Very small-scale, segregating-fluidized-bed experiments: A dataset for CFD-DEM validation and uncertainty quantification

IWe report fluidization experiments were conducted on a small scale and with a rapid response (short duration) to enable corresponding simulations at low-computational cost. Rise times are reported for four or fewer polyethylene particles (intruders) in an air-fluidized bed of ~5000 group D glass beads. Experimental inputs were completely characterized—particle properties, system dimensions and operating conditions—which is necessary for validating computational fluid mechanics (CFD)-discrete element method (DEM) including a comprehensive uncertainty quantification (UQ) analysis. Input uncertainties are reported as bounds or cumulative distribution functions of measured values. The staggering number of simulations required to complete a UQ analysis (~O[10 4 ] simulations corresponding to ~5 uncertain inputs) motivates this study. These segregating-bed experiments are designed to permit analogous CFD-DEM simulations to complete in less than a day on a single (~2.5 GHz) computational processor unit (CPU). Segregation times are reported for several operating conditions, intruder sizes, and initial configurations, providing a rich dataset for numerical model testing, validation and UQ.

Data Set Analysis to Reduce Uncertainty in Formula Assignments of Ultrahigh Resolution Mass Spectra

Environmental samples contain a vast array of organic compounds with diverse elemental compositions and heteroatom content. Molecular formula assignments of ultrahigh resolution mass spectra (HRMS) hold promise for elucidating the molecular composition of these compounds. However, the need to account for an assortment of heteroatoms increases the uncertainty associated with individual assignments – and ultimately the ecological, biological, and biogeochemical insights gleaned from the assignments. To address this challenge, we introduce a formula assignment strategy that leverages HRMS data sets to improve assignment confidence, filter false assignments, and mitigate bias in assignment routines. The strategy, implemented using CoreMS, first identifies the highest confidence assignment for a recurring ion in a data set by assessing the mass accuracy and isotopologue similarity of all assignments to the ion across the data set. The second component of the strategy examines the consistency of mass errors for an assigned ion throughout a data set and flags formulas with statistically unlikely deviations in mass error. Here, we illustrate the application and utility of the strategy by comparing its results against documented misassignment patterns within a set of oceanographic samples that were measured with 21 T Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry. Because the efficacy of our strategy improves with data set size, it is particularly useful for enhancing assignment confidence in large HRMS data sets common in studies of environmental systems.

Uncertainty and Sensitivity Analysis Methods and Applications in the GDSA Framework (FY2022)

The Spent Fuel and Waste Science and Technology (SFWST) Campaign of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Nuclear Energy (NE), Office of Fuel Cycle Technology (FCT) is conducting research and development (R&D) on geologic disposal of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and high-level nuclear waste (HLW). Two high priorities for SFWST disposal R&D are design concept development and disposal system modeling. These priorities are directly addressed in the SFWST Geologic Disposal Safety Assessment (GDSA) control account, which is charged with developing a geologic repository system modeling and analysis capability, and the associated software, GDSA Framework, for evaluating disposal system performance for nuclear waste in geologic media. GDSA Framework is supported by SFWST Campaign and its predecessor the Used Fuel Disposition (UFD) campaign.

A Comprehensive Open-Source R Software For Statistical Metrology Calculations: From Uncertainty Evaluation To Risk Analysis

Whether calibrating equipment or inspecting products on the factory floor, metrology requires many complicated statistical calculations to achieve a full understanding and evaluation of measurement uncertainty and quality. In order to assist its workforce in performing these calculations in a consistent and rigorous way, the Primary Standards Lab at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) has developed a free and open-source software package for computing various metrology calculations from uncertainty propagation to risk analysis. In addition to propagating uncertainty through a measurement model using the well-known Guide to Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement or Monte Carlo approaches, evaluating the individual Type A and Type B uncertainty components that go into the measurement model often requires other statistical methods such as analysis of variance or determining uncertainty in a fitted curve. Once the uncertainty in a measurement has been calculated, it is usually evaluated from a risk perspective to ensure the measurement is suitable for making a particular conformance decision. Finally, SNL’s software can perform all these calculations in a single application via an easy-to-use graphical interface, where the different functions are integrated so the results of one calculation can be used as inputs to another calculation.

Uncertainty Quantification and Sensitivity Analysis of Nuclear Construction Cost Reduction Pathways

High construction costs have plagued recent nuclear projects and they hamper the widespread deployment of nuclear technology. The Nuclear Cost Reduction Tool is a plant economic framework that quantifies the impact that various plant design and construction attributes have on construction costs and cost overruns and shows the positive effects of learning over a series of deployments. However, a downside of the current model is that all model outputs and capabilities are deterministic. To provide a more comprehensive view, this study evaluated the impact of model parameter uncertainty through a sensitivity analysis applied to 18 model parameters. This approach quantified the impact of model uncertainty on the output variables of Net Overnight Capital Cost (Net OCC), Construction Duration (CD), and Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE). Monte Carlo analysis revealed uncertainty distributions for these variables, showing that absolute uncertainty decreases over a series of deployments. A local sensitivity analysis showed that even small parameter perturbations (5%) can have a significant impact on project execution, highlighting areas that could reduce costs by billions across an order book of plants. The results of this study have improved the understanding of the model and identified the most impactful model parameters and construction attributes.

Data-Driven Approach for Uncertainty Propagation and Reachability Analysis in Dynamical Systems

In this paper, we propose a data-driven approach for uncertainty propagation and reachability analysis in a dynamical system. The proposed approach relies on the linear lifting of a nonlinear system using linear Perron-Frobenius (P-F) and Koopman operators. Here, the uncertainty can be characterized in terms of the moments of a probability density function. We demonstrate how the P-F and Koopman operators are used for propagating the moments. Time-series data is used for the finite-dimensional approximation of the linear operators, thereby enabling data-driven approach for moment propagation. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Uncertainty Quantification of Bifacial Performance Modeling

Analysis on uncertainty in the annual energy of PV systems that can be attributed to parameters of particular importance to bifacial PV modules is presented. Monte Carlo simulations are used to evaluate the effect of uncertain module bifaciality factors, module transmission fractions, albedo values, and ground clearance. The analyses cover a wide spectrum of potential PV array archetypes through variation of installation parameters. The results of the Monte Carlo analysis reveal that the uncertainty is largely dependent on albedo uncertainty, but more simulations are needed to identify trends across system archetypes. The simulations are aimed at attributing an annual energy uncertainty factor for bifacial considerations that can be applied in post-processing of project probability of exceedance analysis.
