Modeling nuclear waste disposal in crystalline rocks at the Forsmark and Olkiluoto repository sites – Evaluation of potential thermal–mechanical damage to repository excavations

We conduct coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical modeling of a KBS-3V repository design in crystalline rocks, using data and conditions from the Forsmark in Olkiluoto repository sites in Sweden and Finland. The study focuses on repository performance related to the impact of thermal and hydraulic evolution on the potential for thermal–mechanical damage to underground repository excavations. For the designs and conditions considered at the Forsmark and Olkiluoto repository sites, the simulations show a peak temperature well under the adopted performance target of a 100°C maximum temperature, whereas there is still a high potential for thermal–mechanical damage to the KBS-3V waste deposition holes. The thermal–mechanical damage is much more likely if rock permeability is so low that it delays saturation and swelling of bentonite-clay-based backfill beyond the time for the thermal–mechanical peak, which occurs 50 to 100 years after nuclear waste deposition. We also found that sidewalls of the KBS-3V emplacement tunnels are vulnerable to tensile fracturing due to the combined effect of thermal stressing and backfill swelling. The study highlights a strong interaction between bentonite-based backfill and host rock through capillary suction along with induced rock desaturation. A careful design and selection of the bentonite-clay-based backfill materials for KBS-3V tunnels and deposition holes can facilitate a timely saturation and backfill swelling that in turn can minimize thermal–mechanical damage.

Atomic Resolution Imaging of Light Elements in a Crystalline Environment using Dynamic Hollow-Cone Illumination Transmission Electron Microscopy

Multiple electron scattering and the nonintuitive nature of image formation with coherent radiation complicate the interpretation of conventional transmission electron microscopy images. Precession of the illuminating beam in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) can lead to more robust and interpretable images with some penalty to image contrast, a technique known as dynamic hollow-cone illumination TEM. Here, we demonstrate direct and robust imaging of light and heavy atoms in a crystalline environment with this technique. This method is similar to the annular bright-field technique in scanning transmission electron microscopy, via the principle of reciprocity. Dynamic hollow-cone illumination TEM is challenging in practice due to sensitivity to the misalignment of the precession axis, microscope objective aperture, and crystal zone axis.

Scattering Matrix Determination in Crystalline Materials from 4D Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy at a Single Defocus Value

Recent work has revived interest in the scattering matrix formulation of electron scattering in transmission electron microscopy as a stepping stone toward atomic-resolution structure determination in the presence of multiple scattering. Here, we discuss ways of visualizing the scattering matrix that make its properties clear. Through a simulation-based case study incorporating shot noise, we shown how regularizing on this continuity enables the scattering matrix to be reconstructed from 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) measurements from a single defocus value. Intriguingly, for crystalline samples, this process also yields the sample thickness to nanometer accuracy with no a priori knowledge about the sample structure. The reconstruction quality is gauged by using the reconstructed scattering matrix to simulate STEM images at defocus values different from that of the data from which it was reconstructed.

Self-Patterning Tetrathiafulvalene Crystalline Films

Tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) crystals grown from the melt are organized as spherulites in which helicoidal fibrils growing radially from the nucleation center twist in concert with one another. Alternating bright and dark concentric bands are apparent when films are viewed between crossed polarizers, indicating an alternating pattern of crystallographic faces exposed at the film surface. Band-dependent reorganization of the TTF crystals was observed during exposure to methanol vapor. Crystalline growth appears on bright bands at the expense of the dark bands. After a 24 h period of exposure to methanol vapor, the original spherulites were completely restructured, and the films comprise isolated, concentric circles of crystallites whose orientations are determined by the initial TTF crystal fibril orientation. While the surface of these outgrowths appears faceted and smooth, cross-sectional SEM images revealed a semiporous inner structure, suggesting solvent-vapor-induced recrystallization. Collectively, these results show that crystal twisting can be used to rhythmically redistribute material. Crystal twisting is a common and often controllable phenomenon independent of molecular or crystal structure and therefore offers a generalizable path to spontaneous pattern formation in a wide range of materials.

Preprocessing Affords 3D Crystalline Poly(3-hexylthiophene) Structure

The aggregation and crystallization of poly(3-hexylthiophene- 2,5-diyl) (P3HT), a representative active layer material used for organic field-effect transistor (OFET) applications, are influenced by the solution pretreatment and deposition process. This study explores vibration-assisted convective deposition for the fabrication of OFETs in comparison to spin coating, blade coating, and convective deposition without vibration. The ultraviolet–visible spectroscopic analysis demonstrates that convective deposition, especially assisted with vibration, leads to a greater degree of intrachain interactions, longer conjugation length, and enhanced polymer backbone planarization. When the P3HT solution is preprocessed via sonication and aging, the P3HT films exhibit J-like aggregation, and (h11) peaks can be observed through grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, suggesting an ordered 3D crystalline structure. OFETs based on such films exhibit high mobilities (up to 0.14 cm 2 V –1 s –1 ). The results point to the sensitivity of P3HT charge transport behavior to the intramolecular interactions and backbone planarity and further deepen our understanding of the relationship between processing, aggregates, molecular ordering, and resultant device properties.

