Demodulator and Accumulator for the High-speed Data Acquisition System

In support of nonflight project data acquisition, a high speed data acquisition system was designed. The demodulator and accumulator modules at the heart of this system perform the detection and prefiltering of data which are then further processed by a floating point systems 5210 array processor. Block diagrams of the demodulator and accumulator modules are presented.

Potential application of artificial concepts to aerodynamic simulation

The concept of artificial intelligence as it applies to computational fluid dynamics simulation is investigated. How expert systems can be adapted to speed the numerical aerodynamic simulation process is also examined. A proposed expert grid generation system is briefly described which, given flow parameters, configuration geometry, and simulation constraints, uses knowledge about the discretization process to determine grid point coordinates, computational surface information, and zonal interface parameters.

Sound generated by instability waves of supersonic flows. I Two-dimensional mixing layers. II - Axisymmetric jets

An investigation is conducted of the phenomenon of sound generation by spatially growing instability waves in high-speed flows. It is pointed out that this process of noise generation is most effective when the flow is supersonic relative to the ambient speed of sound. The inner and outer asymptotic expansions corresponding to an excited instability wave in a two-dimensional mixing layer and its associated acoustic fields are constructed in terms of the inner and outer spatial variables. In matching the solutions, the intermediate matching principle of Van Dyke and Cole is followed. The validity of the theory is tested by applying it to an axisymmetric supersonic jet and comparing the calculated results with experimental measurements. Very favorable agreements are found both in the calculated instability-wave amplitude distribution (the inner solution) and the near pressure field level contours (the outer solution) in each case.

Socio-technical integration of the workplace

The objective of socio-technical theory and design is to provide the best match between the social system and the technical system. The achievement of a best match makes optimal use of the resources of both systems. Implementation of this theory is best served when there is involvement by the user organization. The involvement relative to the introduction of new technology in the organization is extremely significant. Employee involvement is critical to effective participative management. The trends toward participative management and employee involvement have taken various forms. These have included quality circles, semi-autonomous teams and adhoc action teams. It is noteworthy to point out, as these processes have evolved, the role of a facilitator has become more prevalent. The facilitation of the socio-technical design system in industrial engineering is described.

The plasma regime at comet Giacobini-Zinner

The paper reviews results on the plasma regime at Comet Giacobini-Zinner obtained by the International Cometary Explorer. The observations are consistent with the existence of a weak shock which may be pulsating, but do not exclude the suggestion that the shock, though present around the subsolar point, is an the process of decaying to a wave on the flanks. 'The pick-up' of cometary ions leads to ion cyclotron, mirror, beam, and electrostatic instabilities which cause strong turbulence in the inner coma.

Advanced data management design for autonomous telerobotic systems in space using spaceborne symbolic processors

The use of computers in autonomous telerobots is reaching the point where advanced distributed processing concepts and techniques are needed to support the functioning of Space Station era telerobotic systems. Three major issues that have impact on the design of data management functions in a telerobot are covered. It also presents a design concept that incorporates an intelligent systems manager (ISM) running on a spaceborne symbolic processor (SSP), to address these issues. The first issue is the support of a system-wide control architecture or control philosophy. Salient features of two candidates are presented that impose constraints on data management design. The second issue is the role of data management in terms of system integration. This referes to providing shared or coordinated data processing and storage resources to a variety of telerobotic components such as vision, mechanical sensing, real-time coordinated multiple limb and end effector control, and planning and reasoning. The third issue is hardware that supports symbolic processing in conjunction with standard data I/O and numeric processing. A SSP that currently is seen to be technologically feasible and is being developed is described and used as a baseline in the design concept.

Aerodynamics of engine-airframe interaction

The development of the variational approach for the solution of inviscid aerodynamic problems using solution adaptive grids is discussed. The formulation of a new, directional weighting, functional has been shown to have desirable properties. The scheme has been applied to compute the transonic flow past two-dimensional airfoils using the Euler equations of inviscid, compressible flow. Transonic flows in quasi-one-dimensional nozzles and over the two dimensional airfoils are solved on the various solution-adaptive-grids to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed directional-concentration functional and the grid adaptation process from the stand point of improving the solution accuracy and demonstrating the overall convergence.

Transonic airfoil design for helicopter rotor applications

Despite the fact that the flow over a rotor blade is strongly influenced by locally three-dimensional and unsteady effects, practical experience has always demonstrated that substantial improvements in the aerodynamic performance can be gained by improving the steady two-dimensional charateristics of the airfoil(s) employed. The two phenomena known to have great impact on the overall rotor performance are: (1) retreating blade stall with the associated large pressure drag, and (2) compressibility effects on the advancing blade leading to shock formation and the associated wave drag and boundary-layer separation losses. It was concluded that: optimization routines are a powerful tool for finding solutions to multiple design point problems; the optimization process must be guided by the judicious choice of geometric and aerodynamic constraints; optimization routines should be appropriately coupled to viscous, not inviscid, transonic flow solvers; hybrid design procedures in conjunction with optimization routines represent the most efficient approach for rotor airfroil design; unsteady effects resulting in the delay of lift and moment stall should be modeled using simple empirical relations; and inflight optimization of aerodynamic loads (e.g., use of variable rate blowing, flaps, etc.) can satisfy any number of requirements at design and off-design conditions.

