Nuclear multipole responses from chiral effective field theory interactions

We probe nuclear multipole resonances in the framework of the random-phase approximation by using the interaction obtained from the chiral effective field theory. The three-nucleon force is included in a form of the in-medium two-nucleon interaction, which was derived from the chiral three-nucleon force. The isoscalar monopole, isoscalar dipole, isovector dipole, and isoscalar quadrupole resonances of the closed-shell 56,68,78 Ni have been investigated. The calculations reasonably reproduce the experimental multipole resonances of 56,68 Ni, and well describe the pygmy dipole resonance and dipole polarizability measured in 68 Ni. The multipole resonances of 78 Ni, including pygmy dipole resonance and dipole polarizability, are predicted. The detailed effects of the tensor force and three-body force are analyzed by dissecting the chiral interaction. In this work, we find that in general the tensor force effect on electric giant resonances is not as significant as the effect from the three-body force, although the tensor force provides more than half of the binding energy. The effect from three-body force is strong in light nuclei. Particularly, three-body force is crucial for the formation of the pygmy resonance in calculations.

The topology of the regularized integral surfaces of the 3-body problem

Momentum, angular momentum, and energy of integral surfaces in the planar three-body problem are considered. The end points of orbits which cross an isolating block are identified. It is shown that this identification has a unique extension to an identification which pairs the end points of orbits entering the block and which end in a binary collision with the end points of orbits leaving the block and which come from a binary collision. The problem of regularization is that of showing that the identification of the end points of crossing orbits has a continuous, unique extension. The regularized phase space for the three-body problem was obtained, as were regularized integral surfaces for the problem on which the three-body equations of motion induce flows. Finally the topology of these surfaces is described.

Metal-rich meteorites from the aubrite parent body

Three metal-rich meteorites - Mt. Egerton, Horse Creek, and LEW 88055 - were studied and it is suggested that they formed in the aubrite parent body. LEW 85369 and 88631 may also have a common origin, but these rocks have not yet been studied in detail. This body was probably heated to about 1600 C by a very strong heat source. While molten, metal agglomerated into sizeable nodules which never segregated efficiently to form a core, but were trapped in the silicate mantle. Different clasts and lithologies in aubrites solidified and cooled under local equilibrium conditions of oxygen fugacity, and with different thermal histories. Impacts mixed clasts from throughout the parent body, creating the typical aubrite breccias.

Calculation of trajectories using constant and slowly varying functions

A method is presented for calculating trajectories for the restricted problem of three bodies which utilizes conic propagation of the state vector with frequency correction of position and velocity by means of a constant or slowly varying function. This method of calculating trajectories was applied to the planar circular restricted three body problem, the planar elliptic restricted problem, and the ephemeral restricted problem. Two methods (the refined method and the straight forward method) of determining the direction of the position correction are presented for the circular restricted problem and the elliptic restricted problem of three bodies. Only the straight forward method was used with the ephemeral restricted problem. The earth, the moon, and a space vehicle comprise the restricted three body model that is used.

Computational approaches for three-nucleon systems

Highlights: • Pedagogical review on the computational aspects of the three-nucleon system. • Detailed numerical steps for solving the three-body problem. • Three-nucleon binding and scattering for two different separable potentials. • Triton binding with partial-wave projected chiral potentials. We revisit the three-nucleon system with two kinds of nucleon–nucleon interactions: separable potentials and chiral forces, showing the computational aspects in detail. We start with S-wave separable potentials for which there are simplified forms for the Faddeev equations describing the scattering and binding of three nucleons. We then discuss the partial-wave projected case with a chiral potential considering only one channel so that the computational details can be clearly shown.

Many-body expansion for light nuclear systems

Here we extend the many-body expansion (MBE), previously applied to hydrogen bonded and molecular systems, to the light nuclear systems 3 H and 3 He by considering the nucleonic degrees of freedom as fundamental in the expansion. The analysis is based on the Pauli nucleonic dynamics (PND) model, a simple antisymmetrized dynamical code, inspired by the sophisticated constrained molecular dynamics (CoMD) model. The total energy of the 2 H nucleus is calculated with this model at -2.312 MeV, which is within 4% of the experimental value of -2.225 MeV. The application of the MBE yields results for the three-body term in the 3 H nucleus that is comparable with previous estimates, while it is reported for the first time for the nucleus of 3 He . The energies of 3 H and 3 He that include the sum of the one- and two-body terms with the model are - 6.97 ± 0.21 MeV and - 6.19 ± 0.21 MeV and the three-body terms, estimated from the difference of the sum of the one- and two-body terms from the experimentally measured energies, are -1.51 ± 0.21 MeV and -1.53 ± 0.21 MeV, respectively. The MBE for the 3 H and 3 He nuclei is qualitatively similar to the one previously reported for the water trimer: the two- and three-body terms are negative with the latter amounting to ~3% of the former. Additionally, the three-body terms correspond to about 16–23% of the total energy of the bound systems, a percentage that is also comparable to the one in the water trimer (17%). In this manner, the MBE analysis can be applied to light nuclear systems following the same protocol as the one that has been previously extensively used for hydrogen bonded molecular systems.

