Corrections regarding the Lellouch et al. (1989) analysis of Mars atmospheric C-12O and C-13O spectra

Lellouch et al. (1989) obtained atmospheric CO mixing ratios from Martian C-12O and C-13O microwave spectra that were 3-5 times greater than the Kaplan et al. (1969) IR measurememts; they also inferred a factor-of-2 increase in atmospheric CO abundance between September, 1986 and January, 1987. A reanalysis has been conducted of the Lellouch material, and more detailed treatment of the radiative transfer analysis indicates that its observations are consistent with the Kaplan CO volume mixing ratio determination. It is also ascertained that the Lellouch atmospheric temperature profiles are in error, with no evidence being found for the extreme temperature inversions inferred for the lowest 5 km of the Martian atmosphere.

Low Be-10 and Al-26 contents of ureilites - Production at meteoroid surfaces

The Be-10 contents of 22 ureilites and the Al-26 contents of 18 ureilites are reported. When corrected for exposure age, where known, and for composition, the results give production rate, P that are on average 20 percent lower than values typical of other meteorite classes. This depression of production rates, the weak correlations of both P26 and P10 with Ne-22/Ne-21 and the generally high He-3/Ne-21 and Ne-22/Ne-21 ratios in urelities all suggest that many of the samples occupied near-surface locations in their parent meteoroids. A reduced flux of cosmic rays does not by itself explain the elevated Ne-22/Ne-21 ratios and appears inconsistent with a proposed source for ureilites in the inner asteroid belt. Cosmogenic radionuclide data do not support the tentative pairing of ALHA 78019 with ALHa 78262 proposed on the basis of mineralogical similarities. The high Al-26 content of LEW 85440 may be the result of irradiation by solar cosmic rays.

The long-period binary AL Velorum - The atmospheric eclipse of a bright K0 giant

The properties of the AL Vel binary system, a Zeta Aur system containing a B dwarf and a bright K0 giant, are reviewed with reference to IUE observations of its atmospheric eclipse and eclipse of the accretion disk around the B-dwarf component. It is found that the conditions in the chromosphere are rather similar to those in the Zeta Aur supergiants, once allowance is made for the different sizes and scale heights involved. The conditions for Mg II suppression in the wind through ionization by the B star is discussed, and it is found that radiative excitation and subsequent ionization will suffice for the conditions encountered in the AL Vel system.

Superplastic formability of Al-Cu-Li alloy Weldalite (TM) 049

Extensive research during the past decade shows that several aluminum lithium alloys can be processed to attain a microstructure that enables superplasticity. The high tensile stress of Al-Cu-Li alloy Weldalite (TM) 049 in the T4 and T6 tempers offers tremendous potential for attaining exceptional post-SPF (superplastic formability) properties. The used SPF material is Weldalite, which was shown to induce SPF behavior in other Al-Cu-Li alloys. The superplastic behavior and resulting post-SPF mechanical properties of this alloy, which was designed to be the next major structural alloy for space applications, were evaluated. The results indicate that Weldalite alloy does indeed exhibit excellent superplasticity over a wide range of temperatures and strain rates and excellent post-SPF tensile strength at various potential service temperatures.

The mechanisms of dispersion strengthening and fracture in Al-based XD(tm) alloys, part 1

The influence of reinforcement size, volume fraction, and matrix deformation behavior on room and elevated temperature strength; the fracture toughness; and the fatigue crack growth rate of metal matrix composites of Al-4(pct)Cu-1.5(pct)Mg with TiB2 were examined. The influence of reinforcement volume fraction was also examined for pure aluminum with TiB2. Higher TiB2 volume fractions increased the tensile yield strength at both room and elevated temperatures, and reduced the elongation to fracture. Tensile tests also indicate that small particles provided a greater increase in strength for a given volume fraction than larger particles, whereas elongation to fracture appeared to be insensitive to reinforcement size. Interparticle spacing appears to be the factor that controls the strength of these alloys, with the exact nature of the dependence relying on the nature of dislocation slip in the matrix (planar vs. diffuse). The isothermal aging response of the precipitation strengthened Al-4(pct)Cu-1.5(pct)Mg alloys was not accelerated by the presence of TiB2. Cold work prior to artificial aging created additional geometrically necessary dislocations which serve as heterogeneous nucleation sites leading to accelerated aging, a finer precipitate size, and an increase in the strength of the alloy.

