Structure and equation of state of Bi 2 Sr 2 Ca n-1 Cu n O 2n+4+δ from x-ray diffraction to megabar pressures

Pressure is a unique tuning parameter for probing the properties of materials, and it has been particularly useful for studies of electronic materials such as high-temperature cuprate superconductors. In this work we report the effects of quasihydrostatic compression produced by a neon pressure medium on the structures of bismuth-based high-T c cuprate superconductors with the nominal composition Bi 2 Sr 2 Ca n-1 Cu n O 2n+4+δ (n=1, 2, 3) up to 155 GPa. The structures of all three compositions obtained by synchrotron x-ray diffraction can be described as pseudotetragonal over the entire pressure range studied. We show that previously reported pressure-induced distortions and structural changes arise from the large strains that can be induced in these layered materials by nonhydrostatic stresses. The pressure-volume equations of state (EOS) measured under these quasihydrostatic conditions cannot be fit to single phenomenological formulation over the pressure ranges studied, starting below 20 GPa. This intrinsic anomalous compression as well as the sensitivity of Bi 2 Sr 2 Ca n-1 Cu n O 2n+4+δ to deviatoric stresses provide explanations for the numerous inconsistencies in reported EOS parameters for these materials. We conclude that the anomalous compressional behavior of all three compositions is a manifestation of the changes in electronic properties that are also responsible for the remarkable nonmonotonic dependence of T c with pressure, including the increase in T c at the highest pressures studied so far for each. Transport and spectroscopic measurements up to megabar pressures are needed to fully characterize these cuprates and explore higher possible critical temperatures in these materials.

Single crystal growth, chemical defects, magnetic and transport properties of antiferromagnetic topological insulators ( Ge 1 – δ – x Mn x ) 2 Bi 2 Te 5 ( x ≤ 0.47 , 0.11 ≤ δ ≤ 0.20 )

Magnetic topological insulators provide a platform for emergent phenomena arising from the interplay between magnetism and band topology. Here we report the single crystal growth, crystal structure, magnetic and transport properties, as well as the neutron scattering studies of topological insulator series (Ge 1–δ–x Mn x ) 2 ⁢Bi 2 ⁢Te 5 (x ≤ 0.47, 0.11 ≤ δ ≤ 0.20). Upon doping up to x = 0.47, the lattice parameter c decreases by 0.8%, while the lattice parameter a remains nearly unchanged. Significant Ge vacancies and Ge/Bi site mixing are revealed via elemental analysis as well as refinements of the neutron and x-ray diffraction data, resulting in holes dominating the charge transport. At x = 0.47, below 10.8 K, a bilayer A-type antiferromagnetic ordered state emerges, featuring an ordered moment of 3.0(3) μ B /Mn at 5 K, with the c axis as the easy axis. Magnetization data unveils a much stronger effective interlayer antiferromagnetic exchange interaction and a much smaller uniaxial anisotropy compared to MnBi 2 ⁢Te 4 . We attribute the former to the shorter nearest-neighbor Mn-Mn interlayer superexchange path and the latter to the smaller ligand-field splitting in (Ge 1–δ–x ⁢Mn x ) 2 ⁢Bi 2 ⁢Te 5 . Finally, our study demonstrates that this series of materials holds promise for the investigation of the layer Hall effect and quantum metric nonlinear Hall effect.

Structural inversion asymmetry in epitaxial ultrathin films of Bi(111)/InSb(111)B

Bismuth (Bi) films hold potential for spintronic devices due to strong spin-orbit coupling. Understanding the growth, surface states, and interactions with the substrate is key to their functionalization. Large-area high-quality (111) Bi ultrathin films were grown on InSb (111)B substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Strong film-substrate interactions epitaxially stabilize the (111) orientation and lead to nonequivalent interface potentials. Analysis of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements, employed to characterize the evolution of the surface states with film thickness, indicate a crossing at the $\overline{M}$ point, suggesting a topologically trivial phase in the thin film. In conclusion, the results show the presence of interfacial bonds to the substrate breaks inversion symmetry, preventing the semimetal-to-semiconductor transition predicted for freestanding bismuth layers, highlighting the importance of controlled functionalization and surface passivation of two-dimensional materials.

