Automatic vehicle monitoring systems study. Report of phase O. Volume 2: Problem definition and derivation of AVM system selection techniques

A set of planning guidelines is presented to help law enforcement agencies and vehicle fleet operators decide which automatic vehicle monitoring (AVM) system could best meet their performance requirements. Improvements in emergency response times and resultant cost benefits obtainable with various operational and planned AVM systems may be synthesized and simulated by means of special computer programs for model city parameters applicable to small, medium and large urban areas. Design characteristics of various AVM systems and the implementation requirements are illustrated and cost estimated for the vehicles, the fixed sites and the base equipments. Vehicle location accuracies for different RF links and polling intervals are analyzed. Actual applications and coverage data are tabulated for seven cities whose police departments actively cooperated in the study.

Calibration of electron-energy spectrometers

Relative photoionization cross-sections of strong peaks in the He(I) photoelectron spectra of N2, CO, CO2, and O2 are tabulated. These data have been measured with an electron energy analyzer whose relative luminosity has been calibrated to an accuracy of + or - 5%. Thus, the tables will be useful for calibrating the transmission of other analyzers for electron energies below 9 eV. Correction for angular distribution effects is discussed.

Preliminary findings of the Viking gas exchange experiment and a model for Martian surface chemistry

Earlier results reported from the Viking Lander-1 experiment are reexamined and interpreted in terms of a model of the Martian soil surface morphology and chemistry. Major events in the gas exchange experiment (GEX) first cycle are tabulated and data are presented on the sample processing and transport environments experienced by the soil samples. Oxygen and CO2 evolved from humidified Martian soil in GEX and slight changes in N2 present are investigated. A soil model involving iron oxide coating on silicate material is entertained to yield a mechanistic explanation of the experimental findings, and invocation of biotic processes is eschewed.

Measurements in the turbulent boundary layer at constant pressure in subsonic and supersonic flow. Part 1: Mean flow

Experiments were carried out to test the accuracy of laser Doppler instrumentation for measurement of Reynolds stresses in turbulent boundary layers in supersonic flow. Two facilities were used to study flow at constant pressure. In one facility, data were obtained on a flat plate at M sub e = 0.1, with Re theta up to 8,000. In the other, data were obtained on an adiabatic nozzle wall at M sub e = 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.3, and 2.2, with Re theta = 23,000 and 40,000. The mean flow as observed using Pitot tube, Preston tube, and floating element instrumentation is described. Emphasis is on the use of similarity laws with Van Driest scaling and on the inference of the shearing stress profile and the normal velocity component from the equations of mean motion. The experimental data are tabulated.

The M-15-aircraft (samolot M-15)

The M-15 is an all-metal, semimonocoque, twin-tail-boom sesquiplane aircraft designed exclusively for agricultural support operations involving slow low-level flight. It is powered by a single Al-25 bypass turbojet engine used in the Yak-40 aircraft. Tanks for spraying chemicals are mounted between the lower and upper wings. Dimensions, weights, and performance data are tabulated.

Flight through thunderstorm outflows

Computer simulation of aircraft landing through thunderstorm gust fronts is carried out. The two-dimensional, nonlinear equations or aircraft motion containing all wind shear terms are solved numerically. The gust front spatial wind field inputs are provided in the form of tabulated experimental data which are coupled with a computer table lookup routine to provide the required wind components and shear at any given position within an approximate 500 m by 1 km vertical plane. The aircraft is considered to enter the wind field at a specified position under trimmed conditions. Both fixed control and automatic control landings are simulated. Flight paths, as well as control inputs necessary to maintain specified trajectories, are presented and discussed for aircraft having characteristics of a DC-8, B-747, augmentor-wing STOL, and a DHC-6.

New atomic data for Fe/+19/

New atomic data are tabulated for Fe(+19). The electron collision strengths are calculated using the 'distorted wave' approximation and results are presented for several energies of the exciting electron. The populations of the ground levels are calculated as a function of electron density under conditions appropriate to solar flares and tokamak plasmas. Theoretical intensity ratios are tabulated for the UV lines.

A preliminary 'test case' manufacturing sequence for 50 cents/watt solar photovoltaic modules in 1986

The paper describes a 'test case' manufacturing process sequence for solar photovoltaic modules which will cost 50 cents/watt in 1986. The process, which starts with the purification of silicon grown into 75-mm-wide thin ribbons, is discussed, and the plant layout is depicted; each department is sized to produce 250 MW of modules/per year. The cost of this process sequence is compared to present technology at various companies showing considerable spread for each process; data are tabulated in a composite state-of-the-art cell processing cost summary for these processes.

Heat Pipe Design Handbook: Volume II

This volume consists of a discussion of Fluid Properties (Chapter 1) and a description of the available Heat Pipe Computer Codes (Chapter 2). Appendix A contains appropriate International Scientific Units (SI) and Conversion Factors. The Users Manual for the Heat Pipe Fluid Properties Program (HPF) which is used to generate the fluid property data is presented in Appendix B. Tabulated fluid property data are listed in Appendix C.