Structure and properties during aging of an Al-Cu-Li-Ag-Mg alloy, Weldalite (tm) 049

An Al-Cu-Li-Ag-Mg alloy, Weldalite (trademark) 049, was recently introduced as an ultra-high strength alloy (7000 MPa yield strength in artificially aged tempers) with good weldability. In addition, the alloy exhibits an extraordinary natural aging response (440 MPa yield strength (YS) in the unstretch condition) and a high ductility reversion condition which may be useful as a cold-forming temper. In contrast to other Al-Li alloys, these properties can essentially be obtained with or without a stretch or other coldworking operation prior to aging. Preliminary studies have revealed that the T4 temper (no stretch, natural age) is strengthened by a combination of GP zones and delta prime (Al3Li). The T6 temper (no stretch, aged at 180 C to peak strength) was reported to be strengthened primarily by T(sub 1) phase (Al2CuLi) with a minor presence of a theta prime like (Al2Cu) phase. On the other hand, a similar but lower solute containing alloy was reported to contain omega, (stoichiometry unknown), theta prime, and S prime in the peak strength condition. The purpose of this study is to further elucidate the strengthening phases in Weldalite (trademark) 049 in the unstretched tempers, and to follow the development of the microstructure from the T4 temper through reversion (180 C for 5 to 45 minutes) to the T6 temper.

Temperature effects on the deformation and fracture of Al-Li-Cu-In alloys

The crack initiation and growth fracture resistance of Al-Cu-Li and Al-Cu-Li-In alloys were characterized and optimized for cryogenic tank applications. Presently, the effects of stress state and temperature is being determined on the fracture toughness and fracture mechanisms of commercially available Vintage 3 2090-T81 and experimental 2090+In-T6. Precracked J-integral specimens of both alloys were tested at ambient and cryogenic temperatures in the plane stress and plane strain conditions. Considering ambient temperature, results showed that 2090-T81 exhibited the highest toughness in both plane strain and plane stress conditions. For the plane strain condition, reasonable crack initiation and growth toughness of 1090-T81 are associated with a significant amount of delamination and transgranular fracture. Plane stress toughnesses were higher and fracture was characterized by shear cracking with minimal delaminations. In comparisons, the fracture behavior of 2090+In-T6 is significantly degraded by subgrain boundary precipitation. Toughness is low and characterized by intersubgranular fracture with no delamination in the plane stress or plane strain conditions. Intersubgranular cracking is a low energy event which presumably occurs prior to the onset of slip band cracking. Copious grain boundary precipitation is atypical of commercially available 2090. At cryogenic temperatures, both alloys exhibit increased yield strength, toughness, and amount of delamination and shear cracking. The change in fracture mode of 2090+In-T6 from intersubgranular cracking at ambient temperature to a combination of intersubgranular cracking, shear cracking, and delamination at cryogenic temperature is the subject of further investigation.

Cosmogenic Be-10, Al-26, and He-3 in olivine from Maui lavas

This paper reports the presence of cosmogenic Be-10 and Al-26 in olivines from the Maui Haleakala basalts in which cosmogenic He-3 and Ne-21 were discovered. Based on production-rate calibrations in quartz crystals from late Pleistocene granite exposures in the Sierra Nevada, the Haleakala crater erosion rates derived from Be-10 and Al-26 concentrations agree within 10 percent and give a mean rate of 12 m/Myr, about 40 percent greater than the rate of 8.5 m/Myr previously derived from He-3 measurements. These results establish the feasibility of the simultaneous use of radioactive and stable cosmogenic nuclides for studies of exposure-ages and erosion-rates in basaltic and andesitic terrains.

GRIS observations of Al-26 gamma-ray line emission from two points in the Galactic plane

Both of the Gamma-Ray Imaging Spectrometer (GRIS) experiment's two observations of the Galactic center region, at l = zero and 335 deg respectively, detected Al-26 gamma-ray line emission. While these observations are consistent with the assumed high-energy gamma-ray distribution, they are consistent with other distributions as well. The data suggest that the Al-26 emission is distributed over Galactic longitude rather than being confined to a point source. The GRIS data also indicate that the 1809 keV line is broadened.

Cryogenic mechanical properties of low density superplastically formable Al-Li alloys

The aerospace industry is considering the use of low density, superplastically formable (SPF) materials, such as Al-Li alloys in cryogenic tankage. SPF modifications of alloys 8090, 2090, and 2090+In were tested for strength and Kahn tear toughness. The results were compared to those of similar tests of 2219-T87, an alloy currently used in cryogenic tankage, and 2090-T81, a recently studied Al-Li alloy with exceptional cryogenic properties (1-9). With decreasing temperature, all materials showed an increase in strength, while most materials showed an increase in elongation and decrease in Kahn toughness. The indium addition to 2090 increased alloy strength, but did not improve the strength-toughness combination. The fracture mode was predominantly intergranular along small, recrystallized grains, with some transgranular fracture, some ductile rupture, and some delamination on large, unrecrystallized grains.

The effect of TiB2 reinforcement on the mechanical properties of an Al-Cu-Li alloy-based metal-matrix composite

Weldalite 049, an Al-base Cu-Li-Mg-Ag-Zr alloy, achieves 700 MPa tensile strengths in the near-peak-aged temper in virtue of the nucleation of a T(1)-type platelike strengthening precipitate. Attention is presently given to the possibility that the alloy's modulus could be further increased through the addition of high-modulus TiB2 particles, using the 'XD' process, due to TiB2's good wettability with liquid Al. An 8-percent modulus increase is obtained with 4 vol pct TiB2.

