Search for supersymmetry in final states with two or three soft leptons and missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for supersymmetry in events with two or three low-momentum leptons and missing transverse momentum is performed. The search uses proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected in the three-year period 2016–2018 by the CMS experiment at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 137 fb -1 . The data are found to be in agreement with expectations from standard model processes. The results are interpreted in terms of electroweakino and top squark pair production with a small mass difference between the produced supersymmetric particles and the lightest neutralino. For the electroweakino interpretation, two simplified models are used, a wino-bino model and a higgsino model. Exclusion limits at 95% confidence level are set on $^{\sim0}_{χ2}/^{\sim±}_{χ1}$ masses up to 275 GeV for a mass difference of 10 GeV in the wino-bino case, and up to 205(150) GeV for a mass difference of 7.5 (3) GeV in the higgsino case. The results for the higgsino are further interpreted using a phenomenological minimal supersymmetric standard model, excluding the higgsino mass parameter μ up to 180 GeV with the bino mass parameter M 1 at 800 GeV. In the top squark interpretation, exclusion limits are set at top squark masses up to 540 GeV for four-body top squark decays and up to 480 GeV for chargino-mediated decays with a mass difference of 30 GeV.

Search for direct top squark pair production in events with one lepton, jets, and missing transverse momentum at 13 TeV with the CMS experiment

A search for direct top squark pair production is presented. The search is based on proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC during 2016, 2017, and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{−1}$. The search is carried out using events with a single isolated electron or muon, multiple jets, and large transverse momentum imbalance. The observed data are consistent with the expectations from standard model processes. Exclusions are set in the context of simplified top squark pair production models. Depending on the model, exclusion limits at 95% confidence level for top squark masses up to 1.2 TeV are set for a massless lightest supersymmetric particle, assumed to be the neutralino. For models with top squark masses of 1 TeV, neutralino masses up to 600 GeV are excluded.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Erratum to: Search for the HH → $ b\overline{b}b\overline{b} $ process via vector-boson fusion production using proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

One correction is noted for the paper. A wrong cross-section was used for the theory prediction in figure 6 due to not taking into account the VHH contamination properly in the rescaling formula for the signal samples. The change in the theory prediction leads to stricter exclusion limits on the di-vector-boson–di-Higgs-boson coupling modifier κ 2V . The observed excluded region corresponds to κ 2V < –0.43 and κ 2V > 2.56, while the expected exclusion is κ 2V < –0.55 and κ 2V > 2.72. Erratum JHEP 01 (2021) 145 fixed the description in the text but contains the uncorrected figure. The correct figure is shown in the new erratum.

Search for top squark pair production in a final state with at least one hadronically decaying tau lepton in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search for pair production of the supersymmetric partner of the top quark, the top squark, in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV is presented in final states containing at least one hadronically decaying tau lepton and large missing transverse momentum. This final state is highly sensitive to scenarios of supersymmetry in which the decay of the top squark to tau leptons is enhanced. The search uses a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$, which was recorded with the CMS detector during 2016–2018. No significant excess is observed with respect to the standard model predictions. Exclusion limits at 95% confidence level on the masses of the top squark and the lightest neutralino are presented under the assumptions of simplified models. The results probe top squark masses up to 1150 GeV for a nearly massless neutralino. This search covers a relatively less explored parameter space in the context of supersymmetry, and the exclusion limit is the most stringent to date for the model considered here.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Search for dark QCD with emerging jets in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search for “emerging jets” produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is performed using data collected by the CMS experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. This search examines a hypothetical dark quantum chromodynamics (QCD) sector that couples to the standard model (SM) through a scalar mediator. The scalar mediator decays into an SM quark and a dark sector quark. As the dark sector quark showers and hadronizes, it produces long-lived dark mesons that subsequently decay into SM particles, resulting in a jet, known as an emerging jet, with multiple displaced vertices. This search looks for pair production of the scalar mediator at the LHC, which yields events with two SM jets and two emerging jets at leading order. The results are interpreted using two dark sector models with different flavor structures, and exclude mediator masses up to 1950 (1950) GeV for an unflavored (flavor-aligned) dark QCD model. The unflavored results surpass a previous search for emerging jets by setting the most stringent mediator mass exclusion limits to date, while the flavor-aligned results provide the first direct mediator mass exclusion limits to date.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Search for single production of a vector-like T quark decaying to a top quark and a neutral scalar boson in the lepton+jets final state in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A search for single production of a vector-like T quark with charge 2e/3, decaying to a top quark and a neutral scalar boson is presented. The boson can be a standard model Higgs boson (H) or a new scalar boson (ϕ). In the first case, a branching fraction of 25% is assumed for the decay T → tH, while in the second case the T quark is assumed to decay exclusively to tϕ. The top quark is identified via its lepton+jets decay, and the neutral boson via its decay into a bottom quark-antiquark pair. Final states with Lorentz-boosted topologies are considered and machine-learning techniques are exploited for optimal event classification. The analysis uses data collected by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 recorded at the CERN LHC in 2016–2018. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of cross section and branching fraction for a T quark in a narrow-width approximation. They vary between 14.7 and 0.1 fb, for T quark masses in the range 1.3–3.0 TeV and ϕ boson masses in the range 25–250 GeV. These are the first exclusion limits set on the production of a single T quark decaying into a top quark and a new neutral scalar boson. For the decay channel into a top quark and a standard model Higgs boson, the results provide the best limits on production cross sections to date, for T quark masses above 2 TeV.