An interactive method for surface fitting three-dimensional bodies

The paper discusses a computerized surface fitting procedure which, using interactive graphics, will surface fit mathematical relations to complex three-dimensional bodies. The program has been written so that it 'leads' the user step-by-step through the procedure, thus allowing a user of limited experience to rapidly digitize a body and obtain an accurate surface fit. Results are presented which indicate that the method yields accurate coordinates, slopes, and radii of curvature at any specified position on the body provided an adequate number of accurate cross section coordinates are available to adequately describe the body.

A systematic analysis of phase stability in refractory high entropy alloys utilizing linear and non-linear cluster expansion models

We report that obtaining surrogate models for various types of materials has long been a goal of computational material scientists and physicists, as they allow the calculation of thermodynamic quantities and properties of interest far more efficiently than DFT. Many surrogate models, including interatomic potentials generated by machine learning algorthims and cluster expansions, rely on incorporating many-body interactions such as three-body or four-body interactions. When utilizing machine learning algorithms for interatomic potentials, it is common to start with two-body interactions and systematically include three- and four-body clusters to improve the fit, stopping when including the additional clusters does not measurably change the predictive power of the model. In cluster expansions for FCC and related lattices, it is often enough to include mostly two-body interactions and a handful of three-body interactions. However, it remains to be seen whether those will be enough in the case of lattices with a lower packing fraction, such as BCC.

Evolution of Efimov states

The Efimov phenomenon manifests itself as an emergent discrete scaling symmetry in the quantum three-body problem. In the unitarity limit, it leads to an infinite tower of three-body bound states with energies forming a geometric sequence. Here in this work, we study the evolution of these so-called Efimov states using relativistic scattering theory. We identify them as poles of the three-particle S matrix and trace their trajectories in the complex energy plane as they evolve from virtual states through bound states to resonances. We dial the scattering parameters toward the unitarity limit and observe the emergence of the universal scaling of energies and couplings - a behavior known from the non-relativistic case. Interestingly, we find that Efimov resonances follow unusual, cyclic trajectories accumulating at the three-body threshold and then disappear at some values of the two-body scattering length. We propose a partial resolution to this ?missing states? problem.

Analytic continuation of the relativistic three-particle scattering amplitudes

We investigate the relativistic scattering of three identical scalar bosons interacting via pair-wise interactions. Extending techniques from the nonrelativistic three-body scattering theory, we provide a detailed and general prescription for solving and analytically continuing integral equations describing the three-body reactions. We use these techniques to study a system with zero angular momenta described by a single scattering length leading to a bound state in a two-body subchannel. We obtain bound-state-particle and three-particle amplitudes in the previously unexplored kinematical regime; in particular, for real energies below elastic thresholds and complex energies in the physical and unphysical Riemann sheets. We extract positions of three-particle bound-states that agree with previous finite-volume studies, providing further evidence for the consistency of the relativistic finite-volume three-body quantization conditions. We also determine previously unobserved virtual bound states in this theory. Lastly, we find numerical evidence of the breakdown of the two-body finite-volume formalism in the vicinity of the left-hand cuts and argue for the generalization of the existing formalism.

Uncertainties in ab initio nuclear structure calculations with chiral interactions

We present theoretical ground state energies and their uncertainties for p -shell nuclei obtained from chiral effective field theory internucleon interactions as a function of chiral order, fitted to two- and three-body data only. We apply a Similary Renormalization Group transformation to improve the numerical convergence of the many-body calculations, and discuss both the numerical uncertainties arising from basis truncations and those from omitted induced many-body forces, as well as chiral truncation uncertainties. With complete Next-to-Next-to-Leading (N 2 LO) order two- and three-body interactions, we find significant overbinding for the ground states in the upper p -shell, but using higher-order two-body potentials, in combination with N 2 LO three-body forces, our predictions agree with experiment throughout the p -shell to within our combined estimated uncertainties. The uncertainties due to chiral order truncation are noticeably larger than the numerical uncertainties, but they are expected to become comparable to the numerical uncertainties at complete N 3 LO.

