Johnson Space Center's strategic game plan: Charting a course to the year 2000 and beyond

The Johnson Space Center has established five major goals to meet the Nation's expectation of maintaining U.S. preeminence in space. The first three are technical in nature. They define the basic mission-the reason for being. The two goals relating to the Space Shuttle and Space Station are obviously the most demanding in their immediate claim for major resources. The third goal is equally important in that the technical competence must be maintained and enhanced. The remaining two goals address the two critical success factors required for achieving the first three. One goal pertains to maintaining and enhancing the highly skilled work force. The other goal concerns the important relations with other key members of the U.S. space team. Each goal is listed along with a proposed strategy or approach for implementing each goal. Subsequently, each goal is accompanied by a brief explanation and a set of objectives. These objectives provide the specific targets of opportunity for focusing the immediate efforts.

Apollo 14 regolith breccias - Different glass populations and their potential for charting space time variations

Apollo 14 regolith breccias (14313, 14307, 14301, 14049, 14047) have been found to have different populations of nonagglutinitic, mare-derived glasses. These variations appear to not only reflect different source regoliths but also different closure ages for these breccias. Based upon these different glass populations, 14301 is inferred to have a closure age sometime during the epoch of mare volcanism. All of the other four breccias were formed after the termination of mare volcanism with a possible age sequence from old to young of the following: 14307, 14313, 14049, 14047. Due to the relative simplicity of acquiring high-quality chemical data on large numbers of glasses by electron microprobe, mare glass populations allow: (1) classification of regolith breccias with respect to provenance and (2) estimation of their relative and absolute closure ages. The determination of (Ar-40)-(Ar-39) ages on individual glass spherules within breccias using the laser probe should in the future prove to be a promising extension of the present study.

From Mars to Greenland: Charting gravity with space and airborne instruments - Fields, tides, methods, results

This symposium on space and airborne techniques for measuring gravity fields, and related theory, contains papers on gravity modeling of Mars and Venus at NASA/GSFC, an integrated laser Doppler method for measuring planetary gravity fields, observed temporal variations in the earth's gravity field from 16-year Starlette orbit analysis, high-resolution gravity models combining terrestrial and satellite data, the effect of water vapor corrections for satellite altimeter measurements of the geoid, and laboratory demonstrations of superconducting gravity and inertial sensors for space and airborne gravity measurements. Other papers are on airborne gravity measurements over the Kelvin Seamount; the accuracy of GPS-derived acceleration from moving platform tests; airborne gravimetry, altimetry, and GPS navigation errors; controlling common mode stabilization errors in airborne gravity gradiometry, GPS/INS gravity measurements in space and on a balloon, and Walsh-Fourier series expansion of the earth's gravitational potential.

Charts for determining the pitching moment of tapered wings with sweepback and twist

This report presents a convenient method for calculating the pitching-moment characteristics of tapered wings with sweepback and twist. The method is based on the fact that the pitching-moment characteristics of a wing may be specified by giving the value of the pitching moment at zero lift and the location of the axis about which the axis is constant. Data for calculating these characteristics are presented by curves which apply to wings having a linear distribution of twist along the span and which cover a large range of aspect ratios. The curves are given for wings having straight taper and distorted elliptical plan forms. The characteristics of wings of other shapes may be determined by interpolation.

A general tank test of a model of the hull of the Pem-1 flying boat including a special working chart for the determination of hull performance

The results of a general tank test of a 1/6 full-size model of the hull of the Pem-1 flying boat (N.A.C.A. model 18) are given in non-dimensional form. In addition to the usual curves, the results are presented in a new form that makes it possible to apply them more conveniently than in the forms previously used. The resistance was compared with that of N.A.C.A. models 11-C and 26(Sikorsky S-40) and was found to be generally less than the resistance of either.
