Integrated Safety Analysis Tiers

Commercial partnerships and organizational constraints, combined with complex systems, may lead to division of hazard analysis across organizations. This division could cause important hazards to be overlooked, causes to be missed, controls for a hazard to be incomplete, or verifications to be inefficient. Each organization s team must understand at least one level beyond the interface sufficiently enough to comprehend integrated hazards. This paper will discuss various ways to properly divide analysis among organizations. The Ares I launch vehicle integrated safety analyses effort will be utilized to illustrate an approach that addresses the key issues and concerns arising from multiple analysis responsibilities.

ISAAC (integrated Structural Analysis and Control) via Continuum Modeling and Distributed Frequency Domain Design Techniques

A methodology is proposed for the integrated design of structures and their controls. The integration of design is accomplished through simultaneous selection, via optimization, of designer-specified parameters governing the structure and its controller. The cost function is chosen to address the primary structural and control goals. Inequality constraints are added to insure that additional design requirements are met. The methodology is illustrated through development of an example involving a cantilever beam. A distributed transfer function is derived from the Bernoulli-Euler beam equation. A controller parameterization is then chosen, and performance requirements specified. A controller is then obtained via optimization, which is shown to give good performance.

Robustness Analysis of Integrated LPV-FDI Filters and LTI-FTC System for a Transport Aircraft

This paper proposes an analysis framework for robustness analysis of a nonlinear dynamics system that can be represented by a polynomial linear parameter varying (PLPV) system with constant bounded uncertainty. The proposed analysis framework contains three key tools: 1) a function substitution method which can convert a nonlinear system in polynomial form into a PLPV system, 2) a matrix-based linear fractional transformation (LFT) modeling approach, which can convert a PLPV system into an LFT system with the delta block that includes key uncertainty and scheduling parameters, 3) micro-analysis, which is a well known robust analysis tool for linear systems. The proposed analysis framework is applied to evaluating the performance of the LPV-fault detection and isolation (FDI) filters of the closed-loop system of a transport aircraft in the presence of unmodeled actuator dynamics and sensor gain uncertainty. The robustness analysis results are compared with nonlinear time simulations.

A computer software system for integration and analysis of grid-based remote sensing data with other natural resource data

This report describes a computer-based information system designed to assist in the integration of commonly available spatial data for regional planning and resource analysis. The Resource Analysis Program (RAP) provides a variety of analytical and mapping phases for single factor or multi-factor analyses. The unique analytical and graphic capabilities of RAP are demonstrated with a study conducted in Windsor Township, Eaton County, Michigan. For this study, soil, land cover/use, topographic and geological maps were used as a data base to develop an eleven map portfolio. The major themes of the portfolio are land cover/use, nonpoint water pollution, waste disposal, and ground water recharge.

Strategic Technology Investment Analysis: An Integrated System Approach

Complex technology investment decisions within NASA are increasingly difficult to make such that the end results are satisfying the technical objectives and all the organizational constraints. Due to a restricted science budget environment and numerous required technology developments, the investment decisions need to take into account not only the functional impact on the program goals, but also development uncertainties and cost variations along with maintaining a healthy workforce. This paper describes an approach for optimizing and qualifying technology investment portfolios from the perspective of an integrated system model. The methodology encompasses multi-attribute decision theory elements and sensitivity analysis. The evaluation of the degree of robustness of the recommended portfolio provides the decision-maker with an array of viable selection alternatives, which take into account input uncertainties and possibly satisfy nontechnical constraints. The methodology is presented in the context of assessing capability development portfolios for NASA technology programs.

NURBS-Based Geometry for Integrated Structural Analysis

This grant was initiated in April 1993 and completed in September 1996. The primary goal of the project was to exploit the emerging defacto CAD standard of Non- Uniform Rational B-spline (NURBS) based curve and surface geometry to integrate and streamline the process of turbomachinery structural analysis. We focused our efforts on critical geometric modeling challenges typically posed by the requirements of structural analysts. We developed a suite of software tools that facilitate pre- and post-processing of NURBS-based turbomachinery blade models for finite element structural analyses. We also developed tools to facilitate the modeling of blades in their manufactured (or cold) state based on nominal operating shape and conditions. All of the software developed in the course of this research is written in the C++ language using the Iris Inventor 3D graphical interface tool-kit from Silicon Graphics. In addition to enhanced modularity, improved maintainability, and efficient prototype development, this design facilitates the re-use of code developed for other NASA projects and provides a uniform and professional 'look and feel' for all applications developed by the Iowa State Team.

Understanding the dynamic evolution of atomically dispersed Cu catalyst for CO 2 electrochemical conversion using integrated XANES analysis and mechanistic studies

Direct electrochemical conversion of CO 2 to ethanol (CH 3 CH 2 OH) offers a promising strategy to lower CO 2 emission while storing energy from renewable electricity. Our recent study reported a carbon-supported atomically dispersed Cu catalyst that achieved the highest reported selectivity for CH 3 CH 2 OH formation (91%) at a relatively low potential (-0.6 V), however, the active site structure that is responsible for such high activity and selectivity has yet to be understood. Here, in this paper, we demonstrate a computational investigation combining X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) simulations and a mechanistic study via density functional theory (DFT) to understand the catalyst structures of this Cu catalyst during electrocatalysis and the corresponding reaction mechanisms of the key products. An integrated computational and experimental XANES analysis depicted the dynamic evolution of the catalytic site during electrocatalysis. The as-prepared, atomically dispersed Cu catalyst aggregates and forms metallic clusters/nanoparticles under electrochemical condition, which then break down to smaller oxidized clusters after electrocatalysis. The formed Cu clusters/nanoparticles showed distinct catalytic activity and selectivity as a function of particle size based on the mechanistic investigation using DFT, which is consistent with experimental observations for catalyst samples with different Cu loadings. This comprehensive study which combines experimental and computational XANES investigation, mechanistic study via DFT calculations, and experimental performance of the catalysts, provides unprecedented dynamic and mechanistic insights into the supported atomically dispersed metal catalysts for CO 2 reduction. Such strategy and details gained can further guide discovery of novel catalyst materials for CO 2 electrochemical reduction.

spammR: an R package designed for analysis and integration of spatial multi-omic measurements

Spatial omics is a young and evolving field and as such shows rapid development of novel technologies and analysis methods to measure transcripts, proteins, metabolites, and post-translational modifications at high spatial resolution. These advances in technology have enabled the simultaneous generation of abundance profiles for multiple different omics types and associated microscopy imaging data, as well as their analysis in a spatial context. However, most analytical tools are designed for spatial transcriptomics platforms and are challenging to use in other contexts such as mass spectrometry-based measurements or metagenomics. To this end we present spammR (spatial analysis of multi-omics measurements in R), an R package that enables end-to-end analysis with a specific focus on mass-spectrometry derived spatial omics datasets with (1) smaller sample sizes and spatial sparsity of samples, (2) considerable missingness, and (3) no a-priori knowledge about proteins or genes of interest, relying on a fully data-driven approach.

Statistical-band-model analysis and integrated intensity for the 21.8 micrometer bands of HNO3 vapor

A large number of low-resolution quantitative spectra were obtained for a band-model analysis of 21.8-micrometer bands. The experimental investigations were conducted with pure nitric-acid vapor at 40 C, taking into account pressures in the range from a few torr to a pressure which is close to the saturation pressure. It is pointed out that the obtained data, in addition to those from the 11.3-micrometer band, can be used for an independent determination of the nitric acid vertical distribution in the stratosphere.
