Development and application of a gradient method for solving differential games

A technique for solving n-dimensional games is developed and applied to two pursuit-evasion games. The first is a two-dimensional game similar to the homicidal chauffeur but modified to resemble an airplane-helicopter engagement. The second is a five-dimensional game of two airplanes at constant altitude and with thrust and turning controls. The performance function to be optimized by the pursuer and evader was the distance between the evader and a given target point in front of the pursuer. The analytic solution to the first game reveals that both unique and nonunique solutions exist. A comparison between the gradient results and the analytic solution shows a dependence on the nominal controls in regions where nonunique solutions exist. In the unique solution region, the results from the two methods agree closely. The results for the five-dimensional two-airplane game are also shown to be dependent on the nominal controls selected and indicate that initial conditions are in a region of nonunique solutions.

Sockeye Heat Pipe Analysis Code Verification and Validation

Some of the most promising microreactor designs currently under development utilize heat pipe technology to transfer heat from the reactor core to the secondary side heat exchanger, due to the technology’s compactness, efficiency, passivity, and reliability. Sockeye is an engineering-scale heat pipe tool developed under the Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation Program to be used for the design and safety analysis of microreactors. Sockeye’s core capability lies in a 1D, two-phase, compressible flow model, used to simulate the working fluid inside the heat pipe. Sockeye is built on the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment framework, which allows for seamless multiphysics coupling with other Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation tools and can thus be used in a full-scale simulation of a microreactor assembly, which can include hundreds of heat pipes. This paper presents some initial verification and validation assessments performed for Sockeye. We demonstrate good agreement between Sockeye’s numerical results and steady-state analytic solutions for velocity and pressure drop, with differences attributable to the underlying assumptions made by the analytic solutions. We also show that Sockeye reproduces analytic predictions of key operational limits, such as the capillary limit and the sonic limit. Finally, we compare Sockeye results to experimental data for the SAFE-30 heat pipe module test.

Nonadiabatic and three-dimensional effects in compressible turbulent boundary layers

A defect stream function formulation for nonadiabatic flow with small crossflow is developed. The first-integral property of this formulation provides for two removal of the streamline curvature term in the governing equation so that the form of the reduced equation for small crossflow is the same as that for two dimensional flow. The combined law of the wall and wake is used in place of the no-slip boundary condition. The tangential velocity equation for law-of-the-wall flow is shown to be the same for three-dimensions as for two when the Boussinesq approximation applies, and a closed form solution for the crossflow angle in the inner region is obtained. Analytic solutions for nonadiabatic, compressible, equilibrium flow with a Clauser outer-region eddy-viscosity model are obtained, and excellent agreement with experimental skin friction and velocity profile data for nonadiabatic, compressible flat-plate flow is achieved. An analytic solution for a linear inner-region eddy-viscosity model is also obtained; the wake function part of this solution is found to be inconsistent with the empirically established law of the wake.