Measurement of light-by-light scattering and the Breit-Wheeler process, and search for axion-like particles in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

Measurements of light-by-light scattering (LbL, γγ → γγ) and the Breit-Wheeler process (BW, γγ → e + e − ) are reported in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV. The data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb −1 , was collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2018. Events with an exclusively produced γγ or e + e − pair with invariant masses m γγ,ee > 5 GeV, along with other fiducial criteria, are selected. The measured BW fiducial production cross section, σ fid (γγ → e + e − ) = 263.5 ± 1.8(stat) ± 17.8(syst) μb, as well as the differential distributions for various kinematic observables, are in agreement with leading-order quantum electrodynamics predictions complemented with final-state photon radiation. The measured differential BW cross sections allow discrimination between different theoretical descriptions of the photon flux of the lead ion. In the LbL final state, 26 exclusive diphoton candidate events are observed compared with 12.0 ± 2.9 expected for the background. Combined with previous results, the observed significance of the LbL signal with respect to the background-only hypothesis is above five standard deviations. The measured fiducial LbL scattering cross section, σ fid (γγ → γγ) = 107 ± 24(stat) ± 13(syst) nb, is in agreement with next- to-leading-order predictions. Limits on the production of axion-like particles coupled to photons are set over the mass range 5–100 GeV, including the most stringent limits to date in the range of 5–10 GeV.

Phenomenology of inclusive $ \overline{B}\to {X}_s{\mathrm{\ell}}^{+}{\mathrm{\ell}}^{-} $ for the Belle II era

With the first data being recorded at Belle II, we are at the brink of a new era in quark flavour physics. The many exciting new opportunities for Belle II include a full angular analysis of inclusive B ¯ → X s ℓ + ℓ - which has the potential to reveal new physics, in particular by its interplay with the exclusive b → s ℓ + ℓ - counterparts studied extensively at LHCb. In this paper, we present fully updated Standard Model predictions for all angular observables necessary for this endeavour. These predictions are tailored to Belle II and include an elaborate study of the treatment of collinear photons which become crucial when aiming for the highest precision. In addition, we present a phenomenological study of the potential for Belle II to reveal possible new physics in the inclusive decay channel, both in an independent manner and in combination with exclusive modes.

Structural characterization and biological activity of an α-glucan from the mollusk Marcia hiantina (Lamarck, 1818)