Studies in astronomical time series analysis. III - Fourier transforms, autocorrelation functions, and cross-correlation functions of unevenly spaced data

This paper develops techniques to evaluate the discrete Fourier transform (DFT), the autocorrelation function (ACF), and the cross-correlation function (CCF) of time series which are not evenly sampled. The series may consist of quantized point data (e.g., yes/no processes such as photon arrival). The DFT, which can be inverted to recover the original data and the sampling, is used to compute correlation functions by means of a procedure which is effectively, but not explicitly, an interpolation. The CCF can be computed for two time series not even sampled at the same set of times. Techniques for removing the distortion of the correlation functions caused by the sampling, determining the value of a constant component to the data, and treating unequally weighted data are also discussed. FORTRAN code for the Fourier transform algorithm and numerical examples of the techniques are given.

Interplanetary magnetic field enhancements - Evidence for solar wind dust trail interactions

Magnetic disturbances related to the passage of the asteroid 2201 Oljato are described. It is pointed out that the process leading to these disturbances must be associated with material in the orbit of Oljato and not the Oljato asteroid itself. Using data from latest space observations, the statistical association of these disturbances with the orbit of 2201 Oljato is updated, and the possible mechanisms for causing the disturbances are discussed. The phenomenon is considered to be associated with comet-like processes in the solar wind.

Manufacturing Ethyl Acetate From Fermentation Ethanol

Conceptual process uses dilute product of fermentation instead of concentrated ethanol. Low-concentration ethanol, extracted by vacuum from fermentation tank, and acetic acid constitutes feedstock for catalytic reaction. Product of reaction goes through steps that increases ethyl acetate content to 93 percent by weight. To conserve energy, heat exchangers recycle waste heat to preheat process streams at various points.

Geostationary Meteorological Satellite-5 (GMS-5)

The Geostationary Meteorological Satellite (GMS-5), which is being developed by the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA), is the fifth geostationary, spin stabilized, weather satellite. Its purposes are to observe cataclysmic events such as hurricanes, typhoons, and regional weather phenomena; to relay meteorological data from surface collection points to the Data Processing Center in Japan; and to transmit processing imaging data for facsimile reproduction. The satellite will be launched from the Tanegashima Space Center (TaSC) in Japan by a type H-II launch vehicle. The Deep Space Network (DSN) will support the transfer and drift orbit mission phases. The coverage will consist of the 26-m antennas as prime and the 34-m antenna at Madrid as backup support for launch through drift orbit. Maximum support will consist of two 8-hour tracks per station for a seven day period, plus 23 days of contingency support from all complexes. Information is given in tabular form for DSN support, frequency assignments, telemetry, command and tracking station responsibility.

Development of a calibration workstation for SIR-C

The paper describes the status of a comprehensive synthetic aperture radar (SAR) software package developed specifically to aid the calibration of a multifrequency and multipolarization radar like the Shuttle Imaging Radar, SIR-C. The primary data types processed are engineering telemetry, point targets (corner reflectors and polarimetric active radar calibrators), distributed targets (clutter), tone-generators, and ground receivers. The parameters derived to aid the calibration of the production processor include measurements of relative radiometric channel to channel imbalance, absolute calibration constants, antenna pattern corrections, noise levels, polarimetric cross-talk, and geometric offsets. The software reports standard performance measurements such as resolution, peak and integrated sidelobes, radiometric response accuracy, and geometrical distortions such as scale errors, position bias and standard deviation, and image skew. Furthermore, the inclusion of software to allow updates of the shuttle-state vector (position and velocity) is considered.

More About The Farley Three-Dimensional Braider

Farley three-dimensional braider, undergoing development, is machine for automatic fabrication of three-dimensional braided structures. Incorporates yarns into structure at arbitrary braid angles to produce complicated shape. Braiding surface includes movable braiding segments containing pivot points, along which yarn carriers travel during braiding process. Yarn carrier travels along sequence of pivot points as braiding segments move. Combined motions position yarns for braiding onto preform. Intended for use in making fiber preforms for fiber/matrix composite parts, such as multiblade propellers. Machine also described in "Farley Three-Dimensional Braiding Machine" (LAR-13911).

Improvement in detection of small wildfires

Detecting and imaging small wildfires with an Airborne Scanner is done against generally high background levels. The Airborne Scanner System used is a two-channel thermal IR scanner, with one channel selected for imaging the terrain and the other channel sensitive to hotter targets. If a relationship can be determined between the two channels that quantifies the background signal for hotter targets, then an algorithm can be determined that removes the background signal in that channel leaving only the fire signal. The relationship can be determined anywhere between various points in the signal processing of the radiometric data from the radiometric input to the quantized output of the system. As long as only linear operations are performed on the signal, the relationship will only depend on the system gain and offsets within the range of interest. The algorithm can be implemented either by using a look-up table or performing the calculation in the system computer. The current presentation will describe the algorithm, its derivation, and its implementation in the Firefly Wildfire Detection System by means of an off-the-shelf commercial scanner. Improvement over the previous algorithm used and the margin gained for improving the imaging of the terrain will be demonstrated.
