanone and 4-phenyl-2-butanone, with co-factor, 4, catalyzed by Zn(SCH 3 ) 2 (Imidazole), a core model of the Zn(II)-based catalytic center of HLADH, was also investigated by the evaluation of two possible reaction pathways: (1) formation of a ZnH from the C4-H hydride transfer of co-factor, 4, followed by reaction of the postulated ZnH with the bound 2-pentanone or 4-phenyl-2-butanone substrate, and (2), the direct C4-H transfer to the bound achiral ketone substrates, to provide the dominant chiral alcohols, S-2-pentanol or S-4-phenyl-2-butanol. The latter pathway was found most viable, and DFT calculations also revealed an essential η 2 -coordination of the 5,6 double bond of co-factor, 4, to the HLADH-Zn(II) metal ion center, upon imidazole decomplexation, providing an asymmetric differentiation of S-η 2 -5,6-1,4-NADH-Zn(II) binding. A proposed new paradigm for the Zn(II)'s non-innocent role in the HLADH-Zn(II) biocatalysis reduction mechanism, for enantioselective hydride transfer to a Zn(II) bound ketone, providing S-alcohols.
