Exploring the benefits of utilizing small modular device for sustainable and flexible shale gas water management

Growing shale gas extraction in recent years has triggered wide discussions on the associated freshwater requirement and wastewater management. Many optimization approaches have been developed for shale gas water management; however, most of the studies assumed permanent utilization of wastewater treatment facilities with fixed capacities. Considering the rapidly declining characteristics of shale gas wastewater production, these treatment facilities could remain largely underutilized after the first few months/years of production, making them less economically attractive. To maximize the capacity utilization of treatment facilities and further improve the economic performance of shale gas development, this study develops a systematic optimization framework, where the capacity strategy of conventional treatment facilities and utilization of the recent concept of modular manufacturing are both considered for flexible shale gas water management. The proposed mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model simultaneously optimizes the design and planning of integrated shale gas and water supply chain, with a focus on capacity planning for both large-scale conventional treatment facilities and small-scale modular devices. A series of Marcellus-based case studies are performed to illustrate the applicability of the proposed model and provide general insights into the trade-offs between the multiple types of treatment facilities. The optimization results reveal that the combinatorial utilization of conventional facilities and modular devices for wastewater treatment (66% by conventional facilities and 34% by modular devices) brings 9.3% more reused water for other well development and 6.2% savings in water-related costs, compared to flexible management of only conventional facilities. Furthermore, this work suggests that taking modular device as auxiliary equipment for shale gas water management is most beneficial to increase the capacity utilization of treatment facilities and achieve a more economic and sustainable shale gas production system.

Design and development of a high-performance Ni-based superalloy WSU 150 for additive manufacturing

This work proposes a design and development strategy of a new nickel-based superalloy for additive manufacturing. A new Ni-based superalloy has been developed by the application of the combinatorial alloy development technique coupled with CALPHAD based solidification modeling by effectively suppressing the precipitation kinetics. The suppression of precipitation during processing paved a way for prevention of cracks during deposition. The new alloy "WSU 150" revealed excellent room temperature mechanical properties with a yield strength of 867 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of 1188 MPa, and an elongation of 27.9% in the as-deposited condition. The mechanical properties of the heat-treated alloy were improved significantly to 1114 MPa yield strength, 1396 MPa ultimate tensile strength, and an elongation of 16.1%. Improvement in the mechanical properties is attributed to the additional precipitation and coarsening of γ' and carbides during heat-treatment. Microstructural investigation of the alloy revealed spherical γ' with a rippled size distribution from the center to the interdendritic region. The average size of the γ' particles in the as-deposited condition was found to be around 48 nm in the interdendritic region. Heat-treatment promoted the coarsening of γ' which is explained in the paper.

Navigating high-dimensional process-structure–property relations in nanocrystalline Pt-Au alloys with machine learning

For decades, materials scientists have relied on the process-structure–property paradigm to guide investigations into material behaviors. Traditional studies often examine a limited number of process-structure–property variables, striving to elucidate mechanisms governing material response. However, this approach is time consuming and can limit exploration, as well as the discovery of process-structure–property relations in novel materials. In this paper, we combined combinatorial sputter deposition and multi-modal high-throughput materials characterization with feedforward neural networks to establish high-dimensional process-structure–property relations in Pt-Au alloys, yielding nanocrystalline alloys with high hardness and low resistivity relevant to electrical contact switch applications. We mapped three indicators of process conditions (composition and two atomic deposition characteristics) onto four indicators of material structure (X-ray diffraction, film thickness, density, and surface roughness) and two indicators of material properties (hardness and resistivity), resulting in 784 unique combinations evaluated over a 13-dimensional space. The neural networks predicted Pt-Au alloys with 18–24 at.% Au, when deposited at specific conditions, to have a nanoindentation hardness up to 7.2 GPa. This high hardness value, comparable to some steels, represents a 3-fold improvement in hardness over “hard gold”, a commonly used electrical contact alloy, while maintaining requisite electrical conductivity. The neural network models provide an avenue to identify expected process windows capable of maximizing material performance.

