Sm 2 Ru 3 Sn 5 : A Noncentrosymmetric Cubic Member of the Ln 2 M 3 X 5 Family

An optimized synthetic method is presented for Sm 2 Ru 3 Sn 5 and investigate its physical properties and electronic structure. Sm 2 Ru 3 Sn 5 is prepared by arc-melting stoichiometric ratios of the elements and is confirmed by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. An antiferromagnetic transition is observed at T N = 3.8 K. A modified Curie-Weiss fit to the data in the range 50–150 K yields a Curie-Weiss temperature: θ CW = −36.6 K and an effective magnetic moment: μ eff = 0.83 μ B , in agreement with a Sm 3+ oxidation state. Field-dependent magnetization up to H = 7 T at 2 K shows a maximum response of 0.06 μ B , which is significantly lower than the expected Sm 3+ saturation moment (0.71 μ B ). Resistivity measurements indicate metallic behavior, and analysis of the magnetic entropy from the heat capacity reveals a doublet ground state due to crystal electric field splitting. The electronic structure and density of states are calculated with density function theory and further supported by the local density approximation with dynamical mean-field theory. Finally, the experimental and computational results highlight localized Sm 3+ moments and suggest a possible interplay between Ruddelman–Kitel–Kasuya–Yosida and Kondo interactions, positioning Sm 2 Ru 3 Sn 5 as a promising material for studying topology and complex physical phenomena.

Edge dislocation mediated anomalous charge transfer in face centered cubic high entropy alloys

The charge transfer in alloys dictates their structural and functional properties. The presence of the line defect can influence the charge transfer characteristics in alloys. The edge dislocation-volume misfit interaction in high entropy alloys is a critical area of interest concerning the development of accurate solid solution strengthening models for these materials. The evolution of the volume misfit of atoms is either studied empirically using Vegard's law or mechanistically using \emph{ab initio} calculations, without considering the effect of edge dislocation on charge transfer explicitly. In this work, we show the influence of edge dislocation on the charge transfer in CoCrFeMnNi, CoCrNi and CoNi using large-scale \emph{ab initio} calculations. The anomalous charge transfer characteristics, in terms of deviations from electronegativity trends, are demonstrated, which are dictated by electronegativity equalisation rather than pair-atom interactions. The deviation of atomic volume in the compressive and tensile stress regions of the edge dislocation is rationalised in terms of anomalous magneto-volume fluctuations in such alloys.

Strength-ductility synergy through microstructural and compositional heterogeneity in directed energy deposition additive manufacturing of face-centered cubic materials

Directed energy deposition (DED) is an additive manufacturing (AM) process based on welding technology and offers the advantages of large build volume, high deposition rate, and ability to fabricate multi-material parts. Epitaxial continuous columnar grain growth is a characteristic microstructural feature of DED processed alloys. In this study, a bamboo-like microstructure (periodic alternation of equiaxed and columnar structure) was produced by adopting an intermittent deposition strategy in 316L stainless steel and Inconel 625. The formation of a bamboo-like alternating microstructure was confirmed through electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis. Hardness mapping showed that the columnar to equiaxed transition (CET) occurred at the region right below the fusion line. A finite element (FE) model was used to investigate the relationship between the temperature gradient (G) and the solidification rate (R). The FE model showed a low G/R ratio at the region right below the interface promoting the CET. The grain size and material-dependent deformation behaviors are analyzed using digital image correlation (DIC). The lower deformation on the fine-grain regions observed in DIC analysis is attributed to a higher strain hardening rate, which is confirmed through dislocation density analysis on a tensile-interrupted specimen. The periodically alternating grain size coupled with the microstructural changes caused by intermittent deposition strategy result in a better strength-ductility synergy in both single-material and bimetallic specimens.

Multicycle flash sintering of cubic Y 2 O 3 -stabilized ZrO 2 : An in situ energy dispersive synchrotron x-ray diffraction study with high temporal resolution

The current induced unit cell volume changes, (111) Bragg peak full width at half maximum (FWHM) and its integrated intensity in 8 % Y 2 O 3 stabilized ZrO 2 (8 %YSZ) solid state electrolyte was monitored during a triple-flash sintering experiment by in situ energy dispersive x-ray diffraction using a polychromatic synchrotron probe (max, photon energy 200 keV) with 2 second temporal resolution. The first spontaneous singularity in the unit cell volume (+0.54 %) was observed at 899 °C under 15 V/mm applied field intensity, which was associated with 13 mA/mm 2 current draw and an increase in density to 97 %. Following anelastic relaxation of the unit cell volume under open circuit conditions, the same applied field was applied twice in a row which resulted in additional induced singularities at 925 °C (+0.48 %) and 944 °C (+0.42 %). A floating baseline, which was above the thermal expansion baseline, was observed from 833 to 969 °C and was attributed to Joule heating. In conclusion, the singularity at 899 °C is associated with a sharp change in (111) FWHM and a 34 % decrease in integrated peak area that was attributed to changes in the distribution of oxygen vacancies and the changes in their concentration as induced by the applied field in the spontaneous transient stage of flash sintering.

Crystal growth, scintillation properties & fast neutron-gamma discrimination of cubic halide perovskite CsCaCl 3 :(Eu 2+ , Tl + )

The vast variety of nuclear security applications require radiation detection materials tailored to their operational needs. A scintillator’s properties are strongly influenced by the choice of luminescent dopant, which facilitates customization to different applications. In this work, transparent Ø12 mm single crystals of undoped CsCaCl 3 , CsCaCl 3 :1% Eu, CsCaCl 3 :1% Tl, and CsCaCl 3 :1% Eu, 1% Tl were grown via the Vertical Bridgman method. Their scintillation properties and fast neutron-gamma discrimination capabilities were investigated. Undoped CsCaCl 3 had a light yield of 2,500 ph/MeV, which is the highest reported to date for this CVL material. The incorporation of Eu 2+ or Tl + into CsCaCl 3 as luminescence centers resulted in significantly higher light yields of ∼16,000 ph/MeV and energy resolutions of ∼8% at 662 keV. Compared to the single dopant counterparts, CsCaCl 3 :Eu, Tl had significantly suppressed afterglow; however, this came at the cost of reduced light yield. Among the materials tested, only CsCaCl 3 :Tl showed effective fast neutron and gamma discrimination capabilities, achieving a Figure of Merit of 3.2 between gamma-rays and fast neutron captures that produce protons and 1.6 between gamma-rays and fast neutron captures that produce alpha particles.

Conundrum for the free energy of a holonomous gluonic plasma at cubic order

We compute the term ~ g 3 in the free energy for a S U ( N ) gauge theory with nonzero holonomy at nonzero temperature. If the holonomy is generated kinematically by the introduction of gauge invariant sources coupled to Polyakov loops, the contribution of charged (off-diagonal) gluons to the free energy at order g 3 , F ( 3 : c . g . ) , is singular: F ( 3 : c . g . ) ≠ 0 without holonomy, but F ( 3 : c . g . ) = 0 when the holonomy is nonzero, even infinitesimally. We show that the absence of the charged gluon contribution is required by gauge invariance alone and is therefore a universal feature.
