The 𝑚=2 amplituhedron and the hypersimplex: Signs, clusters, tilings, Eulerian numbers

The hypersimplex Δ <#comment/> k + 1 , n \Delta _{k+1,n} is the image of the positive Grassmannian G r k + 1 , n ≥ <#comment/> 0 Gr^{\geq 0}_{k+1,n} under the moment map. It is a polytope of dimension n − <#comment/> 1 n-1 in R n \mathbb {R}^n . Meanwhile, the amplituhedron A n , k , 2 ( Z ) \mathcal {A}_{n,k,2}(Z) is the projection of the positive Grassmannian G r k , n ≥ <#comment/> 0 Gr^{\geq 0}_{k,n} into the Grassmannian G r k , k + 2 Gr_{k,k+2} under a map Z ~ <#comment/> \tilde {Z} induced by a positive matrix Z ∈ <#comment/> M a t n , k + 2 > 0 Z\in Mat_{n,k+2}^{>0} . Introduced in the context of scattering amplitudes , it is not a polytope, and has full dimension 2 k 2k inside G r k , k + 2 Gr_{k,k+2} . Nevertheless, there seem to be remarkable connections between these two objects via T-duality , as conjectured by Łukowski, Parisi, and Williams [Int. Math. Res. Not. (2023)]. In this paper we use ideas from oriented matroid theory, total positivity, and the geometry of the hypersimplex and positroid polytopes to obtain a deeper understanding of the amplituhedron. We show that the inequalities cutting out positroid polytopes —images of positroid cells of G r k + 1 , n ≥ <#comment/> 0 Gr^{\geq 0}_{k+1,n} under the moment map—translate into sign conditions characterizing the T-dual Grasstopes —images of positroid cells of G r k , n ≥ <#comment/> 0 Gr^{\geq 0}_{k,n} under Z ~ <#comment/> \tilde {Z} . Moreover, we subdivide the amplituhedron into chambers , just as the hypersimplex can be subdivided into simplices, with both chambers and simplices enumerated by the Eulerian numbers. We use these properties to prove the main conjecture of Łukowski, Parisi, and Williams [Int. Math. Res. Not. (2023)]: a collection of positroid polytopes is a tiling of the hypersimplex if and only if the collection of T-dual Grasstopes is a tiling of the amplituhedron A n , k , 2 ( Z ) \mathcal {A}_{n,k,2}(Z) for all Z Z . Moreover, we prove Arkani-Hamed–Thomas–Trnka’s conjectural sign-flip characterization of A n , k , 2 \mathcal {A}_{n,k,2} , and Łukowski–Parisi–Spradlin–Volovich’s conjectures on m = 2 m=2 cluster adjacency and on positroid tiles for A n , k , 2 \mathcal {A}_{n,k,2} (images of 2 k 2k -dimensional positroid cells which map injectively into A n , k , 2 \mathcal {A}_{n,k,2} ). Finally, we introduce new cluster structures in the amplituhedron.

Unveiling the star formation history of the Upper Scorpius association through its kinematics

ABSTRACT Stellar associations can be discerned as overdensities of sources not only in the physical space but also in the velocity space. The common motion of their members, gradually eroded by the galactic tidal field, is partially reminiscent of the initial kinematic structure. Using recent data from Gaia EDR3, combined with radial velocities from GALAH and APOGEE, we traced back the present positions of stars belonging to Upper Scorpius (USCO), a subgroup of Scorpius–Centaurus, the nearest OB association. About one half of the subgroup (the ‘clustered’ population) appears composed of many smaller entities, which were in a more compact configuration in the past. The presence of a kinematic duality is reflected into an age spread between this younger clustered population and an older diffuse population, in turn confirmed by a different fraction fD of disc-bearing stars (fD = 0.24 ± 0.02 versus fD = 0.10 ± 0.01). Star formation in USCO appears to have lasted more than 10 Myr and proceeded in small groups that, after a few Myr, dissolve in the field of the older population but retain for some time memory of their initial structure. The difference of ages inferred through isochrones and kinematics, in this regard, could provide a powerful tool to quantify the time-scale of gas removal.

The AdS 5 × S 5 superstring

The duality between the type IIB superstring theory in an AdS 5 × S 5 background with N units of five-form flux and N = 4 super Yang–Mills theory with a U ( N ) gauge group has been studied extensively. My version of the construction of the superstring world-sheet action is reviewed here.