Investigation of synchrotron X-ray induced oxidation of Ag–Cu thin-film

Combinatorial Ag-Cu thin-films were irradiated by synchrotron X-ray in air to investigate the beam damage on the surface of the thin-film. The main effect was found to be oxidation with the oxidation state primarily depending on film composition: CuO formed on the pure Cu film, whereas Cu 2 O formed in the presence of Ag. Meanwhile, formation of crystalline Ag 2 O 2 was favored and preferentially in the Ag-rich area. Lastly, these results are of great importance in studying the oxidation of noble metal nano-film, and in the characterization of nano-films using synchrotron X-ray.

Pd modified prussian blue frameworks: Multiple electron transfer pathways for improving catalytic activity toward hydrogenation of nitroaromatics

Prussian blue analogs (PBAs) exhibit potential as low-cost and eco-friendly nanocatalysts that can be fabricated with ease. However, the PBA framework structure suffers from poor electronic conductivity, which limits the catalytic efficiency for this class of materials. Noble metals represent an alternative class of materials that display inherent catalytic activity but suffer from aggregation, ultimately reducing the amount of accessible catalytic sites. Herein, we demonstrate a combinatory approach that circumvents the known disadvantages with these classes of catalytic materials in which PBA-supported nanocatalysts were synthesized. These composite materials exhibit excellent catalytic activity for the reduction of nitroaromatics to aminoaromatics while displaying long-term cycling stability, which is attributed to the availability of multiple electron transfer pathways. Overall, this work opens the study on the assembly of PBA-supported heterogeneous nanocatalysts and potentially paves the way toward future applications.

Exploring the composition, phase separation and structure of AgFe alloys for magneto-optical applications

Bimetallic alloys with large discrepancies in atomic radii and crystal structure typically yield systems that are highly immiscible, even at high temperatures. The Ag x Fe 1−x binary system has limited solid and liquid solubility and thus phase separated Ag + Fe alloys should result. Furthermore, Ag has interesting plasmonic properties and Fe is a strong ferromagnet, thus magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles/films should result due to their phase separation. We have leveraged a combinatorial sputter deposition to synthesize thin films with a large Ag x Fe 1−x (0.19 < x < 0.84) phase space to correlate the composition and structure to the optical and magnetic properties for both as-deposited and annealed compositions.

Development of a versatile, high-temperature, high-throughput ion irradiation system

We report ion irradiation has long been used as a surrogate for neutron irradiation experiments which are comparatively slower, more expensive, and often can leave materials activated and difficult to handle post-irradiation. However, with the growing use of combinatorial synthesis methods and high-throughput, automated characterization techniques, ion irradiation facilities will need to upgrade their capabilities to be able to accommodate these new material platforms. To address this challenge, a high-throughput ion irradiation system has been developed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Ion Beam Laboratory (IBL). The system is capable of accommodating large sample arrays of arbitrary geometries and heat samples individually using an infrared laser to enable high-temperature, high-throughput ion irradiation while mitigating the risk of annealing the irradiation damage in nearby samples. To control stage motion, laser power, and beam current measurement, among other tasks, the program Chronos was developed which enables automated high-throughput irradiation experiments.

Explainability and human intervention in autonomous scanning probe microscopy

The broad adoption of machine learning (ML)-based autonomous experiments (AEs) in material characterization and synthesis requires strategies development for understanding and intervention in the experimental workflow. Here, we introduce and realize a post-experimental analysis strategy for deep kernel learning-based autonomous scanning probe microscopy. This approach yields real-time and post-experimental indicators for the progression of an active learning process interacting with an experimental system. We further illustrate how this approach can be applied to human-in-the-loop AEs, where human operators make high-level decisions at high latencies setting the policies for AEs, and the ML algorithm performs low-level, fast decisions. The proposed approach is universal and can be extended to other techniques and applications such as combinatorial library analysis.

