Bioelectrochemical reactor to manage anthropogenic sulfate pollution for freshwater ecosystems: Mathematical modeling and experimental validation

Anthropogenic sulfate loading into otherwise low-sulfate freshwater systems can cause significant ecological consequences as a biogeochemical stressor. To address this challenge, in situ bioremediation technologies have been developed to leverage naturally occurring microorganisms that transform sulfate into sulfide rather than implementing resource-intensive physio-chemical processes. However, bioremediation technologies often require the supply of electron donors to facilitate biological sulfate reduction. Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) can be an alternative approach for supplying molecular hydrogen as an electron donor for sulfate-reducing bacteria through water electrolysis. Although the fundamental mechanisms behind BESs have been studied, limited research has evaluated the design and operational parameters of treatment systems when developing BESs on a scale relevant to environmental systems. Further, this study aimed to develop an application-based mathematical model to evaluate the performance of BESs across a range of reactor configurations and operational modes. The model was based on sulfate transformation by hydrogenotrophic sulfate-reducing bacteria coupled with the recovery of solid iron sulfide species formed by the oxidative dissolution of dissolved ferrous iron from a stainless steel anode. Sulfate removal closely corresponded to the rate of electrolytic hydrogen production and hydraulic residence time but was less sensitive to specific microbial rate constants. The mathematical model results were compared to experimental data from a pilot-scale BES tested with nonacidic mine drainage as a case study. The close agreement between the mathematical model and the pilot-scale BES experiment highlights the efficacy of using a mathematical model as a tool to develop a conceptual design of a scaled-up treatment system.

Radiation Controllable Synthesis of Robust Covalent Organic Framework Conjugates for Efficient Dynamic Column Extraction of 99 TcO4 -

Wang et al. report here an ultra-robust imidazolium-decorated covalent organic framework (COF) conjugate fabricated by an ionizing radiation strategy for efficient capture of 99 TcO 4 -, where tunable ReO 4 - uptake up to 952 mg g -1 can be achieved by simply adjusting the γ-ray dose. The COFs feature high porosity, ultra-robust nanofiber structure, and fast adsorption kinetics, thus emphasizing their advantages in terms of column experiments.

Heterogeneous hydroformylation of alkenes by Rh-based catalysts

Heterogeneously catalyzed hydroformylation reactions avert the problems of separation in homogeneous reactions, reduce the discharge of phosphorus-containing wastes, and prevent the loss of precious metals. This review summarizes the developments of catalysts for heterogeneous hydroformylation in the last decade and proposes potential modification methods for future improvements. The hydroformylation properties of different reactants are compared in order to emphasize the fact that various olefins face unique challenges. The hydroformylation of ethylene requires the enhancement of catalytic activity and chemoselectivity, whereas that of propylene needs improvements in both chemoselectivity and regioselectivity. The hydroformylation of longer-chain olefins and styrene seeks further improvement in regioselectivity. The catalytic properties of activity, selectivity, and stability can be tuned through electronic effects (bimetallic effects, phosphine ligands, and single-atom catalysts), steric hindrance (encapsulation structures, diphosphine ligands, and local functional groups), and reaction condition optimization (temperature, pressure, and solvents). Furthermore, the understanding of these effects is critical in future catalyst design for heterogeneous hydroformylation reactions.

Polysaccharide utilization loci in Bacteroides determine population fitness and community-level interactions

Polysaccharide utilization loci (PULs) are co-regulated bacterial genes that sense nutrients and enable glycan digestion. Human gut microbiome members, notably Bacteroides, contain numerous PULs that enable glycan utilization and shape ecological dynamics. To investigate the role of PULs on fitness and inter-species interactions, we develop a CRISPR-based genome editing tool to study 23 PULs in Bacteroides uniformis (BU). BU PULs show distinct glycan-degrading functions and transcriptional coordination that enables the population to adapt upon loss of other PULs. Exploiting a BU mutant barcoding strategy, we demonstrate that in vitro fitness and BU colonization in the murine gut are enhanced by deletion of specific PULs and modulated by glycan availability. PULs mediate glycan-dependent interactions with butyrate producers that depend on the degradation mechanism and glycan utilization ability of the butyrate producer. Thus, PULs determine community dynamics and butyrate production and provide a selective advantage or disadvantage depending on the nutritional landscape.

Parallel exponential time differencing methods for geophysical flow simulations

Two ocean models are considered for geophysical flow simulations: the multilayer shallow water equations and the multilayer primitive equations. For the former, we investigate the parallel performance of exponential time differencing (ETD) methods, including exponential Rosenbrock–Euler, ETD2wave, and B-ETD2wave. For the latter, we take advantage of the splitting of barotropic and baroclinic modes and propose a new two-level method in which an ETD method is applied to solve the fast barotropic mode. Furthermore, these methods could improve the computational efficiency of numerical simulations because ETD methods allow for much larger time step sizes than traditional explicit time-stepping techniques that are commonly used in existing computational ocean models. Several standard benchmark tests for ocean modeling are performed and comparison of the numerical results demonstrates a great potential of applying the parallel ETD methods for simulating real-world geophysical flows.

Rats use memory confidence to guide decisions

Memory enables access to past experiences to guide future behavior. Humans can determine which memories to trust (high confidence) and which to doubt (low confidence). How memory retrieval, memory confidence, and memory-guided decisions are related, however, is not understood. In particular, how confidence in memories is used in decision making is unknown. We developed a spatial memory task in which rats were incentivized to gamble their time: betting more following a correct choice yielded greater reward. Rat behavior reflected memory confidence, with higher temporal bets following correct choices. We applied machine learning to identify a memory decision variable and built a generative model of memories evolving over time that accurately predicted both choices and confidence reports. Our results reveal in rats an ability thought to exist exclusively in primates and introduce a unified model of memory dynamics, retrieval, choice, and confidence.

Chickpea protein hydrolysate as a novel plant-based cryoprotectant in frozen surimi: Insights into protein structure integrity and gelling behaviors

Chickpea protein (CP) and its enzymatic hydrolysates are one of the most widely consumed pulse ingredients manifesting versatile applications in food industry, such as binders, emulsifiers, and meat protein substitutes. Other than those well-known functionalities, however, the use of CP as a cryoprotectant remained unexplored. Here, in this study, we prepared the chickpea protein hydrolysate (CPH) and investigated its cryoprotective effects to frozen surimi in terms of the protein structure integrity and gelling behaviors. Results indicated that CPH could inhibit myofibrillar protein (MP) denaturation and oxidation during the freeze–thaw cycling, as evidenced by their increased solubility, Ca 2+ -ATPase activity, sulfhydryl concentration, and declined content of disulfide bonds, carbonyl concentration and surface hydrophobicity. Freezing-induced changes on MP secondary structures were also retarded. Moreover, gels prepared from CPH-protected frozen surimi demonstrated more stabilized microstructure, uniform water distribution, enhanced elasticity, gel strength and water holding capacity. The CPH alone, at a reducing addition content of 4% (w/w), exhibited comparable cryoprotective performance to that of the commercial formulation (4% sucrose and 4% sorbitol). Therefore, this study provides scientific insights for development of pulse proteins as novel and high-performance food cryoprotectants.
