Study of ${B}_c^{+}$ meson decays to charmonia plus multihadron final states

Four decay modes of the ${B}_c^{+}$ meson into a J/ψ meson and multiple charged kaons or pions are studied using proton-proton collision data, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb -1 . The decay ${B}_c^{+}$ → J/ψK + K - π + π + π - is observed for the first time, and evidence for the ${B}_c^{+}$ → J/ψ4π + 3π - decay is found. The decay ${B}_c^{+}$ → J/ψ3π + 2π - is observed and the previous observation of the ${B}_c^{+}$ → ψ(2S)π + π + π - decay is confirmed using the ψ(2S) → J/ψπ + π - decay mode. Ratios of the branching fractions of these four ${B}_c^{+}$ decay channels are measured.

Observation of the B + → Jψη'K + decay

The B + → Jψη'K + decay is observed for the first time using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb -1 . The branching fraction of this decay is measured relative to the known branching fraction of the B + → ψ (2S)K + decay and found to be $\frac{\mathcal{B}(B^+ → Jψη'K^+)}{\mathcal{B}(B^+ → ψ(2S)K^+)}$ = (4.91 ± 0.47 ± 0.29 ± 0.07) X 10 -2 , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is related to external branching fractions. A first look at the J/ψη' mass distribution is performed and no signal of intermediate resonances is observed.

Measurements of jet observables sensitive to $\textit{b}$-quark fragmentation in $t\bar{t}$ events at the LHC with the ATLAS detector

Several observables sensitive to the fragmentation of $\textit{b}$ quarks into $\textit{b}$ hadrons are measured using 36 fb -1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Jets containing b hadrons are obtained from a sample of dileptonic $t\bar{t}$ events, and the associated set of charged-particle tracks is separated into those from the primary $\textit{pp}$ interaction vertex and those from the displaced b-decay secondary vertex. This division is used to construct observables that characterize the longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions of the $\textit{b}$ hadron within the jet. The measurements have been corrected for detector effects and provide a test of heavy-quark-fragmentation modeling at the LHC in a system where the top-quark decay products are color connected to the proton beam remnants. The unfolded distributions are compared with the predictions of several modern Monte Carlo parton-shower generators and generator tunes, and a wide range of agreement with the data is observed, with $\textit{p}$ values varying from 5 × 10 -4 to 0.98. These measurements complement similar measurements from $e^+e^-$ collider experiments in which the $\textit{b}$ quarks originate from a color singlet $Z/γ^{\ast}$.

Configuration, Performance, and Commissioning of the ATLAS b-jet Triggers for the 2022 and 2023 LHC data-taking periods

In 2022 and 2023, the Large Hadron Collider produced approximately two billion hadronic interactions each second from bunches of protons that collide at a rate of 40 MHz. The ATLAS trigger system is used to reduce this rate to a few kHz for recording. Selections based on hadronic jets, their energy, and event topology reduce the rate to 𝒪(10) kHz while maintaining high efficiencies for important signatures resulting in b-quarks, but to reach the desired recording rate of hundreds of Hz, additional real-time selections based on the identification of jets containing b-hadrons (b-jets) are employed to achieve low thresholds on the jet transverse momentum at the High-Level Trigger. The configuration, commissioning, and performance of the real-time ATLAS b-jet identification algorithms for the early LHC Run 3 collision data are presented. These recent developments provide substantial gains in signal efficiency for critical signatures; for the Standard Model production of Higgs boson pairs, a 50% improvement in selection efficiency is observed in final states with four b-quarks or two b-quarks and two hadronically decaying τ-leptons.

Improved Measurement of C P Violation Parameters in B s 0 → J / ψ K + K − Decays in the Vicinity of the ϕ ( 1020 ) Resonance

The decay-time-dependent C P asymmetry in B s 0 → J / ψ ( → μ + μ − ) K + K − decays is measured using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb − 1 , collected with the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Using a sample of approximately 349 000 B s 0 signal decays with an invariant K + K − mass in the vicinity of the ϕ ( 1020 ) resonance, the C P -violating phase ϕ s is measured, along with the difference in decay widths of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B s 0 − B ¯ s 0 system, Δ Γ s , and the difference of the average B s 0 and B 0 meson decay widths, Γ s − Γ d . The values obtained are ϕ s = − 0.039 ± 0.022 ± 0.006 rad , Δ Γ s = 0.0845 ± 0.0044 ± 0.0024 ps − 1 , and Γ s − Γ d = − 0.005 6 − 0.0015 + 0.0013 ± 0.0014 ps − 1 , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements to date and are consistent with expectations based on the Standard Model and with the previous LHCb analyses of this decay. These results are combined with previous independent LHCb measurements. The phase ϕ s is also measured independently for each polarization state of the K + K − system and shows no evidence for polarization dependence. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Phase stability and coercivity in La 2 Fe 14 B magnet

