PC-RPL: Joint Control of Routing Topology and Transmission Power in Real Low-Power and Lossy Networks

We present PC-RPL , a transmission power-controlled IPv6 routing protocol for low-power and lossy wireless networks that significantly improves the end-to-end packet delivery performance under heavy traffic compared to the standard RPL. We show through actual design, implementation, and experiments that a multihop wireless network can achieve better throughput and routing stability when transmission power and routing topology are “jointly and adaptively” controlled. Our experiments show that the predominant “fixed and uniform” transmission power strategy with “link quality and hop distance”–based routing topology construction (i.e., RPL) loses significant bandwidth due to hidden terminal and load imbalance problems. We design an adaptive and distributed control mechanism for transmission power and routing topology, named PC-RPL , on top of the standard RPL routing protocol for hidden terminal mitigation and load balancing. We implement PC-RPL on real embedded devices and evaluate its performance on a 49-node multihop testbed. PC-RPL reduces total end-to-end packet losses by approximately sevenfold without increasing hop distance compared to RPL with the highest transmission power, resulting in 17% improvement in aggregate bandwidth and 64% improvement for the worst-case node by successfully alleviating both hidden terminal and load imbalance problems.

A Preliminary Analysis of the Flying Qualities of the Consolidated Vultee MX-813 Delta-Wing Airplane Configuration at Transonic and Low Supersonic Speeds as Determined from Flights of Rocket-Powered Models

A preliminary analysis of the flying qualities of the Consolidated Vultee MX-813 delta-wing airplane configuration has been made based on the results obtained from the first two 1/8 scale models flown at the NACA Pilotless Aircraft Research Station, Wallop's Island, VA. The Mach number range covered in the tests was from 0.9 to 1.2. The analysis indicates adequate elevator control for trim in level flight over the speed range investigated. Through the transonic range there is a mild trim change with a slight tucking-under tendency. The elevator control effectiveness in the supersonic range is reduced to about one-half the subsonic value although sufficient control for maneuvering is available as indicated by the fact that 10 deg elevator deflection produced 5g acceleration at Mach number of 1.2 at 40,000 feet. The elevator control forces are high and indicate the power required of the boost system. The damping. of the short-period oscillation is adequate at sea-level but is reduced at 40,000 feet. The directional stability appears adequate for the speed range and angles of attack covered.

The power of cross-functional teams in driving total quality

Garrett Canada, a Division of Allied-Signal Aerospace Canada, has been a member of the Canadian aerospace industry for 40 years. Although Garrett Canada has always been a profitable division with a solid market share, the changing and turbulent business environment and globalization of the aerospace industry has created new demands and challenges. The marketplace is demanding faster introduction of new products, as well as shorter leadtimes for repairs and spares. It was recognized that reducing cycle times for new products and for ongoing production would not only satisfy our customers, it would also enhance our business performance through reduced inventories, lower past due, and more responsiveness to change. It was evident that drastic function changes were required if we were to maintain our position as a premier aerospace supplier. The challenge was to convert a stable, somewhat slow-paced work environment with strong functional boundaries into a boundaryless world class team functioning in a total quality environment and focused on customer satisfaction. Complete and uncompromised customer satisfaction has become our driving force, with Total Quality being our engine to continuously improve our processes and increase our speed. The way in which this transition has been brought about is the subject of this presentation.

Optical Amplifier for Space Applications

We describe an open multipass optical amplifier designed to amplify a sampled region of an optical wavefront to kilowatt average power with low optical phase distortion. The overall goal is to amplify optical fields in a segmented, but phase coherent manner, so as to achieve high average power optical fields with high quality phase coherence over the large apertures needed for transmission of space solar power.

Grid Edge Waveform Analytics Framework for Event Detection and Classification

This paper provides a grid edge waveform analytics framework for power system event detection and classification in the local as well as in the wide area. This framework overviews data excellence for event detection and classification. The data excellence describes the data acquisition process and requirements, data processing, data quality, and data integrity. Power system event detection in the local area based on different features such as energy-based, cyclostationary approach, template matching, and wavelet transform are also discussed. Furthermore, local area event detection and classification using approaches such as statistical, signal processing, artificial intelligence, and hybrid are also discussed. Moreover, an overview of wide-area event detection and classification along with several other aspects such as wide-area events, wide-area event detection approaches, event location and system performance, event pattern recognition, inter-area oscillation, and wide-area frequency response under variable deployment of inverter-based resources are also provided. The proposed framework is the first step toward the goal of developing appropriate tools and methodologies to detect and classify local as well as wide-area events using waveform analytics. The appropriate event detection and classification framework development is especially important now as more and more grid edge devices with communication capabilities are being deployed in the modern power grid than ever before.

