Improved Cumulative Fission Yield Measurements with Fission Spectrum Neutrons on 238U

Two isotopically-characterized targets of high-purity (99.961±0.002%) 238U metal and a neutron dosimetry package were exposed to a pulsed neutron irradiation using the Godiva IV critical assembly at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center to measure the integral fission product yields produced in a Watt fission neutron-energy spectrum. Following irradiation, the fissioned targets were counted with two broad energy germanium detectors. Estimates of the total fissions for each target were made using measurements of well-known fission products. The total number of fissions in each target were then used to measure the fission yields of 33 fission products, 18 of which are published as new measurements. Twelve of the 18 isotopes were in agreement with ENDF/B- VIII.0 using the zeta test and treating ENDF/B-VIII.0 as the true mean: 84mBr, 93Y, 94Y, 104Tc, 134I, 135I, 138Xe, 141Ba, 142Ba, 142La, 146Ce, and 149Nd. The ENDF/B-VIII.0 fission yield for 139Ba was only slightly outside of 1-s relative to the uncertainty measured in this work. Uncertainties for 5 fission product yields were markedly improved over those reported in ENDF/B-VIII.0: 128Sn, 129Sb, 130gSb, 131mTe, and 133I. The fission yields measured for 128Sn, 131mTe, and 133I were in good agreement with the ENDF/B-VIII.0 predicted fission yields. However, fission yields measurements of the isotopes 129Sb, and 130gSb deviated from the ENDF/B-VIII.0 value. Both of these isotopes reside near the doubly magic nuclear shell closures of 50 protons and 82 neutrons. These fission yields may be suppressed because of the odd-odd nuclear structure of 130gSb and the odd-even structure of 129Sb and isomer splitting. Comparisons to other recent work and a brief review with citations are included to support this conclusion.

237 Np Fission Spectrum Cumulative Fission Product Yield Measurement Using Godiva IV Critical Assembly

Precise integral measurement of fast neutron-induced fission product yields for various actinides is of high interest for applied nuclear science. The goal of this effort is to improve uncertainties in fission product yield values of 237 Np. Fission was induced in a NpO 2 (NO 3 ) target using the Godiva IV critical assembly in burst mode. The irradiated sample was transferred to a high-resolution γ-ray detection setup within 50 minutes. γ-ray list mode data was collected from 50 minutes to 1 week after the irradiation. γ-ray spectroscopy was performed to analyze the time dependent γ-ray yields using an automated peak search algorithm to identify isotopes by their decay γ-ray energy and half-life. Finally, the initial activity for each isotope identified was used to calculate their fission product yield.

239 Pu Fission Spectrum Cumulative Fission Product Yield Measurement Using Godiva IV Critical Assembly

Precise integral measurement of fast neutron-induced fission product yields for various actinides is of high interest for applied nuclear science. The goal of this effort is to improve uncertainties in fission product yield values of 239 Pu. Fission was induced in a pure 239 Pu (>99%) target using the Godiva IV critical assembly in burst mode. Further, the irradiated sample was transferred to a high-resolution γ-ray detector within 45 minutes. γ-ray list mode data was collected from 45 minutes to 1 week after the irradiation. γ-ray spectroscopy was performed to analyze the time dependent γ-ray yields using an automated peak search algorithm to identify isotopes by their decay γ-ray energy and half-life. The initial activity for each isotope identified was used to calculate their fission product yield.

Analytical solution for the cumulative wake of wind turbines in wind farms

This paper solves an approximate form of conservation of mass and momentum for a turbine in a wind farm array. The solution is a fairly simple explicit relationship that predicts the streamwise velocity distribution within a wind farm with an arbitrary layout. As this model is obtained by solving flow-governing equations directly for a turbine that is subject to upwind turbine wakes, no ad hoc superposition technique is needed to predict wind farm flows. A suite of large-eddy simulations (LES) of wind farm arrays is used to examine self-similarity as well as validity of the so-called conservation of momentum deficit for turbine wakes in wind farms. The simulations are performed with and without the presence of some specific turbines in the wind farm. This allows us to systematically study some of the assumptions made to develop the analytical model. A modified version of the conservation of momentum deficit is also proposed to provide slightly better results at short downwind distances, as well as in the far wake of turbines deep inside a wind farm. Model predictions are validated against the LES data for turbines in both full-wake and partial-wake conditions. While our results highlight the limitation in capturing the flow speed-up between adjacent turbine columns, the model is overall able to acceptably predict flow distributions for a moderately sized wind farm. Finally, the paper employs the new model to provide insights on the accuracy of common wake superposition methods.

First measurement of symmetric cumulants of hexagonal flow harmonics in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

Correlations between event-by-event fluctuations of anisotropic flow harmonics are measured in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV, as recorded by the ALICE detector at the LHC. This study presents correlations up to the hexagonal flow harmonic 𝑣 6 , which was measured for the first time. The magnitudes of these higher-order correlations are found to vary as a function of collision centrality and harmonic order. These measurements are compared to viscous hydrodynamic model calculations with EKRT initial conditions and to the iEBE-VISHNU model with T R ⁢ENTo initial conditions. The observed discrepancies between the data and the model calculations vary depending on the harmonic combinations. Due to the sensitivity of model parameters estimated with Bayesian analyses to these higher-order observables, the results presented in this work provide new and independent constraints on the initial conditions and transport properties in theoretical models used to describe the system created in heavy-ion collisions.

Measurement of the longitudinal flow-plane decorrelation using multiplane cumulants in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV Au+Au, Ru+Ru, and Zr+Zr collisions

Measurements of the variation of anisotropic flow-plane angles (𝛹 𝑛 ) with rapidity, commonly known as the flow-plane decorrelation, provide important insights into the initial conditions of the matter produced in heavy-ion collisions. Here, in this paper, using data collected by the STAR experiment, we report the first measurement of the four-plane correlator observable 𝑇 𝑛 ⁡{𝑏⁢𝑎;𝑑⁢𝑐}=⟨⟨sin⁡[𝑛⁢(𝛹$^𝑏_𝑛$ − 𝛹$^𝑎_𝑛$)]⁢sin⁡[𝑛⁢(𝛹$^𝑑_𝑛$ − 𝛹$^𝑐_𝑛$)]⟩⟩, where superscripts 𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐, and 𝑑 denote sequential pseudorapidity (𝜂) regions with 𝑎 corresponding to the most backward region, 𝑏 and 𝑐 close to mid-rapidity with 𝜂 𝑏 < 0 and 𝜂 𝑐 > 0, and 𝑑 being the most forward. The measurement is performed for the elliptic and triangular flow (i.e.~𝑛 = 2 and 3) in Au+Au and isobar (Ru+Ru, Zr+Zr) collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200~GeV. The goal of calculating the correlation of the flow-plane angle variations from backward to mid-central, and from mid-central to forward regions, is to probe the systematic variation of flow angle over a wide 𝜂 range. In mid-central collisions (10−30% centrality), we find 𝑇 2 ⁡{𝑏⁢𝑎;𝑑⁢𝑐} =−0.004 ±0.001⁢(s⁢t⁢a⁢t) ±0.002⁢(s⁢y⁢s⁢t) independent of the collision system. Such a small value of 𝑇 2 favors a random-walk'' variation of the flow-plane angles, where the rapidity correlation length is smaller than the entire region under study. These measurements provide new information on the decorrelation patterns in the system and offer a quantitative estimate of possible systematic variations in anisotropic flow angles such astwist’’ between forward and backward regions. This opens new opportunities for understanding the three-dimensional structure and the time evolution of the quark-gluon plasma created in heavy-ion collisions.