Effect of Na Concentration on Cs Distribution with Crystalline Silicotitanate in Tank Waste Simulants

Crystalline silicotitanate (CST) ion exchange media is currently utilized in the tank side cesium removal (TSCR) system on the Hanford site to remove Cs-137 from the tank waste supernate. As the main dose contributor to the liquid supernate in Hanford tank waste, it is necessary to remove the Cs-137 to expedite low activity waste processing and immobilization. Ongoing batch contact experiments with CST have been done to tease out the impact of group II metals, anions, potassium, and temperature on Cs removal to better understand bounding conditions for operations as well as aid in development of a wholesome isotherm model to predict Cs behavior in the tank waste. This paper discusses the impact of Na concentration on Cs exchange and provides insight into the challenges associated with activity coefficient estimations for modeling Cs distribution in tank waste matrices.

Li2[SeC2Se] · 2 NH3: A Crystalline Ammoniate with a-Se-C=C-Se- Dianion

Reaction of Li2C2 with elemental selenium in a molar ratio of 1:2 in liquid ammonia led to the formation of the ammoniate Li2[SeC2Se] ? 2 NH3. Its crystal structure was solved and refined from high-resolution synchrotron powder diffraction data (P21/c, Z = 4). It contains the ?Se-C?C-Se? anion, unprecedented in a crystalline material, whose existence was corroborated by IR/Raman spectra and electronic-structure theory, showing an almost perfect agreement with calculated spectra. Elaborated magnetic-bottle and velocity-map imaging photoelectron spectroscopic investigations show that the ?Se-C?C-Se? radical anion can be transferred to the gas phase, where it was analyzed by NIPE (Negative Ion Photoelectron) and VMI (Velocity-Map Imaging) spectra, which correlate nicely with simulated spectra based on 2?u ? 3Sg – and 2?u ?1Sg + transitions including spin-orbit couplings

Benchmark Data Set of Crystalline Organic Semiconductors

This work reports a Benchmark Data set of Crystalline Organic Semiconductors to test calculations of the structural and electronic properties of these materials in the solid state. The data set contains 67 crystals consisting of mostly rigid molecules with a single dominant conformer, covering the majority of known structural types. The experimental crystal structure is available for the entire data set, whereas zero-temperature unit cell volume can be reliably estimated for a subset of 28 crystals. Using this subset, we benchmark r 2 SCAN-D3 and PBE-D3 density functionals. Then, for the entire data set, we benchmark approximate density functional theory (DFT) methods, including GFN1-xTB and DFTB3(3ob-3-1), with various dispersion corrections against r 2 SCAN-D3. Our results show that r 2 SCAN-D3 geometries are accurate within a few percent, which is comparable to the statistical uncertainty of experimental data at a fixed temperature, but the unit cell volume is systematically underestimated by 2% on average. The several times faster PBE-D3 provides an unbiased estimate of the volume for all systems except for molecules with highly polar bonds, for which the volume is substantially overestimated in correlation with the underestimation of atomic charges. Considered approximate DFT methods are orders of magnitude faster and provide qualitatively correct but overcompressed crystal structures unless the dispersion corrections are fitted by unit cell volume.

Ultralow Thermal Conductivity in Nanoporous Crystalline Fe 3 O 4

While there is no known fundamental lower limit to the thermal conductivity of a material, the lowest thermal conductivities are typically found in amorphous and strongly disordered materials, not highly crystalline materials. Here, we demonstrate a surprising nanostructuring route to ultralow thermal conductivity in a large-unit-cell oxide crystal (Fe 3 O 4 ) containing close-packed nanoscale pores. The electrical conductivity of this material reduces by a factor of 5 relative to dense v, independent of pore size. In contrast, thermal conductivity has a strong dependence on pore size with a factor of 40 of suppression relative to dense Fe 3 O 4 for 40 nm pores vs a factor of 5 for 500 nm pores. The matrix thermal conductivity of Fe 3 O 4 containing 40 nm pores falls below the predicted minimum thermal conductivity by a factor of 3. Finally, we attribute this to strong acoustic phonon scattering and intrinsically limited contributions to thermal conductivity from optical phonons with small dispersion.

