Enhanced Photo-Cross-Linking of Thymines in DNA Holliday Junction-Templated Squaraine Dimers

Programmable self-assembly of dyes using DNA templates to promote exciton delocalization in dye aggregates is gaining considerable interest. New methods to improve the rigidity of the DNA scaffold and thus the stability of the molecular dye aggregates to encourage exciton delocalization are desired. In these dye–DNA constructs, one potential way to increase the stability of the aggregates is to create an additional covalent bond via photo-cross-linking reactions between thymines in the DNA scaffold. Specifically, we report an approach to increase the yield of photo-cross-linking reaction between thymines in the core of a DNA Holliday junction while limiting the damage from UV irradiation to DNA. We investigated the effect of the distance between thymines on the photo-cross-linking reaction yields by using linkers with different lengths to tether the dyes to the DNA templates. By comprehensively evaluating the photo-cross-linking reaction yields of dye–DNA aggregates using linkers with different lengths, we conclude that interstrand thymines tend to photo-cross-link more efficiently with short linkers. A higher cross-linking yield was achieved due to the shorter intermolecular distance between thymines influenced by strong dye–dye interactions. Furthermore, our method establishes the possibility of improving the stability of DNA-scaffolded dye aggregates, thereby expanding their use in exciton-based applications such as light harvesting, nanoscale computing, quantum computing, and optoelectronics.

Determining the Effects of Zero-Field Splitting and Magnetic Exchange in Dimeric Europium(II) Complexes

Related BAP [BAP = bis(acyl)phosphide] and Acac (Acac = β-diketonate) molecules perform as robust supports for both lanthanide and actinide metals. Here, a molecular bimetallic Eu 2+ complex was successfully targeted and isolated by employing sodium bis(mesitoyl)phosphide [Na( mes BAP)] in a salt metathesis with EuI 2 , producing [Eu( mes BAP) 2 (et 2 o)] 2 (et 2 o = metal-coordinated diethyl ether). The corresponding Acac-Eu 2+ complex was targeted using mes Acac– (1,3-dimesityl-1,3-propanedione), generating [Eu( mes Acac) 2 (et 2 o)] 2 . Both complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, UV–vis, IR, and NMR spectroscopies, and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility. [Eu( mes BAP) 2 (et 2 o)] 2 was persistent under anaerobic, anhydrous conditions, whereas the analogous [Eu( mes Acac) 2 (et 2 o)] 2 showed evidence of decomposition under identical conditions. Finally, variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility and magnetization studies of [Eu( mes BAP) 2 (et 2 o)] 2 and [Eu( mes Acac) 2 (et 2 o)] 2 were performed, resulting in similar magnetic exchange coupling values of J ex = –0.018 and –0.023 cm –1 and axial zero-field-splitting D values of –0.38 and –0.51 cm –1 , respectively.

Unraveling the Effects of Cobalt on Crystal Growth and Solution Behavior of Nb 6 P 2 W 12 -based Dimeric Clusters

We report the synthesis, characterization, and solution self-assembly of plenary Nb 6 P 2 W 12 -based transition-metal substituted polyoxometalate, which is obtained by simply adding transition metals (Co 2+ ) into aqueous solution containing cluster [(NbO 2 ) 6 P 2 W 12 O 56 ] 12- , which is obtained by an in situ synthetic method. The incorporation of Co 2+ ions significantly affects the crystal structure, resulting in the formation of a 1D chain-like crystal and the first example of a niobotungstate-based cobalt derivative cluster. The behavior and stability of this cluster in solution are confirmed by time-resolved static light scattering, dynamic light scattering, small-angle X-ray scattering, and electrospray mass spectrometry studies.
