The polarizabilities of neon

The static dipole polarizability, second hyperpolarizability, quadrupole polarizability and dipole-dipole-quadrupole hyperpolarizability for the Ne atom are computed, using large Gaussian basis sets and coupled cluster wavefunctions. Correlation effects are substantial, ranging from 15 percent for the dipole polarizability to 40 percent for the second hyperpolarizability. It is confirmed by explicit calculation earlier hypotheses that g-type and higher angular momentum functions and core correlation effects make almost no contribution to these properties in Ne. Triple excitations, on the other hand, are very important, accounting for as much as 25 percent of the correlation contribution to the second hyperpolarizability. The best estimate of the second hyperpolarizability is 119 + or - 4 au, in good agreement with the recent calculations of Maroulis and Thakkar (1989) and the latest experimental result of Shelton (1989).

Theoretical study of the A 3Sigma(-)-X 3Pi transition in SiC

A theoretical study of the A 3Sigma(-)-X 3Pi infrared transition in SiC is presented using atomic natural orbital Gaussian basis sets in conjuction with multireference configuration interaction calculations. Dipole moment functions have been computed for both states as well as the A-X electronic transition moment function. The calculations predict that T(00) is 3700 + or - 200/cm, so that the transition recently observed in emission near 4500/cm and assigned to the 0-0 band of the A 3Sigma(-)-X 3Pi system of SiC is actually the 1-0 band.

The vibrational frequencies of ozone

The singles and doubles coupled-cluster (CCSD) method is used, together with the recently proposed CCSD(T) and CCSDT-1 methods, to determine the equilibrium structure and harmonic frequencies of ozone at various levels, on the basis of large one-particle basis sets. It is demonstrated that f-type functions are required in order to obtain quantitative accuracy for the equilibrium structure and harmonic frequencies. The CCSD(T) level of theory, in conjunction with a (4s 3p 2d 1f) atomic natural orbital set, yields an equilibrium geometry and harmonic frequencies that are in excellent agreement with experimental results; an effort has accordingly been made to determine the cubic and quartic force constants, and evaluate the anharmonic corrections to the fundamental vibrational frequencies.

On the dissociation energy of BH

The dissociation energy D(0) of the X 1Sigma(+) state has been determined to be 81.5 + or - 0.5 kcal/mol. This value includes an estimate for basis set incompleteness and for core-core and core-valence correlation. The barrier in the A 1Pi state potential is estimated to be 1.9 + or - 0.2 kcal/mol. By analyzing the tunneling through the barrier, it is demonstrated that D(0) and the predissociation limit differ by about 0.8-0.9 kcal/mol. Thus the experimental predissociation limit of 82.5 + or - 0.4 kcal/mol is consistent with the values computed for D(0) and the barrier in this work.

Theoretical study of polarizabilities and hyperpolarizabilities of Ne, HF, F(-), and OH(-)

Theoretical calculations are presented for the polarizability parameters through the fourth power of an applied static electric field for Ne and HF and through the second power in the field for the negative ions F(-) and OH(-). Large Gaussian basis sets are employed and electron correlation is incorporated using the modified coupled pair functional (MCPF) method and for Ne and HF using coupled-cluster single- and double-excitation (CCSD) methods with two approaches of including the effect of triple excitations. The MCPF method is found to perform well in relation to the more rigorous CCSD method.

All-electron molecular Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations: The group 4 tetrahydrides CH4, SiH4, GeH4, SnH4 and PbH4

A basis-set-expansion Dirac-Hartree-Fock program for molecules is described. Bond lengths and harmonic frequencies are presented for the ground states of the group 4 tetrahydrides, CH4, SiH4, GeH4, SnH4, and PbH4. The results are compared with relativistic effective core potential (RECP) calculations, first-order perturbation theory (PT) calculations and with experimental data. The bond lengths are well predicted by first-order perturbation theory for all molecules, but non of the RECP's considered provides a consistent prediction. Perturbation theory overestimates the relativistic correction to the harmonic frequencies; the RECP calculations underestimate the correction.

Time-dependent treatment of scattering. II - Novel integral equation approach to quantum wave packets

The novel wave-packet propagation scheme presented is based on the time-dependent form of the Lippman-Schwinger integral equation and does not require extensive matrix inversions, thereby facilitating application to systems in which some degrees of freedom express the potential in a basis expansion. The matrix to be inverted is a function of the kinetic energy operator, and is accordingly diagonal in a Bessel function basis set. Transition amplitudes for various orbital angular momentum quantum numbers are obtainable via either Fourier transform of the amplitude density from the time to the energy domain, or the direct analysis of the scattered wave packet.

Vibrations in small Mg clusters

The equilibrium geometries, binding energies, and harmonic frequencies of Mg3 and Mg4 have been determined using large atomic natural orbital basis sets in conjunction with high levels of electron correlation. The correlation treatments comprise multireference configuration interaction (MRCI), singles and doubles coupled-cluster (CCSD) theory and the CCSD(T) extension that includes a perturbational estimate of connected triple excitations. As with previous studies of small Be clusters, the CCSD(T) method is found to reproduce the MRCI results with a remarkable degree of accuracy and at a fraction of the computational cost. Using the CCSD(T) method, full quartic force fields for Mg3 and Mg4 have been determined and anharmonic analyses have been performed using second-order perturbation theory. Vibration-rotation interaction constants and centrifugal distortion constants have also been determined.