Control design for future agile fighters

The CRAFT control design methodology is presented. CRAFT stands for the design objectives addressed, namely, Control power, Robustness, Agility, and Flying Qualities Tradeoffs. The approach combines eigenspace assignment, which allows for direct specification of eigenvalues and eigenvectors, and a graphical approach for representing control design metrics that captures numerous design goals in one composite illustration. The methodology makes use of control design metrics from four design objective areas, namely, control power, robustness, agility, and flying qualities. An example of the CRAFT methodology as well as associated design issues are presented.

Two dimensional thermal and charge mapping of power thyristors

The two dimensional static and dynamic current density distributions within the junction of semiconductor power switching devices and in particular the thyristors were obtained. A method for mapping the thermal profile of the device junctions with fine resolution using an infrared beam and measuring the attenuation through the device as a function of temperature were developed. The results obtained are useful in the design and quality control of high power semiconductor switching devices.

Control Algorithms Charge Batteries Faster

On March 29, 2011, NASA s Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft beamed a milestone image to Earth: the first photo of Mercury taken from orbit around the solar system s innermost planet. (MESSENGER is also the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury.) Like most of NASA s deep space probes, MESSENGER is enabled by a complex power system that allows its science instruments and communications to function continuously as it travels millions of miles from Earth. "Typically, there isn't one particular power source that can support the entire mission," says Linda Taylor, electrical engineer in Glenn Research Center s Power Systems Analysis Branch. "If you have solar arrays and you are in orbit, at some point you re going to be in eclipse." Because of this, Taylor explains, spacecraft like MESSENGER feature hybrid power systems. MESSENGER is powered by a two-panel solar array coupled with a nickel hydrogen battery. The solar arrays provide energy to the probe and charge the battery; when the spacecraft s orbit carries it behind Mercury and out of the Sun s light, the spacecraft switches to battery power to continue operations. Typically, hybrid systems with multiple power inputs and a battery acting alternately as storage and a power source require multiple converters to handle the power flow between the devices, Taylor says. (Power converters change the qualities of electrical energy, such as from alternating current to direct current, or between different levels of voltage or frequency.) This contributes to a pair of major concerns for spacecraft design. "Weight and size are big drivers for any space application," Taylor says, noting that every pound added to a space vehicle incurs significant costs. For an innovative solution to managing power flows in a lightweight, cost-effective manner, NASA turned to a private industry partner.

Wavelength Scaling of Widely-Tunable Terahertz Quantum-Cascade Metasurface Lasers

Terahertz (THz) external-cavity lasers based on quantum-cascade (QC) metasurfaces are emerging as widely-tunable, single-mode sources with the potential to cover the 1--6 THz range in discrete bands with milliwatt-level output power. By operating on an ultra-short cavity with a length on the order of the wavelength, the QC vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting-laser (VECSEL) architecture enables continuous, broadband tuning while producing high quality beam patterns and scalable power output. The methods and challenges for designing the metasurface at different frequencies are discussed. As the QC-VECSEL is scaled below 2 THz, the primary challenges are reduced gain from the QC active region, increased metasurface quality factor and its effect on tunable bandwidth, and larger power consumption due to a correspondingly scaled metasurface area. At frequencies above 4.5 THz, challenges arise from a reduced metasurface quality factor and the excess absorption that occurs from proximity to the Reststrahlen band. The results of four different devices — with center frequencies 1.8 THz, 2.8 THz, 3.5 THz, and 4.5 THz — are reported. Each device demonstrated at least 200 GHz of continuous single-mode tuning, with the largest being 650 GHz around 3.5 THz. The limitations of the tuning range are well modeled by a Fabry-Pérot cavity which accounts for the reflection phase of the metasurface and the effect of the metasurface quality factor on laser threshold. Lastly, the effect of different output couplers on device performance is studied, demonstrating a significant trade-off between the slope efficiency and tuning bandwidth.