The roles of Zr and Mn in processing and superplasticity of Al-Mg alloys

Processing studies have been conducted on two alloys, of nominal compositions Al-10Mg-0.1Zr or Al-10Mg-0.5Mn, in order to clarify the role of the dispersoid forming Zr or Mn additions. Mechanical property data reveal that the Mn-containing alloy has a lower maximum elongation but exhibits superplastic response over a broader range of temperature. Microstructural investigations and texture analyses were utilized to assess the effect of the presence of Al8Mg5 precipitates in combination with either Al3Zr or Al6Mn dispersoid particles during isothermal rolling at 300 C and subsequent tensile deformation at temperatures from 200-425 C.

Comment on 'The Space Shuttle's impact on the stratosphere' by Michael J. Prather et al

Prather et al. (1990) argued that no local hole in column ozone could occur above the launch site of the Space Shuttle because (1) the HCl in the exhaust would require some time to be converted into more catalytically active forms, (2) the Shuttle trajectory is not vertically aligned, and (3) the corridor of exhaust gases is laterally spread over more than 1000 km in a day. In contradiction to these arguments, it is maintained here that assumption (1) is inconsistent with the empirical evidence, rendering (2) and (3) insufficient to maintain the claim that no local hole in column ozone could occur. In a reply, ozone image data from the TOMS on Nimbus 7 is used to support the argument of Prather et al.

Formation of a metastable ferromagnetic tau phase during containerless melt processing and rapid quenching in Mn-Al-C alloys

Solidification of selected Mn-Al-C alloys during containerless levitation and rapid quenching has yielded the first report for a ferromagnetic metastable tau phase formed directly from the melt. Complete solidification to tau phase was interrupted by the competitive evolution of an equilibrium epsilon phase during recalescence. The amount of undercooling required to produce the metastable ferromagnetic tau phase in a Mn(0.55)Al(0.433)C(0.017) alloy during solidification was estimated as approximately 470 K based on differential thermal analysis results. When the alloy carbon content was increased to 3.4 at. pct, transition in structure development occurred so that the samples exhibited gamma 2 phase formation as well as tau and epsilon phases.

Aerodynamics of the advanced launch system (ALS) propulsion and avionics (P/A) module

This paper discusses the design and testing of candidate Advanced Launch System (ALS) Propulsion and Avionics (P/A) Module configurations. The P/A Module is a key element of future launch systems because it is essential to the recovery and reuse of high-value propulsion and avionics hardware. The ALS approach involves landing of first stage (booster) and/or second stage (core) P/A modules near the launch site to minimize logistics and refurbishment cost. The key issue addressed herein is the aerodynamic design of the P/A module, including the stability characteristics and the lift-to-drag (L/D) performance required to achieve the necessary landing guidance accuracy. The reference P/A module configuration was found to be statically stable for the desired flight regime, to provide adequate L/D for targeting, and to have effective modulation of the L/D performance using a body flap. The hypersonic aerodynamic trends for nose corner radius, boattail angle and body flap deflections were consistent with pretest predictions. However, the levels for the L/D and axial force for hypersonic Mach numbers were overpredicted by impact theories.

The bonding of multiple ligands to Mg(+) and Al(+)

The bonding of one to four waterligands to Mg(+) and Al(+) is studied. The bonding is very different from that found for multiple ligands bound to Na(+) or Cu(+). All the waters bind on the same side of the Mg or Al because of the polarization of the 3s orbital away from the ligands. Two benzene and methanol molecules also have a ligand-Mg-ligand angle of less than 180 deg with the angle determined by ligand-ligand repulsion.

Control of interfaces in Al-C fibre composites

The interface of Al-C fiber composite was modified by coating a silver layer on the surface of carbon fibres prior to making composites, in an attempt to improve the wettability between molten aluminum and carbon fibers during infiltration. An electroless plating technique was adopted and perfected to provide a homogeneous silver coating on the carbon fiber surface. Al-C fiber composites were prepared using a liquid infiltration technique in a vacuum. It was found that silver coating promoted the wetting between aluminum and carbon fibers, particularly with polyacrylonitrile-base carbon fibers. However, due to rapid dissolution of silver in molten aluminum, it was believed that the improved infiltration was not due to the wetting behavior between molten aluminum and silver. The cleaning of the fiber surface and the preservation of the cleaned carbon surface with silver coating was considered to be the prime reason for the improved wettability. Interfacial reactions between aluminum and carbon fibers were observed. Amorphous carbon was found to react more with aluminum than graphitic carbon. This is believed to be because of the inertness of the graphitic basal planes.
