Measuring thermomechanical response of large-format printed polymer composite structures via digital image correlation

Large-format additive manufacturing (LFAM) is a branch of additive manufacturing (AM) research with the ability to create large structures typically measuring several meters in scale. LFAM is advantageous for tooling applications, not only because it offers the ability to create complex geometries not easily made using subtractive manufacturing processes, but the cost savings of pelletized feedstock used by these systems result in larger parts printed at faster speeds than traditional AM systems. Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) is a commonly used feedstock material in LFAM structures because it reduces the distortion experienced during printing. However, FRP introduces highly anisotropic thermomechanical properties and contributes to a nonhomogeneous microstructure that can result in critical distortion of dimensions during tooling. Measuring the global thermomechanical response of LFAM structures requires a more representative method that accounts for not only anisotropic properties but also the nonhomogeneous nature of the final part. This is where traditional techniques to measure thermomechanical response, such as thermomechanical analysis (TMA), fall short as they assume homogeneity. This study evaluated the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of LFAM structures as measured by TMA as compared to a novel digital image correlation oven (DIC Oven) system. The LFAM structures were made from 20 % by weight carbon fiber reinforced acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (CF-ABS). TMA measurements showed significant variations in CTE across a single LFAM bead, confirming the need for a global technique that captures overall thermomechanical response. The CTE values measured using the DIC Oven compared well to average TMA values obtained from localized measurements across the sample. The DIC Oven was also used to quantify the effects of different layer orientations on thermomechanical properties, which cannot be easily captured using TMA. A predictive model was also developed by using localized TMA values across an LFAM bead to predict the overall thermomechanical response of an LFAM structure.

Structural basis of a shared antibody response to SARS-CoV-2

Molecular understanding of neutralizing antibody responses to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) could accelerate vaccine design and drug discovery. We analyzed 294 anti–SARS-CoV-2 antibodies and found that immunoglobulin G heavy-chain variable region 3-53 (IGHV3-53) is the most frequently used IGHV gene for targeting the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the spike protein. Co-crystal structures of two IGHV3-53–neutralizing antibodies with RBD, with or without Fab CR3022, at 2.33- to 3.20-angstrom resolution revealed that the germline-encoded residues dominate recognition of the angiotensin I converting enzyme 2 (ACE2)–binding site. This binding mode limits the IGHV3-53 antibodies to short complementarity-determining region H3 loops but accommodates light-chain diversity. These IGHV3-53 antibodies show minimal affinity maturation and high potency, which is promising for vaccine design. Knowledge of these structural motifs and binding mode should facilitate the design of antigens that elicit this type of neutralizing response.

Probing correlated states with plasmons

Understanding the nature of strongly correlated states in flat-band materials (such as moiré heterostructures) is at the forefront of both experimental and theoretical pursuits. While magnetotransport, scanning probe, and optical techniques are often very successful in investigating the properties of the underlying order, the exact nature of the ground state often remains unknown. Here, we propose to leverage strong light-matter coupling present in the flat-band systems to gain insight through dynamical dielectric response into the structure of the many-body ground state. We argue that because of the enlargement of the effective lattice of the system arising from correlations, conventional long-range plasmon becomes “folded” to yield a multiband plasmon spectrum. We detail several mechanisms through which the structure of the plasmon spectrum and that of the dynamical dielectric response is susceptible to the underlying order, revealing valued insights such as the interaction-driven band gaps, spin-structure, and the order periodicity.

Influence of topology optimization parameters on the mechanical response of an additively manufactured test structure

Topology Optimization (TO) determines a material distribution within a domain under given conditions and design constraints, and generally generates complex geometries as a result. Complementary to TO, Additive Manufacturing (AM) offers the ability to fabricate complex geometries which may be difficult to manufacture using traditional techniques such as milling. AM has been used in multiple industries including the medical devices area. Hence, TO may be used to create patient-matched devices where the mechanical response is catered to a particular patient. Furthermore, during a medical device regulatory 510(k) pathway, demonstrating that worst-cases are known and tested is critical to the review process. Using TO and AM to predict worst-case designs for subsequent performance testing may be challenging and does not appear to have been thoroughly explored. Investigating the effects of TO input parameters when AM is employed may be the first step in determining the feasibility of predicting these worst-cases.