Marcia hiantina (Mollusca, Bivalvia) (Lamarck, 1818), is an edible clam mainly distributed along the tropical coastal regions. Recent researches have demonstrated that clams can possess compounds, including polysaccharides, with a wide range of biological actions including antioxidant, immunomodulatory and antitumor activities. Here an α-glucan was isolated from M. hiantina by hot water, purified by anion exchange chromatography, and its structure was characterized by a combination of multiple nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods (1D 1 H, 1 H- 1 H COSY, 1 H- 1 H TOCSY, 1 H- 1 H NOESY, 1 H- 13 C HSQC and 1 H- 13 C HSQC-NOESY spectra), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and high performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC). The analysis from NMR, monosaccharide composition, methylation analyses and HPSEC combined with multi angle light scattering (MALS) of M. hiantina-derived α-glycan confirmed a branched polysaccharide exclusively composed of glucose (Glc), mostly 4-linked in its backbone, branched occasionally at 6-positions, and having a molecular weight of ~ 570 kDa. The mollusk α-glucan was subjected to four cell-based assays: (i) viability of three cell lines (RAW264.7, HaCaT, and HT-29), (ii) activity on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced prostaglandin production in RAW264.7 cells, (iii) inhibitory activities of in H 2 O 2 - and LPS-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in HMC3 cells, and (iv) HaCaT cell proliferation. Furthermore, results have indicated no cytotoxicity, potent inhibition of both H 2 O 2 - and LPS-induced ROS, and potent cell proliferative activity.

Dimension-adaptive machine learning-based quantum state reconstruction

Here, we introduce an approach for performing quantum state reconstruction on systems of n qubits using a machine learning-based reconstruction system trained exclusively on m qubits, where m ≥ n. This approach removes the necessity of exactly matching the dimensionality of a system under consideration with the dimension of a model used for training. We demonstrate our technique by performing quantum state reconstruction on randomly sampled systems of one, two, and three qubits using machine learning-based methods trained exclusively on systems containing at least one additional qubit. The reconstruction time required for machine learning-based methods scales significantly more favorably than the training time; hence this technique can offer an overall saving of resources by leveraging a single neural network for dimension-variable state reconstruction, obviating the need to train dedicated machine learning systems for each Hilbert space.

FG nucleoporins feature unique patterns that distinguish them from other IDPs

FG nucleoporins (FG Nups) are intrinsically disordered proteins and are the putative regulators of nucleocytoplasmic transport. They allow fast, yet selective, transport of molecules through the nuclear pore complex, but the underlying mechanism of nucleocytoplasmic transport is not yet fully discovered. As a result, FG Nups have been the subject of extensive research in the past two decades. Although most studies have been focused on analyzing the conformation and function of FG Nups from a biophysical standpoint, some recent studies have investigated the sequence-function relationship of FG Nups, with a few investigating amino acid sequences of a large number of FG Nups to understand common characteristics that might enable their function. Previously, we identified an evolutionarily conserved feature in FG Nup sequences, which are extended subsequences with low charge density, containing only positive charges, and located toward the N-terminus of FG Nups. We named these patterns longest positive like charge regions (lpLCRs). These patterns are specific to positively charged residues, and negatively charged residues do not demonstrate such a pattern. In this study, we compare FG Nups with other disordered proteins obtained from the DisProt and UniProt database in terms of presence of lpLCRs. Our results show that the lpLCRs are virtually exclusive to FG Nups and are not observed in other disordered proteins. Also, lpLCRs are what differentiate FG Nups from DisProt proteins in terms of charge distribution, meaning that excluding lpLCRs from the sequences of FG Nups make them similar to DisProt proteins in terms of charge distribution. We also previously showed the biophysical effect of lpLCRs in conformation of FG Nups. The results of this study are in line with our previous findings and imply that lpLCRs are virtually exclusive and functionally significant characteristics of FG Nups and nucleocytoplasmic transport.

Data efficiency assessment of generative adversarial networks in energy applications

This study investigates the data requirements of generative artificial intelligence (AI), particularly generative adversarial networks (GANs), for reliable data augmentation in energy applications. Generative AI, though seen as a solution to data limitations, requires substantial data to learn meaningful distributions—a challenge often overlooked. This study addresses the challenge through synthetic data generation for critical heat flux (CHF) and power grid demand, focusing on renewable and nuclear energy. Two variants of GAN employed are conditional GAN (cGAN) and Wasserstein GAN (wGAN). Our findings include the strong dependency of GAN on data size, with performance declining on smaller datasets and varying performance when generalizing to unseen experiments. Mass flux and heated length significantly influence CHF predictions. wGAN is more robust to feature exclusion, making it suitable for constrained synthetic data generation. In energy demand forecasting, wGAN performed well for solar, wind, and load predictions. Longer lookback hours and larger datasets improved predictions, especially for load power. Seasonal variations posed challenges, with wGAN achieving a relatively high error of Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) of 0.32 for load power prediction, compared to RMSE of 0.07 under same-season conditions. Feature exclusions impacted cGAN the most, while wGAN showed greater robustness. This study concludes that, while generative AI is effective for data augmentation, it requires substantial data and careful training to generate realistic synthetic data and generalize to new experiments in engineering applications.