Modal dynamics of wind turbine wake meandering from lidar observations

Horizontal scans from nacelle-mounted lidars provide time series measurements of wind turbine wakes across diverse atmospheric conditions, enabling analysis of coherent turbulent structures that influence wake meandering through proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). While low-order modes capture the most energetic turbulent structures, our analysis reveals that they do not necessarily dominate wake meandering dynamics. We evaluate more than 16,000 combinatorial reconstructions of the flow field for each inflow case, demonstrating that mode relevance depends on mode symmetry, turbulent kinetic energy content, and inflow characteristics. Cases with low turbulence intensity and large integral timescales show stronger correlations between POD modes and wake meandering, whereas higher turbulence conditions (turbulence intensity > 7%) are less effectively described by reduced-order models. However, the qualitative similarity of POD modes across varied atmospheric conditions suggests the potential existence of a semi-universal basis for representing wind turbine wakes, with implications for improving engineering wake models.

Therapeutic targeting of membrane-associated proteins in central nervous system tumors

The activity of the most complex system, the central nervous system (CNS) is profoundly regulated by a huge number of membrane-associated proteins (MAP). A minor change stimulates immense chemical changes and the elicited response is organized by MAP, which acts as a receptor of that chemical or channel enabling the flow of ions. Slight changes in the activity or expression of these MAPs lead to severe consequences such as cognitive disorders, memory loss, or cancer. CNS tumors are heterogeneous in nature and hard-to-treat due to random mutations in MAPs; like as overexpression of EGFRvIII/TGFβR/VEGFR, change in adhesion molecules α5β3 integrin/SEMA3A, imbalance in ion channel proteins, etc. Extensive research is under process for developing new therapeutic approaches using these proteins such as targeted cytotoxic radiotherapy, drug-delivery, and prodrug activation, blocking of receptors like GluA1, developing viral vector against cell surface receptor. The combinatorial approach of these strategies along with the conventional one might be more potential. Henceforth, our review focuses on in-depth analysis regarding MAPs aiming for a better understanding for developing an efficient therapeutic approach for targeting CNS tumors.

Metastability of stratified magnetohydrostatic equilibria and their relaxation

Motivated by explosive releases of energy in fusion, space and astrophysical plasmas, we consider the nonlinear stability of stratified magnetohydrodynamic equilibria against two-dimensional interchanges of straight magnetic-flux tubes. We demonstrate that, even within this restricted class of dynamics, the linear stability of an equilibrium does not guarantee its nonlinear stability: equilibria can be metastable. We show that the minimum-energy state accessible to a metastable equilibrium under non-diffusive two-dimensional dynamics can be found by solving a combinatorial optimisation problem. These minimum-energy states are, to good approximation, the final states reached by our simulations of destabilised metastable equilibria for which turbulent mixing is suppressed by viscosity. To predict the result of fully turbulent relaxation, we construct a statistical mechanical theory based on the maximisation of Boltzmann's mixing entropy. This theory is analogous to the Lynden-Bell statistical mechanics of collisionless stellar systems and plasma, and to the Robert–Sommeria–Miller theory of two-dimensional vortex turbulence. Our theory reproduces well the results of our numerical simulations for sufficiently large perturbations to the metastable equilibrium.

Optimal experimental design: Formulations and computations

Questions of ‘how best to acquire data’ are essential to modelling and prediction in the natural and social sciences, engineering applications, and beyond. Optimal experimental design (OED) formalizes these questions and creates computational methods to answer them. This article presents a systematic survey of modern OED, from its foundations in classical design theory to current research involving OED for complex models. We begin by reviewing criteria used to formulate an OED problem and thus to encode the goal of performing an experiment. We emphasize the flexibility of the Bayesian and decision-theoretic approach, which encompasses information-based criteria that are well-suited to nonlinear and non-Gaussian statistical models. We then discuss methods for estimating or bounding the values of these design criteria; this endeavour can be quite challenging due to strong nonlinearities, high parameter dimension, large per-sample costs, or settings where the model is implicit. A complementary set of computational issues involves optimization methods used to find a design; we discuss such methods in the discrete (combinatorial) setting of observation selection and in settings where an exact design can be continuously parametrized. Finally we present emerging methods for sequential OED that build non-myopic design policies, rather than explicit designs; these methods naturally adapt to the outcomes of past experiments in proposing new experiments, while seeking coordination among all experiments to be performed. Throughout, we highlight important open questions and challenges.

