Dimensionality reduction using elastic measures

With the recent surge in big data analytics for hyperdimensional data, there is a renewed interest in dimensionality reduction techniques. In order for these methods to improve performance gains and understanding of the underlying data, a proper metric needs to be identified. This step is often overlooked, and metrics are typically chosen without consideration of the underlying geometry of the data. Here, in this paper, we present a method for incorporating elastic metrics into the t-distributed stochastic neighbour embedding (t-SNE) and Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP). We apply our method to functional data, which is uniquely characterized by rotations, parameterization and scale. If these properties are ignored, they can lead to incorrect analysis and poor classification performance. Through our method, we demonstrate improved performance on shape identification tasks for three benchmark data sets (MPEG-7, Car data set and Plane data set of Thankoor), where we achieve 0.77, 0.95 and 1.00 F1 score, respectively.

Particle displacement tracking applied to air flows

Electronic Particle Image Velocimeter (PIV) techniques offer many advantages over conventional photographic PIV methods such as fast turn around times and simplified data reduction. A new all electronic PIV technique was developed which can measure high speed gas velocities. The Particle Displacement Tracking (PDT) technique employs a single cw laser, small seed particles (1 micron), and a single intensified, gated CCD array frame camera to provide a simple and fast method of obtaining two-dimensional velocity vector maps with unambiguous direction determination. Use of a single CCD camera eliminates registration difficulties encountered when multiple cameras are used to obtain velocity magnitude and direction information. An 80386 PC equipped with a large memory buffer frame-grabber board provides all of the data acquisition and data reduction operations. No array processors of other numerical processing hardware are required. Full video resolution (640x480 pixel) is maintained in the acquired images, providing high resolution video frames of the recorded particle images. The time between data acquisition to display of the velocity vector map is less than 40 sec. The new electronic PDT technique is demonstrated on an air nozzle flow with velocities less than 150 m/s.

Computerized Analysis Of Thermal-Diffusivity Data

Improved data-acquisition and data-analysis system for thermal-diffusivity measurements using flash method incorporates digital oscilloscope and microcomputer for rapid reduction of experimental data. In thermal-diffusivity apparatus thin specimen heated on one face by pulsed xenon flashlamp, subsequent temperature rise on opposite face monitored by infrared detector. Thermal diffusivity estimated from thickness of specimen and from time after initial pulse during which temperature rise reaches half maximum value. Accuracy of estimate improved by correcting temperature measurements for radiative loss of heat from specimen and for finite duration and specific waveform of flashlamp pulse. System devised for use in high-temperature measurements of thermoelectric materials.

The Smoke-Trail Method for Obtaining Detailed Measurements of the Vertical Wind Profile for Application to Missile-Dynamic-Response Problems

Detailed measurements of the vertical profile of the wind are urgently needed f o r studies of the response of rising missiles, but conventional wind-measuring systems cannot provide the accuracy and detail required over the necessary range of altitudes. A method is presented for obtaining a detailed, accurate profile over a large altitude range. The method utilizes photogrammetric measurement of successive positions of the t rail of an ascending rocket. Construction of a rocketborne smoke generator is discussed and the photography, film reading, and data-reduction procedures are described. The accuracy of the method i s examined and error equations are derived. Finally, some examples of wind profiles measured by this method are shown, and their implications for missile response are indicated.

Method for evaluating wind turbine wake effects on wind farm performance

A method of testing the performance of a cluster of wind turbine units an data analysis equations are presented which together form a simple and direct procedure for determining the reduction in energy output caused by the wake of an upwind turbine. This method appears to solve the problems presented by data scatter and wind variability. Test data from the three-unit Mod-2 wind turbine cluster at Goldendale, Washington, are analyzed to illustrate the application of the proposed method. In this sample case the reduction in energy was found to be about 10 percent when the Mod-2 units were separated a distance equal to seven diameters and winds were below rated.

Lunar gravity derived from long-period satellite motion, a proposed method

A method was devised to determine the spherical harmonic coefficients of the lunar gravity field. The method consists of a two-step data reduction and estimation process. Pseudo-Doppler data were generated simulating two different lunar orbits. The analysis included the perturbing effects of the L1 lunar gravity field, the earth, the sun, and solar radiation pressure. Orbit determinations were performed on these data and long-period orbital elements were obtained. The Kepler element rates from these solutions were used to recover L1 lunar gravity coefficients. Overall results of the experiment show that lunar gravity coefficients can be accurately determined and that the method is dynamically consistent with long-period perturbation theory.

