Compact assembly generates plastic foam, inflates flotation bag

Device for generating plastic foam consists of an elastomeric bag and two containers with liquid resin and a liquid catalyst. When the walls of the containers are ruptured the liquids come into contact producing foam which inflates the elastomeric bag.

Soluble undercoating facilitates removal of foamed-in-place insulation

Foamed-in-place insulation can be removed and reused by coating the surface with a soluble peel coat before applying the foam mixture. Removal of the insulation is effected by slitting it and pouring a solvent in the slit to dissolve the peel coat. The insulation can then be stripped off intact.

Fire retardant foams developed to suppress fuel fires

Heat insulating polyurethane foam retards and suppresses fuel fires. Uniformly dispersed in the foam is a halogenated polymer capable of splitting off hydrogen halide upon heating and charring of the polyurethane.

Foaming-electrolyte fuel cell

Foam structure feeds fuel gas solution into electrolyte. Fuel gas reacts at static, three-phase interface between fuel gas, electrolyte, and electrode material. The foam forms an electrical contact between main body of electrolyte and the electrode, and aids in removal of by-products of the chemical reaction.

Fire retardant polyisocyanurate foam

Fire retardant properties of low density polymer foam are increased. Foam has pendant nitrile groups which form thermally-stable heterocyclic structures at temperature below degradation temperature of urethane linkages.

Evaluating foam heterogeneity

New analytical tool is available to calculate the degree of foam heterogeneity based on the measurement of gas diffusivity values. Diffusion characteristics of plastic foam are described by a system of differential equations based on conventional diffusion theory. This approach saves research and computation time in studying mass or heat diffusion problems.

The performance of lightweight plastic foams developed for fire safety

The use of a low density, polyurethane based foam to suppress a fire and to provide protection for the structure of an aircraft or spacecraft is discussed. The mechanism by which foams provide protection from heat and create a nonflammable surface is described. Various materials and their application to specific types of structures are examined.

Advances in cryogenic foam insulations.

Description of a discretely oriented thread-reinforced polyurethane foam thermal insulation system for liquid hydrogen fuel tanks. The 3-D foam and glass liner composite is designed to be adhesively bonded to the inside surface of the tank wall and to be in direct contact with liquid hydrogen. All elements of this insulation composite are capable of sustaining the loads and environmental conditions imposed by testing under simulated Space Shuttle vehicle requirements at temperatures between -423 and +350 F.

The emissivity of sea foam at microwave frequencies.

A consistent picture of the emission characteristics of sea foam at microwave frequencies has emerged from a survey of published radiometric measurements. The results are summarized, as functions of frequency and angle, by means of simple equations. Available data on the reflection properties of foam are also examined and shown to be qualitatively, but not quantitatively, in agreement with the radiometric results.

Design and development of polyphenylene oxide foam as a reusable internal insulation for LH2 tanks, phase 2

PPO form was tested for mechanical strength, for the effects of 100 thermal cycles from 450 K (359 F) to 21 K (-423 F) and for gas flow resistance characteristics. PPO foam panels were investigated for density variations, methods for joining panels were studied and panel joint thermal test specimens were fabricated. The range of foam panel thickness under investigation was extended to include 7 mm (0.3 in) and 70 mm (2.8 in) panels which also were tested for thermal performance.

Thermally-stable, syntactic pyrrone foams

Foam formulations may be readily emplaced in honeycomb structures after heating to soft, doughlike consistency and forcing heated mixture into honeycomb cells. Final cure can be accomplished by simple oven cure, with no need for containment or restriction of foam formulation during cure.

Low density polybenzimidazole foams

A description is presented of the relationship between prepolymer purity, processing parameters, and additives. The studies included the investigation of the effects of an addition of surfactants and fibers. Changes in foam characteristics due to variations in the cure and postcure schedules were also explored. A direct relationship was established between the amount of fiber additive and the resulting foam density.
