Global gyrokinetic study of shaping effects on electromagnetic modes at NSTX aspect ratio with ad hoc parallel magnetic perturbation effects

Plasma shaping may have a stronger effect on global turbulence in tight-aspect-ratio tokamaks than in conventional-aspect-ratio tokamaks due to the higher toroidicity and more acute poloidal asymmetry in the magnetic field. In addition, previous local gyrokinetic studies have shown that it is necessary to include parallel magnetic field perturbations in order to accurately compute growth rates of electromagnetic modes in tight-aspect-ratio tokamaks. In this work, the effects of elongation and triangularity on global, ion-scale, linear electromagnetic modes are studied at National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) aspect ratio and high plasma β using the global gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code XGC. The effects of compressional magnetic perturbations are approximated via a well-known modification to the particle drifts that was developed for flux-tube simulations [Joiner et al., Phys. Plasmas 17, 072104 (2010)], without proof of its validity in a global simulation, with the gyrokinetic codes GENE and GEM being used for local verification and global cross-verification. Magnetic equilibria are re-constructed for each distinct plasma profile that is used. Coulomb collision effects are not considered. Within the limitations imposed by the present study, it is found that linear growth rates of electromagnetic modes (collisionless microtearing modes and kinetic ballooning modes) are significantly reduced in a high-elongation and high-triangularity NSTX-like geometry compared to a circular NSTX-like geometry. For example, growth rates of kinetic ballooning modes at high- β are reduced to the level of that of collisionless trapped electron modes.

Code Coverage Status of the ARC Code RCT

The Argonne Reactor Code (ARC) software system supports users in their fast reactor design goals by providing neutronic, thermal-hydraulic, and structural analysis capabilities. REBUS plays a pivotal role in the ARC system as the primary fuel cycle analysis capability for fast reactor problems. Over its 60 year history, ARC software usage with REBUS has been applied to numerous fast and thermal spectrum reactor analysis projects with good to excellent comparison against experiments. The RCT code is a later addition and uses the REBUS restart files to define its input. The RCT code was built to provide pin depletion details on EBR-II models and thus many features of RCT were specifically tailored to the needs of EBR-II models. Additional approximations were invoked which are likely only valid for the EBR-II reactor and the particular fuel management that was done for it. The purpose of the present work is to identify a set of test problems for RCT and assess the code coverage for those test problems. The goal is to document what parts of the existing RCT code are touched by the set of test problems and which are not. Because no detailed verification work has been done on RCT, the existing regression testing suite was chosen for the code coverage assessment. The code coverage analysis of RCT was performed with the Code Coverage Tool of the Intel Fortran compiler which requires modifications to the compilation of RCT. The detailed coverage tables are given for each part of RCT. As will be discussed and shown, some parts of the RCT capability that are known to be used by the EBR-II analysis work are not tested by the regression testing suite. These aspects should be resolved before major source code changes are taken for the RCT software. Because REBUS and DIF3D are not subroutines of RCT, the coverage changes in both of those codes is not altered by RCT. The same is true for all of the modules of DIF3D that are used by RCT such as SYSLIB and SEGLIB.

High-fidelity multiphysics load following and accidental transient modeling of microreactors using NEAMS tools: Application of NEAMS codes to perform multiphysics modeling analyses of micro-reactor concepts

The feasibility of modeling microreactors using high-fidelity models with the Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) tools is investigated in this report. Three overarching questions guided this research: can NEAMS tools readily be applied for high-fidelity multiphysics modeling of different types of transients in microreactor designs; how accurate are the results obtained; and are improvements needed in accuracy or user experience of NEAMS tools, especially considering newly developed capabilities? This work builds upon FY-2022 work, and two microreactor concepts considering heat pipe (HP-MR) and gas-cooled (GC-MR) technologies were further analyzed using high-fidelity multiphysics simulations. The NEAMS tools considered and coupled within the MultiApp environment are Griffin for neutronics, BISON for thermo-mechanics, Sockeye for heat pipe modeling (in HP-MR), SAM for 1D Fluid – 3D solid modeling of coolant channels and system modeling of balance of plant components (in GC-MR), and the SWIFT code for hydrogen redistribution in hydride moderator. The Heat Pipe MicroReactor (HP-MR) concept was further analyzed in FY-2023 to demonstrate the stochastic TRISO failure modeling capability in BISON to check operational limits of the TRISO fuel. A new full-core Gas-Cooled MicroReactor (GC-MR) model was developed based on the initial assembly-model used in Y-2022 and used for steady-state and accidental depressurization transient simulations. Accuracy of the simulations performed was assessed through 1) verification analyses completed on the different physics with code-to-code comparison, and 2) validation of the multiphysics simulations based on modeling of the Kilopower Reactor Using Stirling Technology (KRUSTY) experiment. In FY-2023, the mesh and model of KRUSTY was updated to closely match publicly available data, and the neutronic model was verified and validated against experimental control rod worth measurements. The multiphysics model of KRUSTY was developed and used for steady-state analysis and for modeling reactivity insertion transient. The calculated power increase and stabilization agrees well with experimental data following adjustment in fuel thermal expansion coefficient. As an important component of this project, the ANL team gathered experience with a wide range of NEAMS tools: the MOOSE Mesh System, Griffin, BISON, SWIFT, Sockeye, SAM, Workbench, and the MOOSE MultiApp System, and provided assessment of new capabilities. Noteworthy are the user assessment of the “vapor-only” flow model in Sockeye and development of a multiphysics startup transient in HP-MR unit cell for use as tutorial in Sockeye. The full-core GC-MR model was used for assessment of SAM for balance of plant modeling and for demonstrating the SWIFT code capability for hydrogen redistribution modeling in multiphysics transient analyses. In this process, several bugs/issues were identified and reported to developers. Finally, the assembly GC-MR model developed in FY-2022 coupling Griffin, BISON and SAM through flow blockage and rod ejection transients was published to the National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) Virtual Test Bed (VTB). The Heat Pipe MicroReactor (HP-MR) concept high-fidelity multiphysics coupling of Griffin/BISON/Sockeye in load-following and heat pipe failure transients was also published on the VTB. Those submissions are enabling thorough review of these models as well as wide distribution to industry, regulator, and university users. In this analysis, several new research questions were uncovered, and follow-up analyses are recommended to further improve some models, consider additional transients, and continue development of VTB models.