Concatenated dual displacement code for continuous-variable quantum error correction

The continuous-variable (CV) Gaussian no-go theorem fundamentally limits the suppression of Gaussian displacement errors using only Gaussian gates and states. Prior studies have employed Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) states as ancillary qumodes to suppress small Gaussian displacement errors. However, when the displacement magnitude becomes large, inevitable lattice-crossing errors arise beyond the correctable range of the GKP state. To address this issue, we concatenate the Gaussian-noise-suppression circuit with an outer analog Steane code that corrects such occasional lattice-crossing events as well as other abrupt displacement errors. Contrary to conventional concatenation, which primarily aims to reduce logical error rates, the Steane-GKP duality in encoding provides complementary protection against displacement errors at different scales: The inner GKP layer employs non-Gaussian resources to suppress continuous Gaussian noise and reduce residual variance, while the outer analog Steane code corrects discrete lattice-crossing events that exceed the GKP correctable range. It is precisely this separation of error-mitigation roles that enables CV error correction. In contrast to prior work on concatenating GKP and repetition codes to establish error correction for discrete qubit/qudit encoding, we provide correction in the continuous encoding space. Analytical studies show that, under infinite squeezing, the concatenated code suppresses the variance of Gaussian displacement errors acting on all qumodes by up to 50%, while enabling unbiased correction of lattice-crossing errors with a success probability determined by the ratio between the residual Gaussian error standard deviation and the lattice-crossing magnitude. Even with finite squeezing, the proposed architecture still provides Gaussian-error suppression and lattice-crossing correction. Moreover, the presence of the outer analog Steane code relaxes the squeezing requirement of the inner GKP states, indicating near-term experimental feasibility. This work establishes a viable route toward fault-tolerant continuous-variable quantum computation and provides insight into the design of concatenated CV error-correcting architectures.

Dynamical quantum phase transitions in interacting atomic interferometers

Particle-wave duality has allowed physicists to establish atomic interferometers as celebrated complements to their optical counterparts in a broad range of quantum devices. In particular, interactions give rise to multiparticle correlations unavailable in linear interferometers. Here, we show that interactions lead to dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) between NOON states in an atomic interferometer. These transition points result from zeros of the Loschmidt echo, which approach the real axis of the complex time plane in the large-particle-number limit, and signify pair condensates, another type of exotic quantum states featured with prevailing two-body correlations. Such DQPTs thus provide us with a new angle to understand many-body states emergent from quantum nonequilibrium dynamics. Further, our work also suggests interacting atomic interferometers as a new tool for creating highly entangled states to beat the standard quantum limit.

Berry phase in quantum field theory: Diabolical points and boundary phenomena

We study aspects of Berry phase in gapped many-body quantum systems by means of effective field theory. Once the parameters are promoted to spacetime-dependent background fields, such adiabatic phases are described by Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) and similar terms. In the presence of symmetries, there are also quantized invariants capturing generalized Thouless pumps. Consideration of these terms provides constraints on the phase diagram of many-body systems, implying the existence of gapless points in the phase diagram which are stable for topological reasons. We describe such diabolical points, realized by free fermions and gauge theories in various dimensions, which act as sources of "higher Berry curvature" and are protected by the quantization of the corresponding WZW terms or Thouless pump terms. Here, these are analogous to Weyl nodes in a semimetal band structure. We argue that in the presence of a boundary, there are boundary diabolical points---parameter values where the boundary gap closes---which occupy arcs ending at the bulk diabolical points. Consideration of the topological effective action for the parameters also provides some new checks on conjectured infrared dualities and deconfined quantum criticality in 2+1d.

Quantum system dynamics with a weakly nonlinear Josephson junction bath

Here, we investigate the influence of a weakly nonlinear Josephson bath consisting of a chain of Josephson junctions on the dynamics of a small quantum system (LC oscillator). Focusing on the regime where the charging energy is the largest energy scale, we perturbatively calculate the correlation function of the Josephson bath to the leading order in the Josephson energy divided by the charging energy while keeping the cosine potential exactly. When the variation of the charging energy along the chain ensures fast decay of the bath correlation function, the dynamics of the LC oscillator that is weakly and capacitively coupled to the Josephson bath can be solved through the Markovian master equation. We establish a duality relation for the Josephson bath between the regimes of large charging and Josephson energies, respectively. The results can be applied to cases where the charging energy either is nonuniformly engineered or disordered in the chain. Furthermore, we find that the Josephson bath may become non-Markovian when the temperature is increased beyond the zero-temperature limit in that the bath correlation function gets shifted by a constant and does not decay with time.

