Identification of new infrared bands in a carbon-rich Mira variable

Complete 0.75-13 micron spectrometry of a carbon-rich, Mira-class variable star is presented for the first time. It is noted that although the near-infrared is dominated by photospheric absorption bands of the CN red system, the infrared becomes progressively dominated by the bands of the polyatomic molecules HCN and C2H2. Since the band at 3.1 microns is known to be due to HCN and C2H2, it is possible to associate bands at 1.04, 1.53, 1.85, 2.5, 2.7, 3.56, 3.85, 4.8, and 7.1 microns with HCN and C2H2. The spectrum suggests that radiative transfer in the carbon Mira class cannot be discussed quantitatively without the inclusion of HCN and C2H2 opacity. On the basis of the carbon star models of Querci and Querci (1974), it is deduced that the abundance ratio of HCN to C2H2 can be used to indicate whether 3-alpha-processed or CNO-processed material is in the outer atmosphere. An 11.3 micron SiC dust-emission feature is present, although it differs significantly from the 11.7 micron SiC feature in Y CVn. A featureless emission is present from 4 to 13 microns and can be ascribed to optically thin graphite grains having a temperature of 450 K.

A first look at the eclipsing cataclysmic variable Lanning 10

Photometry and spectroscopy of a new cataclysmic variable star, Lanning 10 are presented. The star is shown to be an eclipsing binary with a 7h 42m orbital period. Blue flickering is observed to occur on a time scale of 10 minutes. The light curve is analyzed with a numerical simulation of the eclipse of the accretion disk by the lobe-filling star. The disk nearly spans the Roche lobe of the white dwarf, and its surface brightness is a steep function of radius. Spectra show broad H alpha and He I 6678 A emission lines from the accretion disk and a weak absorption feature from the red dwarf. Radial velocity measurements of the H alpha emission line vary systematically with binary phase. The observed velocity amplitude 240 km/s, gives the mass function 0.46 solar masses. A phase shift of the velocity curve relative to the eclipse ephemeris indicates that a brightness asymmetry exists in the inner parts of the disk.

Notes on the system TV Geminorum

Low-resolution SWP spectra and high-resolution LWR spectra of the SRc variable star TV Gem have been studied. The available ultraviolet spectrophotometry and UBV photometry of the system can be interpreted in terms of the blended light from a B3.5 IV star and an M1 Iab star. The separation of the two stars is less than about 3 arc sec. Since the magnitude difference is a minimum in the B filter, being about 1.6 mag there, direct observation of TV Gem in a passband at 4400 A under conditions of good seeing might reveal the blue companion. No evidence was found for absorption lines of Mg II formed in the part of the wind of the M star which is projected against the disk of the B star.

Comparison of variations in the visible and ultraviolet spectra of a Centauri

Short and long wavelength, high resolution IUE spectrographs of the He I spectrum variable star a Cen are the basis of the present equivalent width and central depth measurements of UV absorption lines. The period for cyclic intensity variations is determined by means of a four-parameter, least squares fit to a sinusoid. Other spectrographic and photometric intensity determinations of the He I 4026 A line are combined with the present data to yield a period of 8.81620 + or - 0.00006 days.

Sandqvist 187 - A dense molecular cloud in Norma

Observations of Sandqvist 187, an elongated dust cloud in the southern constellation Norma are presented and discussed. The cloud contains two Herbig-Haro objects, HH 56 and HH 57. HH 57 currently displays on its NE edge a 17th mag variable star of the FU Ori type. Using the Columbia University 1.2 m millimeter-wave telescope at Cerro Tololo, the region is mapped and an extended CO cloud which envelops and is elongated along the optical dust cloud is found. The position of maximum CO emission coincides with HH 56 and HH 57. Assuming a distance of 0.7 kpc, the total mass of the cloud is found to be close to 500 solar masses. The CO spectra show evidence of a molecular flow. Photographs and CCD images obtained mostly with the CTIO 4 m telescope show the detailed optical structure of the dark cloud's core region. The Herbig-Haro object HH 56 appears to be related to an emission-line star embedded in the small nebula Reipurth 13, not to the FU Ori star in HH 57.

