Improving Solar and Solar+Storage Screening Techniques to Reduce Utility Interconnection Time and Costs (Final Technical Report)

Residential PV installations have increased rapidly over the last decade, and the increased application volume has caused permitting delays and lower overall adoption rates. In this project, we developed and evaluated whether data-driven secondary modeling and screening techniques can help utilities assess customer applications more accurately than traditional screening shortcuts. Secondary topologies are predicted using decision trees and commonly available information, such as service transformer, customer, and street locations. Conductors were predicted using a logistic regression method based on real world object (RWO) types, service transformer ratings, conductor length, and distance to transformer. After developing the combined primary and secondary distribution network model, hosting capacity results were used to train a random forest model to predict the pass/fail likelihood of a customer application. Powerflow based models with predicted secondaries and data-driven methods both increased the screening success rate, relative to common utility heuristics, by as much as 55 percentage points. Data-driven screening techniques were described by one utility as a "right-sized" approach for residential customers given the low-risk of small errors and the high-cost of accurate modeling.

Fabrication and Assembly of Robust, Water-Soluble Molecular Interconnects via Encoded Hybridization (Final Report)

The major goals of this project include: i) the synthesis of sequence-specific oligo(peptoid)s bearing dynamic covalent pendant groups (i.e., amine, aldehyde boronic acid, and catechol) and characterization of the selective hybridization between these oligomers, where amines will reversibly interact with aldehydes and boronic acids with catechols; ii) the synthesis of dynamic covalent-bearing, trialkylsilane-protected 1,3- and 1,4-ethynyl phenylhalide monomers and their subsequent sequence-specific coupling via sequential Sonogashira ligation and fluoride-mediated silyl deprotection reactions to afford pi-conjugated oligo(phenylene-ethynylene)s; iii) templated, semi-conservative replication of dynamic covalent oligomers; and iv) characterization of the dynamic covalent hybridization of oligo(phenylene-ethynylene)s and the assembly of these oligomers into complex nanostructures.

Small Hydropower Interconnection Best Practices Guidelines and Templates

The process for development of a hydropower project can be a convoluted and lengthy process involving numerous federal, state, and local agencies and encompass a plethora of stakeholders that other renewable project development processes may not have to consider. Additionally, the process may vary depending on who the owner/operator is, such as private, nonutility companies; private utility companies; municipalities; electric cooperatives; private citizens; and state and federal government agencies.

Understanding the Capabilities and Limitations of the Controls and Operations of High Voltage Direct Current (HVdc) Converters in Interconnected Electric Power Systems

This project will seek to build a fundamental understanding, and capability, to model and simulate the controls and operations of high voltage direct current (HVdc) converter stations in an electromagnetic simulation environment. While HVdc stations have been operated in the United States for over 50 years, these are typically simple two terminal point-to-point systems. Recently multi-terminal systems have begun to be deployed. The challenge with these new multi-terminal systems is that they often use different control schemes on the different terminals. The interactions of existing and new controls, and the fact that HVdc systems are rates in the 1,000’s of MWs means that small control instabilities can have dramatic impacts to bulk power systems. Despite these challenges, the operational capabilities of HVdc make them an attractive option for the transfer of the large amounts of renewable electricity that will be necessary for decarbonization of the nation’s electrical infrastructure and other sectors.

The Electric Grid, Distributed Generation, and Grid Interconnection

This fact sheet is part of the Community Planning for Solar toolkit designed to help Massachusetts municipalities and others proactively plan for solar development in their communities. This fact sheet will walk you through the electricity system, and help you understand how the grid is changing as distributed generation (DG) electricity sources become more common.

Commercialization of Distribution System Load Modeling Tool for Improved DER Interconnection Studies

Residential and commercial buildings have huge potential to contribute value to improve grid resilience by participating grid services. To reveal the significant value, it is critical to estimate the grid service capability from these buildings. Unlike the large-scale distributed energy resources such as wind and solar farms, those buildings need to participate grid services in aggregation, not by individual. Therefore, it is important to appropriately group buildings for aggregation. The load profiles in the same group will have similar characteristics at the same time step, so grid operators can send the grid service signal to the customer group with a higher chance to respond at that time step. In this paper, we develop a load profile clustering method to classify the building-level load profiles for grid service capability estimation. In our two-step clustering approach, we first calculate the total load consumption for each building, clustering the load profiles based on energy consumption level. Then, we further cluster the load profiles in each energy cluster based on the load shape. The parameter selection for each clustering step is discussed. The proposed method is applied on actual building-level load profiles, and the results have proved the effectiveness of this method.

Interconnected Risks in Electricity Systems: Understanding Research Challenges, Needs, and Partnerships

The U.S. federal government has a potential role in mitigating the most poorly addressed risks across electricity markets and interdependent systems. Electricity system risks stem from extreme acute shocks (e.g., cyberattacks, extreme weather, and supply chain disruptions) and chronic stressors (e.g., global economic competition, uncertainties surrounding emerging technologies, climate change, and related conflicts). These acute shocks and chronic stressors can result in dire consequences for society, underscoring the need for better information for decision makers in both public and private sectors. Best practices and a shared understanding of risk management and risk quantification must be rapidly developed and disseminated. Informed by a quantitative treatment of risk to electrical infrastructure and interdependent systems, decision makers can more prudently and efficiently prioritize mitigation initiatives to maximize benefits to government, businesses, and the public.
