Using methodical compositional tuning to optimize Co x Tb 1− x structural and magnetic properties

The Co-rich end of the Co–Tb binary phase diagram (Co x Tb 1−x , x = 0.66–0.82) has been investigated to understand the phases which form in the bulk and how they interact to yield magnetic behavior which has been reported to be ideal for use in spintronic devices. Here, this work shows that the phases and phase fractions present across this composition range follow those predicted by the binary phase diagram, and all compounds in this composition range are multiphase. Magnetic measurements show similar behavior in this composition range to related thin film work, and we attribute the observed behavior to the respective binary phases present in each compound. Ideal magnetic behavior of minimized magnetic saturation and maximized coercivity is observed in the range of x= 0.78 − 0.80 related to the majority phase Co 7 Tb 2 in these two compounds. High pressure magnetic measurements show magnetic saturation and coercivity at 300 K change little with respect to external pressure. The extension of the synthesis of these binaries into the bulk allows for specific binary phases to be targeted and analyzed for consideration in future devices.

Geometric Optimization of an Electrochemical Purification Cell to Prevent Corrosion in CSP Plants During Operation

When exposed to moisture or oxygen, molten chloride salts produce corrosive impurities which degrade containment alloys. This can significantly decrease the lifetime and increase costs of molten-salt-based systems. To overcome this barrier, we designed and modeled an electrochemical purification cell to remove the corrosive impurity MgOH+. Various reactor architectures, including continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTRs) and plug flow reactors (PFRs) were investigated. Steady-state thermoelectric properties were evaluated using analytical methods, allowing assessment of the effects of structure and design parameters such as flow rate, cell length, and cross-sectional area of molten salt. The results suggest that our design could most effectively increase reliability and decrease costs of molten-chloride-salt-based systems by protecting them during continuous operation using an annular plug flow reactor.

Holistic scan optimization of nacelle-mounted lidars for inflow and wake characterization at the RAAW and AWAKEN field campaigns

In this article, we provide a methodological framework for designing the scanning strategies of nacelle-mounted scanning lidars for wind energy field experiments, and apply it at two major experimental field campaigns. For the Rotor Aerodynamics, Aeroelastics, and Wake project (RAAW), we leverage two scanning lidars on one turbine to characterize the incoming turbulence and the turbine wake. For the American WAKE experimeNt (AWAKEN), we use four scanning lidars on top of four turbines in a large wind power plant to investigate both individual wakes and wind-plant-scale flow features.

Optimizing Traffic Signal Control to Enhance Transportation Efficiency and Maximize Pedestrian Benefits in the Road Network

Increasing urban mobility requirements demand efficient transportation system strategies for both vehicular and pedestrian movement. This study enhances the Decentralized Graph-based Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (DGMARL) approach, originally tailored for vehicular traffic signal timing, to incorporate pedestrian traffic dynamics. The improved algorithm considers crucial metrics such as Eco_PI, assesses vehicle fuel consumption by factoring in stops and delays, and addresses pedestrian waiting time, crucial for system efficiency while acknowledging driver waiting time impact. Utilizing Digital Twin simulation along the MLK Smart Corridor in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the algorithm's performance is compared for various pedestrian control scenarios. To evaluate the effectiveness of DGMARL, this study compared DGMARL-enabled signal management with automated pedestrian traffic detection and an actuated signal management system (real-word baseline) with pedestrian recall, which predetermingly enforces a pedestrian phase every cycle. Findings indicate substantial improvements with DGMARL, showing a 28.29% enhancement in vehicle Eco_PI, a 60.55 % reduction in pedestrian waiting time, and a 55.74% decrease in driver stop delay, on average, compared to the baseline actuated signal timing plan.
