Parity-odd and even trispectrum from axion inflation

The four-point correlation function of primordial scalar perturbations has parity-even and parity-odd contributions and the parity-odd signal in cosmological observations is opening a novel window to look for new physics in the inflationary epoch. We study the distinct parity-odd and even prediction from the axion inflation model, in which the inflaton couples to a vector field via a Chern-Simons interaction, and the vector field is considered to be either approximately massless (m A << Hubble scale H) or very massive (m A ~ H). The parity-odd signal arises due to one transverse mode of the vector field being predominantly produced during inflation. We adopt the in-in formalism to evaluate the correlation functions. Considering the vector field mode function to be dominated by its real part up to a constant phase, we simplify the formulas for numerical computations. The numerical studies show that the massive and massless vector fields give significant parity-even signals, while the parity-odd contribution is about one to two orders of magnitude smaller.

Cosmological structure formation and soliton phase transition in fuzzy dark matter with axion self-interactions

Herein we investigate cosmological structure formation in fuzzy dark matter (FDM) with the attractive self-interaction (SI) with numerical simulations. Such a SI would arise if the FDM boson were an ultra-light axion, which has a strong CP symmetry-breaking scale (decay constant). Although weak, the attractive SI may be strong enough to counteract the quantum ‘pressure’ and alter structure formation. We find in our simulations that the SI can enhance small-scale structure formation, and soliton cores above a critical mass undergo a phase transition, transforming from dilute to dense solitons.

SPT-3G D1: Axion early dark energy with CMB experiments and DESI observations

We present the most up-to-date constraints on axion early dark energy (AEDE) from cosmic microwave background (CMB) and baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements. In particular, we assess the impact of data from ground-based CMB experiments, the South Pole Telescope (SPT) and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT)—both with and without Planck—on constraints on AEDE. We also highlight the impact that BAO information from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) has on these constraints. From CMB data alone, we do not find statistically significant evidence for the presence of AEDE, and we find only moderate reduction in the Hubble tension. From the latest SPT data alone, we find the maximal fractional contribution of AEDE to the cosmic energy budget is f EDE < 0.12 at 95% confidence level (CL), and the Hubble tension between the SPT and Supernovae, H0, for the Equation of State of Dark Energy (SH0ES) results is reduced to the 2.3 σ level. When combining the latest SPT, ACT, and Planck datasets, we find f EDE < 0.070 at 95% CL and the Hubble tension at the 3.6 σ level. In contrast, adding DESI data to the CMB datasets results in mild preference for AEDE and, in some cases, non-negligible reduction in the Hubble tension. From SPT + DESI , we find f EDE = 0.08 1 - 0.052 + 0.037 at 68% CL, and the Hubble tension reduces to 1.5 σ . From the combination of DESI with all three CMB experiments, we get f EDE = 0.05 5 - 0.047 + 0.024 at 68% CL and a weak preference for AEDE over Λ CDM . This data combination, in turn, reduces the Hubble tension to 2.6 σ . We highlight that this shift in parameters when adding the DESI dataset is a manifestation of the discrepancy currently present between DESI and CMB experiments in the concordance model Λ CDM .

Magnetism in the axion insulator candidate Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6

Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 is a member of a family of orthorhombic nonsymmorphic rare-earth intermetallics that combines large localized magnetic moments and itinerant exchange with a low carrier density and perpendicular glide planes. This may result in special topological crystalline (wallpaper fermion) or axion insulating phases. Recent studies of Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 single crystals have revealed colossal negative magnetoresistance and multiple magnetic phase transitions. Here, we clarify this ordering process using neutron scattering, resonant elastic x-ray scattering, muon spin-rotation, and magnetometry. The nonsymmorphic and multisite character of Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 results in coplanar noncollinear magnetic structures with an Ising-like net magnetization along the a axis. A reordering transition, attributable to competing ferro- and antiferromagnetic couplings, manifests as the onset of a second commensurate Fourier component. In the absence of spatially resolved probes, the experimental evidence for this low-temperature state can be interpreted either as an unusual double- q structure or in a phase separation scenario. The net magnetization produces variable anisotropic hysteretic effects which also couple to charge transport. The implied potential for functional domain physics and topological transport suggests that this structural family may be a promising platform to implement concepts of topological antiferromagnetic spintronics. Imprints of the early Universe on axion dark matter substructure

Despite considerable experimental progress large parts of the axionlike particle (ALP) parameter space remain difficult to probe in terrestrial experiments. In some cases, however, small-scale structure of the ALP dark matter (DM) distribution is strongly enhanced, offering opportunities for astrophysical tests. Such an enhancement can be produced by a period of prenucleosynthesis early matter domination (EMD). This cosmology arises in many ultraviolet completions and generates the correct relic abundance for weak coupling f a ~ 10 16 GeV , ALP masses in the range 10 - 13 eV < m a < 1 eV , and without fine-tuning of the initial misalignment angle. This range includes the QCD axion around 10 - 9 - 10 - 8 eV . EMD enhances the growth of ALP small-scale structure, leading to the formation of dense ALP miniclusters which can contain nearly all of DM (depending on ALP mass and reheating temperature). We study the interplay between the initial ALP oscillation, reheating temperature, and effective pressure to provide analytic estimates of the minicluster abundance and properties. ALP miniclusters in the EMD cosmology are denser and more abundant than in Λ CDM . While enhanced substructure generically reduces the prospects of direct detection experiments, we show that pulsar timing and lensing observations can discover these minihalos over a large range of ALP masses and reheating temperatures.

