The dynamic reaction behavior (i.e., transient responses) of IR-observable adsorbed species and gaseous products obtained from transient kinetic studies provide valuable kinetic and mechanistic information, namely: the abundance of active intermediates and their reactivity distribution, the chemical structure of IR-observable active and spectator species, the sequence of their formation, and the kinetically significant and rate-determining step under reaction conditions of practical catalysis. We discuss the use of transient response data to elucidate the reaction mechanisms of several gas-solid reactions: CO/H 2 , CO/H 2 /C 2 H 4 , photocatalytic oxidation of ethanol, and the CO 2 -amine reaction. The IR coupled with transient kinetic techniques is especially useful for investigating the mechanisms of photocatalytic reactions because both photogenerated electrons and many adsorbed species are IR-active (exhibiting measurable IR bands), and their evolution occurs on a time scale of seconds at ambient temperature. We highlight the key features and limitations of in situ IR with transient kinetics, as well as their significance in catalyst design.
Sugarcane is a major crop of unclear origins due to its complex polyploid interspecific genome. We analyzed genome ancestries using whole-genome sequence data from 390 representative accessions based on repeated k-mers and chloroplast phylogeny. The results provided evidence that Saccharum officinarum was domesticated in the New Guinea region from the S. robustum wild species and revealed that its genome is a mosaic involving different S. robustum subgroups. We discovered a wild Saccharum contributor to most modern cultivars, likely originating from East Melanesia. We highlighted two early centers of sugarcane diversification associated with human transport, one in continental Asia through hybridization with different S. spontaneum subgroups and one in the Melanesian and Polynesian islands via hybridization with the discovered ancestor and Miscanthus. Finally, we revealed the genome ancestry of modern cultivars, highlighting untapped wild Saccharum diversity as a source of alleles for breeding programs.

Heteroatoms-doped carbon materials have recently emerged as effective catalysts for various chemical and electrochemical reactions. The free of metals especially noble metals reduces cost and eliminates issues like sintering or leaching of metals at elevated temperatures in solvents. In this work, selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) is for the first time achieved over simple nitrogen-doped carbon (N-C) catalysts. Further, at optimal reaction conditions, a 91% yield of DMF is obtained with excellent catalyst stability. Extensive characterization, including extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (sXAS), model reactions, basic data science analysis, and DFT calculations suggest that ppm of Fe in particular FeN 3 sites formed in pyrolysis, rather than non-metallic elements, drive key steps such as H 2 activation and deoxygenation of –OH during HMF HDO.
The accurate description of activity trends among perovskite-oxide oxygen-evolution-reaction (OER) catalysts using electronic-structure descriptors requires that the bulk structure of the catalyst is comparable to that of the surface. Few studies have addressed the dynamic nature of the catalyst's structure during the OER and the consequential implications for understanding activity. Here, we use a combination of electrochemical and materials-characterization techniques to study the surface reconstruction and the associated formation of a new redox-active phase on LaNiO 3 particles, LaNiO 3 epitaxial films, and an analogous Ruddlesden-Popper phase, La 2 NiO 4 . Small, but characteristic, redox features corresponding to Ni redox in nominally amorphous NiO x H y are observed during cyclic voltammetry of these initially fully crystalline materials. The size of these redox features grows with prolonged cycling and contributes to an increased surface area as determined from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Here we find the OER activity is strongly dependent on soluble Fe species in the electrolyte, common impurities in alkaline media. These observations are consistent with the reconstruction of the crystalline surface to form NiO x H y species and subsequent activation by adsorption of Fe forming the well-known and extremely active NiFeO x H y OER catalyst.
Genotoxic impurities (GTIs) are potential carcinogens that need to be controlled down to ppm or lower concentration levels in pharmaceuticals under strict regulations. The static headspace gas chromatography (HS-GC) coupled with electron capture detection (ECD) is an effective approach to monitor halogenated and nitroaromatic genotoxins. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) possess tunable physico-chemical properties and low vapor pressure for HS-GC methods. In this study, zwitterionic and non-ionic DESs have been used for the first time to develop and validate a sensitive analytical method for the analysis of 24 genotoxins at sub-ppm concentrations. Compared to non-ionic diluents, zwitterionic DESs produced exceptional analytical performance and the betaine: 7 (1,4- butane diol) DES outperformed the betaine: 5 (1,4-butane diol) DES. Limits of detection (LOD) down to the 5-ppb concentration level were achieved in DESs. Wide linear ranges spanning over 5 orders of magnitude (0.005–100 µg g –1 ) were obtained for most analytes with exceptional sensitivities and high precision. The method accuracy and precision were validated using 3 commercially available drug substances and excellent recoveries were obtained. Finally, this study broadens the applicability of HS-GC in the determination of less volatile GTIs by establishing DESs as viable diluent substitutes for organic solvents in routine pharmaceutical analysis.
