Ensuring the relocatability of programs in the operational system DOS YeS

Specific modifications in the Disk Operational System Unified Series to insure the relocatability of programs stored permanently in the core image library is described. A self-relocating method for loading programs into the working memory with re-editing all the programs recorded in the core image library is presented. The modified linkage editor can be included in a relocation dictionary containing data about each address constant at the assembly stage at the request of the programmer. The relocation dictionary increases the dimension of the RL-phase in comparison with the dimension of this same phase when edited by the standard method, making possible the creation of multiphase program complexes. Generation and use of the modified system using Assembly language is described. An example of the use of the system is given, and limitations of the use of the relocatable programs in the modified system are outlined.

Tropospheric chemistry - A global perspective

Processes that affect the concentration of tropospheric OH are considered, taking into account linkages between the chemistry of OH and the chemistry of H, HO2, and H2O2. A review is presented of observational data of special relevance to OH, notably the distributions of CO, CH4, O3, H2O, HNO3, NO, and NO2. Most of the results presented in connection with the description of the model were obtained by solving time-dependent continuity equations. Rates for photolytic processes were allowed to vary diurnally with insolation. It is found that a well-calibrated and reliable model for OH places important constraints on global budgets for a variety of gases including CH4, H2, and CH3Cl in addition to CO. Accurate measurements of species such as CH3CCl3 can provide valuable checks on global models that must integrate over a variety of atmospheric conditions. However, emission rates for the relevant gases must be adequately quantified.

Synthesis of oligoguanylates on oligocytidylate templates

The influence of template length in the self-condensation of guanosine 5'-phosphorimidazole in the presence of oligocytidylate templates is investigated. Reactions were carried out with cyclic cytidine 2',3'-phosphate, oligo- or polyC, and radioactively labeled guanosine 5'-phosphorimidazolide in the presence of Zn(+2) or Pb(+2) catalyst; product yields were determined by paper chromatography, thin-layer chromatography, and high-performance liquid chromatography. In the absence of a catalytic metal or in the presence of Pb(+2), a significant template effect is observed starting with the cytidine dimer and increasing in yield up to the hexamer template. Oligomers longer than the template are observed, and are predominantly 2'-5' linked in the presence of Pb(+2) and of mixed linkages in the uncatalyzed reaction. With the zinc ion as the catalyst, the template effect is first observed with the pentamer and is maximal with the heptamer. Products are predominantly 3'-5', and only a small proportion of them are longer than the template. The importance of the demonstrated formation of molecules with up to 10 guanosine units from oligocytidines as short as the dimer on the primitive earth is noted.

Thermal oxidative degradation reactions of perfluoroalkylethers

The mechanisms operative in thermal oxidative degradation of Fomblin Z and hexafluoropropene oxide derived fluids and the effect of alloys and additives upon these processes are investigated. The nature of arrangements responsible for the inherent thermal oxidative instability of the Fomblin Z fluids is not established. It was determined that this behavior is not associated with hydrogen end groups or peroxy linkages. The degradation rate of these fluids at elevated temperatures in oxidizing atmospheres is dependent on the surface/volume ratio. Once a limiting ratio is reached, a steady rate appears to be attained. Based on elemental analysis and oxygen consumption data, CF2OCF2CF2O2, no. CF2CF2O, is one of the major arrangements present. The action of the M-50 and Ti(4 Al, 4 Mn) alloys is much more drastic in the case of Fomblin Z fluids than that observed for the hexafluoropropene derived materials. The effectiveness of antioxidation anticorrosion additives, P-3 and phospha-s-triazine, in the presence of metal alloys is very limited at 316 C; at 288 C the additives arrested almost completely the fluid degradation. The phospha-s-triazine appears to be at least twice as effective as the P-3 compound; it also protected the coupon better. The Ti(4 Al, 4 Mn) alloy degraded the fluid mainly by chain scission processes this takes place to a much lesser degree with M-50.

A movable stop mechanism for the SIRE telescope

A movable stop mechanism (MSM) designed to activate flaps that change the size and shape of a telescope aperture stop on command is described. Operating at the cryogenic temperatures of the optical system, it consists primarily of a rotary solenoid that drives (activates) dual four-bar linkages in synchronism that in turn rotate the butterfly flaps into position. The design, performance characteristics, and testing of this mechanism are discussed. Specific problems that occurred during testing and the solutions that were adopted are also described.

Hydraulic actuator mechanism to control aircraft spoiler movements through dual input commands

An aircraft flight spoiler control mechanism is described. The invention enables the conventional, primary spoiler control system to retain its operational characteristics while accommodating a secondary input controlled by a conventional computer system to supplement the settings made by the primary input. This is achieved by interposing springs between the primary input and the spoiler control unit. The springs are selected to have a stiffness intermediate to the greater force applied by the primary control linkage and the lesser resistance offered by the spoiler control unit. Thus, operation of the primary input causes the control unit to yield before the springs, yet, operation of the secondary input, acting directly on the control unit, causes the springs to yield and absorb adjustments before they are transmitted into the primary control system.

