Advanced infrared photomultiplier

Photocathode for the 8500 angstrom through 9000 angstrom range, improving efficiency by an order of magnitude, is achieved with a gallium arsenide cesium oxide photocathode. Protection of the GaAs surface from contamination during bake-out is another important function.

Hybrid coding systems study

The state of efficiency improvement available with high speed decoders presently in operation or under development is summarized. The required ratio of bit-energy-to-noise-density is given in each case for bit error probabilities.

A magnetically focused image tube employing an opaque photocathode

Image converter has been developed which uses opaque photocathode for improved efficiency. Device is easier to fabricate than previous semi-transparent photocathode converters and uses compounds from Groups 3-5 that are responsive to wave-lengths between ultraviolet (approximately 100 nm) and near infrared region (approximately 1000 nm).

Preliminary assessment of geological applications of ERTS-1 imagery from selected areas of the Canadian Arctic

An assessment of geological applications of ERTS-1 imagery from selected areas of the Canadian Arctic is presented. The three levels of interpretation which may be recognized and employed to derive information from a single image or data format are outlined. It is stated that one immediate benefit from ERTS will be improved efficiency in planning for and operation of programs of regional geological mapping. Imagery of various areas of Canada are presented to show applications to regional mapping.

Solid state, S-band, power amplifier

The final design and specifications for a solid state, S-band, power amplifier is reported. Modifications from a previously proposed design were incorporated to improve efficiency and meet input overdrive and noise floor requirements. Reports on the system design, driver amplifier, power amplifier, and voltage and current limiter are included along with a discussion of the testing program.

Effect of solidity on rocket pump inducer performance.

Experimental and theoretical results of the effect of solidity (chord/spacing) on flow properties, pressure rise and efficiency of a rocket pump inducer are discussed. The experimental investigations are carried out in an inducer of free vortex design, tested in air, at a design flow coefficient of 0.065 and Reynolds number of 660,000. The results indicate that the performance, both pressure rise and efficiency, improve continuously with decrease in solidity, the two bladed inducer showing the best performance. The conclusions derived in this paper should help develop design criteria for inducers, especially in the selection of number of blades or solidity.

Residual thermal stress control in composite reinforced metal structures

Advanced composite materials, composed of boron or graphite fibers and a supporting matrix, make significant structural efficiency improvements available to aircraft and aerospace designers. Residual stress induced during bonding of composite reinforcement to metal structural elements can be reduced or eliminated through suitable modification to the manufacturing processes. The most successful method employed during this program used a steel tool capable of mechanically loading the metal component in compression prior to the adhesive bonding cycle. Compression loading combined with heating to 350 F during the bond cycle can result in creep deformation in aluminum components. The magnitude of the deformation increases with increasing stress level during exposure to 350 F.

Preparing oxidizer coated metal fuel particles

A solid propellant composition of improved efficiency is described which includes an oxidizer containing ammonium perchlorate, and a powered metal fuel, preferably aluminum or beryllium, in the form of a composite. The metal fuel is contained in the crystalline lattice framework of the oxidizer, as well as within the oxidizer particles, and is disposed in the interstices between the oxidizer particles of the composition. The propellant composition is produced by a process comprising the crystallization of ammonium perchlorate in water, in the presence of finely divided aluminum or beryllium. A suitable binder is incorporated in the propellant composition to bind the individual particles of metal with the particles of oxidizer containing occluded metal.

A 2.5 kW advanced technology ion thruster

A program has been conducted in order to improve the performance characteristics of 30 cm thrusters. This program was divided into three distinct, but related tasks: (1) the discharge chamber and component design modifications proposed for inclusion in the engineering model thruster were evaluated and engineering specifications were verified; (2) thrust losses which result from the contributions of double charged ions and nonaxial ion trajectories to the ion beam current were measured and (3) the specification and verification of power processor and control requirements of the engineering model thruster design were demonstrated. Proven design modifications which provide improved efficiencies are incorporated into the engineering model thruster during a structural re-design without introducing additional delay in schedule or new risks. In addition, a considerable amount of data is generated on the relation of double ion production and beam divergence to thruster parameters. Overall thruster efficiency is increased from 68% to 71% at full power, including corrections for double ion and beam divergence thrust losses.

Development of a metal-clad advanced composite shear web design concept

An advanced composite web concept was developed for potential application to the Space Shuttle Orbiter main engine thrust structure. The program consisted of design synthesis, analysis, detail design, element testing, and large scale component testing. A concept was sought that offered significant weight saving by the use of Boron/Epoxy (B/E) reinforced titanium plate structure. The desired concept was one that was practical and that utilized metal to efficiently improve structural reliability. The resulting development of a unique titanium-clad B/E shear web design concept is described. Three large scale components were fabricated and tested to demonstrate the performance of the concept: a titanium-clad plus or minus 45 deg B/E web laminate stiffened with vertical B/E reinforced aluminum stiffeners.

Feasibility demonstration of a road vehicle fueled with hydrogen-enriched gasoline

Evaluation of the concept of using hydrogen-enriched gasoline in a modified internal combustion engine in order to make possible the burning of ultralean mixtures. The use of such an engine in a road vehicle demonstrated that the addition of small quantities of gaseous hydrogen to gasoline resulted in significant reductions in exhaust emissions of carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides as well as in thermal efficiency improvements of the engine performance.