Charge radii and electromagnetic moments of 214−218 Bi : Exploring the “southern” border of the 𝑍 > 82 octupole-deformation region

The changes in the mean-squared charge radii relative to 209 Bi 126 (𝛿⁢⟨𝑟 2 ⟩ 𝑁,126 ) and the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments in 214−218 Bi have been measured using the in-source resonance-ionization spectroscopy technique at ISOLDE (CERN). Magnetic moments of odd-odd bismuth nuclei have been analyzed by the additivity relation. Previous tentative spin-parity and configuration assignments based on the 𝛽-decay feeding patterns have been supported. A normal odd-even staggering in charge radii of bismuth isotopes with 𝑁>126 has been observed. The new data for the 𝛿⁡⟨𝑟 2 ⟩ of bismuth isotopes allow a study of the isotonic dependencies in the charge radii, revealing jumps in 𝛿⁢⟨𝑟 2 ⟩ 132,126 and 𝛿⁢⟨𝑟 2 ⟩ 134,126 at 𝑍 = 84. This pattern could be explained by a sudden onset of octupole deformation at 𝑁 = 132 and 134 when going from polonium (𝑍 = 84) to astatine (𝑍 = 85).

Advancing Dynamic Modeling of Grid-Connected PV Inverter Using Bi-LSTM-Based AI Model

Power electronic converters (PECs) are widely used in modern power systems to facilitate the interconnection between various AC or DC sources and loads. Because of the extensive integration, the power system has grown into a more dynamic system in which the dynamics of the PECs must be adequately modeled. The paper presents a new bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) method for evaluating grid-connected inverter-based resources (IBR) dynamics. The method is tested using real hardware data from a grid -connected commercial inverter in laboratory experiments. Results show the Bi-LSTM model accurately reproduces the detailed IBR model's dynamics, even when the internal structure is unknown and parameters are unknown, preventing the disclosure of the manufacturer's confidential data.

BI-LEVEL OPTIMIZATION FOR ELECTRICITY TRANSACTION IN SMART COMMUNITY WITH MODULAR PUMP HYDRO STORAGE

Grid integration of the increasing distributed energy resources could be challenging in terms of new infrastructure investment, power grid stability, etc. To resolve more renewables locally and reduce the need for extensive electricity transmission, a community energy transaction market is assumed with market operator as the leader whose responsibility is to generate local energy prices and clear the energy transaction payment among the prosumers (followers). The leader and multi-followers have competitive objectives of revenue maximization and operational cost minimization. This non-cooperative leader-follower (Stackelberg) game is formulated using a bi-level optimization framework, where a novel modular pump hydro storage technology (GLIDES system) is set as an upper level market operator, and the lower level prosumers are nearby commercial buildings. The best responses of the lower level model could be derived by necessary optimality conditions, and thus the bi-level model could be transformed into single level optimization model via replacing the lower level model by its Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) necessary conditions. Several experiments have been designed to compare the local energy transaction behavior and profit distribution with the different demand response levels and different local price structures. The experimental results indicate that the lower level prosumers could benefit the most when local buying and selling prices are equal, while maximum revenue potential for the upper level agent could be reached with non-equal trading prices.

Stiff and strong, lightweight bi-material sandwich plate-lattices with enhanced energy absorption

Plate-based lattices are predicted to reach theoretical Hashin–Shtrikman and Suquet upper bounds on stiffness and strength. However, simultaneously attaining high energy absorption in these plate-lattices still remains elusive, which is critical for many structural applications such as shock wave absorber and protective devices. In this article, we present bi-material isotropic cubic + octet sandwich plate-lattices composed of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (stiff) skins and elastomeric (soft) core. This bi-material configuration enhances their energy absorption capability while retaining stretching-dominated behavior. We investigate their mechanical properties through an analytical model and finite element simulations. Our results show that they achieve enhanced energy absorption approximately 2–2.8 times higher than their homogeneous counterparts while marginally compromising their stiffness and strength. When compared to previously reported materials, these materials achieve superior strength-energy absorption characteristics, making them an excellent candidate for stiff and strong, lightweight energy absorbing applications.

Surface Electronic Structure of Cr Doped Bi 2 Se 3 Single Crystals

Here, by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we showed that Bi 2-x Cr x Se 3 single crystals have a distinctly well-defined band structure with a large bulk band gap and undistorted topological surface states. These spectral features are unlike their thin film forms in which a large nonmagnetic gap with a distorted band structure was reported. We further provide laser-based high resolution photoemission data which reveal a Dirac point gap even in the pristine sample. The gap becomes more pronounced with Cr doping into the bulk of Bi 2 Se 3 . These observations show that the Dirac point can be modified by the magnetic impurities as well as the light source.

