Hybridized magnonic materials for THz frequency applications

The capability of magnons to hybridize and strongly couple with diverse excitations offers a promising avenue for realizing and controlling emergent properties that hold significant potential for applications in devices, circuits, and information processing. In this Letter, we present recent theoretical and experimental developments in magnon-based hybrid systems, focusing on the combination of magnon excitation in an antiferromagnet with other excitations, namely, plasmons in a topological insulator, phonons in a 2D antiferromagnetic (2D AFM), and photons. Here, the existence of THz frequency magnons, plasmons, and phonons makes magnon-based hybrid systems particularly appealing for high-operating-speed devices. In this context, we explore several directions to advance magnon hybrid systems, including strong coupling between a surface plasmon and magnon polariton in a topological insulator /AFM bilayer, a giant spin Nernst effect induced by magnon–phonon coupling in 2D AFMs, and control of magnon–photon coupling using spin torque.

Fidelity Comparison of Time-Bin and Fock State Encoding in Hybrid Quantum Systems Under Channel and Transduction Effects

Future quantum networks are expected to integrate a heterogeneous combination of quantum systems, owing to the diverse advantages offered by different physical platforms in terms of scalability, coherence times, and interfacing capabilities. Within the context of this emerging quantum communication paradigm, this paper presents an analytical comparison of two photonic encoding schemes—time-bin and Fock state (single rail)—in hybrid quantum systems where flying qubits are entangled with stationary matter qubits. We evaluate their resilience against fiber channel and quantum transduction effects by calculating the fidelity of the final states relative to their ideal forms. Employing the characteristic function approach, we derive analytical fidelity expressions and investigate their dependence on parameters such as transmissivity, noise levels, fiber length, and source generation success probability. Additionally, we simulate the scenario with a dedicated QuTiP software implementation to verify the validity of the theoretical models. Our findings reveal that due to its inherent single-mode structure, the Fock state encoding consistently outperforms time-bin encoding in fidelity, as this structure significantly minimizes susceptibility to losses compared to the two-mode nature of the time-bin scheme. This analysis offers valuable insights for future hybrid quantum communication and information processing applications.

Cyber-Physical Simulation of an Innovative Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell - Gas Turbine (SOEC-GT) Hybrid Energy System

To produce green hydrogen at scale and at low cost, the solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) systems would be tied to renewable power sources (mainly solar and wind), leveraging zero-carbon electricity at low prices and even nearly free during overgeneration scenarios. However, due to the intermittency of renewable power generation, the SOEC system is subjected to rapid load transitions that occur not only in diurnal cycles but also in short timeframes (e.g., sub-minute). This can result in fast degradation and thus greatly reduce the SOEC’s lifetime. Our team at the National Energy Technology Laboratory has demonstrated that the anode air flow can have a crucial role in SOEC thermal management. Typically, a higher air flow rate can help to mitigate the local temperature gradient distortion during rapid load transitions. To move a large amount of air, the gas turbine (GT; i.e., compressor-turbine-generator set) has been regarded as the most mature and efficient technology. In this presentation, we show the configuration and preliminary results of an innovative SOEC-GT hybrid energy system in a cyber-physical simulation (CPS) approach.

Direct modeling parameter signature analysis and failure mode prediction of physical systems using hybrid computer optimization

High speed automated identification and design of dynamic systems, both linear and nonlinear, are discussed. Special emphasis is placed on developing hardware and techniques which are applicable to practical problems. The basic modeling experiment and new results are described. Using the improvements developed successful identification of several systems, including a physical example as well as simulated systems, was obtained. The advantages of parameter signature analysis over signal signature analysis in go-no go testing of operational systems were demonstrated. The feasibility of using these ideas in failure mode prediction in operating systems was also investigated. An improved digital controlled nonlinear function generator was developed, de-bugged, and completely documented.