Critical rare-earth free La 2 Fe 14 B (2:14:1) has the potential to be a gap permanent magnet. However, La 2 Fe 14 B decomposes into La, α-Fe, and La 4 Fe 4 phases below 1067 K. The phase stability and coercivity have been studied in La 2 Fe 14 B magnet using first principles DFT (density functional theory) calculation and micromagnetic simulation. For a perfect La 2 Fe 14 B cube (edge length of 256 nm) without any structural defects and soft magnetic secondary phases, the coercivity (8.5 kOe) is reduced to ~40% of its magnetocrystalline anisotropy field ( H A = 20 kOe). Further, the coercivity sharply reduces to 3.2 kOe upon forming a thin layer (2 nm) of α-Fe on the surface of the La 2 Fe 14 B cube particle. The DFT calculations indicate that a partial replacement of La by other rare-earth (RE) elements can enhance the structural stability of 2:14:1. The gains in cohesive energy are 0.75, 0.10, and 0.33 eV per formula unit in (La 0.5 RE 0.5 ) 2 Fe 14 B with RE = Ce, Pr, and Nd, respectively. Stabilizing the 2:14:1 structure and mitigating the formation of soft magnetic structural defects or impurity phases such as α-Fe is necessary to develop La 2 Fe 14 B based magnet, which can be moderately achieved via partial substitution of La by other rare earth elements such as Ce, Pr, and Nd.

Crystal structures of ‘ALternative Isoinformational ENgineered’ DNA in B-form

The first structural model of duplex DNA reported in 1953 by Watson & Crick presented the double helix in B-form, the form that genomic DNA exists in much of the time. Thus, artificial DNA seeking to mimic the properties of natural DNA should also be able to adopt B-form. Using a host–guest system in which Moloney murine leukemia virus reverse transcriptase serves as the host and DNA as the guests, we determined high-resolution crystal structures of three complexes including 5'-CTTBPPBBSSZZSAAG, 5'-CTTSSPBZPSZBBAAG and 5'-CTTZZPBSBSZPPAAG with 10 consecutive unnatural nucleobase pairs in B-form within self-complementary 16 bp duplex oligonucleotides. We refer to this ALternative Isoinformational ENgineered (ALIEN) genetic system containing two nucleobase pairs (P:Z, pairing 2-amino-imidazo-[1,2-a]-1,3,5-triazin-(8H)-4-one with 6-amino-5-nitro-(1H)-pyridin-2-one, and B:S, 6-amino-4-hydroxy-5-(1H)-purin-2-one with 3-methyl-6-amino-pyrimidin-2-one) as ALIEN DNA. We characterized both position- and sequence-specific helical, nucleobase pair and dinucleotide step parameters of P:Z and B:S pairs in the context of B-form DNA. We conclude that ALIEN DNA exhibits structural features that vary with sequence. Further, Z can participate in alternative stacking modes within a similar sequence context as captured in two different structures. This finding suggests that ALIEN DNA may have a larger repertoire of B-form structures than natural DNA.

Site Occupancy Preference and Magnetic Properties in Nd 2 (Fe,Co) 14 B

Partial replacement of Fe by Co is an effective method to increase Curie temperature (T C ) , which improves the thermal stability of magnetic properties in Nd 2 Fe 14 B-based permanent magnets. The correlation between Fe substitution and magnetic properties has been studied in Nd 2 (Fe,Co) 14 B via a first-principles calculation. The calculated Fe substitution energies indicate that the Co atoms avoid the 8 j 2 site, which agrees with the experiments. The Co atoms are ferromagnetically coupled with Fe sublattice and show magnetic moments of about 1.2 to 1.7 μ B at different crystallographic sites, less than that of Fe (2.1–2.7 μ B ), resulting in the decrease in total magnetization at ground state (0 K) with increasing Co content. The effective exchange interaction parameter, derived from the energy difference between varied magnetic structures, increases from 7.8 meV to 17.0 meV with increasing Co content from x = 0 to x = 14 in Nd 2 Fe 14–x Co x B. This change in the effective exchange interaction parameter is responsible for the enhancement of T C in Nd 2 (Fe,Co) 14 B. The total magnetization at 300 K, derived from mean-field theory, shows a peak maximum value at x = 1 in Nd 2 Fe 14–x Co x B. The phenomenon results from the interplay between the reduction of the magnetic moment in the Fe(Co) sublattice and the enhancement of T C with increasing Co content.