Conversion of Formic Acid on Single- and Nano-Crystalline Anatase TiO 2 (101)

Understanding thermochemical transformations of formic acid (FA) on metal oxide surfaces is important for many catalytical reactions. Here we study thermally induced reactions of FA on a single-crystalline and nanocrystalline anatase TiO 2 (101). We employ a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS), diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), and density functional theory (DFT) to follow the FA surface intermediates and reaction products above room temperature. We find that the primary reaction products desorbing at about 300, 480, and 515 K are molecular water, carbon monoxide, and formaldehyde, respectively. Bidentate (BD) formate and bridging hydroxyl (HO b ) are identified as central intermediates in the FA transformations. Bridging oxygen vacancies (V O ) are also likely participants despite their low stability at the surface. In conclusion, the parallel studies on single crystals and faceted TiO 2 (101) nanoparticles reveal the spectroscopic commonalities of surface species and of the thermal conversion of molecular and deprotonated forms of FA.

Modulation Doping via a Two-Dimensional Atomic Crystalline Acceptor

Two-dimensional nanoelectronics, plasmonics, and emergent phases require clean and local charge control, calling for layered, crystalline acceptors or donors. Our Raman, photovoltage, and electrical conductance measurements combined with ab initio calculations establish the large work function and narrow bands of α-RuCl 3 enable modulation doping of exfoliated single and bilayer graphene, chemical vapor deposition grown graphene and WSe 2 , and molecular beam epitaxy grown EuS. We further demonstrate proof of principle photovoltage devices, control via twist angle, and charge transfer through hexagonal boron nitride. Short-ranged lateral doping (≤65 nm) and high homogeneity are achieved in proximate materials with a single layer of α-RuCl 3 . Here, this leads to the best-reported monolayer graphene mobilities (4900 cm 2 /(V s)) at these high hole densities (3 × 10 13 cm -2 ) and yields larger charge transfer to bilayer graphene (6 × 10 13 cm -2 ).

Broadband Light Extraction from Near-Surface NV Centers Using Crystalline-Silicon Antennas

We use crystalline silicon (Si) antennas to efficiently extract broadband single-photon fluorescence from shallow nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond into free space. Our design features relatively easy-to-pattern high-index Si resonators on the diamond surface to boost photon extraction by overcoming total internal reflection and Fresnel reflection at the diamond-air interface and providing modest Purcell enhancement, without etching or otherwise damaging the diamond surface. In simulations, ∼17 times more single photons are collected from a single NV center compared to the case without the antenna; in experiments, we observe an enhancement of ∼9 times, limited by spatial alignment between the NV and the antenna. Furthermore, our approach can be readily applied to other color centers in diamond, and more generally to the extraction of light from quantum emitters in wide-bandgap materials.

Heuristics for Molten-Salt Synthesis of Single-Crystalline Ultrahigh-Nickel Layered Oxide Cathodes

In pursuit of Li-ion batteries with higher energy density, ultrahigh-nickel layered oxides are a leading candidate for next-generation cathode materials. Single-crystalline morphology offers a neat solution to the poor stability of ultrahigh-Ni cathodes; a lower active surface area mitigates electrolyte decomposition at high voltages, and the elimination of grain boundaries improves mechanical resilience and increases volumetric energy density. However, single-crystal cathodes possess their own challenges, several of which originate from synthesis at elevated temperatures meant to induce grain growth. Molten-salt synthesis is an alternative method for obtaining single crystals, accelerating grain growth through the presence of a molten flux without the need for increased temperature. Herein, we offer heuristic guidelines for molten-salt synthesis, discussing key factors for designing reaction mixtures and the necessary exploratory research for novel molten salt/cathode systems. Here, the influence of different salts and synthesis conditions on the morphology and properties of single-crystal LiNiO 2 is presented. It is found that oxidative salts, such as Li 2 O 2 and LiNO 3 , are crucial to supplementing dissolution of gaseous oxygen into the molten phase. Through these discussions, this work aims to provide a set of overarching principles for obtaining higher-quality single-crystal layered oxide cathodes and engender more rigorous and impactful investigation into their fundamental nature and applications.

Cobalt Oxide-Coated Single Crystalline Bismuth Vanadate Photoanodes for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Chlorine Generation

Bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) is an outstanding photoanode material for photoelectrochemical water splitting. Here in this work, a series of single crystalline BiVO 4 photoanodes are synthesized by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Once coated with a thin layer of cobalt oxide (CoO x ) cocatalyst, also by PLD, the photoanodes support efficient photoelectrochemical generation of chlorine (Cl 2 ) from brine under simulated solar light. The activity of the chlorine generation reaction (ClER) is optimized when the thickness of CoO x is about 3 nm, with the faradic efficiency of ClER exceeding 60%. Detailed studies show that the CoO x cocatalyst layer is amorphous, uniform in thickness, and chemically robust. As such, the cocatalyst also effectively protects the underlying BiVO 4 photoanodes against chlorine corrosion. This work provides insights into using artificial photosynthesis for byproducts that carry significant economic value while avoiding the energetically expensive oxygen evolution reactions.