Predicting Electrical Conductivity in Bi-Metal Composites

Generating high magnetic fields requires materials with not only high electric conductivity but also good strength properties in order to withstand the necessarily strong Lorentz forces. A number of bi-metal composites, most notably Cu/Nb, are considered to be good candidates for this purpose. Here, we generalize our previous work on Cu/Nb in order to predict, from theory, the dependence of electric conductivity on the microstructure and volume fraction of the less conductive component for a number of other bi-metal composites. Together with information on strength properties (taken from previous literature), the conductivity information we provide in this work can help to identify new promising candidate materials (such as Cu/Nb, Cu/Ag, Cu/W, …) for magnet applications with the highest achievable field strengths.

Bi-Kappa Proton Mirror and Cyclotron Instabilities in the Solar Wind

Abstract The charged particles in the solar wind are often observed to possess a nonthermal tail in the velocity distribution function, a feature that can be fitted with the Kappa model. The anisotropic, or bi-Kappa, model of protons, electrons, and other charged particles is thus adopted in the literature for interpreting the data as well as in the context of the analysis of wave–particle interactions. The present paper develops an approximate but efficient theory of the mirror and cyclotron instabilities excited by the bi-Kappa protons in the solar wind. A velocity moment-based quasi-linear theory of these instabilities is also formulated in order to investigate the saturation behavior. Applications of the formalism are made for instabilities close to the marginally unstable state, which is typical of the solar wind near 1 au.

Bi-triaxial photoconductive switch module

Methods, systems, and devices describe bi-triaxial photoconductive switch modules that that eliminate the need for external DC blocking capacitors, while providing a highly compact structure that can produce bipolar output waveforms conducive to feeding to radio-frequency (RF) devices, such as antennas. Some implementations of the disclosed bi-triaxial photoconductive switch modules utilize unified cast-in-place capacitors that can be designed with an appropriate geometry, volume and orientation to provide desired energy storage capacity while eliminating or reducing parasitics.

Systems and methods for randomized, packet-based power management of conditionally-controlled loads and bi-directional distributed energy storage systems

The present disclosure provides a distributed and anonymous approach to demand response of an electricity system. The approach conceptualizes energy consumption and production of distributed-energy resources (DERs) via discrete energy packets that are coordinated by a cyber computing entity that grants or denies energy packet requests from the DERs. The approach leverages a condition of a DER, which is particularly useful for (1) thermostatically-controlled loads, (2) non-thermostatic conditionally-controlled loads, and (3) bi-directional distributed energy storage systems. In a first aspect of the present approach, each DER independently requests the authority to switch on for a fixed amount of time (i.e., packet duration). The coordinator determines whether to grant or deny each request based electric grid and/or energy or power market conditions. In a second aspect, bi-directional DERs, such as distributed-energy storage systems (DESSs) are further able to request to supply energy to the grid.

White Paper on High Temperature Superconducting Bi-2212 Magnets for Energy Frontier Circular Colliders

As the only high-temperature superconducting (HTS) material available as an isotropic, twisted, multifilamentary round wire, Bi-2212 is very promising for expanding the high-field superconducting accelerator magnet toolbox beyond the round-wire, isotropic Nb-Ti and Nb3Sn conductors used by HEP so far. In this paper, we describe the important roles that Bi-2212 might play for future high energy circular colliders including both high energy proton and muon colliders. We describe its present technology status (conductor development, magnet design concepts, prototype magnet status) and then provide a ten-year plan for >15 T accelerator magnets and >25 T solenoid magnets within an integrated strategy to engage industry and the entire US and international scientific enterprise interested in HTS magnet applications.

Development of scalable design optimization parameters for bi-component protective systems

Bi-component protection-systems need to withstand a variety of extreme loading conditions such as high-velocity projectile impact to shock and blast mitigation. The large number of parameters at each stage of bi-component protection system design process results in a near-infinite number of possible variables for optimization. The aim of this project is to identify the scaling laws linking material and geometric scales of the problem to the final impact performance, further including the effects of wave propagation/interaction and inter-component bonding. Specifically, the impact dynamics for different optimal projectile/target density ratios and relative component mass fractions are quantified for bonded ceramic/titanium alloy systems. The impact behavior such as wave mechanics and damage propagation within the target system is characterized and quantified via digital image correlation or via x-ray phase-contrast imaging.

Josephson behavior in a metal-decorated topological-insulator Bi 0.91 Sb 0.09

We have fabricated W nanoscale clusters on a topological insulator Bi 0.91 Sb 0.09 . The W island arrays effectively induce two-dimensional superconductivity at the surface of Bi 0.91 Sb 0.09 via the superconducting proximity effect. We find that this heterostructure behaves as a dynamic Josephson junction, which shows a Fraunhofer-like pattern of the critical current versus the applied magnetic field. Microwave irradiation experiments reveal the existence of a 4π-periodic supercurrent carried by the topological surface state. Our results open up a route to induce topological superconductivity in a topological insulator.