Twisted bilayer graphene. III. Interacting Hamiltonian and exact symmetries

We derive the explicit Hamiltonian of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) with Coulomb interaction projected into the flat bands and study the symmetries of the Hamiltonian. First, we show that all projected TBG Hamiltonians can be written as positive semidefinite Hamiltonians, an example of which was found in work by Kang and Vafek [Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 246401 (2019)]. We then prove that the interacting TBG Hamiltonian exhibits an exact U(4) symmetry in the exactly flat band (nonchiral-flat) limit. We further define, besides a first chiral limit where the AA stacking hopping is zero, a second chiral limit where the AB/BA stacking hopping is zero. In the first chiral-flat limit (or second chiral-flat limit) with exactly flat bands, the TBG is enhanced to have an exact U(4) × U(4) symmetry, whose generators are different between the two chiral limits. While in the first chiral limit and in the nonchiral case these symmetries have been found in work by Bultinck et al. [Phys. Rev. X 10, 031034 (2020)], for the eight lowest bands, we here prove that they are valid for projection into any 8 n max particle-hole symmetric TBG bands, with n max > 1 being the practical case for small twist angles < 1°. Furthermore, in the first or second chiral-nonflat limit without flat bands, an exact U(4) symmetry still remains. We also elucidate the link between the U(4) symmetry presented here and the similar but different U(4) of Kang and Vafek [Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 246401 (2019)]. Additionally, we show that our projected Hamiltonian can be viewed as the normal-ordered Coulomb interaction plus a Hartree-Fock term from passive bands, and exhibits a many-body particle-hole symmetry which renders the physics symmetric around charge neutrality. We also provide an efficient parametrization of the interacting Hamiltonian. The existence of two chiral limits with an enlarged symmetry suggests a possible duality of the model yet undiscovered.

Low-energy limit of some exotic lattice theories and UV/IR mixing

We continue our exploration of exotic, gapless lattice and continuum field theories with subsystem global symmetries. In an earlier paper, we presented free lattice models enjoying all the global symmetries (except continuous translations), dualities, and anomalies of the continuum theories. Here, we study in detail the relation between the lattice models and the corresponding continuum theories. We do that by analyzing the spectrum of the theories and several correlation functions. These lead us to uncover interesting subtleties in the way the continuum limit can be taken. In particular, in some cases, the infinite volume limit and the continuum limit do not commute. Furthermore, this signals a surprising UV/IR mixing, i.e., long distance sensitivity to short distance details.

Topological order in interacting semimetals

It has recently been demonstrated that it is possible to open a gap in a magnetic Weyl semimetal, while preserving the chiral anomaly along with the charge conservation and translational symmetries, which all protect the gapless nodes in a weakly interacting semimetal. The resulting state was shown to be a nontrivial generalization of a non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall liquid to three dimensions. Here we point out that a second fractional quantum Hall state exists in this case. This state has exactly the same electrical and thermal Hall responses as the first, but a distinct (fracton) topological order. Moreover, the existence of this second fractional quantum Hall state necessarily implies a gapless phase, which has identical topological response to a noninteracting Weyl semimetal, but is distinct from it. Here, this may be viewed as a generalization (in a weaker form) of the known duality between a noninteracting two-dimensional Dirac fermion and QED 3 to 3+1 dimensions. In addition we discuss a (3+1)-dimensional topologically ordered state, obtained by gapping a nodal line semimetal without breaking symmetries.

R7-branes as charge conjugation operators

R7-branes are a class of recently discovered nonsupersymmetric real codimension-two duality defects in type IIB string theory predicted by the swampland cobordism conjecture. For type IIB realizations of 6D SCFTs with N = ( 2 , 0 ) supersymmetry, wrapping an R7-brane “at infinity” leads to a topological operator associated with a zero-form charge conjugation symmetry that squares to the identity. Similar considerations hold for those theories obtained from further toroidal compactification, but this can be obstructed by bundle curvature effects. Using some minimal data on the topological sector of the R7-branes, we extract the associated fusion rules for these charge conjugation operators. More broadly, we sketch a top down realization of various topological operators/interfaces associated with C , R , and T transformations. We also use holography to provide strong evidence for the existence of the R7-brane which is complementary to the cobordism conjecture. Similar considerations apply to other string-realized QFTs with symmetry operators constructed via nonsupersymmetric branes which carry a conserved charge. On the holographic dual of a topological symmetry operator

We study the holographic dual of a topological symmetry operator in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Symmetry operators arise from topological field theories localized on a subspace of the boundary conformal field theory spacetime. We use bottom up considerations to construct the topological sector associated with their bulk counterparts. In particular, by exploiting the structure of entanglement wedge reconstruction we argue that the bulk counterpart has a nontopological world volume action, i.e., it describes a dynamical object. As a consequence, we find that there are no global 𝑝-form symmetries for 𝑝 ≥ 0 in asymptotically anti–de Sitter spacetimes, which includes the case of noninvertible symmetries. Provided one has a suitable notion of subregion-subregion duality, our argument for the absence of bulk global symmetries applies to more general spacetimes. These considerations also motivate us to consider for general QFTs (holographic or not) the notion of lower-form symmetries, namely, (−𝑚)-form symmetries for 𝑚 ≥ 2.