Early structure formation constraints on the ultralight axion in the postinflation scenario

Many works have concentrated on the observable signatures of the dark matter being an ultralight axion-like particle (ALP). We concentrate on a particularly dramatic signature in the late-time cosmological matter power spectrum that occurs if the symmetry breaking that establishes the ALP happens after inflation -- white-noise density fluctuations that dominate at small scales over the adiabatic fluctuations from inflation. Here, these fluctuations alter the early history of nonlinear structure formation. We find that for symmetry breaking scales of f A ~ 10 13 – 10 15 GeV, which requires a high effective maximum temperature after inflation, ALP dark matter with particle mass of m A ~ 10 –13 – 10 –20 eV could significantly change the number of high-redshift dwarf galaxies, the reionization history, and the Lyα forest. We consider all three observables. We find that the Lyα forest is the most constraining of current observables, excluding f A ≳ 10 15 GeV (m A ≲ 10 –17 eV) in the simplest model for the ALP and considerably lower values in models coupled to a hidden strongly interacting sector (f A ≳ 10 13 GeV and m A ≲ 10 –13 eV). Observations that constrain the extremely high-redshift tail of reionization may disfavor similar levels of isocurvature fluctuations as the forest. Future z ~ 20–30 21cm observations have the potential to improve these constraints further using that the supersonic motions of the isocurvature-enhanced abundance of ~10 4 M ⊙ halos would shock heat the baryons, sourcing large BAO features.

Tidal disruption of solitons in self-interacting ultralight axion dark matter

We report ultralight axions (ULAs) are promising dark matter candidates that can have a distinct impact on the formation and evolution of structure on nonlinear scales relative to the cold, collisionless dark matter (CDM) paradigm. However, most studies of structure formation in ULA models do not include the effects of self-interactions, which are expected to arise generically. Here, we study how the tidal evolution of solitons is affected by ULA self-interaction strength and sign. Specifically, using the pseudospectral solver UltraDark.jl, we simulate the tidal disruption of self-interacting solitonic cores as they orbit a 10 11 M ⊙ Navarro-Frenk-White CDM host halo potential for a range of orbital parameters, assuming a fiducial ULA particle mass of 10 -22 eV . We find that repulsive (attractive) self-interactions significantly accelerate (decelerate) soliton tidal disruption. We also identify a degeneracy between the self-interaction strength and soliton mass that determines the efficiency of tidal disruption, such that disruption timescales are affected at the ~ 50 % level for variations in the dimensionless ULA self-coupling from λ = -10 -92 to λ = 10 -92 .

Fermion mass, axion dark matter, and leptogenesis in SO(10) GUT

SO(10) grand unified theory with minimum parameters in the Yukawa sector employs the Peccei-Quinn symmetry that solves the strong C P problem. Such an economical Yukawa sector is highly appealing and has been extensively studied in the literature. However, when the running of the renormalization group equations of the Yukawa couplings are considered, this scenario shows some tension with the observed fermion masses and mixing. In this work, we propose an extension of the minimal framework that utilizes lower dimensional representations and alleviates this tension by introducing only a few new parameters. The proposed model consists of a fermion in the fundamental and a scalar in the spinorial representations. While the latter is needed to implement the Peccei-Quinn symmetry successfully, the presence of both is essential in obtaining an excellent fit to the fermion mass spectrum. In our model, axions serve the role of dark matter, and the out-of-equilibrium decays of the right-handed neutrinos successfully generate the matter-antimatter symmetry of the Universe. QCD axion: Some like it hot

We compare the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) axion phase-space distribution from unitarized next-to-leading order chiral perturbation theory with the one extracted from pion-scattering data. We derive a robust bound by confronting momentum-dependent Boltzmann equations against up-to-date observations of the cosmic microwave background, of the baryonic acoustic oscillations and of primordial abundances. These datasets imply 𝑚 𝑎 ≤ 0.16 eV for the 95% credible interval, i.e., ∼ 30% stronger bound than what previously found. We present forecasts using dedicated likelihoods for future cosmological surveys and the sphaleron rate from unquenched lattice QCD.