Theoretical characterization of the 5Pi and 3Pi potential energy surfaces for NH + O yields N + OH

The reactant, product, and saddle point regions of the 5Pi and 3Pi potential energy surfaces for the reaction NH + O yields N + OH have been characterized using complete active space self consistent field/externally contracted configuration interaction calculations with large atomic natural orbital basis sets. The computed barrier heights are 5.6 and 11.7 kcal/mol on the 5Pi and 3Pi surfaces, respectively. Transition state theory with an Eckart tunneling correction is used to estimate the rate constant on the 5Pi surface.

An ab initio study of Fe(CO)n, n = 1,5, and Cr(CO)6

Ab initio calculations have been performed for Cr(CO)6 and Fe(CO)n, n = 1,5. Basis sets of better than double zeta quality are used, and correlation is included using the modified coupler-pair functional method. The computed geometries and force constants are in reasonable agreement with experiment. The sequential bond dissociation energies of CO from Fe(CO)5 are estimated to be: 39, 31, 25, 22, and greater than 5 kcal/mol. It is noted that the first bond dissociation energy is relative to the singlet ground state of Fe(CO)5 and the lowest singlet state of Fe(CO)4, whereas the second is relative to the ground triplet states of Fe(CO)4 and Fe(CO)3. In addition, the binding energy for Fe-CO would be modified to 18 kcal/mol if dissociation occurred to the Fe(5F) excited state asymptote. The CO binding energies for Fe and Cr are found to be in poorer agreement with experiment than those found in a previous study on Ni(CO)4. The origins of this difference are discussed.

A potential energy surface for the process H2 + H2O yielding H + H + H2O - Ab initio calculations and analytical representation

Extensive ab initio calculations on the ground state potential energy surface of H2 + H2O were performed using a large contracted Gaussian basis set and a high level of correlation treatment. An analytical representation of the potential energy surface was then obtained which reproduces the calculated energies with an overall root-mean-square error of only 0.64 mEh. The analytic representation explicitly includes all nine internal degrees of freedom and is also well behaved as the H2 dissociates; it thus can be used to study collision-induced dissociation or recombination of H2. The strategy used to minimize the number of energy calculations is discussed, as well as other advantages of the present method for determining the analytical representation.

Resonances in muonic systems

Complex-rotation-method calculations, performed with large basis sets and different sets of nonlinear parameters, show the existence of Feshbach-type resonances below the n = 2 threshold of tmu and dmu. The positions of these resonances are found to be in good agreement with the results of Hara and Ishihara (12989). The widths of these resonances are determined.

The photoelectron spectroscopy of ZnCl2

The ionization energies (IEs) corresponding to the Cl ligand electrons and the Zn 3d electrons in ZnCl2, computed using large Gaussian basis sets and a high level of correlation treatment, are presented. The IEs for the Cl ligand electrons are in excellent agreement with those determined from photoelectron spectra. The IEs corresponding to the Zn 3d electrons agree with experiment relatively well in absolute magnitude, but differ in order. The vibrational frequencies of the ground state agree very well with experiment, and predictions are made for the corresponding frequencies in the positive ion.

Theoretical studies of the first- and second-row transition-metal dimethyls and their positive ions

Equilibrium structures for the ground and the selected low-lying excited states of the first- and the second-row transition-metal dimethyls and their positive ions were determined using the basis sets and correlation approach described by Bauschlicher et al. (1989). In particular, the dimethyl insertion products were examined to elucidate the trends in bonding. Results show that the bonding in the dimethyl transition-metal positive ions arises from the sd hybridization, leading, for most dimethyls, to a C-M-C bond angle of less than 134 deg.

Theoretical vibrations of carbon chains C3, C4, C5, C6, C7, C8, and C9

The MBPT (2) procedure with the 6-31g (asterisk) basis set was used to study nearly linear carbon chains. The theoretical vibrational frequencies of the molecules C3 through C9 are presented and, for C3 through C6, compared to experimental stretching frequencies and their (C-13)/(C-12) isotopomers. Predictions for C7, C8, and C9 stretching frequencies are calculated by directly scaling the theoretical frequencies with factors derived from experimental-to-theoretical ratios known for the smaller molecules.

Theoretical study of the C-H bond dissociation energies of CH4, C2H2, C2H4, and H2C2O

The successive C-H bond dissociation energies of CH4, C2H2, C2H4, and H2C2O (ketene) are determined using large-basis sets and a high level of correlation treatment. For CH4, C2H2, and C2H4 the computed values are in excellent agreement with experiment. Using these results, the values 107.9 + or - 2.0 and 96.7 + or - 2.0 kcal/mol are recommended for the C-H bond dissociation energies of H2C2O and HC2O, respectively.

The energy separation between the classical and nonclassical isomers of protonated acetylene - An extensive study in one- and n-particle space saturation

The energy separation between the classical and nonclassical forms of protonated acetylene has been reinvestigated in light of the recent experimentally deduced lower bound to this value of 6.0 kcal/mol. The objective of the present study is to use state-of-the-art ab initio quantum mechanical methods to establish this energy difference to within chemical accuracy (i.e., about 1 kcal/mol). The one-particle basis sets include up to g-type functions and the electron correlation methods include single and double excitation coupled-cluster (CCSD), the CCSD(T) extension, multireference configuration interaction, and the averaged coupled-pair functional methods. A correction for zero-point vibrational energies has also been included, yielding a best estimate for the energy difference between the classical and nonclassical forms of 3.7 + or - 1.3 kcal/mol.