The Role of Cation Coordination in the Electrical and Optical Properties of Amorphous Transparent Conducting Oxides

Amorphous oxide semiconductor materials have demonstrated numerous advantages without compromise of electrical properties as compared to their crystalline counterparts, yet understanding of the fundamental principles allowing this has remained elusive. To study the origins of enhanced optoelectronic properties, we apply high-throughput, combinatorial sputtering, structural and spectral mapping, and computationally intensive ab initio molecular dynamics simulations with density functional theory to a ternary, post-transition metal oxide system, namely, zinc tin oxide. The deposited thin films exhibit a high figure of merit, achieving carrier densities in the range of 1019 to 1020 cm–3 and carrier mobilities up to 35 cm2/Vs. These results highlight the role of local distortions and cation coordination in determining the microscopic origins of carrier generation and transport. In particular, we identify the strong likelihood of Sn undercoordination in both Zn-poor and Zn-rich phases leading to the high carrier concentrations observed. This not only diverges from the still widespread historical indictment of oxygen vacancies controlling carrier population in crystalline oxides but also provides a comprehensive framework to describe the unique structure–property relationships using specific structural and electronic descriptors in disordered phase materials.

Rapid Identification of Synthetic Routes to Functional Metastable Phases Using X-ray Probed Laser Anneal Mapping (XPLAM) Time-Temperature Quench Maps

Many material systems have known or predicted functional phases that are metastable at standard temperature and pressure. While substantial advances have been made in the high-throughput and combinatorial synthesis of materials with a range of stoichiometries, investigation of thermal processing remains largely the domain of iterative uniform anneals or static gradients. Here we develop X-ray probed laser anneal mapping (XPLAM), a high throughput technique coupling spatially resolved X-ray diffraction with microsecond to millisecond laser gradient anneals to produce temperature–dwell–transformation (TDT) diagrams of the phase as a function of quench time and temperature. In addition to showing regimes where specific metastable phases form preferentially, TDT diagrams provide insight into the submillisecond kinetics of solid–solid phase transitions. This is a unique tool for mapping reaction pathways for metastable phases. As a first demonstration of XPLAM, we study Bi2O3, which has a rich set of polytypes, including the d-phase with an exceptionally high oxygen ion conductivity. We demonstrate the first annealing-driven synthesis of room temperature d-Bi2O3. We expect XPLAM to prove a powerful technique for rapid identification of synthetic routes to metastable phases and to generate the exhaustive data sets required for machine learning-guided exploration of materials processing.

Evaluation of Nanostructured β-Mn 2 V 2 O 7 Thin Films as Photoanodes for Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation

β-Mn 2 V 2 O 7 (β-MVO) was recently reported to be a promising candidate for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, with a suitable band gap and band edge positions and reasonable stability and photoactivity in preliminary tests in alkaline solution. Here, we present an in-depth evaluation of the PEC performance and stability of phase-pure nanostructured β-Mn 2 V 2 O 7 films made by calcination of a spin-cast molecular ink. We show that β-Mn 2 V 2 O 7 dissolves in pure water, corrodes in aqueous electrolytes at pH 7 and 9, and converts to amorphous manganese (hydr)oxides within minutes at pH 13. Our β-Mn 2 V 2 O 7 films yielded only miniscule photocurrents (~uA cm -2 ) for the oxidation of iodide, sulfite, or water and the reduction of iodate or water in borate- and phosphate-buffered electrolytes at pH 7 and 9, the oxidation of [Fe(CN) 6 ] 4- or water at pH 13, and the oxidation of bromide in acetonitrile, regardless of film calcination temperature and time, film thickness, and illumination geometry. Minimal photoactivity was observed even in electrolytes in which film degradation was insignificant over the duration of the PEC tests. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy shows that the poor photoactivity is likely the result of fast hole trapping and recombination at the MVO surface that leaves few free charge carriers beyond the picosecond time scale. Given its poor charge transport/extraction and chemical stability, native nanostructured β-Mn 2 V 2 O 7 is ineffective for solar water splitting and future research on this material should focus on the development of superior syntheses and film morphologies, MVO alloys, heterostructures, and surface coatings to alleviate recombination and boost operational stability. This work underscores the importance of careful follow-up studies of materials identified as "hits" in combinatorial materials discovery campaigns.

