Aerosol Optical Depth Best Estimate Value-Added Product Report

Four aerosol optical depth (AOD) products are offered by four collocated ground-based instruments deployed at the U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s Southern Great Plains (SGP) observatory (SGP Central Facility 1 [C1] and Extended Facility 13 [E13]) for more than two decades. Two of these instruments, the multifilter rotating shadowband radiometers (MFRSRs C1 and E13), are sensors with horizontal hemispherical receivers shaded by rotating shadowbands.

Micropulse Lidar Cloud Mask Machine-Learning Value-Added Product Report

Cloud detection algorithms of various techniques have been developed and applied to atmospheric ground-based lidar data to identify cloud boundaries and produce clouds masks. While these algorithms are able to identify a wide variety of cloud types and conditions, it is often observed that the algorithms can still fail to accurately detect clouds that are readily discernible when inspecting the lidar imagery. Based on this observation, an alternative approach for cloud detection is to take advantage of machine-learning capabilities and the trained human eye as an interpreter of lidar images, and in turn, to train a neural network to recognize the desired features in the lidar data.

Coal as Value-Added for Lithium Battery Anodes (Final Report)

Graphite is a basic material used for energy storage in lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. More than 70% of worldwide graphite production and nearly 50% of the annual graphite supply for the United States comes from China. Potential economic and national security concerns exist because Li-ion batteries are used not only for the fast-growing electrical vehicle market (15.6% compound annual growth rate [CAGR] from 2018 to 2028 in North America), but also for defense applications including unmanned aerial and ground vehicles. Development of an alternative formulation for Li-ion batteries is key. Building upon previous research confirming the ability of silicon alloys to improve the energy density of anodes, Semplastics developed a novel material based on our X-MAT® polymer-derived ceramic (PDC) technology. The X-MAT anode material is a composite of chemically tailored silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) and domestically sourced coal powder, designed to be a drop-in replacement for graphite within Li-ion battery anodes. Preliminary tests of this material showed more than twice the reversible capacity of graphite anodes (1,000 mAh/g vs. 372 mAh/g), with excellent stability and capacity retention, almost 100% coulombic efficiency, low voltage potential, and low thermal expansion. At full adoption in 2024, we expect the coal utilization to reach 27,300 tons. Through this project, Semplastics proposed to complete development and begin commercialization of this material. The objective was to determine the best formulation for technical performance and economic viability. At the end of the project, the X-MAT anode material is ready for implementation into existing battery manufacturing processes and can have a significant impact on the utilization of coal, with positive effects for the mining sector and the mitigation of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions.

SAIL Field Campaign X-Band Precipitation Radar Surface Quantitative Precipitation Estimation (SQUIRE) Value-Added Product Report

In 2010, the U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility procured 3- and 5-cm wavelength radars for documenting the macrophysical, microphysical, and dynamical structure of precipitating systems. In order to maximize the scientific impact, ARM supported the development of an application chain to correct for various phenomena in order to retrieve the lowest retrieved value on a Cartesian grid. This report details the motivation, science, and progress to date, as well as charting a path forward.

Novel Algae Technology to Utilize CO 2 for Value Added Products

The Helios-NRG technology for converting coal-based flue CO 2 into valuable products has been successfully validated through a series of rigorous test programs. The key component, the MSC (Multi Stage Continuous System), played a pivotal role in this process. The MSC's various stages were seamlessly integrated and controlled by a second-generation automated system, surpassing project goals in terms of both algal productivity and capture efficiency. Notably, the MSC's operational duration improved while maintaining healthy cultures. The integrated system was rigorously tested under real outdoor conditions with varying sunlight levels and template flue gas. The final MSC test, conducted at the NCCC, successfully met project objectives.

Utilizing IBM Spectrum LSF Simulator to Understand the Impacts of Adding AI Workloads to Capability Supercomputing

Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence has been identified as an emerging priority science area within the Department of Energy. Large scale accelerator based supercomputers like Summit, while traditionally employed for modeling and simulation, provide architectures that are suitable for accelerating the ML/AI workloads at scale. With the release of Summit in 2018, there was an increase in the number of ML/AI based projects seeking time on the machine. It quickly became apparent that the allocations and job runtimes for this workload deviated from traditional large scale modeling and simulation. Accommodating this new workload requires understanding the impacts to traditional large scale modeling and simulation.

Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS)-Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) Merged Size Distribution (mergedsmpsaps) Value-Added Product Report

Aerosol particles influence the Earth’s radiation balance directly by absorbing and scattering light and indirectly by influencing cloud formation, properties, and lifetimes. Measurements of aerosol particle optical properties, mass loading, size distributions, microphysical properties, cloud formation properties, and chemical composition are important for understanding the aerosol life cycle and for validating earth system models that predict these quantities. The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s Aerosol Observing System (AOS) is a highly instrumented platform designed to house instruments that measure many of these aerosol properties in situ. Currently, ARM operates at least four different instruments that measure a portion of the ambient aerosol size distribution. Most users are interested in the entire size distribution or a portion of the size distribution that extends across the measurement range of multiple instruments. However, merging these distributions is not trivial as the instruments employ different measurement principals and, in most cases, report data as a function of different representations of the aerosol diameter.