The effects of nanoscale confinement on the behavior of metal laminates

By reducing the layer thickness, h, in metal multilayers from micrometer- to nanometer-levels, scale-dependent transitions in behavior are observed. The role of interface properties in these transitions has been extensively investigated. However, reducing h to the nanoscale regime also imposes a physical geometric confinement on defect-related processes occurring within the layers, an effect that is relatively less explored. Herein, we present illustrative examples of the influence of nanoconfinement on the strength, structure, and radiation response of multilayers. These examples show that nanoconfinement and interface structure and topology act cooperatively in the nanoscale limit, affecting behaviors that cannot be explained based on either factor alone.

Accelerating Structure–Property Relationship Discovery with Multimodal Machine Learning and Self-Driving Microscopy

Microscopy combined with local spectroscopy is widely used to correlate nanoscale structure with functional properties in materials, but conventional measurements rely heavily on human-selected sampling locations and predefined targets, limiting data set diversity and the potential for discovery. Here, we present a framework that integrates autonomous microscopy with dual-novelty deep kernel learning (DN-DKL) for adaptive data acquisition and a dual variational autoencoder (VAE) for representation learning. DN-DKL actively guides the microscopy toward structurally and spectroscopically novel regions, enabling efficient collection of large spectral data sets. Dual-VAE embeds local structures and spectroscopic responses into a shared latent manifold that serves as a structure–property relationship map. We applied this framework for the investigation of halide perovskite films by using conductive atomic force microscopy. The results reveal distinct hysteresis behaviors that are linked to specific nanoscale structural motifs, including grain boundary junction points that show hysteresis under different bias conditions and asymmetric grain boundaries that suppress the charge transport. This framework establishes a general strategy that leverages the complementary strengths of self-driving microscopy, machine learning, and human expertise to accelerate scientific discovery in functional materials.

Predictive multiscale modeling for Unidirectional Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers

This paper presents a predictive multiscale modeling scheme for Unidirectional (UD) Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP). A bottom-up modeling procedure is discussed for predicting the performance of UD structures. UD material responses are computed from high fidelity Representative Volume Elements (RVEs). A data-driven Reduced Order Modeling approach compresses RVEs into Reduced Order Models so material responses can be computed in a concurrent fashion along with the structural level simulation. The approach presented in this paper is validated against experimental data and is believed to provide design guidance for future fiber reinforced polymers development.

Trapping of spermine, Kukoamine A, and polyamine toxin blockers in GluK2 kainate receptor channels

Abstract Kainate receptors (KARs) are a subtype of ionotropic glutamate receptor (iGluR) channels, a superfamily of ligand-gated ion channels which mediate the majority of excitatory neurotransmission in the central nervous system. KARs modulate neuronal circuits and plasticity during development and are implicated in neurological disorders, including epilepsy, depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, and autism. Calcium-permeable KARs undergo ion channel block, but the therapeutic potential of channel blockers remains underdeveloped, mainly due to limited structural knowledge. Here, we present closed-state structures of GluK2 KAR homotetramers in complex with ion channel blockers NpTx-8, PhTx-74, Kukoamine A, and spermine. We find that blockers reside inside the GluK2 ion channel pore, intracellular to the closed M3 helix bundle-crossing gate, with their hydrophobic heads filling the central cavity and positively charged polyamine tails spanning the selectivity filter. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of our structures illuminate interactions responsible for different affinity and binding poses of the blockers. Our structures elucidate the trapping mechanism of KAR channel block and provide a template for designing new blockers that can selectively target calcium-permeable KARs in neuropathologies.

Anomalies in the electromagnetic response and peculiarities of the domain structure in the magnetic Weyl semimetal Co 3⁢ Sn 2 ⁢S 2

