NASA Exploration Toilet Hardware Status and Crew Feedback from ISS Artemis-2 Demonstration

The Universal Waste Management System (UWMS), ISS operational nomenclature “Toilet”, was initially installed on the International Space Station (ISS) in 2020 with final installation completed in 2021. Technical progress continues to be made with each on-orbit operation and will ultimately culminate with nominal US crew use of the hardware on ISS. During 2023, the Artemis-2 Demonstration was started, and this paper discusses issues encountered, on-orbit troubleshooting, subsequent ground failure investigation and proposed repairs as well as near-term plans to resume the Artemis-2 demo. Also discussed is an update to the commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) Conductivity Monitor which is planned to be flown for the resumption of the demo along with additional UWMS hardware and Toilet Integration Hardware (TIH). An updated design of the commode seat and fecal bag for Artemis-2 UWMS will be demonstrated on ISS and a summary of the hardware is included in the paper. Use of the hardware during the first days of the aborted demonstration by crewmembers and feedback received is summarized as well as hardware updates resulting from that feedback. The paper will also provide an overview of the demo results to date that inform the Orion-installed UWMS unit and future manifesting of consumables for both Orion and ISS.

Harmonizing Food Systems Emissions Accounting for More Effective Climate Action

Food systems—encompassing activities in food production, land-use change, supply chains and waste management—contribute significantly to climate change. Recent estimates indicate that food systems produce over 30% of annual anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (about 20% of CO 2 , 50% of CH 4 , and 75% of N 2 O), with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimating a notably broad range of 23%–42% of global GHG emissions. This paper synthesizes current research on the contributions of food systems to climate change, highlights challenges in quantifying their impact and proposes a harmonized accounting framework for more effective climate action. We recommend that an expert committee aligned with the IPCC develop guidance for food systems emissions accounting in four key areas, including: (1) defining system boundaries and nomenclature; (2) developing protocols to allocate broader sectoral emissions to food systems; (3) prioritizing critical areas for research into activity data and emissions factors; and (4) developing a balanced framework for evaluating the impact of mitigation interventions in light of other food systems imperatives. The committee should be integrated into two key international policy processes—the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the United Nations Food Systems Summit—to support coordinated action towards global net-zero goals. Guidance from the committee could significantly improve the ability of governments, companies, and researchers to estimate, report, monitor and ultimately reduce the climate impacts of food systems.

Geographic Mapping Tool for Power Systems

Power systems models are continuously updated to reflect changing infrastructure and modeling techniques. Open source geographic locations of power systems infrastructure do not include attributes that directly tie to electrical models. Moreover, relationships established between electric models and geospatial data sets do not apply to a future model because of nomenclature changes and architecture changes. The software titled “Geographic Mapping Tool for Power Systems” starts with a known set of locations, then runs multiple iterations to identify missing locations with a triangulation algorithm based on the branch connections and distances to the known locations.”

Development of an end state vision to implement digital monitoring in nuclear plants

Transitioning from an onsite Maintenance & Diagnostics Center to cloud-based services offers many new opportunities with computing power and storage, but also new challenges in terms of networking and security. This report will cover everything required for that transition including data processing and uploading to cloud services, feature selection, model creation, and result visualization for decision making. Although there are several other cloud-based services (e.g. Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud), this report explores Microsoft Azure to simplify nomenclature and maintain a consistent focus. Many of the services offered by Microsoft Azure are also available in the other cloud-based services, and their differences have been recorded in other literature. The Azure services most important to a nuclear power plant including networking & security, storage & databases, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are reviewed here. Networking covers all aspects related to communication to Azure resources including security, privacy, and redundancy. Storage & databases includes data storage, upgrading, patching, backups, and monitoring. The AI services allows the user access to the machine learning (ML) techniques developed with Azure including automated ML, anomaly detection, computer vision, and natural language processing. This report summaries the features, capabilities, and challenges when using cloud-based services in a user-friendly manner.

LDRD 22A1059-068FP Tailoring the Properties of Multi-Phase Materials Through the Use of Correlative Microscopy and Machine Learning - Poster

High strength alloys with good ductility, hardness, and toughness are needed to meet stringent design requirements for extreme environments. One complication in this pursuit is the evidence that metals rarely exhibit both high strength and good fracture toughness as the underlying mechanisms work in opposition. An exception to this behavior is found in multiphase alloys that form complex microstructures of mixed phases with variable grain sizes and shapes that provide increased fracture toughness by the arrangement of their constituent elements. We propose to explore this phenomenon using state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) techniques in a new and novel manner to identify and correlate the critical microstructural features in a Titanium-10Vanadium-2Iron-3Aluminum (Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al) alloy that is reported to exhibit high strength and fracture toughness. Additionally, we will employ multiple, complementary characterization techniques such as optical microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning electron microscopy to provide multi-layer, quantitative ground truth measures of the microstructures. This data will be used to train a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) in a semi-supervised environment to identify key microstructural features such as ? platelet dimensions and locations and ?/? phase boundaries and correlate those features with the strength and toughness. Here the ? and ? nomenclature refers to hexagonal close pack (hcp) and body center cubic (bcc) crystal structures, respectively. Previous work has focused on popular alloys and typically used one characterization technique. This research is focused on a promising titanium alloy, uses multiple complimentary characterization tools to provide precise microstructural information and correlates to improved fracture toughness. The resulting ML tool can be trained for additional microstructural features, different alloy(s), and or target mechanical properties.
