Reproductive Factors and Endometrial Cancer Risk Among Women

Despite evidence of an association between reproductive factors and endometrial cancer risk, prospective studies have been conducted mainly in non-Asian countries. To assess the association between reproductive factors, such as number of deliveries, age at menarche, or menopause, and endometrial cancer risk. This cohort study used pooled individual data from 13 prospective cohort studies conducted between 1963 and 2014 in the Asia Cohort Consortium. Participants were Asian women. Data analysis was conducted from September 2019 to April 2023. Reproductive factors were assessed using a questionnaire in each cohort. The main outcome was time to incidence of endometrial cancer. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs.

Durability of Pt-Alloy Catalyst for Heavy-Duty Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell Applications under Realistic Conditions

As an emerging technology, polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) powered by clean hydrogen can be a great source of renewable power generation with flexible utilization because of high gravimetric energy density of hydrogen. To be used in real-life applications, PEFCs need to maintain their performance for long-term use under a wide range of conditions. Therefore, it's important to understand the degradation of the PEFC under protocols that are closely related to the catalyst lifetime. Alloying Pt with transitional metal improves catalyst activity. It is also crucial to understand Pt alloys degradation mechanisms to improve their durability. To study durability of Pt alloys, accelerated stress tests (ASTs) are performed on Pt-Co catalyst supported on two types of carbon. Two different AST protocols were being studied: Membrane Electrolyte Assembly (MEA) AST based on the protocol introduced by the Million Mile Fuel Cell Truck consortium in 2023 and Catalyst AST, adopted from the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE).

The first ensemble of kilometer-scale simulations of a hydrological year over the third pole

An accurate understanding of the current and future water cycle over the Third Pole is of great societal importance, given the role this region plays as a water tower for densely populated areas downstream. An emerging and promising approach for skillful climate assessments over regions of complex terrain is kilometer-scale climate modeling. As a foundational step towards such simulations over the Third Pole, we present a multi-model and multi-physics ensemble of kilometer-scale regional simulations for the hydrological year of October 2019 to September 2020. The ensemble consists of 13 simulations performed by an international consortium of 10 research groups, configured with a horizontal grid spacing ranging from 2.2 to 4 km covering all of the Third Pole region. These simulations are driven by ERA5 and are part of a Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling EXperiment Flagship Pilot Study on Convection-Permitting Third Pole. The simulations are compared against available gridded and in-situ observations and remote-sensing data, to assess the performance and spread of the model ensemble compared to the driving reanalysis during the cold and warm seasons. Although ensemble evaluation is hindered by large differences between the gridded precipitation datasets used as a reference over this region, we show that the ensemble improves on many warm-season precipitation metrics compared with ERA5, including most wet-day and hour statistics, and also adds value in the representation of wet spells in both seasons. As such, the ensemble will provide an invaluable resource for future improvements in the process understanding of the hydroclimate of this remote but important region.

Bioremediation of heavy oily sludge: a microcosms study

Oily sludge is a residue from the petroleum industry composed of a mixture of sand, water, metals, and high content of hydrocarbons (HCs). The heavy oily sludge used in this study originated from Colombian crude oil with high density and low American Petroleum Institute (API) gravity. The residual waste from heavy oil processing was subject to thermal and centrifugal extraction, resulting in heavy oily sludge with very high density and viscosity. Biodegradation of the total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) was tested in microcosms using several bioremediation approaches, including: biostimulation with bulking agents and nutrients, the surfactant Tween 80, and bioaugmentation. Select HC degrading bacteria were isolated based on their ability to grow and produce clear zones on different HCs. Degradation of TPH in the microcosms was monitored gravimetrically and with gas chromatography (GC). The TPH removal in all treatments ranged between 2 and 67%, regardless of the addition of microbial consortiums, amendments, or surfactants within the tested parameters. The results of this study demonstrated that bioremediation of heavy oily sludge presents greater challenges to achieve regulatory requirements. Additional physicochemical treatments analysis to remediate this recalcitrant material may be required to achieve a desirable degradation rate.

Outdoor annual algae productivity improvements at the pre-pilot scale through crop rotation and pond operational management strategies

The Development of Integrated Screening, Cultivar Optimization, and Verification Research (DISCOVR) collaborative consortium operated pre-pilot scale outdoor ponds to deliver much-needed multi-year, long-term and consistent, algae cultivation data relevant to understanding the current state of technology in terms of expected seasonal algae biomass productivity. Over the course of four years from 2018 to 2021, twelve identical 4.2 m 2 mini-ponds were run in triplicate sets to test strains and operational strategies demonstrated in small-, indoor photobioreactors, in pursuit of increasing overall algae areal productivity and projected farm yield. Fourteen different cultivars derived from a strain screening pipeline were tested. Through deliberate seasonal crop rotation and improvements in operational strategies, annual biomass productivity increased from 11.6 to 17.6 g m -2 day -1 , a > 50% increase over the 2018 baseline. Both brackish and marine strains were included and four out of the fourteen strains consistently yielded high productivity across multiple years; brackish strains Monoraphidium minutum (26BAM) and Scenedesmus obliquus (UTEX393), and marine strains Tetraselmis striata (LANL1001) and Picochlorum celeri (TG2). These freely available datasets, which represent nearly complete annual daily coverage of cultivation metrics including weather, pond temperature and pH, nutrients, and productivity, are unique in the public domain and seek to fill agronomic and operational knowledge gaps to help in the eventual commercialization of algal biofuels and bioproducts.

