Physics Briefing Book: Input for the 2026 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics

The European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) reflects the vision and presents concrete plans of the European particle physics community for advancing human knowledge in fundamental physics. The ESPP is updated every five-to-six years through a community-driven process. It commences with the submission of specific proposals and other input from the community at large, outlining projects envisioned for the near-, mid-, and long-term future. All submitted contributions are evaluated by the Physics Preparatory Group (PPG), and a preliminary analysis is presented at a Symposium meant to foster a broad community discussion on the scientific value and feasibility of the various ideas proposed. The outcomes of the analysis and the deliberations at the Symposium are synthesized in the current Briefing Book, which provides an important input in the deliberations of the Strategy recommendations by the European Strategy Group (ESG)

WaterTAP3 Model Input Data for NAWI's Eight Source Water Baseline Analyses

This folder contains the input data for the WaterTAP3 model that was used for the eight NAWI (National Alliance for Water Innovation) source water baselines studies published in the Environmental Science and Technology special issue: Technology Baselines and Innovation Priorities for Water Treatment and Supply. There are also eight other separate DAMS submissions, one per source water, that include the model results for the published studies. In this data submission, all model inputs across the eight baselines are included. The data structure and content are described in a README.txt file. For more details on how to use the data in WaterTAP3 please refer to the model documentation and GitHub site found at "WaterTAP3 Github" linked in the submission resources.

Automatic gain control circuit handles wide input range

Automatic gain control circuit for a radio receiver handles a wide range of input signal levels without overloading the output stage. The transistorized circuit maintains a relatively constant output by varying attenuation of the input signal.

Master control data handling program uses automatic data input

General purpose digital computer program is applicable for use with analysis programs that require basic data and calculated parameters as input. It is designed to automate input data preparation for flight control computer programs, but it is general enough to permit application in other areas.

Input gate circuit converted for use as linear amplifier

Commercially available integrated circuit that is marketed as a digital computer input gate circuit was converted to a linear amplifier in a microphone circuit that has high input impedance, low output impedance, low cost, and is small enough to fit on a standard printed circuit card.

Tool reconstructs data input points corresponding to first order output graph

Tool aids in graphic determination of input values for any first order lag system of known gain and time constant where the corresponding output function is displayed graphically and can be described by a first order differential equation. This tool permits a rapid reconstruction of input points.

Complementary-MOS binary counter with parallel-set inputs

Metal oxide semiconductor four-stage binary counter contains reset capability as well as four parallel-set inputs gated in by a logic signal. Parallel-set inputs permit setting the counter into any of sixteen possible states.

Ac-coupled ultrahigh input impedance amplifier

Input impedances of several hundred megohms and input capacitances of less than one picofarad are achieved with a conventional unity gain are buffer amplifier modified by addition of positive feedback. The circuit is stable over a temperature range of 25 to 70 deg C.

Optimal inputs for system identification

Identification criteria are presented for linear dynamic systems with and without process noise. With process noise, the state equations are replaced by the Kalman filter equations. If the identification performance index is expanded in a Taylor's series with respect to the parameters to be identified, then maximizing the weighting factor of the quadratic term with respect to the inputs will insure that an identification algorithm will converge more rapidly and to a more accurate result than with nonoptimal inputs. The expectation of this weighting factor is the Fisher information matrix, and its inverse is a lower bound for the covariance of the parameters. Direct and indirect methods of calculating the information matrix are presented for systems with and without process noise.

VLF/ELF input impedance of an arbitrarily oriented loop antenna in a cold collisionless multicomponent magnetoplasma.

A study is made of the input impedance Z of a small strip-loop antenna with arbitrary orientation in a cold collisionless uniform multicomponent magnetoplasma. Assuming a uniform current distribution, an integral expression for Z is derived which is valid for arbitrary values of driving frequency, plasma composition and density, loop orientation angle, and static magnetic field strength. The integral expression is evaluated numerically for the VLF/ELF range in a plasma modeled upon the inner magnetosphere. Approximate closed-form expressions for Z are also developed. It is found that the loop VLF/ELF input reactance is essentially identical to its free space self inductance. Also the loop radiation resistance is found to be a strong function of the loop orientation angle for frequencies near the lower-hybrid-resonance frequency or below the proton gyrofrequency.

An input adaptive, pursuit tracking model of the human opertor

Developed and evaluated is a simple model of the input adaptive behavior of the human operator (HO) in a pursuit tracking task in which the plant controlled consists of a pure gain. If it is assumed that the HO is approximately an optimal predictor using only position and velocity information, then there is a simple method of computing the values of the model parameters in terms of the autocorrelation function of the input signal. Experimental evidence indicates that the ability of the HO to use velocity information decreases with increasing signal velocity indicating that a biased estimator of the velocity weighting should be used. A suitable approximation is derived which has rapid convergence and low variance. The model thus derived is compared to actual subject transfer functions and is found to be in close agreement. In addition to tracking random processes the model can adapt to and track deterministic signals, such as sine waves, up to approximately the frequency at which human operators begin to track precognitively.