One dimensional staggered bosons, clock models, and their noninvertible symmetries

We study systems of staggered boson Hamiltonians in a one dimensional lattice and in particular how the translation symmetry by one unit in these systems is in reality a noninvertible symmetry closely related to T-duality. We also study the simplest systems of clock models derived from these staggered boson Hamiltonians. We show that the noninvertible symmetries of these lattice models together with the discrete Z N symmetry predict that these are critical points with a U ( 1 ) current algebra at c = 1 and radius 2 N whenever N > 4 . We also present an independent computation of this value that arises directly from the staggered boson variables and does not use these additional symmetries. We also present a theoretical estimate of the values of critical coupling constants away from the self-dual symmetry point in these clock models. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Impossible symmetries and conformal gravity

We explore the physics of relativistic gapless phases defined by a mixed anomaly between two generalized conserved currents. The gapless modes can be understood as Goldstone modes arising from the nonlinear realization of (generically higher-form) symmetries arising from these currents. In some cases, the anomaly cannot be reproduced by any local and unitary theory, indicating that the corresponding symmetries are impossible, in the sense that they cannot appear in a Lorentzian physical system. We give a general construction and illustrate it with several examples. Most notably, we study conformal gravity from this perspective, describing the higher-form symmetries of the linear theory and showing how it can be understood in terms of anomalies. Along the way we clarify some aspects of electric-magnetic duality in linear conformal gravity.

Frozen generalized symmetries

M-theory frozen singularities are (locally) D - or E -type orbifold singularities with a background fractional C 3 -monodromy surrounding them. In this paper, we revisit such backgrounds and address several puzzling features of their physics. We first give a top-down derivation of how the D - or E -type 7D N = 1 gauge theory directly “freezes” to a lower-rank gauge theory due to the C 3 background. This relies on a Hanany-Witten effect of fractional M5 branes and the presence of a gauge anomaly of fractional D p probes in the circle reduction. Additionally, we compute defect groups and 8D symmetry topological field theories of the 7D frozen theories in several duality frames. We apply our results to understanding the evenness condition of strings ending on O 7 + planes, and calculating the global forms of supergravity gauge groups of M-theory compactified on T 4 / Γ with frozen singularities. We also revisit IIA A D E singularities with a C 1 -monodromy along a 1-cycle in the boundary lens space and show that this freezes the gauge degrees of freedom via confinement. Integrable higher-spin deformations of sigma models from auxiliary fields

We construct a new infinite family of integrable deformations of the principal chiral model (PCM) parametrized by an interaction function of several variables, which extends the formalism of [C. Ferko and L. Smith, An infinite family of integrable sigma models using auxiliary fields, .] and includes deformations of the PCM by functions of both the stress tensor and higher-spin conserved currents. We show in detail that every model in this class admits a Lax representation for its equations of motion, and that the Poisson bracket of the Lax connection takes the Maillet form, establishing the existence of an infinite set of Poisson-commuting conserved charges. We argue that the non-Abelian T-dual of any model in this family is classically integrable, and that T-duality “commutes” with a general deformation in this class, in a sense which we make precise. Finally, we demonstrate that these higher-spin auxiliary field deformations can be extended to accommodate the addition of a Wess-Zumino term, and we exhibit the Lax connection in this case. Generalized symmetries of nonsupersymmetric orbifolds

We determine generalized symmetries for 4D theories engineered via type II strings on nonsupersymmetric orbifold backgrounds ℝ 3,1 × ℝ 6 /Γ. Probe branes detect generalized symmetries via the adjacency matrix for fermionic degrees of freedom in an associated quiver gauge theory. In situations where the tachyons are sequestered away from the boundary 𝑆 5 /Γ, this exactly matches the result extracted from singular homology. In situations with an unsequestered tachyon which stretches out to the boundary, the presence of tachyonic pulses partitions up the space into several distinct sectors, and the net contribution again matches with the answer expected via quiver methods. For IIA backgrounds, the presence of a localized closed string tachyon leads to transitions in the spectrum of states, generalized symmetries, higher-group symmetries, as well as the level matrix of the associated symmetry topological field theory (SymTFT). For IIB backgrounds with a stack of spacetime filling probe D3-branes, the onset of a radiatively generated potential leads to similar considerations involving scale dependent transitions in the symmetries of the theory, including structures such as duality defects/interfaces.

Landscape of 4d N = 1 SCFTs with a = c

We study a landscape of four-dimensional N = 1 superconformal field theories (SCFTs) with identical central charges. These theories are obtained by renormalization group flows triggered by supersymmetry-preserving superpotential deformations of the N = 1 gauging of the flavor symmetry of a collection of N = 2 D p ( G ) Argyres-Douglas SCFTs. In this work, we focus on the fixed points in the landscape of the S U ( 3 ) gauging of three copies of the D 2 ( S U ( 3 ) ) = H 2 theory together with an adjoint-valued chiral multiplet. We catalog the network of a = c fixed points, and, along the way, we find a variety of dualities and instances of supersymmetry enhancement. Published by the American Physical Society 2025