Coupled fuel performance calculations in VERA and demonstration on Watts Bar unit 1, cycle 1

As the core simulator capabilities in the Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications (VERA) have become more mature and stable, increased attention has been focused on coupling Bison to provide fuel performance simulations. This technique has been a very important driver for the pellet-clad interaction challenge problem being addressed by the Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors (CASL). Here, two coupling approaches are demonstrated on quarter core problems based on Watts Bar Nuclear Plant Unit 1, Cycle 1: (1) an inline approach in which a one-way coupling is used between neutronics/thermal hydraulics (through MPACT/CTF) and fuel performance (through Bison) but no fuel temperature information is passed back to MPACT/CTF, and (2) a two-way approach (coupled) in which the fuel temperature is passed from Bison to MPACT/CTF. In both approaches, power and temperature distributions from MPACT/CTF are used to inform the Bison simulations for each rod in the core. The demonstrations presented here are the first integrated fuel performance simulations in VERA, which opens many possibilities for future work, including applications to accident-tolerant fuel efforts and transient simulations, which are of critical importance to CASL. These demonstrations also highlight the potential to move away from the current Bison-informed fuel temperature lookup table approach, which is the default in MPACT/CTF simulations, if performance improvements are made in the near future.

Interfacial engineering via laser ablation for high-performing PEM water electrolysis

A rationalized interfacial design strategy was applied to tailor the porous transport layer (PTL)-catalyst layer (CL) contact and the PTL bulk-phase architecture. Particularly, at the PTL-CL interface, our results reveal that laser ablated sintered titanium power-based PTLs improve electrolyzer performance at both the H2NEW Consortium baseline catalyst loading of 0.4 mgIr cm -2 as well as at the ultra-low catalyst loading of 0.055 mgIr cm -2 . Under ultra-low catalyst loadings, the laser ablated PTL demonstrates maximum reduction of 230 mV compared to the commercial PTL at 4 A cm -2 , and reduces by 68 mV at 3.2 A cm -2 under H2NEW baseline loading. Laser ablation alters the titanium phase at the interface, so it forms more uniform structure like a microporous layer or a backing layer, leading to an increase in the surface area in contact with the catalyst layer while preventing the membrane from deforming into the PTL. Moreover, we reveal that bulk-phase architecture modification of the PTL by ablating patterned pores at the flow field-PTL interface improves mass transport without sacrificing contact at the CL-PTL interface. Overall, laser ablation of the PTL is an effective method to customize interfacial design to enhance proton exchange membrane electrolyzer performance.

Dissecting the Shared Genetic Architecture of Suicide Attempt, Psychiatric Disorders, and Known Risk Factors

Suicide is a leading cause of death worldwide, and non-fatal suicide attempts, which occur far more frequently, are a major source of disability and social and economic burden. Both have substantial genetic etiology, which is partially shared and partially distinct from that of related psychiatric disorders. Methods: We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 29,782 suicide attempt (SA) cases and 519,961 controls in the International Suicide Genetics Consortium. The GWAS of SA was conditioned on psychiatric disorders using GWAS summary statistics via mtCOJO, to remove genetic effects on SA mediated by psychiatric disorders. We investigated the shared and divergent genetic architectures of SA, psychiatric disorders and other known risk factors. Results: Two loci reached genome-wide significance for SA: the major histocompatibility complex and an intergenic locus on chromosome 7, which remained associated with SA after conditioning on psychiatric disorders and replicated in an independent cohort from the Million Veteran Program. This locus has been implicated in risk-taking, smoking, and insomnia. SA showed strong genetic correlation with psychiatric disorders, particularly major depression, and also with smoking, pain, risk-taking, sleep disturbances, lower educational attainment, reproductive traits, lower socioeconomic status and poorer general health. After conditioning on psychiatric disorders, the genetic correlations between SA and psychiatric disorders decreased, whereas those with non-psychiatric traits remained largely unchanged. Conclusions: Our results identify a risk locus that contributes more strongly to SA than other phenotypes and suggest a shared underlying biology between SA and known risk factors that is not mediated by psychiatric disorders.

Microbial communities for valorizing biomass using the carboxylate platform to produce volatile fatty acids: A review

The carboxylate platform employs a diverse microbial consortium of anaerobes in which the methanogens are inhibited. Nearly all biomass components are digested to a mixture of C1-C8 monocarboxylic acids and their corresponding salts. The methane-arrested anaerobic digestion proceeds readily without needing to sterilize biomass or equipment. It accepts a wide range of feedstocks (e.g., agricultural residues, municipal solid waste, sewage sludge, animal manure, food waste, algae, and energy crops), and produces high product yields. This review highlights several important aspects of the platform, including its thermodynamic underpinnings, influences of inoculum source and operating conditions on product formation, and downstream chemical processes that convert the carboxylates to hydrocarbon fuels and oxygenated chemicals. Furthermore, this review further establishes the carboxylate platform as a viable and economical route to industrial biomass utilization.