Thrust reverser for a long duct fan engine

A bypass duct outer cowl includes a fixed cascade disposed between axially spaced fixed cowl portions and a translatable cowl sleeve and blocker doors movably disposed on the respective radially outer and inner sides of the cascade. Actuation and linkage structure located entirely within the outer cowl provides for selectively moving the cowl sleeve rearwardly and rotating the blocker doors to a position across the bypass duct to cause the fan airflow to pass through the cascade in a thrust reversing manner.

On-board communication for active-control transport aircraft

An investigation of active control communications sponsored by the NASA Langley Research Center is summarized. Particular attention is given to comparative architectures, for which a common set of requirements is generated as a baseline. Most of the requirements are aircraft functional in nature, such as stability and command augmentation, structural load relief, flight path control, flight control linkage, flight monitoring, management, navigation, engine control, and ground communication; the time element, the hazard environment, and the communications capacity estimation are also important factors. The architectures involve several communication technologies, including dedicated links, broadcast busing, and multiplex busing. The multiplex bus system provides the greatest flexibility and installation efficiency. A future homogeneous network system is also proposed, which would be fault and damage tolerant and would, with advanced technology, avoid the problems of designing a very large and flight critical multiplex bus system.

Infrared spectroscopic analysis of the effects of simulated space radiation on a polyimide

Infrared spectroscopic techniques have been used to study the effects of electron radiation on the polyimide PMDA-p,p-prime- ODA. The radiation exposures were made at various dose rates, for a total dose approximately equal to that for 30 years of exposure to electron radiation in geosynchronous earth orbit. At high dose rates the major effect was probably the formation of a polyisoimide or a charged quaternary amine, and at the low dose rates the effect was a reduction in the amount or aromatic ether linkage. In addition, the effects of dose rate for a small total dose were studied. Elevated temperatures occurred at high dose rates and were, in part, probably the cause of the radiation product. The data suggest that dose rates for accelerated simulations of the space environment should not exceed 100,000 rads/sec.

RAMP - A fault tolerant distributed microcomputer structure for aircraft navigation and control

Design methodologies for realizing future high authority autoflight control systems are being investigated, taking into account also the study of distributed microcomputer architectures. Attention is given to the redundant asynchronous microprocessor (RAMP) structure. RAMP comprises a connected network of microcomputers which has as input command and sensor information, and which generates servo information to drive actuators, and thrust linkages. Tolerance to hardware failures is achieved by static redundancy. Results of a failed microcomputer are simply rejected. This is done in lieu of dynamic redundancy wherein the distributed computer system performs real time fault detection and reconfiguration of the system. Attention is given to the RAMP network structure and operation, flight control with parallel asynchronous computers, and intermittent fault tolerance.

Control of large thermal distortions in a cryogenic wind tunnel

The National Transonic Facility (NTF) is a research wind tunnel capable of operation at temperatures down to 89K (160 R) and pressures up to 900,000 Pa (9 atmospheres) to achieve Reynolds numbers approaching 120,000,000. Wide temperature excursions combined with the precise alignment requirements of the tunnel aerodynamic surfaces imposed constraints on the mechanisms supporting the internal structures of the tunnel. The material selections suitable for this application were also limited. A general design philosophy of utilizing a single fixed point for each linear degree of freedom and guiding the expansion as required was adopted. These support systems allow thermal expansion to take place in a manner that minimizes the development of thermally induced stresses while maintaining structural alignment and resisting high aerodynamic loads. Typical of the support mechanisms are the preload brackets used in the fan shroud system and the Watts linkage used to support the upstream nacelle. The design of these mechanisms along with the basic design requirements and the constraints imposed by the tunnel system are discussed.

Securing mechanism for the deployable column of the Hoop/Column antenna

The Column Longeron Latch (CLL) was designed and developed as the securing mechanism for the deployable, telescoping column of the Hoop/Column antenna. The column is an open lattice structure with three longerons as the principal load-bearing members. It is divided into telescoping sections that are deployed after the antenna is place in Earth orbit. The CLL provides a means to automatically lock the longeron sections into position during deployment as well as a means of unlocking the sections when the antenna is to be restowed. The CLL is a four bar linkage mechanism using the over center principle for locking. It utilizes the relative movement of the longeron sections to activate the mechanism during antenna deployment and restowing. The CLL design is one of the first mechanisms developed to meet the restowing requirements of spacecraft which will utilize the STS retrieval capability.

Multidimensional Programming Methods for Energy Facility Siting: Alternative Approaches

The use of multidimensional optimization methods in solving power plant siting problems, which are characterized by several conflicting, noncommensurable objectives is addressed. After a discussion of data requirements and exclusionary site screening methods for bounding the decision space, classes of multiobjective and goal programming models are discussed in the context of finite site selection. Advantages and limitations of these approaches are highlighted and the linkage of multidimensional methods with the subjective, behavioral components of the power plant siting process is emphasized.
