SYSTID - A flexible tool for the analysis of communication systems.

Description of the System Time Domain Simulation (SYSTID) computer-aided analysis program which is specifically structured for communication systems analysis. The SYSTID program is user oriented so that very little knowledge of computer techniques and very little programming ability are required for proper application. The program is designed so that the user can go from a system block diagram to an accurate simulation by simply programming a single English language statement for each block in the system. The mathematical and functional models available in the SYSTID library are presented. An example problem is given which illustrates the ease of modeling communication systems. Examples of the outputs available are presented, and proposed improvements are summarized.

Transfer-function-parameter estimation from frequency response data: A FORTRAN program

A FORTRAN computer program designed to fit a linear transfer function model to given frequency response magnitude and phase data is presented. A conjugate gradient search is used that minimizes the integral of the absolute value of the error squared between the model and the data. The search is constrained to insure model stability. A scaling of the model parameters by their own magnitude aids search convergence. Efficient computer algorithms result in a small and fast program suitable for a minicomputer. A sample problem with different model structures and parameter estimates is reported.

Effects of small angle of attack on the radiating viscous shock layer solutions for Jovian entry

Results are presented for the laminar and turbulent flows of a reacting mixture of hydrogen-helium in chemical equilibrium over blunted cones of large half angles at small angles of attack. The freestream conditions correspond to a typical Jovian entry trajectory point. Radiative heat flux is calculated by using a realistic step-function model for the absorption coefficient. An investigation is also made to determine whether a blunted cone at small angles of attack can be replaced by equivalent bodies at zero angle of attack for the purpose of calculating the shock shapes, surface pressure, skin friction and heating rates.

A telescopic jib for continuous adjustment

For special space applications, e.g. for experiments distant from any orbital platforms or manipulators a new kind of jibs with extreme extension capacity has to be designed. Considering the requirements, the telescopic principle is found to be the most promising. For the choice of the stiff structure, design criteria are evaluated. Special effort deals with the drive system. An electromechanical system can satisfy the requirements. First results of the development of such a drive are presented. The most significant features are: A telescopic assembly of tubes which can be mutually moved by a short spindle in the center of the package. An elastically suspended screw is located at the bottom of each tube. For the jib extension, these screws will be linked with the spindle. The control of their sequence and the adjustment of tubes in mutual end positions are performed by latches. A functional model proved the basic idea.

Preliminary results of the mission profile life test of a 30 cm Hg bombardment thruster

The paper deals with some preliminary results of the Mission Profile Life Test planned to conduct a program of long-term test segments of 30-cm diameter thrusters and power processing units under computer control. Thruster performance data and other operational characteristics taken at various times during a test segment are compared and the results are evaluated in light of the life-timing mechanisms. Thruster control algorithms are also presented. The first test segment completed 2700 hr of a planned 4000 hr test with a J-series 30-cm thruster. The last 1600 hr used a functional model power processing unit (PPU) operated in vacuum. The thruster-PPU was controlled by a computer with software developed to control start-ups, throttling, and variety of off-normal conditions.

Reduced power processor requirements for the 30-cm diameter HG ion thruster

The characteristics of power processors strongly impact the overall performance and cost of electric propulsion systems. A program was initiated to evaluate simplifications of the thruster-power processor interface requirements. The power processor requirements are mission dependent with major differences arising for those missions which require a nearly constant thruster operating point (typical of geocentric and some inbound planetary missions) and those requiring operation over a large range of input power (such as outbound planetary missions). This paper describes the results of tests which have indicated that as many as seven of the twelve power supplies may be eliminated from the present Functional Model Power Processor used with 30-cm diameter Hg ion thrusters.

Extended operating range of the 30-cm ion thruster with simplified power processor requirements

A two grid 30 cm diameter mercury ion thruster was operated with only six power supplies over the baseline J series thruster power throttle range with negligible impact on thruster performance. An analysis of the functional model power processor showed that the component mass and parts count could be reduced considerably and the electrical efficiency increased slightly by only replacing power supplies with relays. The input power, output thrust, and specific impulse of the thruster were then extended, still using six supplies, from 2660 watts, 0.13 newtons, and 2980 seconds to 9130 watts, 0.37 newtons, and 3820 seconds, respectively. Increases in thrust and power density enable reductions in the number of thrusters and power processors required for most missions. Preliminary assessments of the impact of thruster operation at increased thrust and power density on the discharge characteristics, performance, and lifetime of the thruster were also made.