Doppler tracking experiment MA-089

The Doppler tracking experiment was designed to test the feasibility of improved mapping of earth gravity field anomalies by means of the low-low satellite-to-satellite tracking method. All prescribed data have been retrieved and are currently being reduced and analyzed. Baseline data taken while the docking module was still attached to the command and service module indicated that the equipment operated satisfactorily. The efficacy of the two frequency ionospheric correction method has been demonstrated, and preliminary reduction of a data sample has successfully removed extraneous signatures down to the 50-millihertz level, where the rotational motion of the docking module is revealed. Photographs of the docking module, taken shortly after jettison, show that its rotation was stable.

A vector scanning processing technique for pulsed laser velocimetry

Pulsed-laser-sheet velocimetry yields two-dimensional velocity vectors across an extended planar region of a flow. Current processing techniques offer high-precision (1-percent) velocity estimates, but can require hours of processing time on specialized array processors. Sometimes, however, a less accurate (about 5 percent) data-reduction technique which also gives unambiguous velocity vector information is acceptable. Here, a direct space-domain processing technique is described and shown to be far superior to previous methods in achieving these objectives. It uses a novel data coding and reduction technique and has no 180-deg directional ambiguity. A complex convection vortex flow was recorded and completely processed in under 2 min on an 80386-based PC, producing a two-dimensional velocity-vector map of the flowfield. Pulsed-laser velocimetry data can thus be reduced quickly and reasonably accurately, without specialized array processing hardware.

Techniques for improving the Si-SiO2 interface characterization

The two techniques which have provided most of the information on interface states in MIS-C (metal-insulator-semiconductor-capacitor) structures are the 'quasi-static method' and the 'conductance method'. Sher et al. (1979) and Su et al. (1980) have suggested a number of improvements concerning these methods. The present investigation has the objective to extend the earlier results and to offer a new tentative interpretation of the data. A critical review is conducted of the data collection and reduction techniques for the quasi-static method, taking into account the sample, the quasi-static capacitance, and the surface potential. In connection with a discussion of the conductance method, attention is given to parallel conductance and capacitance measurements, interface-state densities, time constants, and measurements on a (110) surface orientation.

Hierarchical Model Reduction Driven by Machine Learning for Parametric Advection-Diffusion-Reaction Problems in the Presence of Noisy Data

Abstract We propose a new approach to generate a reliable reduced model for a parametric elliptic problem, in the presence of noisy data. The reference model reduction procedure is the directional HiPOD method, which combines Hierarchical Model reduction with a standard Proper Orthogonal Decomposition, according to an offline/online paradigm. In this paper we show that directional HiPOD looses in terms of accuracy when problem data are affected by noise. This is due to the interpolation driving the online phase, since it replicates, by definition, the noise trend. To overcome this limit, we replace interpolation with Machine Learning fitting models which better discriminate relevant physical features in the data from irrelevant unstructured noise. The numerical assessment, although preliminary, confirms the potentialities of the new approach.

Optical spectroscopy of molten fluorides: Methods, electronic and vibrational data, structural interpretation, and relevance to radiative heat transfer

In this study, to help address the need for predicting radiative heat transfer (RHT) behavior of molten salts, we conducted a comprehensive review of methods and data from optical spectroscopic measurements on molten fluoride salts. Transmittance, reflectance, and trans-reflectance experimental methods are discussed, along with the corresponding data reduction methodology and the limitations of each technique. Optical spectroscopy is a convenient indirect probe for changes in structural parameters with temperature and composition. Electronic and vibrational absorption data for transition-metal, lanthanide, and actinide solutes and vibrational absorption data for alkali and alkaline earth fluoride solvents are compiled, and the corresponding structural interpretation is discussed and compared with other experimental and theoretical work. We find that solvent and solute vibrational absorption can be significant in the mid-infrared, resulting in near-infrared edges of significance to RHT. Extrapolation and averaging of existing edge data leads to estimated gray absorption coefficient values at 700 °C of 546 m —1 for FLiBe and 276 m —1 for FLiNaK, both within the range of 1 – 6000 m —1 identified to be of engineering relevance for radiative heat transfer analysis.

An Empirical Method for Determining the Lunar Gravity Field

A method has been devised to determine the spherical harmonic coefficients of the lunar gravity field. This method consists of a two-step data reduction and estimation process. In the first step, a weighted least-squares empirical orbit determination scheme is applied to Doppler tracking data from lunar orbits to estimate long-period Kepler elements and rates. Each of the Kepler elements is represented by an independent function of time. The long-period perturbing effects of the earth, sun, and solar radiation are explicitly modeled in this scheme. Kepler element variations estimated by this empirical processor are ascribed to the non-central lunar gravitation features. Doppler data are reduced in this manner for as many orbits as are available. In the second step, the Kepler element rates are used as input to a second least-squares processor that estimates lunar gravity coefficients using the long-period Lagrange perturbation equations.