Acclimation and Compensating Metabolite Responses to UV-B Radiation in Natural and Transgenic Populus spp. Defective in Lignin Biosynthesis

Plants have evolved to protect leaf mesophyll tissue from damage caused by UV-B radiation by producing an array of UV-absorbing secondary metabolites. Flavonoids (phenolic glycosides) and sinapate esters (hydroxycinnamates) have been implicated as UV-B protective compounds because of the accumulation in the leaf epidermis and the strong absorption in the wavelengths corresponding to UV. Environmental adaptations by plants also generate a suite of responses for protection against damage caused by UV-B radiation, with plants from high elevations or low latitudes generally displaying greater adaptation or tolerance to UV-B radiation. In an effort to explore the relationships between plant lignin levels and composition, the origin of growth elevation, and the hierarchical synthesis of UV-screening compounds, a collection of natural variants as well as transgenic Populus spp. were examined for sensitivity or acclimation to UV-B radiation under greenhouse and laboratory conditions. Noninvasive, ecophysiological measurements using epidermal transmittance and chlorophyll fluorescence as well as metabolite measurements using UPLC-MS generally revealed that the synthesis of anthocyanins, flavonoids, and lignin precursors are increased in Populus upon moderate to high UV-B treatment. However, poplar plants with genetic modifications that affect lignin biosynthesis, or natural variants with altered lignin levels and compositions, displayed complex changes in phenylpropanoid metabolites. A balance between elevated metabolic precursors to protective phenylpropanoids and increased biosynthesis of these anthocyanins, flavonoids, and lignin is proposed to play a role in the acclimation of Populus to UV-B radiation and may provide a useful tool in engineering plants as improved bioenergy feedstocks.

Search for new particles in an extended Higgs sector with four b quarks in the final state at $\sqrt{s}$ = $\mathrm{13 TeV}$

A search for a massive resonance X decaying to a pair of spin-0 bosons φ that themselves decay to pairs of bottom quarks, is presented. The analysis is restricted to the mass ranges m φ from 25 to 100 GeV and m x from 1 to 3 TeV. For these mass ranges, the decay products of each φ boson are expected to merge into a single large-radius jet. Jet substructure and flavor identification techniques are used to identify these jets. The search is based on CERN LHC proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 Model-specific limits, where the two new particles arise from an extended Higgs sector, are set on the product of the production cross section and branching fraction for X → φφ → ($b\bar{b}$)($b\bar{b}$) as a function of the resonances' masses, where both the X → φφ → and φ → $b\bar{b}$ branching fractions are assumed to be 100%. These limits are the first of their kind on this process, ranging between 30 and 1fb at 95% confidence level for the considered mass ranges.

Test of Light-Lepton Universality in the Rates of Inclusive Semileptonic B-Meson Decays at Belle II

We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions of inclusive semileptonic B -meson decays, R ( X e / μ ) = B ( B → X e ν ) / B ( B → X μ ν ) , a precision test of electron-muon universality, using data corresponding to 189 fb - 1 from electron-positron collisions collected with the Belle II detector. In events where the partner B meson is fully reconstructed, we use fits to the lepton momentum spectra above 1.3 GeV / c to obtain R ( X e / μ ) = 1.007 ± 0.009 ( stat ) ± 0.019 ( syst ) , which is the most precise lepton-universality test of its kind and agrees with the standard-model expectation.