A Unique Hybrid Propulsion System Design for Large Space Boosters

A study was made of the application of hybrid rocket propulsion technology to large space boosters. Safety, reliability, cost, and performance comprised the evaluation criteria, in order of relative importance, for this study. The effort considered the so called classic hybrid design approach versus a novel approach which utilizes a fuel-rich gas generator for the fuel source. Other trades included various fuel/oxidizer combinations, pressure-fed versus pump fed oxidizer delivery systems, and reusable versus expandable booster systems. Following this initial trade study, a point design was generated. A gas generated-type fuel grain with pump fed liquid oxygen comprised the basis of this point design. This design study provided a mechanism for considering the means of implementing the gas generator approach for further defining details of the design. Subsequently, a system trade study was performed which determined the sensitivity of the design to various design parameters and predicted optimum values for these same parameters. The study concluded that a gas generator hybrid booster design offers enhanced safety and reliability over current of proposed solid booster designs while providing equal or greater performance levels. These improvements can be accomplished at considerably lower cost than for the liquid booster designs of equivalent capability.

Mars Hybrid Propulsion System Trajectory Analysis: Cargo Missions - Part II

NASA's Human Spaceflight Architecture Team is developing a reusable hybrid transportation architecture in which both chemical and electric propulsion systems are used to send crew and cargo to Mars destinations such as Phobos, Deimos, the surface of Mars, and other orbits around Mars. By combining chemical and electrical propulsion into a single spaceship and applying each where it is more effective, the hybrid architecture enables a series of Mars trajectories that are more fuel-efficient than an all chemical architecture without significant increases in flight times. This paper shows the feasibility of the hybrid transportation architecture to pre-deploy cargo to Mars and Phobos in support of the Evolvable Mars Campaign crew missions. The analysis shows that the hybrid propulsion stage is able to deliver all of the current manifested payload to Phobos and Mars through the first three crew missions. The conjunction class trajectory also allows the hybrid propulsion stage to return to Earth in a timely fashion so it can be reused for additional cargo deployment. The 1,100 days total trip time allows the hybrid propulsion stage to deliver cargo to Mars every other Earth-Mars transit opportunity. For the first two Mars surface mission in the Evolvable Mars Campaign, the short trip time allows the hybrid propulsion stage to be reused for three round-trip journeys to Mars, which matches the hybrid propulsion stage's designed lifetime for three round-trip crew missions to the Martian sphere of influence.

Taylor-Expansion-Based Robust Power Flow in Unbalanced Distribution Systems: A Hybrid Data-Aided Method

Traditional power flow methods often adopt certain assumptions designed for passive balanced distribution systems, thus lacking practicality for unbalanced operation. moreover, their computation accuracy and efficiency are heavily subject to unknown errors and bad data in measurements or prediction data of distributed energy resources (ders). to address these issues, this paper proposes a hybrid data-aided robust power flow algorithm in unbalanced distribution systems, which combines taylor series expansion knowledge with a data-driven regression technique. the proposed method initiates a linearization power flow model to derive an explicitly analytical solution by modified taylor expansion. to mitigate the approximation loss that surges due to the der integration and bad data, we further develop a data-aided robust support vector regression approach to estimate the errors efficiently. comparative analysis in the 13-bus and 123-bus ieee unbalanced feeders shows that the proposed hybrid algorithm achieves superior computational efficiency, with guaranteed accuracy and robustness against outliers.

Region-Based Stability Analysis of Resilient Distribution Systems with Hybrid Grid-Forming and Grid-Following Inverters

In this paper, distribution system stability considering mixed grid-forming (GFM) and grid-following (GFL) inverters is discussed. A holistic small-signal model of the distribution feeder accommodating both GFM and GFL inverters is derived. In contrast to conventional point-by-point stability analysis, a region-based stability assessment approach is proposed and implemented to evaluate small-signal system stability with both GFM and GFL controls. Furthermore, to enhance the computational efficiency, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) assisted Kernel Ridge Regression (KRR) approach is developed to obtain the stability region boundary. Therefore, with the derived stability region, the impact of critical parameters on system stability is intuitively shown, and more importantly, the relationship between the maximum penetration level and the corresponding feasible range of the selected control parameters can be quantified. The proposed approach has been validated using MATLAB/Simulink.