In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of magnetic properties of Co 3 ⁢Sn 2 ⁢S 2 (CoSnS) crystals using macroscopic characterization and observations of the domain structure (DS) in a wide range of easy- and hard-axis fields (𝐻) and temperatures (𝑇). From macroscopic measurements, we derive temperature dependences of the basic magnetic parameters of the material [saturation magnetization 𝑀 𝑠 ⁡(𝑇), uniaxial anisotropy constant 𝐾⁡(𝑇), and exchange stiffness 𝐴⁡(𝑇)] and, based on them, calculate the thermodynamic magnetization 𝑀⁡(𝐻,𝑇) curves and DS parameters for pinning-free samples. We find important qualitative and quantitative differences between the theory and experiment defined by the efficient pinning of domain walls (DWs) in our samples. It turns out that, already at temperatures close to the ferromagnetic transition 𝑇 𝑐 , the DW dynamics falls into the heavy creep regime, resulting in a strong deferral of the DS adjustment into the equilibrium state. Here, we suggest that specific magnetic defects, responsible for pinning and causing field-tuned reproducible domain nucleation patterns observed in our high-quality samples, are pointlike. Recently found magnetic polarons formed around vacancies and impurities, which carry strong diamagnetic moments of spin-orbit nature and are intrinsic for CoSnS and expected in other Weyl semimetals, are a possible source of pinning yielding peculiar 𝑀⁡(𝐻,𝑇) response of CoSnS.

Simulation of a PCM Integrated Heat Pump Using Time-of-Use Utility Structure based Control Strategy for Demand Response

To mitigate the variation in demand on the electric grid, thermal energy storage (TES) is an alternative to electric batteries and constructing new peaking power plants. The aggressive carbon reduction goals of the United States are accelerating the electrification of building equipment. If space heating and cooling in the US were electrified using conventional heat pump technologies, the winter electric grid peak would approximately double. Integrating TES with heat pump (HP) enables electrification of space cooling and heating devices without overtaxing the grid. This paper evaluates the benefits of a novel phase change material (PCM) integrated heat pump configuration via simulation. A one-dimensional PCM heat exchanger model which discretizes the PCM tank and refrigerant tubes into small control volumes is developed. Each control volume can have different PCM temperatures, PCM properties, and heat transfer coefficients. The PCM tank is charged by a wrapped tank condenser and discharged by an internal refrigerant coil. The PCM heat exchanger model is integrated into DOE/ORNL Heat Pump Design Model for heat pump system simulation. To demonstrate the performance of the PCM integrated heat pump, a case study in Chicago was performed. A Time-of-Use utility structure-based control strategy is implemented to schedule the PCM tank charging and discharging mode switching. Compared with a conventional electric heat pump, the PCM integrated heat pump shows superior performance on load shifting and utility cost reduction. As a result, the proposed system demonstrates 24.6% utility saving for cooling application and 25.8% utility saving for heating application.

Disruption of histone acetylation homeostasis reveals multilayered chromatin regulation for transcriptional resiliency

Background Epigenetic modifications, nucleosome occupancy, and three-dimensional chromatin architecture collectively create a multi-layered, highly interactive regulatory system for controlling genomic functionality. Dysregulation of epigenetic processes leads to a plethora of abnormalities including disease states. Therapies focused on epigenetic modulation can alter gene expression to correct dysfunction, though the perpetuation of these states and the relationships among chromatin regulatory layers is not well understood. Results Here, we investigated global and local chromatin structural and functional responses after acute histone deacetylase inhibitor treatment (suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid) in lung cancer cells across time. Treatment substantially increased global histone acetylation resulting in a pervasive but not distinctive signature. The spread of acetylation did not significantly impact global chromatin accessibility, and nucleosome remodeling largely occurred at finer scales in functionally relevant genomic regions. Indeed, both H 3 K 4 trimethylation, a mark of active transcription, and gene expression changes were altered in a controlled locus-specific manner, suggesting aberrant acetylation indirectly leads to balanced and bidirectional gene expression profiles from tighter regulation of other chromatin features. HDACi treatment induced (13%) genomic rearrangement in chromatin compartmentalization and moderate weakening of topologically associating domains. Conclusions Continuous wavelet analysis of these features demonstrates that scale-dependent, locus-specific factors influence the relationship between chromatin architecture and functional output, suggesting that regulation of transcription and nucleosome remodeling is not entirely (nor linearly) dependent upon large scale compartment exchange. Structural and functional responses are most pronounced early after treatment with partial persistence of differential local chromatin features and expression later in time; this highlights the plasticity of chromatin regulation, which may have implications for the efficacy of epigenetic treatments. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of multi-layered regulation of transcription: in resilient systems, disruption of one chromatin feature does not distort the regulation of other features in supporting a transcriptional program that allows for survival.