Plasma Synthesis of Spherical Crystalline and Amorphous Electrolyte Nanopowders for Solid-State Batteries

Here, we demonstrate the theory-guided plasma synthesis of high purity nanocrystalline Li 3.5 Si 0.5 P 0.5 O 4 and fully amorphous Li 2.7 Si 0.7 P 0.3 O 3.17 N 0.22 . The synthesis involves the injection of single or mixed phase precursors directly into a plasma torch. As the material exits the plasma torch, it is quenched into spherical nanocrystalline or amorphous nanopowders. This process has virtually zero Li loss and allows for the inclusion of N, which is not accessible with traditional synthesis methods. Finally, we further demonstrate the ability to sinter the crystalline nanopowder into a dense electrolyte membrane at 800 °C, well below the traditional 1000 °C required for a conventional Li 3.5 Si 0.5 P 0.5 O 4 powder.

Increasing Branching and Functionalization Decreases Crystallinity and Crystallization Rate in Linear EVOH

Here, we report the crystallization behavior of a linear poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (LEVOH) under isothermal crystallization as a function of both OH incorporation and undercooling, and compare the results to conventional branched EVOH. This LEVOH is synthesized by post-polymerization functionalization of polycyclooctene, and it exhibits a half-crystallization time and primary crystallization rate nearly an order of magnitude faster than branched EVOH at ~ 6 mol% OH incorporation. While the LEVOH obtains approximately twice the extent of crystallization compared to the branched equivalent, as OH incorporation increases, the crystallization kinetics and crystallinity of LEVOH decrease. The crystal structure of LEVOH is orthorhombic at low functionalization (≤ 11 mol% OH), a mixture of orthorhombic and hexagonal at moderate functionalization (17 - 21 mol%), and hexagonal at high functionalization (23 %). The LEVOH crystallizes into plates, with crystallite widths ~ 20 - 60 times the crystallite thickness. Ultimately, we show LEVOH crystallizes faster and to a greater extent than commercial branched EVOH, a potential advantage of post-polymerization functionalization as part of polymer-to-polymer upcycling.

Polymeric Electron-Selective Contact for Crystalline Silicon Solar Cells with an Efficiency Exceeding 19%

Carrier-selective contacts have become a prominent path forward toward efficient crystalline silicon (c-Si) photovoltaics. Among the proposed contacting materials, organic materials may offer simplified and low-cost processing compared with typical vacuum deposition techniques. In this paper, branched polyethylenimine (b-PEI) is presented as an electron-transport layer (ETL) for c-Si solar cells. The incorporation of a b-PEI interlayer between c-Si(n) and Al leads to a low contact resistivity of 24 mΩ cm 2 . A silicon heterojunction solar cell integrated with b-PEI is demonstrated achieving a power conversion efficiency of 19.4%, which improves the benchmark efficiency of a c-Si solar cell with an organic ETL. This electron selectivity of b-PEI is attributed to its Lewis basicity, i.e., electron-donating ability, promoting favorable band bending at the c-Si surface for electron transport. Moreover, several other Lewis base polymers perform as efficient ETLs in organic/c-Si hybrid devices, indicating Lewis basicity could be a guideline for future organic ETL design.

Multiscale Crystalline Structure of Confined Polypeptoid Films: The Effect of Alkyl Side Chain Branching

Here we report the effect of alkyl side chain branching on melt-recrystallization of nanoconfined polypeptoid films using poly(N-octyl glycine) (PNOG) and poly(N-2-ethyl-1-hexyl glycine) (PNEHG) as model systems. Upon cooling from the isotropic melt, confined PNOG molecules recrystallize into a near-perfect orthorhombic crystal structure with the board-like molecules stacked face-to-face in the substrate-parallel direction, resulting in long-range ordered wormlike lamellae that occupy the entire film. By contrast, rod-like PNEHG molecules bearing branched N-2-ethyl-1-hexyl side chains stack into a columnar hexagonal mesophase with their backbones oriented parallel to the substrates, forming micron-sized sheaf-like superstructures under confinement, exposing large areas of empty spaces in the film. These findings highlight the effect of alkyl side chain branching on the packing motif and multiscale crystalline structure of polypeptoids under a nanoconfined geometry.
