In situ temperature measurements in sooting methane/air flames using synchrotron x-ray fluorescence of seeded krypton atoms

Synchrotron x-ray fluorescence has been used to measure temperatures in optically dense gases where traditional methods would fail. These data provide a benchmark for stringent tests of computational fluid dynamics models for complex systems where physical and chemical processes are intimately linked. The experiments measured krypton number densities in a sooting, atmospheric pressure, nonpremixed coflow flame that is widely used in combustion research. The experiments not only form targets for the models, but the simulations also identify potential sources of uncertainties in the measurements, allowing for future improvements.

Stable Lithium Plating in “Lithium Metal-Free” Solid-State Batteries Enabled by Seeded Lithium Nucleation

In the “Li 0 -free” architecture, cells are manufactured with a bare anode current collector and the Li metal anode is plated in situ during the first charging step. While this architecture has many attractive qualities from manufacturing and energy density perspectives, stable Li plating in solid-state “Li 0 -free” cells can be challenging. It is generally accepted that the Li overpotential affects Li homogeneity in “Li 0 -free” cells. We demonstrate that the nucleation overpotential for Li plating in solid-state “Li 0 -free” cells using commercial current collectors can be eliminated by introducing metal clusters that guide Li nucleation. Au is used as model alloying metal cluster. Here, we demonstrate stable Li plating with thickness 16.5 μ m (3.3 mAh cm −2 ) in oxide solid-state electrolyte “Li 0 -free” cells enabled by Au metal clusters. It is shown that 97% of the in situ plated Li can be reversibly stripped at 60 °C and 2.5 MPa. Conversely, Au interlayers which are flat and continuous instead of clustered in morphology consistently showed short-circuiting during in situ Li plating, limiting Li electrodeposition to <0.1 mAh cm −2 . These results can help guide future studies of Li nucleation and growth at solid/solid interfaces, as well as offer alternative manufacturing pathways for “Li 0 -free” solid-state batteries.

SEED: Semantic Energy Exploration and Discovery

The Bioenergy Knowledge Discovery Framework (KDF) hosts a vast repository of specialized data, yet traditional keyword-based search methods often struggle to provide direct answers, requiring significant domain expertise and manual effort to filter through raw documents. To overcome these barriers, this software introduces a semantic search engine that enables both specialists and non-specialists to query the KDF using natural language. By shifting from rigid keyword matching to intent-based retrieval, the tool automatically identifies and ranks the most relevant sources within the database. The system functions by processing natural language queries to extract the most pertinent information, delivering an AI-generated plain-language summary alongside exact supporting quotes from retrieved documents. This integrated approach provides users with immediate, evidence-based answers while eliminating the need for exhaustive manual review. By surfacing direct insights and contextual evidence, the software enhances the usability of existing KDF resources and democratizes access to complex bioenergy data. Ultimately, this semantic search solution accelerates the discovery process and supports faster, more informed decision-making across the bioenergy sector.

Seeded stimulated x-ray emission at 5.9 keV: erratum

We recently identified two labeling-related mistakes in Optica 10 , 513 ( 2023 ) OPTIC8 2334-2536 10.1364/OPTICA.485989 . The first mistake concerns the labeling of the focus used during one scan. The second mistake concerns the labeling of a filter used in some runs to protect the detector. These mistakes do not affect the overall findings and conclusions in our paper, but some numbers, text, and figures are slightly affected by it. These items have been corrected and are listed below. Finally, a missing DOE award number (DE-SC0023270) has been added below.

Fluorinated Covalent Organic Frameworks: A Novel Pathway to Enhance Hydrogen Sorption and Control Isosteric Heats of Adsorption; HyMARC Seed Project Final Report

Organic framework materials, as a unique sub-class of carbon-based sorbents, have gained increasing attention for promising attributes toward gas storage. Calculations of the hydrogen capacity of optimized frameworks show potential to achieve greater than 60 g/L storage of hydrogen, placing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and COFs near the top of the class of porous materials. However, at the ensemble level, poor stacking creates a quasi-amorphous material with low structural integrity and low effective surface area. The chemical versatility of COFs allows for additional methods for producing long-range order that specifically target the inter-layer interactions in COFs but that leave key pore-accessible linker sites open. These modifications (either during synthesis or post-synthetic) enable a host of strategies to both improve crystalline order for more stable and higher surface, as well as add metals with open coordination for enhanced H 2 binding enthalpy.