Lattice physics calculations using the embedded self-shielding method in polaris, Part II: Benchmark assessment

Polaris is a 2D multigroup lattice physics capability in the SCALE code system used for the analysis of light water reactor fuel designs. In this work, verification and validation results of Polaris in SCALE 6.2 are presented. The SCALE/KENO continuous-energy Monte Carlo code is used as a reference to compare the results of more than 2,000 combinations of pressurized water reactor and boiling water reactor lattice designs and state points. Radiochemical assay measurements were also used to assess the accuracy of depletion calculations. Results show that Polaris, with ENDF/B-VII.1 cross section library, produces accurate lattice physics data for core simulators.

Verification and Validation Tests of the Gamma Library of the ARC Software Package (Rev.1)

As part of the verification and validation (V&V) efforts of the Argonne Reactor Code (ARC) software system to support the Versatile Test Reactor (VTR) project of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), work has been performed to verify and validate the gamma (or photon) library of the multigroup cross section generation code MC 2 -3 of the ARC system, which is the essential part of the coupled neutron and gamma heating calculations to determine the heat generation rate or power distribution in the core. This V&V study was carried out in three steps: 1) review of the procedures and utility programs for generating the MC 2 -3 gamma library, 2) verification tests of cross sections and KERMA factors by comparing the total heat generation rate of coupled neutron and gamma calculation with that obtained with reaction Q values under the assumption of local gamma energy deposition and by comparing the prompt heat generation rate with that calculated with the MCNP6.2 code, and 3) validation tests of cross sections and KERMA factors by analyzing the ZPPR-15D gamma dose data measured with thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD).

Code Coverage Status of the ARC Code DASSH-F

The Argonne Reactor Code (ARC) software system supports users in their fast reactor design goals by providing neutronic, thermal-hydraulic, and structural analysis capabilities. DASSH-F serves as a steady state thermal hydraulic capability within the ARC system and replaces the SE2-ANL software that preceded it. This document identifies the set of test problems used to assess the code coverage for DASSH-F. The goal is to document what parts of the existing DASSH-F code are touched by the set of test problems and which are not. Because the verification work remains to be done on DASSH-F, one can assume that most of these issues will be resolved as part of that work. The code coverage analysis of DASSH-F was performed with the Code Coverage Tool of the Intel Fortran compiler which requires modifications to the compilation of DASSH-F. The code coverage tables are given for each submodule of DASSH-F. Because DASSH-F links to modules in DIF3D, some details on coverage changes to the DIF3D linked files is provided. As will be seen, most of the uncovered parts/files can be ignored because they are either for error message and debugging output or obviously not needed by DASSH-F today. Seven features of the DASSH-F code were identified to not be covered by the existing testing suite and thus additional verification test problems are suggested to fully cover these sections.

Flow instabilities in helical-coil steam generators for small modular reactors: A review

Here, this study covers the research and discoveries in two-phase flow-boiling instabilities available in the literature—specifically for a helical-coil steam generator (HCSG), including experimental findings, theoretical research, computational models, and system code analyses—supporting research and development of representative small modular reactors (SMRs). Like other new and advanced reactor systems, water-cooled SMRs require experimental data from both integral and separate thermal-hydraulics test facilities for the verification and validation (V&V) of the computational models and computer codes in order to design and obtain regulatory approval. The complex dynamics of two-phase flow-boiling instabilities includes flow regimes physics phenomena, flow-channel geometries, heat-transfer behavior, and interactions among the solid–liquid-gas within the system boundary, all of which are pivotal for understanding the design and operational challenges of SMRs. This study focuses on identifying the relevant knowledge gaps on boiling instabilities—specifically for a HCSG—and provides insights about future research direction optimizing the transport of thermal energy, mass-flow rates, and boundary conditions that ensure the adequate heat-transfer performance, operational stability, and safety associated with SMR systems.