The CCD/Transit Instrument (CTI) data-analysis system

An account is given of the Kitt Peak CCD/Transit Instrument's software for the automated archiving, analysis, and interrogation of each observation night's nearly 450 Mbytes of image data. The analysis phase is performed by a pair of linked algorithms, one of which operates on the absolute pixel-values and the other on the spatial derivative of the data, so that both isolated and merged images are reliably detected in a single pass. This is in due course followed by the automatic comparison of each new detection with a set of predefined templates in parameter space, in order to find such interesting objects as supernovae, quasars, and variable stars.

The fading of R Coronae Borealis

Using the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) low-resolution spectra were obtained of R CrB, the prototype of its class of variable stars, shortly after the beginning of its 1983-84 minimum and during its rise to maximum again. The behavior of the spectra during the rise to maximum is similar to the behavior of the spectra of RY Sgr during a similar phase in 1979-80. The extinction data have been analyzed using Mie theory and are consistent with the stellar photosphere being obscured by 20-nm glassy carbon particles. The observations during the decline to minimum show substantial spectral variations which cannot be explained in terms of simple continuum absorption. An interpretation of the observed behavior in terms of a model incorporating an occulting cloud and circumstellar emission is offered.

US 943 - A 19th mag eclipsing cataclysmic variable with a period of 2 hr 3.8 min

The high-latitude, V equals about 19.5, blue variable star US 943 is found to be an eclipsing binary with an orbital period of 2.06 hr. The light curve is dominated by an orbital hump which has an amplitude of 0.9 mag in V and is centered about 0.17 orbital cycles before the 1.5-mag deep eclipse. There is evidence that the eclipse has at least two components. The overall appearance of the star is that of a dwarf nova in quiescence, a conclusion that is supported by the observation of a subsequent bright state (V equals about 15) suggesting a dwarf nova outburst.

Table mountain observatory support to other programs

The Table Mountain Observatory (TMO) facilities include well equipped 24 inch and 16 inch telescopes with a 40 inch telescope (owned by Pomona College) due for completion during FY 89. This proposal is to provide operational support (equipment maintenance, setup, and observing assistnce) at TMO to other programs. The program currently most heavily supported by this grant is the asteroid photometry program directed by A. W. Harris. During 1987, about 20 asteroids were observed, including a near-earth asteroid, 1951 Midas. The photometric observations are used to derive rotation periods, estimate shapes and pole orientations, and to define the phase relations of asteroids. The E class asteroid 64 Angelina was observed, and showed the same opposition spike observed of 44 Jysa, last year. Comet observations are made with the narrow band camera system of David Rees, University College London. Observational support and training was provided to students and faculty from Claremont Colleges for variable star observing programs. Researchers propose to continue the asteroid program, with emphasis on measuring phase relations of low and high albedo asteroids at very low phase angles, and supporting collaborative studies of asteroid shapes.

The inter-outburst behavior of cataclysmic variables

Existing International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) and American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) archive data was used to accomplish a large scale study of what happens to the ultraviolet flux of accretion disk systems during the quiescent intervals between outbursts and how it relates to the preceding outburst characteristics of amplitude and width. The data sample involved multiple IUE observations for 16 dwarf novae and 8 novae along with existing optical coverage. Results indicate that most systems show correlated ultraviolet (UV) flux behavior with interoutburst phase, with 60 percent of the dwarf novae and 50 percent of the novae having decreasing flux trends while 33 percent of the dwarf novae and 38 percent of the novae show rising UV flux during the quiescent interval. All of the dwarf novae with decreasing UV fluxes at 1475A have orbital periods longer than 4.4 hours, while all (except BV Cen) with flat or rising fluxes at 1475A have orbital periods less than two hours. There are not widespread correlations of the UV fluxes with the amplitude of the preceding outburst and no correlations with the width of the outburst. From a small sample (7) that have relatively large quiescent V magnitude changes between the IUE observations, most show a strong correlation between the UV and optical continuum. Interpretation of the results is complicated by not being able to determine how much the white dwarf contributes to the ultraviolet flux. However, it is now evident that noticeable changes are occurring in the hot zones in accreting systems long after the outburst, and not only for systems that are dominated by the white dwarf. Whether these differences are due to different outburst mechanisms or to changes on white dwarfs which provide varying contributions to the UV flux remains to be determined.