First Simultaneous Determination of Inclusive and Exclusive | V u b |

The first simultaneous determination of the absolute value of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element V ub using inclusive and exclusive decays is performed with the full Belle data set at the $Υ$(4S) resonance, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711 fb -1 . We analyze collision events in which one B meson is fully reconstructed in hadronic modes. This allows for the reconstruction of the hadronic X u system of the semileptonic b → $πℓe_ℓ$ decay. We separate exclusive B → $πℓ\overline{ν}_ℓ$ decays from other inclusive B → $X_uℓ\overline{ν}_ℓ$ and backgrounds with a two-dimensional fit that utilizes the number of charged pions in the X u system and the four-momentum transfer q 2 between the B and X u systems. Combining our measurement with information from lattice QCD and QCD calculations of the inclusive partial rate as well as external experimental information on the shape of the B → $πℓe_ℓ$ form factor, we determine |$V^{excl}_{ub}$| = (3.78 ± 0.23 ± 0.16 ± 0.14) × 10 -3 and |$V^{incl}_{ub}$| = (3.88 ± 0.20 ± 0.31 ± 0.09) x 10 -3 , respectively, with the uncertainties being the statistical error, systematic errors, and theory errors. The ratio of |$V^{excl}_{ub}$|/|$V^{incl}_{ub}$| 0.97 ± 0.12 is compatible with unity.

First Measurement of R ( X τ / ℓ ) as an Inclusive Test of the b → c τ ν Anomaly

We measure the tau-to-light-lepton ratio of inclusive B -meson branching fractions R ( X τ / ℓ ) ≡ B ( B → X τ ν ) / B ( B → X ℓ ν ) , where ℓ indicates an electron or muon, and thereby test the universality of charged-current weak interactions. We select events that have one fully reconstructed B meson and a charged lepton candidate from 189 fb − 1 of electron-positron collision data collected with the Belle II detector. We find R ( X τ / ℓ ) = 0.228 ± 0.016 ( stat ) ± 0.036 ( syst ) , in agreement with standard-model expectations. This is the first direct measurement of R ( X τ / ℓ ) . Energy-peak based method to measure top quark mass via B -hadron decay lengths

We develop a method for the determination of the top quark mass using the distribution of the decay length of the B -hadrons originating from its decay. This technique is based on our earlier observation regarding the location of the peak of the b quark energy distribution. Such “energy-peak” methods enjoy a greater degree of model-independence with respect to the kinematics of top quark production compared to earlier proposals. The CMS experiment has implemented the energy-peak method using associated b -jet energy as an approximation for b quark energy. The new method uses B -hadron decay lengths, which are related to b quark energies by convolution. The advantage of the new decay length method is that it can be applied in a way that evades jet-energy scale (JES) uncertainties. Indeed, CMS has measured the top quark mass using B -hadron decay lengths, but they did not incorporate the energy-peak method. Therefore, mismodeling of top quark transverse momentum remains a large uncertainty in their result. We demonstrate that, using energy-peak methods, this systematic uncertainty can become negligible. We show that with the current LHC data set, a sub-GeV statistical uncertainty on the top quark mass can be attained with this method. To achieve a comparable systematic uncertainty as is true for many methods based on exclusive or semi-inclusive observables using hadrons, we find that the quark-hadron transition needs to be described significantly better than is the case with current fragmentation functions and hadronization models.

α Irradiation Response on the Electronic Transport Properties of p -B 12 P 2

B 12 P 2 , a wide bandgap semiconductor, has been previously reported to self-heal from high-energy electron bombardment as determined from transmission electron microscopy. However, the effect of irradiation on the electronic transport properties of B 12 P 2 has not been studied. We report electrical transport measurements on B 12 P 2 after α irradiation. The temperature-dependent Hall effect was measured on p-type B 12 P 2 after successive α irradiation from 210 Po over a fluence range of 1 × 10 11 –1 × 10 13 α/cm 2 to test for self-healing of B 12 P 2 to α bombardment. Prior to irradiation, B 12 P 2 displayed electrical transport characteristics of both hopping and impurity/defect band conduction due to background impurities and growth-induced defects. Fluences of 5 × 10 12 α/cm 2 or greater caused a decrease in the hole mobility and an increase in defect band conduction, suggesting defect accumulation in B 12 P 2 .