Ultra-Long Distance BOTDA Sensor System Employing Hybrid Amplification and Advanced Noise Reduction Techniques

Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA) sensor system play a pivotal role in distributed sensing, which enables precise measurements of strain and temperature across extensive fiber lengths. Nonetheless, challenges emerge as distances grow due to signal attenuation and noise interference resulting in measurement errors. This research offers a comprehensive strategy to extend the sensing range of BOTDA systems beyond 10’s of kilometers while maintaining high spatial resolutions. Such enhanced sensing is realized through the integration of distributed Raman amplification, inline amplification using erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA), and advanced noise reduction techniques. Leveraging inherent redundancy in measured data as a function of frequency and fiber distance, the non-local means (NLM) filter removes noise while preserving essential physical information. This approach proves particularly advantageous in BOTDA systems, where accurate measurement of Brillouin scattering signals is paramount for long-range sensing, while concurrently safeguarding high spatial resolutions. In summary, this research has shown a holistic exploration of extending BOTDA's distance sensing capabilities up to 150 km with spatial resolutions of 8 meters.

Hybrid propulsion system with a gyro component for economic and dynamic operation

The design of a hybrid drive with gyro components is described and its drive components for a medium class private car are discussed. The gyro component affects the short-period output of the drive by accelerating and slowing down and -- because of the mechanical transfer of kinetic energy between the gyro and the vehicle -- it affects also the energy balance in the case of intermittent operation. Energy can be taken in as desired either in the form of fuel or as fuel and current. A high energy recovery efficiency as well as the favorable operating range of the interval combustion engine makes it possible to reduce the fuel consumption per unit distance travelled to almost half that for a private car with a traditional engine.

Ultra-Long Distance BOTDA Sensor System Employing Hybrid Amplification and Advanced Noise Reduction Techniques

Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA) sensor systems play a pivotal role in distributed sensing, which enables precise measurements of strain and temperature across extensive fiber lengths. This research offers a comprehensive strategy to extend the sensing range of BOTDA systems beyond tens of kilometers while maintaining high spatial resolutions. Such enhanced sensing is realized through the integration of distributed Raman amplification, inline amplification using erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA), and advanced noise reduction techniques. Optimizing Raman pump and probe wave profiles ensures the robustness of Brillouin scattering signals, effectively countering attenuation-induced losses. Additionally, enhancing weak Brillouin signals by strategically placing EDFAs at optimal fiber locations keeps sensor sensitivity high. Leveraging inherent redundancy in measured data as a function of frequency and fiber distance, the non-local means (NLM) filter removes noise while preserving essential physical information. In summary, this research has shown a holistic exploration of extending BOTDA’s distance sensing capabilities up to 150 km with spatial resolutions of 8 meters.

Energy management systems for forecasted demand error compensation using hybrid energy storage system in nanogrid

This paper proposes an energy management system (EMS) for nanogrids to balance the power supply and forecasted demand in consideration of forecasting errors arising from high instantaneous demand. The proposed EMS employs a power-balancing optimization process for forecasted demand and a reference power modulation strategy for forecasting errors. This power-balancing optimization utilizes nanogrid sources, such as photovoltaics, fuel cells, and batteries, to meet forecasted demand and a supercapacitor charging process to overcome issues with a low energy density. The proposed reference power modulation strategy is utilized to allocate power from a hybrid energy storage system consisting of a battery and supercapacitor in order to compensate for forecasting errors. In addition, this proposed strategy considers battery and supercapacitor constraints such as the power changing rate and total power limitations. Further, the power-balancing optimization process also operates at faster sampling rate than the reference power modulation process in order to improve the computational efficiency. The performance of the proposed EMS is evaluated using real data obtained from the Korea Electric Power Exchange.