Short-Range Order Tunes Optical Properties in Long-Range Disordered ZnSnN2-ZnO Alloy

Local site ordering offers a new paradigm for property control in functional materials. However, systems that exhibit a propensity for local order and global disorder are often challenging to characterize, and demonstrations of ordering-induced property tuning are few and far between. Here, we demonstrate that short-range ordering tunes the optical absorption edge in the long-range disordered alloy system (ZnSnN2)1-x(ZnO)2x at x = 0.25. We use combinatorial cosputtering to synthesize a set of thin-film samples spanning this alloy space. X-ray diffraction demonstrates lattice contraction as a function of alloy composition, confirming that a mixed-anion and -cation alloy has been synthesized. Using N and O K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure in conjunction with simulations of cation-disordered supercell structures, we find that samples exhibit octet-rule-breaking motifs around both anions. Upon annealing at an alloy composition of x = 0.25, X-ray absorption analysis suggests that local motif structure shifts toward octet-rule-conserving while long-range disorder is maintained. Spectroscopic ellipsometry reveals that local ordering increases the absorption edge energy at constant composition. Additionally, alloy-induced optical absorption edge tuning is demonstrated. This work paves the way toward property tuning with short-range ordering in (ZnSnN2)1-x(ZnO)2x and beyond.

Thin-Film Stabilization and Magnetism of η -Carbide-Type Iron Nitrides

Transition-metal nitrides in ..eta..-carbide-type structures exhibit unusual bonding motifs and proximity to magnetic instabilities. Yet they remain unexplored in thin-film form due to the difficulty of stabilizing nitrogen-poor ternaries among competing phases. Here, we report the thin-film synthesis and phase-stability mapping of the ..eta..-nitride systems Fe-W-N and Fe-Mo-N. Amorphous Fe-M-N (M = W, Mo) combinatorial libraries deposited by reactive cosputtering crystallize upon rapid thermal annealing, enabling systematic identification of synthesis windows as a function of composition and annealing temperature. Using laboratory powder X-ray diffraction and synchrotron grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, we establish that Fe 3 Mo 3 N-based ..eta..-carbide phases form over a substantially broader compositional and thermal range than W-based compositions, where ..eta.. structures are stabilized only when the films are Fe-rich. These trends are rationalized using mixed chemical-potential vs composition phase diagrams that capture the narrow nitrogen chemical-potential stability of ..eta..-nitrides. Magnetic measurements reveal that ferromagnetism is induced in Fe-rich Fe 3.54 Mo 2.46 N with a small exchange-bias-like response that is absent in Fe 3 W 3 N-based compositions, highlighting the sensitivity of magnetic behavior to modest deviations from stoichiometry. This work establishes practical thin-film synthesis routes for ..eta..-nitride materials and demonstrates how composition can be tuned to access emergent magnetic phenomena in these complex nitrides.

Optimization-Based Azeotropic Distillation System Synthesis Using Geometric Insights

The synthesis of azeotropic distillation systems is challenging due to the existence of compartments in the residue curve map coupled with the combinatorial aspects from numerous possible system configurations. In this work, an optimization-based approach is introduced to synthesize homogeneous azeotropic distillation systems. The approach employs a network-based representation generated via a matrix method. To design the distillation columns, the modified Underwood equations are adopted, in which pseudocomponent-based compositions are used. For cases where separatrices are significantly curved, corrections via piece-wise linear functions and collinearity properties are implemented. Two examples are presented to illustrate the proposed approach.