Lunar transfer trajectory design and the four-body problem

The existence of a ballistic trajectory from the Earth to orbit about the Moon was long considered to be impossible based on analysis of the three-body problem. In 1990 a ballistic trajectory from the Earth to lunar orbit was discovered while analyzing a plan to salvage the Muses A (Hiten) spacecraft. This trajectory utilized the Sun's gravity in conjunction with the Earth and Moon's gravity and was thus the first example of a practical four-body trajectory design. This paper presents a review of lunar transfer trajectories that go beyond three-body theory and the Jacobi integral. These include Hiten, Lunar A and the Genesis return trajectory from the vicinity of the Moon to Earth. It is shown that these trajectories may be analyzed by piecing together segments where three-body motion dominates.

Study of the p-p-K + and p-p-K - dynamics using the femtoscopy technique

The interactions of kaons (K) and antikaons ($\bar{K}$ ) with few nucleons (N) were studied so far using kaonic atom data and measurements of kaon production and interaction yields in nuclei. Some details of the three-body $\bar{K}$NN and NN dynamics are still not well understood, mainly due to the overlap with multi-nucleon interactions in nuclei. An alternative method to probe the dynamics of three-body systems with kaons is to study the final state interaction within triplet of particles emitted in pp collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, which are free from effects due to the presence of bound nucleons. This Letter reports the first femtoscopic study of p–p–K + and p–p–K - correlations measured in high-multiplicity pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV by the ALICE Collaboration. The analysis shows that the measured p–p–K + and p–p–K - correlation functions can be interpreted in terms of pairwise interactions in the triplets, indicating that the dynamics of such systems is dominated by the two-body interactions without significant contributions from three-body effects or bound states.

Vertical Lift Planetary Aerial Vehicles: Three Planetary Bodies and Four Conceptual Design Cases

NASA Ames Research Center has been studying the feasibility of vertical lift aerial vehicles to support planetary science and exploration missions. Besides Earth, it appears that there are three planetary bodies within our solar system where vertical flight might not only be theoretically feasible, but would also have unique mission capabilities that no other platform (ground-based, aerial, or orbital) could provide. Several vertical lift vehicle configurations might be applicable for planetary science missions. This paper presents a few representative conceptual design cases and the design challenges inherent in their development. Finally, more detailed comments are directed to the issues inherent in developing a NASA Mars Scout mission employing the use of a Martian autonomous rotorcraft.

Coupled-channel approach to isotensor π π π scattering from lattice QCD

The quest to understand three-body dynamics from first-principle QCD includes the study of nonresonant and resonant systems. The isospin I = 2 system is of particular interest having no three-body resonance but featuring a resonance in a subchannel, while also being a coupled-channel problem. In this study, we calculate the finite-volume spectrum from lattice QCD at two different pion masses, map the amplitude to the infinite volume through a generalized Finite-Volume Unitarity three-body quantization condition, investigate the limit of a narrow ρ , and compare with an effective Lagrangian prediction at leading order. Chiral extrapolations between different pion masses are performed.

Effective mass of α-cluster in 12C nucleus

Based on the effective-mass concept, we perform the Faddeev calculations for a low-lying spectrum of 3[Formula: see text] states in [Formula: see text]C nucleus. A three-body potential is used to describe the known breaking of the 3[Formula: see text]-cluster structure in the nucleus. We show that the contribution of the three-body potential to the Hamiltonian can be compensated by increasing/decreasing the [Formula: see text]-particle free mass. The effective-mass values are adjusted to reproduce the experimental data for the [Formula: see text]C nucleus. The energy dependence of the effective mass and the correlation to a three-body potential are discussed. We show that the coupling between the [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]) levels forms a specific picture of anti-crossing on the energy/effective-mass plane.

Effect of geometry variations on lee-surface vortex-induced heating for flat-bottom three-dimensional bodies at Mach 6

Studies have shown that vortices can produce relatively severe heating on the leeward surfaces of conceptual hypersonic vehicles and that surface geometry can strongly influence this vortex-induced heating. Results which show the effects of systematic geometry variations on the vortex-induced lee-surface heating on simple flat-bottom three-dimensional bodies at angles of attack of 20 deg and 40 deg are presented. The tests were conducted at a free-stream Mach number of 6 and at a Reynolds number of 1.71 x 10 to the 7th power per meter.