AFGL ten micron mosaic array spectrometer: Recent results

Recent measurements were made with a novel mosaic array prism spectrometer on long period variable stars of carbon and oxygen-rich atmospheres. These stars have generally large IR excesses and show strong SiC and silicate emission features, respectively. A comparison is provided by published spectra obtained with the IRAS Low Resolution Spectrometer. Emission feature equivalent widths are independent of the absolute photometric level of the spectra and provide information on the relative variation of the feature and continuum fluxes between the epochs of the space and groundbased observations.

Spectrophotometry of the shell around AG Carinae

Spatially-resolved long-slit spectrophotometry are presented for two regions of the shell nebula around the P-Cygni variable star AG Carinae. The spectra cover the 3700-6800 A wavelength range. Emission-line diagnostics are used to derive extinction, electron temperatures, and densities for various positions in the nebula. The chemical abundances and ionization structure are calculated and compared with other types of planetary nebulae and shells around other luminous stars. It is found that the N/O and N/S ratios of Ag Car are high compared to solar neighborhood ISM values. The O/H depletion found for the AG Car shell approaches that found in the condensations of the Eta Car system.

Model atmospheres with periodic shocks

The pulsation of a long-period variable star generates shock waves which dramatically affect the structure of the star's atmosphere and produce conditions that lead to rapid mass loss. Numerical modeling of atmospheres with periodic shocks is being pursued to study the processes involved and the evolutionary consequences for the stars. It is characteristic of these complex dynamical systems that most effects result from the interaction of various time-dependent processes.

The whole earth telescope - A new astronomical instrument

A new multimirror ground-based telescope for time-series photometry of rapid variable stars, designed to minimize or eliminate gaps in the brightness record caused by the rotation of the earth, is described. A sequence of existing telescopes distributed in longitude, coordinated from a single control center, is used to measure designated target stars so long as they are in darkness. Data are returned by electronic mail to the control center, where they are analyzed in real time. This instrument is the first to provide data of continuity and quality that permit true high-resolution power spectroscopy of pulsating white dwarf stars.

FG Sagittae - No hot companion?

The nucleus of the planetary nebula He 1-5 (= PK 60 -7 deg 1), the variable star FG Sge, was observed with the SWP camera of the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite to detect a hot companion of the star, if such a companion exists. The observation found no evidence for the existance of a hot companion in the 1200-2000 A range of the SWP camera and supported the contention that FG Sge underwent a helium shell flash during the past century, and that the surrounding nebula, He 1-5, is a nebula of fossil ionization. Despite the currently accepted fossil ionization model, constraints posed by the satellite detection limit, the observed H-beta flux, and the adopted radii for white dwarfs still allow the possibility of a putative hot companion photoionizing this nebula.

Precise automatic differential stellar photometry

The factors limiting the precision of differential stellar photometry are reviewed. Errors due to variable atmospheric extinction can be reduced to below 0.001 mag at good sites by utilizing the speed of robotic telescopes. Existing photometric systems produce aliasing errors, which are several millimagnitudes in general but may be reduced to about a millimagnitude in special circumstances. Conventional differential photometry neglects several other important effects, which are discussed in detail. If all of these are properly handled, it appears possible to do differential photometry of variable stars with an overall precision of 0.001 mag with ground based robotic telescopes.