All-Solid-State 2.45-to-2.78-THz Source

Sources in the THz range are required in order for NASA to implement heterodyne instruments in this frequency range. The source that has been demonstrated here will be used for an instrument on the SOFIA platform as well as for upcoming astrophysics missions. There are currently no electronic sources in the 2 3- THz frequency range. An electronically tunable compact source in this frequency range is needed for lab spectroscopy as well as for compact space-deployable heterodyne receivers. This solution for obtaining useful power levels in the 2 3- THz range is based on utilizing power-combined multiplier stages. Utilizing power combining, the input power can be distributed between different multiplier chips and then recombined after the frequency multiplication. A continuous wave (CW) coherent source covering 2.48 2.75 THz, with greater than 10 percent instantaneous and tuning bandwidth, and having l 14 W of output power at room temperature, has been demonstrated. This source is based on a 91.8 101.8-GHz synthesizer followed by a power amplifier and three cascaded frequency triplers. It demonstrates that purely electronic solid-state sources can generate a useful amount of power in a region of the electromagnetic spectrum where lasers (solid-state or gas) were previously the only available coherent sources. The bandwidth, agility, and operability of this THz source has enabled wideband, high-resolution spectroscopic measurements of water, methanol, and carbon monoxide with a resolution and signal-to-noise ratio unmatched by other existing systems, providing new insight in the physics of these molecules. Further - more, the power and optical beam quality are high enough to observe the Lamb-dip effect in water. The source frequency has an absolute accuracy better than 1 part in 1012, and the spectrometer achieves sub-Doppler frequency resolution better than 1 part in 108. The harmonic purity is better than 25 dB. This source can serve as a local oscillator for a variety of heterodyne systems, and can be used as a method for precision control of more powerful but much less frequency-agile quantum mechanical terahertz sources.

The Spacecraft Mass Balance as a Diagnostic Tool for Cabin Air Quality

The spacecraft-level mass balance is a powerful tool for diagnosing and decoupling factors influencing cabin air quality, especially with respect to trace contaminant propagation. Successful implementation of this approach relies upon accurate and temporally relevant air quality measurements, which are often challenging to attain for emerging trace contaminants. In addition to the proper interpretation of air quality data trends, a thorough understanding of subsystem-level mass transfer is required to characterize process performance. For many Environmental Control and Life Support System processes, subsystem mass transfer may be predicted based on physicochemical properties and classic unit operation design approaches. Gaps in understanding of process performance should be supplemented with thorough ground testing. A high confidence in the fidelity of one of these two aspects, air quality data or process performance, may help offset uncertainties in the other. At minimum, thresholding assumptions and numerical methods can be imposed to constrain unknown parameters within the physical envelope of the situation at hand. Finally, the complexity of cabin-wide integrated mass balances may be reduced by implementing a phenomenological approach towards subsystem discretization.

Evaluating Hydropower Plants for Wildfire Resilient Microgrids

The increasing occurrence and severity of wildfires in recent years is severely impacting critical infrastructures, including the power grid, compromising the quality of life and provision of essential services, including electricity. The western parts of the United States, more specifically Washington, Oregon, and California, which are prone to large wildfires, are also rich in hydropower resources. Hydropower resources located close to communities vulnerable to wildfire can be utilized to develop wildfire-resilient microgrids to support critical needs of those communities. Therefore, this paper develops a framework to characterize hydropower plants and evaluate their feasibility to operate in microgrids during wildfire-related outages. In the proposed framework, hydropower plants are characterized using various plant and site attributes and evaluated in terms of capability and performance indicative metrics. A case study is carried out evaluating the Hills Creek hydropower plant located in a wildfire-prone region of Oregon for wildfire-resilient microgrid. The results of steady-state and dynamic simulations show that the hydropower plant is capable of providing the essential microgrid services and powering nearby communities during extended wildfire-related outages.

Study on using a digital ride quality augmentation system to trim an engine-out in a Cessna 402B

A linear model of the Cessna 402B was used to determine if the control power available to a Ride Quality Augmentation System was adequate to trim an engine-out. Two simulations were completed: one using a steady state model, and the other using a state matrix model. The amount of rudder available was not sufficient in all cases to completely trim the airplane, but it was enough to give the pilot valuable reaction time. The system would be an added measure of safety for only a relatively small amount of development.

Cable/Antenna Bounds Connecting Field Levels To Personnel Safety And Electronic Upset Thresholds

We use bounding models to estimate the power delivered to interior ordnance as well as the pin level voltages along a cable at interior electronic components. The procedures underlying these estimates are described in some detail. Conservation of steady-state power in a linear passive system underpins the power estimate, whereas, losses and quality factor limits underpin the limits on voltage transformations. The final levels are compared to no-fire threshold power and to minimum upset voltage levels in an example using a canonical slot aperture and cavity to estimate interior fields.
