Photoemf in cadmium sulfide

Theoretical and experimental investigations on CdS single crystals and CuxS:CdS photovoltaic cells prepared from CdS single crystals by a chemical-dip procedure are described. The studies are aimed at clarifying cell mechanisms which affect key cell properties (efficiency, reliability, and lifetime) by examining the properties of intrinsic and extrinsic defects in the junction and surface regions and their effects on carrier transport through these regions. The experimental research described includes studies of thermal, infrared, and field quenching of acceptor-doped CdS crystals; investigation of optical and electrical properties of CuxS:CdS photovoltaic cells (current-voltage characteristics, spectral distribution of photocurrent and photovoltage) and the dependence of these properties on temperature and light intensity; measurement of changes, as a result of heat treatment in ultrahigh vacuum, in the spectral distribution of photoconductivity at room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature, the luminescence spectrum at liquid nitrogen temperature, and the thermally stimulated current curves of CdS crystals; determination of the effect of irradiation with 150 keV (maximum) X-rays on the spectral distribution of photoconductivity and thermally-stimulated current of CdS crystals; and studies of the effect of growth conditions on the photoconductive properties of CdS crystals.

Fast metastable fragments produced by dissociative excitation of carbonyl sulfide

Dissociative excitation of OCS by electron impact has been studied using the method of translational spectroscopy. Time-of-flight distributions and excitation functions of the fast metastable fragments have been measured. The results are compared with similar measurements on CO2 and show that a variety of metastable fragments including CO(a 3Pi), S(5S), O(5S) as well as long-lived high-lying atomic and molecular Rydberg fragments can contribute to dissociation.

Application of satellite photographic and MSS data to selected geologic and natural resource problems in Pennsylvania. 1: Lineaments and mineral occurrences in Pennsylvania. 2: Relation of lineaments to sulfide deposits: Bald Eagle Mountain, Centre County, Pennsylvania. 3: Comparison of Skylab and LANDSAT lineaments with joint orientations in north central Pennsylvania

Those metallic mineral occurrences in Pennsylvania are reported which lie near lineaments mapped from LANDSAT-1 satellite imagery and verified from Skylab photography where available. The lineaments were categorized by degree of expression and type of expression; the mineral occurrences were classified by host rock age, mineralization type, and value. The accompanying tables and figure document the mineral occurrences geographically associated with lineaments and serve as a base for a mineral exploration model.

Cadmium sulfide solar cells

Development, fabrication and applications of CdS solar cells are reviewed in detail. The suitability of CdS cells for large solar panels and microcircuitry, and their low cost, are emphasized. Developments are reviewed by manufacturer-developer. Vapor phase deposition of thin-film solar cells, doping and co-evaporation, sputtering, chemical spray, and sintered layers are reviewed, in addition to spray deposition, monograin layer structures, and silk screening. Formation of junctions by electroplating, evaporation, brushing, CuCl dip, and chemiplating are discussed, along with counterelectrode fabrication, VPD film structures, the Cu2S barrier layer, and various photovoltaic effects (contact photovoltage, light intensity variation, optical enhancement), and various other CdS topics.

Absolute rate of the reaction of O/3-P/ with hydrogen sulfide over the temperature range 263 to 495 K

The technique of flash photolysis coupled with time resolved detection of O via resonance fluorescence has been used to obtain rate constants for the reaction of O(3-P) with H2S at temperatures from 263 to 495 K and at pressures in the range 10-400 torr. Under conditions where secondary reactions are avoided, the measured rate constants for the primary step obey the Arrhenius equation k = (7.24 plus or minus 1.07) x 10 to the -12th exp(-3300 plus or minus 100/1.987 T) cu cm/molecules/s. Experiments with D2S show that the reaction exhibits a primary isotope effect, in support of a hydrogen abstraction mechanism.

The development of a potassium-sulfide glass fiber cell and studies on impurities in alkali metal-sulfur cells

Potassium sulfur rechargeable cells, having as the electrolyte the thin walls of hollow glass fibers made from permeable glass, were developed. The cells had short lives, probably due to the construction materials and impurities in the potassium. The effect of the impurities in the analogous NA-S system was studied. Calcium, potassium, and NaOH/oxide impurities caused increased resistance or corrosion of the glass fibers. For long lived cell operation, the Na must contain less than 1 ppm Ca and less than a few ppm of hydroxide/oxide. Up to 150 ppm K can be tolerated. After purification of the Na anolyte, cell lifetimes in excess of 1000 deep charge-discharge cycles or over 8 months on continuous cycling at 10-30 percent depth of discharge were obtained.

Cubanite - A new sulfide phase in CI meteorites

Cubanite (CuFe2S3) previously unobserved in meteorites, has been discovered in two carbonaceous chondrites, Orgueil and Alais. The association of this mineral with low-copper pyrrhotite suggests that it formed in a low-temperature environment on the meteorite parent body.

Study of the effects of gaseous environments on sulfidation attack of superalloys

Studies were conducted to examine the effect of the gaseous corrodents NaCl, HCl, and NaOH on the high temperature oxidation and Na2SO4-induced corrosion behavior of the alumina former NiAl, the chromia former Ni-25 wt.% Cr, elemental Cr, and the superalloy B-1900. Experiments were conducted at 900 and 1050 C in air in the presence and absence of the gaseous corrodents. Effects involving both reaction rates and microstructural changes in oxide morphology were observed due to the presence of these corrodents at levels anticipated to be present in operating industrial and marine gas turbines. The effect of gaseous NaCl, HCl, and possibly NaOH on NiAl in simple oxidation was to remove aluminum from below the protective alumina layer and to simultaneously weaken the adherence of the protective alumina oxide scale to the substrate. The aluminum removed from below the oxide scale was redeposited on its surface as alpha-Al2O3 whiskers. With respect to the chromia formers, gaseous NaCl and HCl promoted breakaway oxidation kinetics and changes in the microstructures of the oxide scales.