Constraining Axion Inflation with Gravitational Waves across 29 Decades in Frequency

We demonstrate that gravitational waves generated by efficient gauge preheating after axion inflation generically contribute significantly to the effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom $N_{\text{eff}}$. In this work we show that, with existing Planck limits, gravitational waves from preheating already place the strongest constraints on the inflaton’s possible axial coupling to Abelian gauge fields. We demonstrate that gauge preheating can completely reheat the Universe regardless of the inflationary potential. Further, we quantify the variation of the efficiency of gravitational wave production from model to model and show that it is correlated with the tensor-to-scalar ratio. In particular, when combined with constraints on models whose tensor-to-scalar ratios would be detected by next-generation cosmic microwave background experiments, $\textit{r}$ ≳ 10 –3 , constraints from $N_{\text{eff}}$ will probe or rule out the entire coupling regime for which gauge preheating is efficient.

Gapless Criterion for Crystals from Effective Axion Field

Gapless criteria that can efficiently determine whether a crystal is gapless or not are particularly useful for identifying topological semimetals. In this work, we propose a sufficient gapless criterion for three-dimensional noninteracting crystals, based on the simplified expressions for the bulk average value of the static axion field. The brief logic is that two different simplified expressions give the same value in an insulator, and thus the gapless phase can be detected by the mismatch of them. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the gapless criterion in the magnetic systems with space groups 26 and 13, where mirror, glide, and inversion symmetries provide the simplified expressions. In particular, the gapless criterion can identify gapless phases that are missed by the symmetry-representation approach, as illustrated by space group 26. Our proposal serves as a guiding principle for future discovery of topological semimetals.

Separate Surface and Bulk Topological Anderson Localization Transitions in Disordered Axion Insulators

In topological phases of matter for which the bulk and boundary support distinct electronic gaps, there exists the possibility of decoupled mobility gaps in the presence of disorder. This is in analogy with the well-studied problem of realizing separate or concomitant bulk-boundary criticality in conventional Landau theory. Using a three-dimensional axion insulator having clean, gapped surfaces with 𝑒 2 /2⁢ℎ quantized Hall conductance, we show that the bulk and surface mobility gap evolve differently in the presence of disorder. The decoupling of the bulk and surface topology yields a regime that realizes a two-dimensional, unquantized anomalous Hall metal in the Gaussian unitary ensemble on each surface, which shares some spectral and response properties akin to the surface states of a conventional 3D topological insulator. The generality of these results, as well as extensions to other insulators and superconductors, is discussed.

Looking at the axionic dark sector with ANITA

The ANITA experiment has recently observed two anomalous events emerging from well below the horizon. Even though they are consistent with tau cascades, a high energy Standard Model or Beyond the Standard Model explanation is challenging and in tension with other experiments. We study under which conditions the reflection of generic radio pulses can reproduce these signals. We propose that these pulses can be resonantly produced in the ionosphere via axion-photon conversion. This naturally explains the direction and polarization of the events and avoids other experimental bounds.

Axions: From magnetars and neutron star mergers to beam dumps and BECs

We review topics in searches for axion-like-particles (ALPs), covering material that is complementary to other recent reviews. The first half of our review covers ALPs in the extreme environments of neutron star cores, the magnetospheres of highly magnetized neutron stars (magnetars), and in neutron star mergers. The focus is on possible signals of ALPs in the photon spectrum of neutron stars and gravitational wave/electromagnetic signals from neutron star mergers. We then review recent developments in laboratory-produced ALP searches, focusing mainly on accelerator-based facilities including beam-dump type experiments and collider experiments. We provide a general-purpose discussion of the ALP search pipeline from production to detection, in steps, and our discussion is straightforwardly applicable to most beam-dump type and reactor experiments. We end with a selective look at the rapidly developing field of ultralight dark matter, specifically the formation of Bose–Einstein Condensates (BECs). We review the properties of BECs of ultralight dark matter and bridge these properties with developments in numerical simulations, and ultimately with their impact on experimental searches.

3D Printing Prototypes for a Reflector-Based Broadband Axion Search

This work sought to begin research and development on a horn antenna which can be used to transfer the energy of microwave photons produced by axions in a strong magnetic field to a coaxial cable for measurement. 3D prototypes of pyramidal horn antennas and a parabolic reflector were printed and then coated with conductive spray paint. The S 11 parameter was measured and simulated for both 3D printed horn antenna and the conical horn antenna both with and without the reflector present to determine how much of the radiated power was reflected back. Ultimately, for both the conical and pyramidal antennas, less than one percent of the energy emitted by the antennas was reflected back. When the pyramidal antenna was tilted by about 45 degrees, however, around 30-40 percent of the microwaves emitted by the antennas was reflected back.

Searching for Axion-like Particles at DarkQuest

Axion-like particles (ALPs) interacting with photons can be abundantly produced in proton xed target experiments. Once produced, they can travel a macroscopic distance before decaying into photons. We study the sensitivity of the proposed DarkQuest experiment at Fermilab to this signature. We show that the proposed upgrade to install an electromagnetic calorimeter will enable DarkQuest to explore untested parameter space by searching for the displaced decays of ALPs.