Land-use history, fire regime, and large-mammal herbivory affect deer-preferred plant diversity in longleaf pine woodlands

Since ecological systems often experience multiple disturbances, understanding changes in important ecological interactions, such as plant-herbivore interactions, may require studies capable of disentangling the unique and interactive effects of multiple forms of disturbance. For example, understanding how mammalian herbivores affect plant communities may require understanding how widespread past disturbances, such as agricultural land use, interact with contemporary disturbances, such as prescribed fire. Here, we tested if past agricultural land use and contemporary fire regime modified the effects of mammalian herbivory on focal plant communities by measuring the richness of plant species preferred by deer at 26 longleaf pine woodlands containing paired open and large-mammal exclusion plots. Land-use history significantly affected the community composition of deer-preferred species, and focal species were 8.19 times more likely to be present in post-agricultural sites than non-agricultural sites. Large-mammal herbivory only affected plant species richness in woodlands with low fire frequencies wherein focal species were on average 2.23 times more likely to be present in exclusion plots than open plots. These results suggest that past and present disturbances can mediate contemporary plant-animal interactions and may explain spatial patterns in the intensity of large-mammal herbivory. Our findings also suggest that common management practices, such as use of prescribed burns, may indirectly promote plant species richness by reducing deer herbivory.

Modifying the resolving cysteine affects the structure and hydrogen peroxide reactivity of peroxiredoxin 2

Peroxiredoxin 2 (Prdx2) is a thiol peroxidase with an active site Cys (C52) that reacts rapidly with H 2 O 2 and other peroxides. The sulfenic acid product condenses with the resolving Cys (C172) to form a disulfide which is recycled by thioredoxin or GSH via mixed disulfide intermediates or undergoes hyperoxidation to the sulfinic acid. C172 lies near the C terminus, outside the active site. It is not established whether structural changes in this region, such as mixed disulfide formation, affect H 2 O 2 reactivity. To investigate, we designed mutants to cause minimal (C172S) or substantial (C172D and C172W) structural disruption. Stopped flow kinetics and mass spectrometry showed that mutation to Ser had minimal effect on rates of oxidation and hyperoxidation, whereas Asp and Trp decreased both by 100-fold. To relate to structural changes, we solved the crystal structures of reduced WT and C172S Prdx2. The WT structure is highly similar to that of the published hyperoxidized form. C172S is closely related but more flexible and as demonstrated by size exclusion chromatography and analytical ultracentrifugation, a weaker decamer. Size exclusion chromatography and analytical ultracentrifugation showed that the C172D and C172W mutants are also weaker decamers than WT, and small-angle X-ray scattering analysis indicated greater flexibility with partially unstructured regions consistent with C-terminal unfolding. We propose that these structural changes around C172 negatively impact the active site geometry to decrease reactivity with H 2 O 2 . This is relevant for Prdx turnover as intermediate mixed disulfides with C172 would also be disruptive and could potentially react with peroxides before resolution is complete.

UO2 microstructural evolutions induced by Ni, Mo, and W dopants for intentional forensics