Solid-state reaction mediated microstructural evolution in a spark plasma sintered in situ Ti–B 4 C composite

For this study, a novel porosity-free in situ Ti–B 4 C composite was fabricated via spark plasma sintering (SPS). Detailed analysis of the phase evolution, coupling results from XRM, XRD and SEM-EBSD-EDS, indicate that primarily TiB 2 precipitates formed due to the in-situ reactions between the boron-carbide and titanium powders. The precipitation of TiB 2 resulted in the formation of a graphitic C-rich thin layer circumscribing the partially reacted B 4 C particles. Further progression of the in-situ reaction leads to the out-diffusion of the excess carbon from the B 4 C particles, across the graphite and TiB 2 phases, forming TiC upon reacting with the titanium matrix. Therefore, the final microstructure primarily consisted of TiB 2 , TiC, and partially reacted B 4 C phases, with small amounts of TiB, α-Ti, and graphite. Furthermore, the microstructure in these SPS processed in situ composites appeared to be the product of a solid-state Ti–B 4 C diffusion couple, substantially different from their fusion-based additively manufactured counterparts. Nano-indentation tests revealed a remarkably high average hardness of ~25 GPa for this SPS-processed Ti–B 4 C composite and comparable (with literature) phase-specific hardness and modulus values for the constituent TiB 2 , TiC, and B 4 C phases.

Gaseous cyclodextrin- closo -dodecaborate complexes χCD·B 12 X 12 2– (χ = α, β, and γ; X = F, Cl, Br, and I): electronic structures and intramolecular interactions

A fundamental understanding of cyclodextrin- closo -dodecaborate inclusion complexes is of great interest in supramolecular chemistry. Herein, we report a systematic investigation on the electronic structures and intramolecular interactions of perhalogenated closo -dodecaborate dianions B 12 X 12 2– (X = F, Cl, Br and I) binding to α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrins (CDs) in the gas phase using combined negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy (NIPES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The vertical detachment energy (VDE) of each complex and electronic stabilization of each dianion due to the CD binding (ΔVDE, relative to the corresponding isolated B 12 X 12 2– ) are determined from the experiments along α-, β- and γ-CD in the form of VDE (ΔVDE): 4.00 (2.10), 4.33 (2.43), and 4.30 (2.40) eV in X = F; 4.09 (1.14), 4.64 (1.69), and 4.69 (1.74) eV in X = Cl; 4.11 (0.91), 4.58 (1.38), and 4.70 (1.50) eV in X = Br; and 3.54 (0.74), 3.88 (1.08), and 4.05 (1.25) eV in X = I, respectively. All complexes have significantly higher VDEs than the corresponding isolated dodecaborate dianions with ΔVDE spanning from 0.74 eV at (α, I) to 2.43 eV at (β, F), sensitive to both host CD size and guest substituent X. DFT-optimized complex structures indicate that all B 12 X 12 2– prefer binding to the wide openings of CDs with the insertion depth and binding motif strongly dependent on the CD size and halogen X. Dodecaborate anions with heavy halogens, i.e. , X = Cl, Br, and I, are found outside of α-CD, while B 12 F 12 2– is completely wrapped by γ-CD. Partial embedment of B 12 X 12 2– into CDs is observed for the other complexes via multipronged B–X … H–O/C interlocking patterns. The simulated spectra based on the density of states agree well with those of the experiments and the calculated VDEs well reproduce the experimental trends. Molecular orbital analyses suggest that the spectral features at low binding energies originated from electrons detached from the dodecaborate dianion, while those at higher binding energies are derived from electron detachment from CDs. Energy decomposition analyses reveal that the electrostatic interaction plays a dominating role in contributing to the host–guest interactions for the X = F series partially due to the formation of a O/C–H … X–B hydrogen bonding network, and the dispersion forces gradually become important with the increase of halogen size.

Templated epitaxy of TiO 2 (B) on a perovskite

The bronze-phase TiO 2 (B) has an open atomic framework that makes it a good candidate for applications in photochemical and electrochemical conversion of energy. However, the synthesis of bronze-phase TiO 2 (B) thin films on perovskite substrates, such as SrTiO 3 (STO), which is one of the most conventional versatile substrates for oxide epitaxy, has been extremely challenging owing to the preferential formation of the anatase TiO 2 over TiO 2 (B). The main reason is that the anatase TiO 2 has not only a smaller lattice mismatch than TiO 2 (B), but also a better structural symmetry match when grown on STO. Here, we demonstrate a way to circumventing this problem by using a VO 2 (B) buffer layer, yielding the growth of a high-quality single crystalline TiO 2 (B) film on a (001)-oriented STO substrate. Finally, from the resulting TiO 2 (B) film, we found that this film has a large optical bandgap of ~3.6 eV, which is close to the known theoretical value, the largest among TiO 2 polymorphs, and useful for developing high-power energy devices.