Modeling and characterizing the elastodynamic response of octet-truss lattice structures using resonance techniques

Characterization of additively manufactured materials and structures is an ongoing effort for the advanced manufacturing community. This article will investigate an approach using resonant spectral ultrasound (RUS) to measure the effective elastic constants of an Octet Truss lattice and apply the results to continuum bases models representing the lattice regions in different structures. The study is focused on simple lattices structures fabricated from Ti5553 using a laser powder bed fusion process (LBPF). Solid and lattice samples are measured to determine RUS estimates for the elastic properties of the bulk material and the effective elastic properties of the lattice structure. The estimated elastic properties are then incorporated into 3d finite element models using a continuum approximation of the physical AM parts. Comparisons show good agreement between the experimentally measured eigen frequencies of the Ti5553 LBPF parts and the eigen frequencies calculated using the continuum approximations based on the effective RUS elastic properties. The current results suggest there is additional physics and geometrical effects that are accounted for in the RUS continuum approximation of the lattice that are not captured in the full 3d finite element model of the parts utilizing only the base material properties.

Mapping Structure and Rheology of pH-Responsive Resins for Low-VOC Coatings

In recent years, the paint and coatings industry has shifted away from traditional resin formulations that require high concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to achieve the desired rheological performance and sustainability targets. One approach to eliminate or reduce VOCs in paint and coating formulations while maintaining the final performance is to disperse stimuli-responsive polymer latex particles in water. The chemistry and architecture of these particles have been engineered such that the suspension rheology changes in response to the pH changes. The particles can also be swollen with organic solvents to illicit similar rheological changes. To understand how the particle microstructure influences the observed macroscopic properties, we use small-angle neutron scattering and dynamic light scattering to determine that these particles consist of a cross-linked core with long polymer tails that extend into the dispersing medium. Carboxylic acid groups present on the tails deprotonate with increasing pH, and the extension of the polymer chain due to charge repulsion increases the hydrodynamic drag on the particle. Here we find that adjusting the pH alone has a much more significant effect on the shear dependence of the viscosity of the studied resin than adding organic solvent alone. We also find that this resin architecture is more responsive per mole of pH-responsive group than other architectures of pH-responsive latex particles in the literature.

Structure Tuning, Strong Second Harmonic Generation Response, and High Optical Stability of the Polar Semiconductors Na 1- x K x AsQ 2

We report the mixed cation compounds Na 1-x K x AsSe 2 (x = 0.8, 0.65, 0.5) and Na 0.1 K 0.9 AsS 2 crystallize in the polar noncentrosymmetric space group Cc. The AAsQ(2) (A = alkali metals, Q = S, Se) family features one-dimensional (1D) 1 / ∞ [AQ 2 - ] chains comprising corner-sharing pyramidal AQ 3 units in which the packing of these chains is dependent on the alkali metals. The parallel 1 / ∞ [AQ(2) - ] chains interact via short As ∙∙∙Se contacts, which increase in length when the fraction of K atoms is increased. The increase in the As ∙∙∙Se interchain distance increases the band gap from 1.75 eV in γ-NaAsSe 2 to 2.01 eV in Na 0.35 K 0.65 AsSe 2 , 2.07 eV in Na 0.2 K 0.8 AsSe 2 , and 2.18 eV in Na 0.1 K 0.9 AsS 2 . The Na 1-x K x AsSe 2 (x = 0.8, 0.65) compounds melt congruently at approximately 316 °C. Wavelength-dependent second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements on powder samples of Na 1-x K x AsSe 2 (x = 0.8, 0.65, 0.5) and Na 0.1 K 0.9 AsS 2 suggest that Na 0.2 K 0.8 AsSe 2 and Na 0.1 K 0.9 AsS 2 have the highest SHG response and exhibit significantly higher laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDTs). Theoretical SHG calculations on Na 0.5 K 0.5 AsSe 2 confirm its SHG response with the highest value of d 33 = 22.5 pm/V χ 333 (2) = 45.0 pm/V). The effective nonlinearity for a randomly oriented powder is calculated to be d eff = 18.9 pm/V χ eff (2) = 37.8 pm/V), which is consistent with the experimentally obtained value of d eff = 16.5 pm/V χ eff (2) = 33.0 pm/V). Three-photon absorption is the dominant mechanism for the optical breakdown of the compounds under intense excitation at 1580 nm, with Na 0.2 K 0.8 AsSe 2 exhibiting the highest stability.