The concept of tagging nuclear fuel with a chemical barcode to enable forensics analysis across the nuclear fuel cycle is an area of active investigation, particularly to ensure fabrication viability without disrupting current fuel performance. This study explored the feasibility of using Ni, Mo, and W isotopic double-spikes as dopants in UO2 fuel from the perspective of fuel fabrication. Doped UO2 pellets were produced using conventional fuel fabrication processes, including powder mixing, sieving, pressing, and sintering in a reductive atmosphere. Two composition levels, 100 and 1000 ppm, were evaluated for each dopant element with isotopic double-spike configurations. For the Ni system, additional dopant concentrations of 250 and 500 ppm were produced with nonperturbed isotopic ratios. The results demonstrated that successful incorporation of Ni, Mo, and W double-spikes into UO2 pellets occurred with minimal shift in final density or dopant loss during pellet fabrication. Isotopic analysis confirmed the presence of the double-spike signature even when diluted with natural isotopic material in ratio of 1:5 in the fabrication process. Microstructural examinations revealed different impacts on grain size compared with undoped UO2. This study showed that Ni incorporation up to ∼500 ppm promoted moderate grain growth, whereas the Mo and W systems caused grain size reduction at all concentrations. Changes in the UO2 lattice parameter as a function of composition were detected exclusively for Ni up to 500 ppm, indicating that the Ni solid solution was the main factor for the observed grain growth. Insoluble (Mo and W) or supersaturated (Ni > 500 ppm) conditions produced grain size reduction. The Ni-doped pellets in the solution range resulted in a final microstructure within fuel specifications, demonstrating its potential benefits of employing complex dopant systems for potential nuclear forensic applications.

Search for the rare decay of the W boson into a pion and a photon in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}$=13TeV

A search is performed for the rare decay W ± → π ± γ in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV . Data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb - 1 were collected during 2016 to 2018 with the CMS detector. This analysis exploits a novel search strategy based on W boson production in top quark pair events. An inclusive search for the W ± → π ± γ decay is not optimal at the LHC because of the high trigger thresholds. Instead, a trigger selection is exploited in which the W boson originating from one of the top quarks is used to tag the event in a leptonic decay. The W boson emerging from the other top quark is used to search for the W ± → π ± γ signature. Such decays are characterized by an isolated track pointing to a large energy deposit, and by an isolated photon of large transverse momentum. The presence of b quark jets reduces the background from the hadronization of light-flavor quarks and gluons. The W ± → π ± γ decay is not observed. An upper exclusion limit is set to this branching fraction, corresponding to 1.50 × 10 - 5 at 95% confidence level, whereas the expected upper exclusion limit is 0.85 - 0.29 + 0.52 × 10 - 5 .

Multi-decade high-resolution regional hindcasts for wave energy resource characterization in U.S. coastal waters

Long-term, high-resolution, regional wave hindcast datasets were generated using unstructured-grid Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) models for the U.S. coastal waters to support nearshore wave energy development in the U.S. including those bordering U.S. territorial islands. The model domains resolved the entire U.S. exclusive economic zones, with a spatial resolution of approximately 200 m nearshore. The regional SWAN models were driven by the global WAVEWATCH III® model outputs and run for a 42-year period from 1979 to 2020. Extensive model validations were performed using buoy observations and altimeter data. Regional resource characterization was performed based on hindcast data points at 2 km from shore and along the 100 m isobath. Aggregations of wave resource parameters were produced, and spatial and seasonal variations were analyzed for all the regions. Wave resource metrics recommended by international standards, including a 3-hour time series of six resource parameters, hourly frequency- and directionally resolved wave spectra at selected “virtual buoy” locations, and average-annual values of omni-directional wave power, significant wave height, and energy period are publicly disseminated through an Amazon Web Service and a Marine Energy Atlas web application tool to facilitate wave energy research and a wide range of coastal ocean applications.

Site-Selective Atomic Layer Deposition at Thermally Generated Surface Oxygen Vacancies on Rutile TiO 2

Unique atomic arrangements (i.e., defects) on material surfaces may exhibit distinctive reactivity that affords opportunities for selective surface chemistry exclusively at those sites. While theoretically appealing, site-selective atomic layer deposition (ALD) processes remain largely unrealized experimentally. Here we provide evidence for site-selective ALD that exclusively targets oxygen vacancies thermally generated at the surface of TiO 2 single crystals. High-resolution in situ ellipsometry reveals the nucleation behavior of dimethylaluminum isopropoxide (DMAI) and water at process conditions precisely tuned for selective hydroxylation of surface defects. An island growth model for nucleation and atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging are consistent with a site-selective growth mechanism that depends on the surface oxygen vacancy density. This approach to direct ALD reactions at defective surface sites may provide future opportunities for targeted remediation of electronically imperfect interfaces.