An antenna fine pointing mechanism

SOFA, a device designed for the highly accurate 2 axis pointing of antenna or any feature installed on a spacecraft is described. The major characteristic of this system is complete freedom from friction and wear out, resulting in numerous advantages, such as outstanding precision, virtually endless service life, high simplicity, and reliability. The sizing method is described and performances are analyzed. The results from analogue simulations are presented. A functional model of the electrical and mechanical parts was built and subjected to on ground tests using a 2 axis platform simulating the spacecraft's motions. The results obtained are thoroughly in keeping with the predictions and simulations. Various possible applications of the SOFA system are mentioned.

Advanced dc motor controller for battery-powered electric vehicles

A motor generation set is connected to run from the dc source and generate a voltage in the traction motor armature circuit that normally opposes the source voltage. The functional feasibility of the concept is demonstrated with tests on a Proof of Principle System. An analog computer simulation is developed, validated with the results of the tests, applied to predict the performance of a full scale Functional Model dc Controller. The results indicate high efficiencies over wide operating ranges and exceptional recovery of regenerated energy. The new machine integrates both motor and generator on a single two bearing shaft. The control strategy produces a controlled bidirectional plus or minus 48 volts dc output from the generator permitting full control of a 96 volt dc traction motor from a 48 volt battery, was designed to control a 20 hp traction motor. The controller weighs 63.5 kg (140 lb.) and has a peak efficiency of 90% in random driving modes and 96% during the SAE J 227a/D driving cycle.

Extended operating range of the 30-cm ion thruster with simplified power processor requirements

A 30-cm-diameter Hg ion thruster similar in design to the J-series thruster was operated at fixed conditions with only five power supplies and was throttled over the baseline power range with six supplies. An analysis of the functional model power processor showed that the component mass and parts count would be reduced by about 14 and 35% respectively, and the electrical efficiency would be increased about 1.5% by replacing power supplies with relays. By introducing new circuit designs, additional reductions in the component mass and parts, as well as an increase in electrical efficiency would be expected. The impact on thruster performance of reducing the number of power supplies was to lower the propellant utilization efficiency about 1.0% and raise the electrical efficiency values from 0.2 to 1.3% over the throttle range.

Practical application of power conditioning to electric propulsion for passenger vehicles

A functional model 15 HP, 120 volt, 4-pole, 7600 r.p.m. samarium-cobalt permanent magnet type brushless dc motor-transistorized power conditioner unit was designed, fabricated and tested for specific use in propulsion of electric passenger vehicles. This new brushless motor system, including its power conditioner package, has a number of important advantages over existing systems such as reduced weight and volume, higher reliability, and potential for improvements in efficiencies. These advantages are discussed in this paper in light of the substantial test data collected during experimentation with the newly developed conditioner motor propulsion system. Details of the power conditioner design philosophy and particulars are given in the paper. Also, described here are the low level electronic design and operation in relation to the remainder of the system.

Monte Carlo studies of ocean wind vector measurements by SCATT: Objective criteria and maximum likelihood estimates for removal of aliases, and effects of cell size on accuracy of vector winds

The scatterometer on the National Oceanic Satellite System (NOSS) is studied by means of Monte Carlo techniques so as to determine the effect of two additional antennas for alias (or ambiguity) removal by means of an objective criteria technique and a normalized maximum likelihood estimator. Cells nominally 10 km by 10 km, 10 km by 50 km, and 50 km by 50 km are simulated for winds of 4, 8, 12 and 24 m/s and incidence angles of 29, 39, 47, and 53.5 deg for 15 deg changes in direction. The normalized maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) is correct a large part of the time, but the objective criterion technique is recommended as a reserve, and more quickly computed, procedure. Both methods for alias removal depend on the differences in the present model function at upwind and downwind. For 10 km by 10 km cells, it is found that the MLE method introduces a correlation between wind speed errors and aspect angle (wind direction) errors that can be as high as 0.8 or 0.9 and that the wind direction errors are unacceptably large, compared to those obtained for the SASS for similar assumptions.

The Effect of Sea-Surface Sun Glitter on Microwave Radiometer Measurements

A relatively simple model for the microwave brightness temperature of sea surface Sun glitter is presented. The model is an accurate closeform approximation for the fourfold Sun glitter integral. The model computations indicate that Sun glitter contamination of on orbit radiometer measurements is appreciable over a large swath area. For winds near 20 m/s, Sun glitter affects the retrieval of environmental parameters for Sun angles as large as 20 to 25 deg. The model predicted biases in retrieved wind speed and sea surface temperature due to neglecting Sun glitter are consistent with those experimentally observed in SEASAT SMMR retrievals. A least squares retrieval algorithm that uses a combined sea and Sun model function shows the potential of retrieving accurate environmental parameters in the presence of Sun glitter so long as the Sun angles and wind speed are above 5 deg and 2 m/s, respectively.
